Nicholls Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Marcus Mariota threw a touchdown pass and ran for two additional scores and the No. 3 Oregon Ducks made easy work of lowertier Nicholls with a 66-3 victory in the season opener on Saturday. Mariota, who set an Oregon record with 38 touchdowns last season as a redshirt freshman, completed 12 of 21 passes for 234 yards before sitting after the third quarter when the Ducks had built a 45-3 lead. Mariota also ran for 113 yards for his second career game with more than 100 yards rushing. De’Anthony Thomas ran for 128 yards and two more touchdowns for Oregon in the debut of new head coach Mark Helfrich. Nicholls’ score came on Andrew Dolan’s 35-yard field goal in the second quarter. Quarterback Beaux Hebert made his first start for the Colonels, but was hit hard by Oregon cornerback Terrance Mitchell late in the first quarter and left the game. Under a new NCAA rule this season, players who ``target’’ and contact defenseless players will receive a 15-yard penalty and can be ejected. Hebert, the son of former New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, did not return after the hit and was replaced by junior Kalen Henderson, a transfer from Tulsa. The Ducks were only barely challenged by Nicholls, a Southland Conference program from Louisiana which has won just one game in each of the past two seasons. The Colonels had never played a team ranked in the top five. On its first drive Oregon scored on a 4-yard run by Thomas. On its next, Mariota found Bralon Addison with a 27-yard scoring pass to make it 14-0. Thomas added a 22-yard scoring run with 6:28 left in the first quarter and Alejandro Maldonado kicked a 29-yard field goal to make it 24-0. Mitchell was ejected when he hit Hebert, who was sliding on the turf, and the replay showed helmet-to-helmet contact. Hebert, making his first career start, completed four of 10 passes for 42 yards before he left the game. Mariota ran for a pair of touchdowns, the first from 12 yards and the second from 46, to put the Ducks up 38-3 at the half. The sophomore quarterback, who was on several Heisman watch lists going into the season, was selected to the Pac-12 first team last season and earned conference Freshman of the Year honors. Byron Marshall ran for a 49-yard touchdown for the only third-quarter score, and Oregon blocked Dolan’s 42-yard field-goal attempt early in the fourth. Colt Lyerla scored on a 3-yard run and quarterback Jeff Lockie - who took over for Mariota in the fourth quarter - added an 8-yard TD run before he was subbed out for quarterback Jake Rodrigues, who found Chance Allen in the end zone with a 23-yard pass for the final margin. Thomas also sat out the final quarter. Last season, he ran for 701 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 45 passes for 445 yards and five more scores. He also scored on a kickoff return and a punt return, becoming the first Oregon player in 47 years with a touchdown four different ways. Marshall finished with 124 yards rushing, giving Oregon its first game to feature three players with more than 100 yards rushing.

