Editorial

Better Than Bose Recently, I was watching a television commercial for the tabletop Bose Wave Music System on one of the shopping networks. I have long admired the sound of this music system but have never purchased one. Yet, I know that this is one of the best, if not THE best, sound that one can get in a home audio system. This small box really does fill the room with quality sound and makes you feel that you are in the presence of the performers. It may appear to have a small beginning, but the end result is amazing!

Nevertheless, there is something else that has a small beginning that is even more Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., desirable and lasting.

Editor The Savior Jesus came into this world as a baby. In fact, he began as an embryo in the womb of his mother, Mary. Yet, this "holy baby" Jesus grew into the "God-man" Jesus, the savior of all humankind. While this might seem marvelous in our eyes, it was not a hard thing for God, for whom nothing is impossible. God specializes in doing and making great things with small beginnings. With small raindrops the entire earth is watered and fed ... and sometimes floods. Israel began as an idea and the seed of one human being, and went on to become a great nation. And yes, the sins which we commit so carelessly, and consider as nothing, are multiplied unto us and become weights and boulders.

But the good news of Christmas is not only that God makes great things out of small beginnings. It is also that God is able to make small things out of what we often consider great. Water dries up, nations cease to exist, and through the advent of the baby Jesus, sins are removed by the completed sacrifice of the grown-up, God-man Jesus on the cross of Calvary. Further, in his resurrection we have the opportunity and potential for life evermore.

I am thankful for the heavenly gift of music, and I appreciate the way Bose makes recorded and broadcast music come to life, but admittedly, Bose is only good for this lifetime. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Son, and with him I can go to heaven where I can surely hear music and singing like I've never heard it before. The music of rejoicing will never end, and the heavenly Trinity, the means of this production, will never go out of style.

God is able to magnify our lives to God's glory, and we are called in the smallness of our beings to make the name of Jesus great. "O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together." (Psalm 34:3, KJV) It is nice to have a Bose Wave, but 'tis far better to have Jesus who is able to make our sins to be nothing and to raise us up in the greatness of his glory. I may not have a Bose, but I'll take Jesus over Bose anyday.

“Celebrate, Cultivate, and Eliminate!”

Indeed, 2022 has been a year of change and a year of challenge. The Church experienced the death of Bishop Godwin T. Umoette, held the General Conference in Cincinnati, retired two bishops and three general officers, and elected five new bishops along with four new general officers. What a change. We saw greater division in politics, horrific mass shootings, hate crimes rise, and natural disasters. What a challenge.

And even for those who feel well-grounded and in a wonderful place, it is hard not to feel that our reservoirs of emotions have been depleted by the onslaught of the change and challenges this year has brought.

Well, 2023 is almost here, and we need to prepare ourselves for the power and energy that a new year brings. I believe we should take a moment to pause, realign, and review the past year so we can clear the emotional debris from our lives and elevate ourselves for the transition. Our strategic plan says the Church must be BOLD, and that boldness starts with us.

I see three things we should do NOW to end the year strong, focused, and sure!

Celebrate. When you allow yourself to celebrate success, you realize just how far you have come and invite more success into your life. What small (and big) wins from the year will you celebrate?

Cultivate. Looking back at the year, we can find things we regret, mistakes we have made, and memories that disappoint us. The most painful experience can turn into an opportunity when you look for the spiritual lesson. What spiritual lessons have you learned from the challenges, pain, and struggles from this year that will help you grow next year?

Eliminate. Trees teach us much about elimination and rejuvenation. Trees have no problem letting the dead leaves drop off. What sometimes looks like mortal wounds to a tree, is the process of renewal. They let go of the old leaves to make room for the new to grow. What disappointment are you willing to let go of before the new year?

On behalf of Personnel Services, I wish each of you a joyful Christmas season full of laughter and new memories with those you love! Let us all celebrate, cultivate, and eliminate some things as the new year arrives. Best wishes for Christmas!

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New

Leader’s Lead “The Church isn’t going anywhere if the pastor is not willing to lead. We, as pastors, were not ordained to follow but rather to lead a congregation. We were not ordained and sent so that we could follow that congregation wherever it wants to go”. Leaders, lead. It is important to note that education and training are critical to the growth of the CME church. Therefore, the pastor must hear from the Lord in prayer and respond accordingly to lead God’s people.

The larger community must be in partnership with the church and vice versa. The church can no longer work as a connectional church from an autonomist mindset. The pastor must create a space for authentic conservation to take place. Many times, those who are not a part of a congregation but live in the community might see those who drive into their neighborhood as visitors who do not invest in the neighborhood. The community wants to see those who worship in the church live, shop, and become a part of the community, not drive-by visitors. However, those in the congregation may not be aware of those in the community and become locked within the walls of their own churches and attract no one. The non-churched see who we are, and the non-churched hear what we say. If the Church is to grow, the Church must not focus on the days of nostalgia but be about introducing and reintroducing Christ. This must be the goal of every believer to reach nonbelievers who live and work in the community. The congregation must see the need for holistic stewardship in the area where our churches are present.