#2 OREGON VIRGINIA

59 10

Charlottesville, VA (58,502) Scott Stadium 79 degrees, mostly sunny CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Marcus Mariota and No. 2 Oregon wasted no time showing Virginia all that speed the Ducks bring is more than just talk. Mariota ran 71 yards for a touchdown on the Ducks’ sixth play from scrimmage, turning a third-and-5 that had the crowd jacked up for a defensive stop into a demoralizing introduction into what Oregon football is all about. ‘’They came out in a man-free look and they all kind of ran with their guy and I just kind of hit it up the middle,’’ Mariota said of the play, on which he flared five receivers out, then ran a draw. He was virtually untouched on the play. ‘’The guys did a good job blocking and the receivers did a good job blocking downfield,’’ he said. Mariota finished with 122 yards on four carries, and threw two touchdown passes. De’Anthony Thomas added three touchdown runs, and the Ducks piled up 557 yards of offense in their first trip to Charlottesville on the way to a 59-10 victory that looked frighteningly easy. Thomas ran for 124 yards on just 11 carries, and the Ducks (2-0), who gained a school-record 772 yards last week in beating Nicholls, looked capable of doing it again against a Virginia defense that hoped to keep the Cavaliers in the game. Oregon’s up-tempo offense did all its damage while possessing the ball for just 21:25. As always, Thomas said, their opponents faces’ told the story. ‘’That’s the funny part. For the first couple plays, they’re out there talking, and as the game goes by, guys are just slowing down and you can see by their body language and stuff, and that’s when we know we got ‘em,’’ the fleet junior said. Virginia (1-1) came into the game riding a high after a comeback victory last week against BYU, the first since coach Mike London hired new offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators. Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta’s unit, especially, seemed confident it would be able to slow the Ducks down, but Mariota provided a very early look at what it was up against. ‘’We knew they are fast and athletic,’’ London said. ‘’We tried to practice the pace, but it’s hard to practice for that type of athleticism that they have. It is always a challenge when you face an offense like that.’’ The victory was the Ducks’ 16th in a row on their opponent’s field, the longest streak in the country. Mariota finished 14 of 28 for 199 yards with touchdowns of 30 yards to Bralon Addison and 11 to Keanon Lowe. The Cavaliers trailed 21-0 after 10:32 and never were able to sustain anything on offense. David Watford was 29 for 41 for 161 yards, but threw three interceptions and fumbled once, and all four turnovers led to Oregon touchdowns. Virginia’s lone touchdown came on a 45-yard run by Khalek Shepherd. After Mariota’s long run, the teams exchanged punts, and when the Cavaliers Alec Vozenilek punted again from his 14, Josh Huff deflected the ball out of bounds at the Cavaliers’ 14. Three plays later, Thomas went through the line from a yard out for the touchdown, and it was 14-0 after 7:45. The Cavaliers got their first two first downs of the game on the next series before Watford rolled right, threw downfield on the run and the ball glanced off Dominique Terrell’s hands into the arms of Terrance

Mitchell, who returned the interception 16 yards to the Virginia 40. On the next play, Thomas went around the right side and down the sideline, tight-roping the line for a touchdown, and it was 21-0. Oregon Virginia

Game 3 - Sept. 14 TENNESSEE #2 OREGON

Tennessee Oregon

14 59

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Marcus Mariota threw for a career-high 456 yards and four touchdowns and No. 2 Oregon handed Tennessee its first loss of the

season, 59-14 on Saturday. Freshman Johnny Mundt, who replaced ailing tight end Colt Lyerla, had five catches for 121 yards and two TDs for the Ducks (3-0). Josh Huff added six catches for 125 yards and a score. Mariota, who completed 23 of 33 passes, was the first Oregon quarterback to throw for more than 400 yards in a game since Kellen Clemens in 2005. The sophomore quarterback’s yardage ties for the thirdmost in a game in school history. Oregon’s sloppy play at the start - four penalties for 35 yards in the first quarter - helped Tennessee (2-1) take an early lead, but it was fleeting and the Ducks led 38-7 at halftime. Justin Worley completed 13 of 25 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown for the Volunteers, who opened the season with easy home wins over Austin Peay and Western Kentucky. But Tennessee could not keep up with the speedy Ducks, who had 687 yards in total offense compared to 316 for the Vols. Oregon was the first of a tough stretch for the Volunteers and firstyear coach Butch Jones: No. 18 Florida, No. 9 Georgia, No. 13 South Carolina and No. 1 Alabama are among Tennessee’s next five opponents. Oregon’s first chance to score was Alejandro Maldonado’s 37-yard field goal attempt, which went wide left. On the next series Tennessee drove 80 yards in six plays and scored on Worley’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Jason Croom. After Mariota’s 19-yard run got the Ducks to the Tennessee 9-yard line, a fumble and a sack pushed Oregon back to the 15. De’Anthony Thomas appeared to have a 4-yard touchdown catch on fourth down, but it was called back because of pass interference on Oregon and the Ducks settled for a 38-yard field goal by Matt Wogan. Oregon pulled in front 10-7 before the first quarter ended with Mariota’s 16-yard pass to Mundt. Mariota’s 9-yard touchdown run extended the lead. During the game, the sophomore became just the fourth quarterback in Oregon history to rush for more 1,000 yards in his career. Huff was on the run when Mariota hit him and he ran untouched for a 54-yard scoring reception. Oregon went up 31-7 on Mariota’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Daryle Hawkins. Thomas added a 28-yard scoring run for the Ducks before halftime. Tennessee defensive lineman Trevarris Saulsberry was helped from the field following the TD, but it was unclear how he was hurt. Mariota had collected 350 passing yards by the break. He easily extended his string of at least one touchdown in all of his 16 games for Oregon. The streak is third among active quarterbacks. Mariota found Mundt with a 17-yard scoring pass early in the second half. Mundt was the first Oregon tight end with at least 100 yards receiving since Ed Dickson in 2009. Byron Marshall ran 11 yards for a touchdown to make it 52-7 and Oregon pulled most of its starters on the next series. Freshman Thomas Tyner ran for a 2-yard score to close out the third quarter. Alden Hill’s 8-yard touchdown run for Tennessee provided the final margin.

Eugene, OR (56,987) Autzen Stadium 62 degrees, heavy rain and windy EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Marcus Mariota threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and No. 2 Oregon defeated California 55-16 on Saturday night in the rain-drenched Pac-12 opener for both teams. Bralon Addison returned two punts for touchdowns and Byron Marshall ran for 130 yards and two more scores for the Ducks (4-0, 1-0). The game was played as a strong storm swept across the Pacific Northwest, cutting power to more than 26,500 customers in Oregon. It was a sloppy mess on the field, with eight fumbles - four for each team - in the first half alone. The Ducks handled the soggy conditions better, building a 41-3 halftime lead. The driving wind and rain all but shut down the ``Bear Raid’’ offense that new head coach Sonny Dykes had installed at Cal (1-3, 0-1). Cal freshman quarterback Jared Goff went into the game as the national leader with an average of 435.3 yards passing a game. He completed just 3 of 6 passes for 11 yards in the first quarter before he was replaced with backup Zach Kline. Mariota, whose name is mentioned as an early Heisman Trophy candidate, completed 11 of 24 passes for 114 yards and ran for another 33 yards before coach Mark Helfrich sat him during the third quarter. Oregon opened the game with Marshall’s 14-yard scoring run. Mariota threw two touchdown passes, a 19-yarder to Josh Huff and a 14-yarder to Daryle Hawkins before Marshall ran for a 25-yard score to make it 27-0. But the start of the game was also costly for Oregon. Running back De’Anthony Thomas was hurt while returning the opening kickoff. He grasped his lower right leg and had to be helped off the field. The speedy junior leads the Ducks with 338 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He has 485 all-purpose yards through Oregon’s first three games. Mariota ran 2 yards to score in the second quarter before Addison’s 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. Cal finally got on the board as time ran out with Vincenzo D’Amato’s 46-yard field goal. Addison’s 67-yard punt return for a score early in the second quarter made is 48-3. The only other Duck with two punt returns for touchdowns in a game was Cliff Harris against New Mexico in 2010. Thomas Tyner ran for a 21-yard touchdown for the Ducks before Jeffrey Coprich pushed in a yard for a TD for Cal to make it 55-10. Kline hit James Grisom with a 7-yard scoring pass for the final margin. Both teams were coming off bye weeks. The Bears’ last outing was a 52-34 loss to No. 4 Ohio State on Sept 14. The Ducks are the third ranked opponent that Cal has faced; the team also lost to then-No. 22 Northwestern in the season opener. All three teams are undefeated. Oregon put up easy nonconference victories over Nicholls, Virginia and Tennessee. The Ducks have averaged 61.3 points per game, ranked second nationally, while allowing opponents just 9 points a game.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON DUCKS

Game 5 - Oct. 5 #2 OREGON COLORADO

57 16

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Marcus Mariota threw five touchdown passes and ran for two scores as No. 2 Oregon brushed off some early trickery to rout Colorado