It must become a team effort as the strategic plan gives us direction. We can truly become the example of effective evangelism in the Christian Methodist Episcopal. Bishop Othal Hawthorn Lakey, the forty-fourth Bishop, reminds us of what leaders can do when he says, “The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has not seen significant church growth since its inception. In spite of the difficulties, in the first twenty years as a separate and independent church, the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church tripled its membership, selected three additional bishops, who proved to be men of outstanding competence and commitment, expanding the scope of the annual conference operations, establishing two viable educational enterprises, and became a predominately Black church in the South.” God has given us as leaders more than enough to do the work rather than sit comfortably and represent the status quo.

By following the vision of God, the CME Church has expanded its ministries with domestic and international work. Nevertheless, we are not through. The God of 1870 is the same in 2022 and beyond. Leaders must meet today’s times with renewed, innovative, and relevant ministry. Leaders must be prepared for 21st-century leadership in an ever-changing world.

Change Driven by A Pandemic Carmichael Crutchfield The theme of the October 2022 Christian Unity Gathering (CUG) of the National Council of Churches was “Change: Serving A Never Changing Christ in An Ever-Changing World” and it resounds loud and clear in the world of the CME Department of Christian Education and Formation. Over the last several weeks I have participated in several events that speak to change. Two notable events are the Christian Unity Gathering (CUG) and the Religious Education Association’s (REA) annual meeting.

Both events were held virtually.

With CUG I participated on a panel discussing “The Future of Christian Education.” I spoke to the many changes that have taken place during my twenty-year tenure as General Secretary and how these things are indicative of the necessity for future change.

At the REA meeting I was grouped with several religious educators in a session called Giving Witness. The idea was to address two questions. How did your faith community react to Covid in terms of Religious Education with Children and youth? What are your observations? I spoke about the efforts of the CME Church to attempt to leverage technology to address the needs of children and youth. An example of this is the production of a technology-driven Connectional Youth and Young Adult Week for 2023 resource.

Furthermore, the Department of Christian Education and Formation has been meeting weekly in a virtual format to plan a Christian Education Conference that will feature the involvement of technology. This will allow on February 18, 2023, the delivery of the conference from Memphis to reach all Episcopal Districts using the Internet.

Also, the Department has launched the pilot program of the Discipleship initiative of the Strategic plan using Zoom technology in addition to involvement in three grant opportunities. In the midst has come a major change in the way we provide adult church school literature.

Beginning this quarter (December-January-February), we are receiving manuscripts for the adult student books written almost exclusively by our African Methodist Episcopal sisters and brothers.

I have made some changes to the original manuscripts, but due to time constraints changes are limited. The writers, however, understand and are committed to the same Biblical lesson outlines we are as CME’s. We are all using lessons based on the curriculum provided by the Committee on Uniform Series of the National Council of Churches. We all participate in the preparation of the lesson outlines. It is worthy to note that we are all Methodists and African Americans.

You will find the format very user friendly, but different from what you have become accustomed to using. One new nuance each lesson provides is a Sankofa topic. I suggest that you research this word to understand its full meaning. I believe it will enhance your time in church school. One resource is found at https://www.berea.edu/cgwc/the-power-of-sankofa/.

This is not the final change we will be making to the adult lessons. After the first production from Publication Services, we are noticing some changes that will be made in the Spring Quarter’s material. The Department is seeking to continue to work to provide very engaging adult church school material. We will soon set our minds toward youth and children material; however, we are presently producing a technology-driven offering of children and youth church school lessons. Look for more to come over this entire quadrennium.

Announcing the CME Church Technology Survey Calling Clergy and Laity of All Ages (Youth, Young Adults and Adults) to Participate!

Dear Members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Greetings!

The Department of Communication and Information Technology (CIT) has created the CME Church Technology Survey to evaluate technology resources used and needed within our connectional church, with a two-fold emphasis for local churches and our members. We need our CME members, clergy and laity of all ages (youth, young adults and adults), to complete the survey by December 3, 2022.

The CME Church Technology Survey will help us to learn from our membership about different perceptions and opinions regarding using technology in our churches and members’ homes, and gather insights on software tools, Internet services, and relevant technical skills. Additionally, the survey can help with understanding the challenges faced by our connectional churches and members, identify the resources that are needed to meet the needs, and further assist us with defining communication and information technology strategies for our connectional church.

Please take the time to fill out the survey by Saturday, December 3, 2022. It will take about 5 minutes to complete it. If you need assistance, call on a relative or friend to help you to fill out the survey. Everybody look left, everybody look right everywhere you look I'm standing in the spotlight!

It's gonna be King Simba's finest fling Oh; I just can't wait to be king!

Now if you are a Disney fan, you probably recognize those words from the Lion King’s “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King.”