57-16 on Saturday. The Ducks’ sophomore connected for two touchdowns each with Josh Huff and Bralon Addison, and played only 2 1/2 quarters. The Buffaloes had Folsom Field in a frenzy when they kept things tight early on, but the crowd didn’t like it when Colorado kept going for field goals while the Ducks were piling up the points. Oregon (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) has scored at least 55 points in all of its games under first-year coach Mark Helfrich, a former offensive coordinator at Colorado, who took over when Chip Kelly left to coach the Philadelphia Eagles. Forcing a three-and-out after the opening onside kick, a 75-yard TD toss from receiver Paul Richardson on a double-reverse and a fourthdown stop had the 40-point-underdog Buffaloes (2-2, 0-2) in the fight early. The Ducks trailed for 6 1/2 minutes, falling behind 3-0 and 10-8, and they were leading just 15-10 when they got the ball at their 25 with 2:08 left in the first quarter. Within a minute, they were up 29-10. Mariota dropped back and saw Addison blowing past his man, and he hit him in stride along the dejected Colorado sideline for a 75-yard touchdown. After Terrance Mitchell’s interception, Mariota connected with Keanon Lowe from 17 yards out for his second TD in 58 seconds, and the rout was on. The Buffaloes reached the Oregon 5- and 14-yard lines on their next two drives but first-year coach Mike MacIntyre went for the field goals both times, just as he did when Colorado’s first drive stalled at the Ducks 16. Answering Oregon’s touchdown machine with field goals wasn’t an effective formula for an upset, but it did keep the Buffaloes from coming away empty-handed. After Will Oliver’s pair of chip shots made it 29-16, Oregon went for it on fourth down from the Buffs’ 27 and 1 and the Ducks converted each time. Mariota walked it in to make it 36-16, capping a drive that took 3:38, a lifetime by the Ducks’ quick-strike standards, and then he hit Huff from 4 yards out to put the Ducks ahead 43-16 at halftime. The Ducks reached the 50-point plateau on their first drive after the break when Mariota found Addison uncovered for a 44-yard touchdown and he hit Huff from 26 yards out before calling it a night. Mariota was 16 of 27 for 355 yards with no interceptions and one sack. Addison had 158 yards on five catches and Huff had 103 yards on five receptions. The Buffs couldn’t corral the opening onside kick, so Oregon started at the 50-yard line. After forcing a three-and-out, Colorado drove down the field for Oliver’s 33-yard field goal. On the Ducks’ next drive, senior Buffs linebacker Derrick Webb dropped an interception at midfield and the Ducks breathed a sigh of relief. Mariota threw a 39-yard pass to Huff, setting up his 2-yard keeper for the score. Pharaoh Brown took the 2-point pitch into the end zone for an 8-3 lead.

Two plays later, running back Michael Adkins took the handoff and pitched to Richardson, who pulled up and connected with D.D. Goodson for a 75-yard touchdown that gave Colorado a 10-8 lead. Oregon Colorado

#2 OREGON #16 WASHINGTON

45 24

Seattle, WA (71,833) Husky Stadium 54 degrees, overcast SEATTLE (AP) - Marcus Mariota was