A few months ago, many of us found ourselves intrigued while watching the pomp and ceremony of a ten-day-long mourning period for Queen Elizabeth. She reigned over the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from February 1952 until her death in 2022. During that ten-day period, hundreds of pictures of the Royal Family were displayed across television and social media. A picture of a very somber, thoughtful Prince Charles caught my attention.

I wondered if, in all of his 70-plus years, he had ever wished as Simba had—“O, I just can’t wait to be king!” It didn’t matter because now he was king.

We are in the season of Advent or Coming. This season allows us to prepare to receive our King as a newborn babe. But unlike Simba and unlike Prince Charles, Jesus didn’t have to wait to be king because he already was our King and HE IS OUR KING! Now a king or queen needs a kingdom. Simba’s kingdom would be the jungle. Prince Charles’ kingdom would be the United Kingdom. While that may sound impressive, think on what the hymn writers William and Gloria Gaither said in their beloved hymn, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME. They told us, “KINGS AND KINGDOMS WILL ALL PASS AWAY BUT THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME!” The kingdom of our King Jesus was written about many years ago. According to theologians, in the Gospel of Matthew, the kingship of Jesus Christ was anticipated in his genealogy.

Isaiah told us, “6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it …” (Isaiah 9:6-7, KJV) Jesus spoke of His kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount. He also told us He would build His church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Jesus’ kingdom will never pass away. It is infinite in size. It is forever.

In Matthew's account of the Passion Week of Jesus, we see the Kingship of Jesus acknowledged when He made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Ride on King Jesus, All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name, How Great Thou Art, and He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands are just a few of hundreds of songs written in praise to Jesus our KING. In 1741, the composer Georg Friedrich Händel was inspired by verses in the book of Revelation to pen these words in the Hallelujah Chorus.

For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth-Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! …

The kingdom of this world Is become the kingdom of our Lord And of His Christ, and of His Christ, And He shall reign for ever and ever King of kings (Forever and ever Hallelujah! Hallelujah!)

PRAISE THE LORD. Aren’t we glad, there was No Wait for Jesus to be KING? ALL HAIL KING JESUS!!!

LANE COLLEGE NPS PHYSICS MAJOR CHOSEN TO RECEIVE SPECIALIZED TRAINING AT PRINCETON UNIVERSITY Plasma Physics is solving some of the most complex problems in the universe. There are limitless possibilities ranging from harnessing plasma to produce fusion energy in nuclear reactors, prediction of space weather events that affect power grids and onboard computers, to applications in microelectronic fabrication by plasma etching in the creation of therapeutic materials to aid in wound healing (The American Physical Society, 2022). Plasma Physics is thereby anticipated to be one of the leading scientific fields by FY2042 (Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, 2022).

Princeton University is not only one of the leading institutions of higher learning but is renowned for its experimental research conducted in its Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPL). The University has produced graduates in Plasma Physics who go on to work at leading STEM industries and governmental agencies such as: Analogic Corporation, The Center for Space Physics, United States Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Oakridge National Lab, and Fermi Lab. As a part of Princeton University’s initiative to stimulate, educate, and recruit new talented students into Plasma Physics, PPL hosted a workshop during August 16-19, 2022.

Daniel Lawrence Davis, a junior Physics Major at Lane College, was chosen as 1 of 12 undergraduate STEM students out of 122 applicants to attend the coveted all-expenses paid educational opportunity. “The workshop was an intensive 4-days. However, it gave me the opportunity to visualize career possibilities in the field of physics. I had the opportunity to explore applications in plasma physics, electromagnetism, fusion, and computational physics. PPL also offered me an opportunity to return during Summer 2023 for their summer research internship program, which I am still considering. I appreciate the opportunities shared by my advisor and Physics Department Chair, Dr. Nicholas Wolff, Division Chair Dr. Melanie Van Stry, and the entire Lane College Natural and Physical Science Division,” Davis replied.

MS/South Connectional Usher Day Program Submitted by Patricia A. Anderson MS/South Region Usher President

The Mississippi/South Region Ushering Ministry of the 4th Episcopal District under the Leadership of Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, celebrated their Connectional Usher Day program on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at the Eden CME Church in McCarley, MS. The program this year was hosted by the Ushers of the Greenwood/Jackson District, where Doris Powell serves as the District Usher President.

This was the 6th year for the program, and the first in person since COVID19 restrictions have been eased.

And although in the last two years we didn’t meet in person because of the pandemic, the program still went on via telephone conference call. (Zoom was still new the first year.)

The purpose of the annual Connectional Usher Program is to bring Ushers and other church family together to worship and fellowship, and to let the ushers know how much their service to the church is appreciated. At the program this year, the Ushers were very happy to see the others, and COVID protocols were adhered to.

The MS/South Region Usher’s President is Patricia A. Anderson. Under her leadership, the Ushers have had their first MS/South Region Usher Appreciation Banquet, which was successful. She has implemented an annual usher training for the Region.