finally forced to take a fourth-quarter snap for Oregon. He was just as good as he was in the first three. Mariota threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns, added another 88 yards and one TD rushing, and the second-ranked Ducks won their 10th straight over their rivals to the north with a 45-24 victory over No. 16 Washington. Mariota’s passing was nearly spotless, he used his legs to make the Huskies pay when throwing options were covered and was easily the best player on the field. Mariota completed 24 of 31 passes, and ran another 13 times. He threw touchdowns of 4 and 3 yards to Bralon Addison and a 65-yarder to Josh Huff on Oregon’s first possession of the second half. Huff had to be carted to the locker room with an apparent right leg injury in the first half, only to come back after halftime and burn the Huskies secondary. Most impressive, Mariota answered every challenge Washington made. Twice in the second half the Huskies pulled within a touchdown. Both times, Mariota responded by leading the Ducks (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) to touchdowns of their own. Mariota topped 300 yards passing for the sixth time in his college career. Byron Marshall added 106 yards rushing and two touchdowns and while Oregon’s streak of scoring at least 55 points ended at five games, the Ducks passed their first test of the season. De’Anthony Thomas suited up for the Ducks but it was just decoration. Sidelined with a sprained ankle the past two games, Thomas went through pregame warm-ups but never left the Oregon sideline. Turns out they didn’t need him. Bishop Sankey ran for 167 yards and touchdowns of 60 and 25 yards for Washington, but the Huskies (4-2, 1-2) defense that stood stout against Stanford last week was exposed by Mariota and the Ducks. The Huskies gave up 633 total yards. Washington was third in the country giving up just 3.9 yards per offensive play, but the Ducks averaged 7.9 per touch. Sankey was responsible for a major first-half swing that left the Huskies unsuccessfully playing from behind. Tied at 7-7 and driving, Sankey fumbled for the first time this season on a third-down run at the Oregon 31. The fumble was forced by cornerback Troy Hill and recovered by Torrondney Prevot. Mariota went to work immediately, hitting Addison for 38 yards and seven plays later the two connected again on a 4-yard TD and a 14-7 lead. Washington went three-and-out on its next series holding possession for barely one minute. Oregon followed with a seven-play drive, with three plays of 15 yards or more. Marshall capped the drive with a 15-yard sprint untouched and a 21-7 Ducks lead. The Huskies closed to 21-14 on the first drive of the second half when Sankey burst 60 yards on fourth-and-1, but Mariota answered by dropping his long TD pass to Huff. The only other time Washington got within one score, came on Sankey’s 25-yard TD run in the final minute of the third quarter to cut the lead to 31-24. Just as they had done earlier, the Ducks answered. It took less than 90 second for Mariota to find the end zone on a 5-yard run and he added a 3-yard TD pass to Addison later in the fourth quarter for the final margin. Addison finished with eight catches for 157 yards.

Washington quarterback Keith Price was battered for the second straight week. His gutty effort last Saturday in a 31-28 loss at No. 5 Stanford gave belief that this would be the Huskies best chance to stop their losing streak to the Ducks. But Price’s receivers struggled to get separation and he was sacked four times and ran 11 others. Oregon Washington

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Marcus Mari-

ota threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another as No. 2 Oregon overcame the prolific passing of Connor Halliday for a 62-38 victory over Washington State on Saturday night. Mariota kicked things off with a 57-yard scoring dash on the first series of the game for the Ducks, who wore pink helmets, cleats and socks for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Byron Marshall ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns for Oregon (7-0, 4-0 Pac-12). Halliday completed 58 of 89 passes for 557 yards and four touchdowns for the Cougars (4-4, 2-3). His attempts broke the FBS-level record of 83 set by Drew Brees of Purdue on Oct. 10, 1998. His total attempts and completions also broke the Pac-12 records set by Arizona’s Matt Scott last season, and his total yards set a Washington State record. But Halliday also threw four interceptions, including one that was returned 51 yards for a touchdown by Terrance Mitchell early in the fourth quarter. The junior leads the nation with 18 interceptions. Mariota had his first two turnovers of the season, two fumbles that led to first-half Washington State touchdowns, and the Cougars came within 27-21 in the second quarter. The Ducks cleaned up the mistakes in the second half and pulled away, racking up 719 yards in total offense. Freshman Thomas Tyner ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars were coming off a 52-24 loss to Oregon State in Pullman last weekend. The Beavers outscored Washington State 28-0 in the fourth quarter and Halliday threw three interceptions Oregon remained without dynamic running back De’Anthony Thomas, who was in pads and practiced before the game but didn’t play for the third straight game. After Mariota’s opening touchdown, Marshall plowed across the line for a 1-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter to up Oregon’s lead to 13-0. Halliday found Dom Williams in the corner of the end zone with an 11-yard scoring pass, but Marshall answered with a 26-yard scoring run to make it 20-7. Tyner made an acrobatic catch to get to the Washington State 1, then powered into the end zone for the touchdown early in the second quarter. Mariota was sacked and his fumble was recovered by Washington State, leading to Halliday’s 22-yard pass to River Cracraft for the freshman receiver’s first touchdown. He was sacked and fumbled again on the next series and Xavier Cooper scooped up the ball and ran it in to narrow the score to 27-21 with 5:35 left before halftime. Tyner scored on a 66-yard run for the Ducks before Andrew Furney kicked a 49-yard field goal for the Cougars as time ran out to make it 34-24. Mariota found Keanon Lowe with a 10-yard scoring pass and Marshall scored on a 30-yard run in the third quarter before Mitchell’s pick six early in the fourth. The Ducks extended their winning streak over the Cougars to seven straight. Washington State Oregon