During the pandemic, the training continued via telephone conference call. There are currently plans for an Usher Fellowship via Zoom. Also, instead of reading her annual year of service report (paper copies are made available), President Anderson does a video report to show the work of the Ushers of the MS/South Region.

It is Patricia’s desire to showcase the men, women, and youth who work tirelessly behind the scenes to greet members and friends each Sunday with a smile.

Throughout the conference year, the MS/South Region Ushers have continued to meet monthly via telephone conference calls to check in on each other and to share announcements of upcoming programs in local churches. There are also birthday recognitions.

This conference year, one of the goals for the District Usher Presidents is to conduct quarterly outreach

in their districts to check on their ushers. (There are times when it is a little more frequent.) The response from the Ushers has been very welcoming. The plans for this conference year are to continue checking on each other, training, and to have a CPR training class.

The guest speaker for the annual program this year was Rev. Thomas Keys, Pastor of West Hill CME Church in Lexington, MS. Rev. Keys’ message about the importance of all of us serving on one accord and being bold for Christ wasn’t just for the Ushers but for all in attendance. The ushers, in their proper attire, which included having on their white gloves, proudly processed in singing, “I Am On the Battlefield,” with music provided by Mr. Floyd Keys of the West Hill CME Church, Lexington, MS. On Sunday, October 23, 2022 the Williams Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Augusta, Georgia, (6th Episcopal District, GA North Region, Augusta-Sparta District) celebrated "Pink Sunday," commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, by recognizing Breast Cancer Survivors and all survivors of cancer. We also remembered those who are no longer with us due to succumbing to cancer.

On Saturday, October 8, 2022, the Charleston-Columbia District delivered snacks to the Miles College football team and band. The district showed their support of this CME college while they were in Columbia, South Carolina, to play against Benedict College. Head Football Coach Sam Shade, Athletic Director George Pugh, Band Director Willie Snipes, and students were very appreciative. Three hundred students and staff received nabs, chips, and bottled water.

The snacks were delivered by James and Theresa Muldrow who are members of Cleaves Memorial CME Church in Columbia.

They were honored to meet the amazing Miles College staff and students. The Golden Bears coaches and the Purple Marching Machine band director are doing a splendid job of working with these young people who are representing our CME college and our future. These students are exemplary in every way.

Many thanks to Bishop and First Lady Walker, Presiding Elder and Lady Maness, Mr. Roman Cunningham (District Lay Leader), Rev. Kennith Johnson, Sr., Rev. David Edmond, and the churches of the Courageous Charleston-Columbia District, a.k.a. “The Triple C” District for their support of this endeavor.

The Muldrows strongly suggest that we as CME’s support our CME colleges by attending games when they are in our area and showing our appreciation in some way.

Tyler District Conference "Love Feast" Makes a Positive Difference Submitted by Mrs. Sharon Roy Tyler District Reporter

Under the leadership of Presiding Elder H.Q. Dickerson, the Tyler District Conference was hosted by Mt. Nevelton CME Church in Bullard, Texas, on October 15, 2022. The host pastor was Rev. Marilyn Briggs. The event began at 10:00 a.m. with praise music followed by a morning mediation given by Rev. Brian Lightner, pastor of St. James CME Church of Tyler, Texas.

After the meditation, Elder H.Q. Dickerson led the congregation in an “Observation of the Love Feast.”

During the feast, the entire congregation participated in a symbolic communal meal (bread and water) intended to promote fellowship, brotherhood, unity and Christian love among participants. Hugs and smiles were plentiful throughout the feast.

The Love Feast was followed by two dynamic speakers from the Tyler District who shared their expertise in the areas in which they work. Dr. Cirsten Peterson, known as Dr. Nanny, owner of two childcare facilities Presiding Elder H.Q. Dickerson in the city of Tyler, Texas, discussed the importance of having trustworthy childcare and provided everyone with pertinent information about her businesses. Dr. Peterson is a member of Carter Temple CME Church where Rev. Brian Keith Thomas is the pastor. The next speaker was Ms. Tonya Fuller, Faith Based and Community Engagement Specialist from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Ms. Fuller shared information regarding the need for churches to become more involved in supporting children who have been taken from their homes due to unstable conditions. She also provided data that assisted in understanding the importance of getting involved in a child’s life at a very early age. Ms. Fuller is a member of Woodville CME Church in Rusk, Texas, where Rev. Ira Jones is the pastor.

Following the speakers, Mrs. Sharon Roy gave an update concerning "One Church One School" initiatives in the Tyler District, and Rev. Brian Lightner provided information regarding Tyler District initiatives with Social Concerns. He emphasized the importance of getting out to vote.

CENTENARIAN, Mrs. Dorothy A. Pride, celebrated her 100th Birthday with family at the downtown Chattanooga Doubletree Hotel on August 26, 2022. Mrs. Pride was born on August 26, 1922, in Denmark, TN. She was married to the late Rev. William M. Pride, II. They were blessed with 11 children, 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Family members returned home to celebrate the Centenarian's birthday from several states around the United States.

Mrs. Pride is a Retired Teachers Assistant in the Chattanooga Public Schools. She is an active member of Phillips Temple CME Church, Chattanooga, TN and the Widow Harvest Ministries. Mrs. Pride enjoys traveling, reading, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

The prelude of the service was the invoking of the Holy Spirt, a call profoundly given by Brother Bryan Jones Richardson.

The living word of God, from the book of Acts, chapter four, verses 13 – 21, was shared by Brother Jimmy Jucks.

In Acts chapter four, we see courage as it is displayed in the life of Peter and John. The scripture describes courage as: “One Person with Courage Is a Majority.”

He also led the congregants in the recitation of the Connectional Sunday Litany, “Moving Forward with Boldness.” The service proceeded with the critical and clarion call to the congregants to register and vote in The 2022 Georgia Midterm Elections. “We Win When We All Vote!”

Sister Wanda Harp stressed to the congregants their need to understand the importance of the Georgia Midterm Elections. She indicated that it was imperative that all citizens exercise their right to vote. Computers and snacks were set-up in the fellowship hall allowing congregants to check their voting status following the morning worship service. We as Christians should be diligent in registering to vote and subsequently voting in all elections. All votes count. All voters matter. Sister Harp shared the regulations regarding voting. Follow the election procedures, we must all go to the polls. A warm

by Reverend Amina McIntyre, who led a very sacred and moving prayer during the Altar Call. The prayer included a request of God to grant Representative Jackson the ability to inspire the congregation with his message: “Bold Faith, Christian Lay, Moving Forward Together!" Reverend McIntyre prayed for the church world-wide.

Representative Jackson represents Georgia District 64, which includes the cities of Fairburn, Fayetteville, Tyrone and Union City. Importantly, he stated that the speaker is a Christian. Representative Jackson attends and is a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta.

He has received numerous honors and accolades from various civic, community and fraternal organizations.

Representative Jackson is a loving husband, proud father, grandfather, politician, and community advocate.

Among his many organizational affiliations is his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the Sigma Omicron Lambda Chapter, where he serves as vice-president.

Representative Jackson acknowledged Reverend Everett and Brother Carl Montgomery, Lay President, for their invitation allowing him to share with the congregation.

He spoke on the boldness of Nehemiah. “Nehemiah, saw a need, he reacted, he had a vision, established a plan and mobilized others to join his boldness cause.

Nehemiah, as a servant, was bold in his actions when he asked time off from his master for time to rebuild the wall in the city of his father.” Representative Jackson emphasized the fact that, “exercising boldness, requires good character, unlimited courage, and unselfish love for Christ. True boldness is Christ-centered. Christians cannot be bold on their own.” “We represent anything and everything but God.” “When are we bold enough to speak truth into power?” “When are we bold for Christ?”

“When do we represent God?” Representative Jackson closed his message with, “Live out the word in Matthew, chapter five, verse 16: Let your light shine.”

The invitation to Christian Discipleship followed the powerful message of Representative Jackson. Reverend Stanley Merritt praised Representative Jackson for the message. Reverend Merritt said the message was tailormade for us. He invited those who needed salvation to come to the altar to profess their belief in Christ and to be received as members of Westside. Reverend Merritt offered prayer.

Special presentations were given by Brother Sommerville.

He presented Representative Jackson with a plaque in honor of his dynamic message. His message was truly a blessing to the congregations. A special plaque was given to Sister Elvenia Davis for her dedication to the Lay Council as "Member of the Year."

Reverend Everett, gave remarks, thanking Representative Jackson for his outstanding message. His message was truly a blessing. Reverend Everett also thanked all the participants for their participation and pronounced the benediction.

The Clen D. Moore and W. Jean Moore Endowed Scholarship was established at Northwest Community College on November 8, 2022.

The late Clen D. Moore graduated Mississippi Industrial College (MIC), (BS 56) with a degree in Mathematics, and his wife, Mrs. W. Jean Davis-Moore graduated MIC (BA 60) with a degree in English. Mr. Moore was employed for 40 years in the Tate County Schools as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and as an Assistant Superintendent of Education. After his retirement, he was employed by ICS (Institute of Community Services, Inc) Headstart. The ICS Headstart Center in Coldwater - the Clen D. Moore Headstart Center - is named in his honor.

Mrs. Moore worked in the Tate County Schools as an English teacher, and as Chairperson of the Division of Languages and Communications Department at Northwest Community College.

It started when I needed Bible class teachers in the Lutheran congregation I serve as an associate pastor. The most obvious candidates had already declined. I opened the church directory to the first page and browsed through the names. I called a handful of people I thought might be a good fit. Once I had called my first choices, I went back to the beginning of the directory and started on my second choices. It hit me somewhere around the letter M: there must be a better way to find leaders.

That moment of desperation inspired me to develop a better way. My idea was to put in place a process for identifying leaders before there is a need. I share it in the hope that it will help others identify, develop and dispatch leaders.