Eugene, OR (59,206) Autzen Stadium 51 degrees, cloudy EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Byron Marshall ran for 133 yards and three touchdowns and No. 2 Oregon wore down No. 12 UCLA’s stout defense for a 42-14

victory on Saturday night. Marcus Mariota threw for 230 yards and a score and De’Anthony Thomas returned from a three game absence to run in another for the Ducks (8-0, 5-0 Pac-12). The Bruins (5-2, 2-2) went into halftime with the score knotted at 14 but were shutout by the Ducks in the second half. Brett Hundley completed 13 of 19 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown but also threw two interceptions, including one early in the fourth quarter that led to an Oregon touchdown. He also ran for 64 yards and a score. UCLA has not won at Autzen Stadium since 2004, and hasn’t defeated the Ducks since a 16-0 blanking in 2007. The two teams last met in 2011, when Oregon downed UCLA 49-31 in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game. The Ducks are the highest ranked opponent the Bruins have faced since they played the No. 1-ranked Ducks in the 2010 season. Last weekend UCLA fell 24-10 to No, 13 Stanford. Oregon, ranked No. 3 in the initial BCS rankings released last weekend, was coming off a 62-38 victory at home over Washington State. The Ducks have played one other game against a ranked opponent this season -a 45-24 victory over then-No. 16 Washington at Husky Stadium Oregon got off to a poor start, stymied by its own mistakes and UCLA’s defense. On the Ducks’ second play from scrimmage, Keanon Lowe fumbled a pass from Mariota. The turnover led to Hundley’s 4-yard touchdown run to give the Bruins the early lead. But Rodney Hardrick ran 66 yards on a fake punt and Thomas finished it off with a 1-yard dive for an Oregon touchdown to even the score. Thomas had missed the last three games after injuring his right ankle on the opening kickoff in Oregon’s 55-16 victory over California on Sept. 28. Oregon went ahead 14-7 early in the second quarter with a 40-yard scoring run from Marshall, a sophomore who took over as starter in Thomas’ absence. But Alejandro Maldonado’s punt for the Ducks was blocked late in the half, putting UCLA in Oregon territory. The Bruins capitalized on Hundley’s 11-yard scoring pass to Thomas Duarte to even the game at 14. Midway through the third quarter, Mariota fumbled on first-and-goal at the UCLA 5, but the Bruins were forced to punt and the Ducks quickly responded with Marshall’s 11-yard touchdown run. Avery Patterson intercepted Hundley early in the fourth quarter and the Ducks went on to score on Mariota’s 8-yard pass to Bralon Addison. Marshall added a 3-yard touchdown dash with 8:47 left and freshman Thomas Tyner ran for a 2-yard TD with 2:25 to go for the final margin. It was Marshall’s fifth straight game with at least 100 yards rushing this season. The Bruins were without junior tailback Jordon James, who missed his third straight game with an ankle injury. He had run for more than 100 yards in each of the Bruins’ first three games.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON DUCKS