The key to this system is that it is person-based rather than need-based.

This is how it works: Long before there is a need, I begin by praying for God to identify leaders in the congregation. After spending time in prayer, I ask current leaders in the congregation to suggest names for potential leaders. Once I have a list of roughly 15 individuals, I send them a letter introducing our leadership development process. I explain that I have been praying about our congregation’s future leadership and that their names have surfaced as potential leaders. I invite them to pray about this as well and to consider being part of a future leader pathway.

The pathway has three components: participants read a book with other future leaders, pray about the possibility of leading in our congregation and attend occasional gatherings of the future leaders group.

The letter notes that the timeline for this process is short -- roughly six months -- and the week-to-week time commitment is limited. And it makes clear that there is no obligation to take on a leadership role once the process is completed. I’ve found that if I send this letter to 15 individuals, typically five will accept the invitation.

When the group is in place, I set aside sustained time to pray for the participants individually during my monthly halfday prayer retreats. I pray that God will be present in their personal lives, lead them toward spiritual maturity and provide whatever they need to thrive as leaders.

I give the group a book to read. My choice is “Making All Things New: An Invitation to the Spiritual Life,”

by Henri Nouwen. Although this is not a leadership book, it

is helpful for developing spiritually mature Christian leaders because it’s an invitation to be centered on Jesus rather than being fragmented by the chaos of daily life. (Others might choose another book to suit their needs.) Once everyone has had a chance to read the book, we come together to pray, discuss the text and get to know one another. Every person in the group is given the opportunity to share why he or she has decided to be part of this process. Participants can also share fears or concerns they may have about becoming leaders.

A month after our first meeting, I send handwritten notes to the individual participants letting them know that I have been praying for them. A month after that, I send a follow-up email to the group with a few more reflections on the book that we all read. Two months later, I begin scheduling meetings with each person to get to know them better, discuss the book further and talk about leadership in a more personal way. This may sound like a lot of work for the group leader, but it really is not. The total time I need for the prayer, writing a few notes, and some meetings amounts to less than 10 hours.

The process is simple. Still, it’s often messy. Some people come to the end and realize that teaching is not a good fit for them. I have had others start out hoping to be Bible class teachers and end up serving on our governing board. Another person took two years to find a good place to serve. Generally after four to six months, people’s skills and passions emerge. For instance, one person realized that he was often sought out by co-workers to talk about Christianity.

We recognized that he was skilled at being a Christian in the workplace, and he’s now teaching a Bible class on that topic.

I’ve been using this process for three years now, and it has been incredible to see how God works through it. One woman had begun the process with a vague sense that there was something missing in her life and God was calling her to do something new. After praying about this and talking with others, she had a steady realization that she needed to do something with women’s Bible study.

Meanwhile, I had noticed a need in the congregation for an evening women’s Bible study. When I asked her to lead it, she began to weep. She told me that this opportunity was an answer to her prayers. And it was clear that God had put all the pieces together.

What would it look like for your congregation or organization to develop leaders before there is a need? The system you use may resemble what my congregation does.

It may not. But regardless of how you develop leaders, if you begin the process long before there is a need, you’ll be able to skip the frantic search through the directory.

Waiting until you need a leader is the worst time to find one. Develop future leaders by praying for them, praying with them and discovering the gifts God has given them. Develop your leaders first. And then find a place for them to serve.

Betty Ruth Beene-Stephens

Rev. Carole E. Richardson

Betty Ruth Beene-Stephens entered God’s eternal glory on February 25, 2022. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, she was born October 15, 1935.

She was in the first graduating integrated class at Shortridge High School. “Betty Ruth,” as she was affectionately called, attended Indiana University where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter. She transferred to Indiana Central University (University of Indianapolis) and later obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Central State University. She earned a master's degree from Butler University.

Mrs. Beene’s career with the Indianapolis Public School System spanned over 40 years. She began as a reading consultant, then spent years as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and administrator during her tenure at IPS. A dedicated educator, she became a principal and touched the lives of students, parents and the communities at IPS #79, Edgar Evans IPS #11 until it closed, and at Anna Brochhausen IPS #88, where she retired.

Betty Ruth was a lifelong member of Phillips Temple CME Church, Indianapolis. She loved her church and faithfully served in various leadership positions and in several ministries. She served as Director of Christian Education, member of the Steward Board, and President of the Missionary Society. She was the primary founder of the Phillips Temple Educational School, O. D. Walker Academy; co-author of the book, “God in My Momma’s House,” co-author with Bishop Othal Hawthorne Lakey of the book, “History of the CME Church,” and submitted articles for many publications including The Christian Index. As a member of the CME Church Connectional Board, she loved attending conferences all around the world and took great joy in preparing for local, regional and national conferences. She was also involved in several organizations including Jack and Jill Indianapolis, the Book Lovers Club, and Eleganz Social Club.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Lori Bonner; son-in-law, Damen; grandchildren, Darien and Danielle Bonner, a host of nieces and nephews and her beloved godson, Hon. Gregory Porter.

A native Washingtonian, Carole Elaine Richardson was born on January 3, 1938. She was the eldest of three children and only daughter of the late Annie and Frank Govan. She received her early education in the District of Columbia Public School System. It was during her early years that her nurture in the Christian faith began. At an early age she was baptized at Vermont Avenue Baptist Church and was active in the church ministries for children and youth.

After graduating from high school, she married the late James B. Hawkins Jr. Their union was blessed with two children, Michael, and Deborah. Carole was employed at the United States Postal Service, where she worked for 33 years before retiring. Throughout her postal career, she held numerous management positions in Customer Service Operations. As a postal employee, Carole used every opportunity to avail herself to numerous courses in Business Administration and Management. She studied at the University of Maryland, US Department of Agriculture Graduate School, and the Postal Employee Development Center.

In 1966, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Henry R. Delaney, Carole joined Israel Metropolitan Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. During this time, she married the late James Richardson. This union was blessed with a daughter, the late Janell Richardson. At Israel, Carole continued to serve in the ministries of the local church. Her areas of ministry were with the Board of Christian Education & Formation, formerly the Board of Christian Education; as well as the Stewardess Board #5, and The Women’s Missionary Society.

Through the years, her ministry expanded in the local church and extended to the District, Region, and Connectional levels of the church. Carole’s responsibilities grew from member status to leader.

She served as the Women’s Missionary Society’s Secretary, Thelma J. Dudley Missionary Education Department at the Local, District, and Region levels; Director/President of the Board of Christian Education and Formation at the Local, District and Region levels; Connectional President of the

Christian Educator's Council; the Seventh Episcopal District Missionary Institute Director; President of the Washington – Virginia District Women’s Missionary Society; Secretary of the Washington-Virginia District Conference and New York-Washington Region Annual Conference Assistant Secretary and Secretary.

Blessed with the gift of teaching, Carole was a true Christian educator. She served as a Bible Study and Church School teacher, workshop facilitator, seminar and retreat coordinator, and speaker. All along her Christian journey, she studied to show herself approved. She attended numerous institutes, conferences, retreats, and training sessions. Carole completed the ITC Certificate Program and received a Certificate in Theology in May 2010. She completed the courses in Christian Education conducted by the Department of Christian Education. She went on to receive the Certification in Leadership in Christian Education Certificate at the 2011 CME Convocation; and the Certificate of Christian Education for Clergy at the 2013 CME Summit. Her studies also included the training given by the Committee on Ministerial Examination of the New York-Washington Region Annual Conference, and in July 2012, Carole was ordained Elder.

Carole’s leadership and teaching abilities were exercised in the community, as well as the church.

She was a charter member of WOW – Women of Wisdom, an ecumenical women’s fellowship group. At the time of her transition, she was the group’s leader.

She worked as staff member/registrar of “The Hand of God Biblical Institute.” For thirty years she served on the Board of Directors of the Washington Postal Employees Federal Credit Union, serving as Chair of the Board for twelve years. She also participated with Church Women United, DC Unit.

One of Carole’s favorite pastimes was spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed their holiday gatherings that always included a spread of delicious food. When not with her family, she loved to read, watch “Law & Order,” the Hallmark channel, work puzzles, travel, and shop. Sunday dinners at restaurants with tasty food and friends also brought her immense pleasure.

On November 7, 2022, God called Carole to her eternal rest. Left to cherish the memories of Carole Elaine Richardson are: her son, Michael B. Hawkins (Cheryl); her daughter, Deborah M.

Peterson; five grandchildren, Michael E. Rice (Aisha), DaShante A. Peterson, Terrell D. Peterson Sr., (Kim), Kristin M. Hawkins, Kirbi M. Hawkins; seven great grandchildren; Darius Rice, Deandre Route, Dionna Route, Tamia Peterson, Tatiana Walker, Tahniya Peterson, Terrell D. Peterson Jr.; two great-great grandchildren, Cataleya Rice, and Nori Route; two brothers; Francis Govan (Linda), and Robert Govan; her best friend; Leila Franklin, a devoted adopted daughter; Alfreda Quinones, adopted sons; Arthur McCloud and Rev. ANNOUNCING BOLD MONEY MATTERS! A FINANCIAL LITERACY AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM FOR CME CLERGY!

PRESS RELEASE We are overjoyed to announce the CME Church is the recipient of a 4-year ($1 million) grant from the Lilly Endowment Foundation. The grant will fund a program to provide a financial literacy educational series to CME Clergy, as well as support a fund to provide direct aid to program participants. In keeping with the quadrennial theme, we are tagging this program as “BOLD Money Matters”!

The program officially began September 1st with a targeted launch of the actual educational series in early 2023. During the first months of our start up, we will launch our website, finalize our timeline and put other details in place. The anticipated dates for the Spring 2023 session are Tuesdays between February 7th and March 28th at 8 pm Eastern. The series are free for CME Clergy, but registration will be required. Registration will be open in late fall 2022.

The program has multiple phases: 1. In early 2023, we will begin the 8-session class series. These sessions will be taught live via an online platform. We will offer the 8- session series two times per year for the duration of the grant period.

2. In 2023, we will launch the "Ministerial Excellence Fund" to provide emergency assistance for certain debts or unexpected expenses and will not have to be paid back.

Applicants for funds must complete the class series prior to applying as well as meet other eligibility criteria. The criteria and an online application will be posted on the website after the first series of classes begin.

3. By mid-2024, we plan to add a self-guided online teaching module with advanced courses in finances, financial literacy, financial planning.

4. In 2025-2026, we will add a final dimension to the program, which would be education and consultation for local church leaders and their pastor on topics like "creating a budget", "planning a capital/building fund campaign", "levering property assets".

According to financial planners and consultants for churches and nonprofit organizations, a fundraising plan will help the church have a clearer picture and view of their mission and goals. How much do we need to fulfil these goals and where will we get it? Consider these top Church Fundraising ideas. (Other than titles and offerings) for churches in 2021and responses from a leader and pastor in our church: Basket Raffle. ... Because there is no guarantee of return, I would not do this. For me, raffles are similar to gambling and lotteries, the kinds of which make more money than they give out and target the poor and gullible who could, over the long run, invest and use their money in better ways. Further, the psychology of such is the same as that of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Small beginnings lead to larger things. The same principle is in effect in doing good. A donation would make more sense to me as I am still supporting the cause.

Church Yard Sale. ... As long as the items are not junk or refuse, I could support this because it allows the dignity of those who might otherwise not receive and benefits both donor and buyer.

Host a Community Event. ... These provide a benefit to both the host and the community, usually providing entertainment or informational value as well.

Conduct a Bottle and Can Drive. ... I would support this as it gives an opportunity to give to those who are in need or to support ministries that do so. Pantries and disaster relief agencies come to mind. In most cases, these are easy to do.

Host an Auction. ... While these may be considered by some a sort of raffle, this is no different than the common purchase of many everyday items, may provide a higher income in the end, and if I am not the highest bidder, I lose nothing. I don't participate in auctions where I lose my money.

Virtual Offering Plate. ... Not only do I support what I think this means, but I offer it to members and supporters of my church. There is a fee for the service, but this is the same amount or kind as is paid for any other virtual purchase.

Host a Movie Night. ... This is a great idea. If there is a fee attached, this does not make the church a business with a sole or primary profit motive, at least, it should not. Fellowship and discipleship are or should be the primary goals.

Partner with a Local Business. This too is acceptable, and actually Biblical. There are those in business who support the work of the church, and many are run by Christians, including some of our own church members. If we can agree with their business ethics and practices, that is even better. I would not want to accept money from known unscrupulous businesses or questionable sources without a desire and attempt to give a Christian witness. I certainly have not accepted money for the church that I suspected might compromise the witness of the church in the community.

What does your local church’s fundraising plan consist of? Is it openly discussed, evaluated, and communicated to the congregation? Is your ministry of Christian education a part of the plan’s implementation?

Henri Nouwen writes in The Spirituality of Fundraising. “Fund-raising is a subject we seldom think about from a spiritual perspective… from the perspective of the gospel, fund-raising is not a response to a crisis. Fund-raising is, first and foremost, a form of ministry. It is a way of announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission.

Female Bishops Came Through Broomfield Submitted by Kim P. Brittingham and Renee D. Gary As we know, history tends to repeat itself. This was truly the case when the second female bishop was elected in July 2022. Both ladies are committed to the work of the Lord and possess a servant’s heart. Broomfield Memorial CME Church has the honor and privilege to claim both Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton and Bishop Denise Anders-Modest as our own.

Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton calls Richmond, Virginia, her second home where her mother lives and became a member of Williams Temple CME Church (now Broomfield Memorial CME Church) in 1987, with her two young sons. While she was at Williams Temple CME Church, she was very instrumental in helping and participating in the process to rename the church to Broomfield Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. She was also very active in the Young Adult Ministry by teaching, and she served on the ministerial staff.

Bishop Denise Anders-Modest joined Broomfield CME Church (now Broomfield Memorial CME Church) in 1990. Here she preached her initial soul stirring sermon titled, “These Dry Bones.” In 1991, she was ordained by Bishop Oree Broomfield as a Deacon under the guidance of Rev. Michael K. Williams. Her thirst for the ministry has become her lifelong mission, which is to preach and teach God’s Word.

We, the Broomfield Memorial CME Church family, are very proud of these accomplished women of God. Congratulations to Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton and Bishop Denise Anders-Modest on reaching the status of bishop in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. We already know that with God’s help and guidance both will continue to do great things and continue to make us proud.