Game 9 - Nov. 7 #2 OREGON #6 STANFORD

20 26

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Stanford crushed Oregon’s national championship hopes again. Florida State might want to send the Cardinal a thank you

card. Tyler Gaffney ran for 157 yards and No. 6 Stanford hammered No. 2 Oregon for three quarters, then held off a furious rally by the Ducks to beat them for a second straight season, 26-20 on Thursday night. Kevin Hogan ran for a touchdown and played a mistake-free game for Stanford (8-1, 6-1 Pac-12). The Cardinal put on a clinic in how to play keep away from a team that was averaging 55.6 points. Stanford ran 66 times for 274 yards - sometimes behind as many as nine offensive linemen - and held the ball for 42 1/2 minutes. Heisman Trophy contender Marcus Mariota was inaccurate and under pressure much of the night, but he threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, sandwiched around a blocked field goal return for a score by Rodney Hardrick, to pull the Ducks (8-1, 5-1) to 26-20 with 2:12 left. Oregon couldn’t recover a second onside kick and Stanford ran out the clock. And the biggest winner of all? No. 3 Florida State. The Seminoles don’t have to worry about the Ducks nudging them out of second place in the BCS standings. FSU was in danger of slipping to third in the BCS if Oregon could have registered a big road victory against a quality opponent. Now, the Seminoles face a manageable remaining schedule with a good chance to win their way to the BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl in January. Unbeaten Baylor and Ohio State have to be happy, too, with one less hurdle to clear. As for Stanford, it gets first place in the Pac-12 North and the inside track to another league title game. And maybe if things get really weird, the Cardinal can get back in the title hunt. Stanford won a three-point game in overtime at Oregon last year to deny the Ducks a chance to play for the national title, but it didn’t look as if there would be much drama in the return bout on the Farm. Stanford led 17-0 at halftime and added three more field goals by Josh Williamson in the second half. Oregon looked dead in the water after trailing 26-0 early in the fourth quarter with Stanford hammering away behind Gaffney, who set a school record with 45 carries. Even after Oregon finally broke the seal with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to Daryle Hawkins, the Cardinal went on another time consuming drive and attempted a long field goal that would have sealed it. Instead, the Ducks blocked it, Hardrick scooped and scored from 65 yards out with 5:08 left and suddenly it was interesting. Only 5 seconds later it got even more interesting when the Ducks recovered an onside kick. They quickly moved inside the Stanford 5, but got pushed back to a fourth-and-goal from the 12. Mariota threw a touchdown pass to Pharoah Brown with 2:12 remaining, but the time it took the Ducks to get in while burning a timeout was key. Stanford grabbed the next onside kick and Oregon was powerless to stop the clock. Stanford put Oregon in a 14-0 hole, the Ducks’ largest deficit of the season, with a power football clinic that started when the Cardinal came up with a fourth-and-goal stop from the 4 in the first quarter.

Stanford followed with a punishing 96-yard drive that included one long strike from Hogan to Michael Rector. Gaffney’s 2-yard plunge made it 7-0. With a little help from a pass interference call that wiped out an Oregon interception, Stanford made it 14-0 on Hogan’s option keeper from 11 yards out with 11:26 left in the second quarter. And just when it looked as though Oregon was about to get back in it, Stanford linebacker Shayne Skov ripped the ball away from De’Anthony Thomas at the Stanford 2. Stanford followed that with another 96-yard drive, this one on 20 plays that ended with Williamson kicking a 19-yard field goal to end the half 17-0.

UTAH #6 OREGON

21 44

Eugene, OR (56,481) Autzen Stadium 50 degrees, partly cloudy EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Marcus Mari-

ota’s knee didn’t matter all that much against Utah. Oregon’s sophomore quarterback threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns and the sixth-ranked Ducks rebounded from last week’s loss to Stanford with a 44-21 victory over Utah on Saturday. Mariota went into the game with questions about the health of his left knee, which impacted his mobility in the 26-20 loss to the Cardinal. De’Anthony Thomas caught a touchdown pass and scored on an 86yard kickoff return for the Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12). Byron Marshall ran for two additional scores but the Ducks were slowed on the ground by Utah’s defense, rushing for 145 yards after averaging nearly 302 yards a game this season. Utah (4-6, 1-6) was dealt a blow before the game when starting quarterback Travis Wilson didn’t make the trip to Eugene because of a concussion. Backup Adam Schulz threw for 157 yards and a touchdown and ran for another. The loss to Stanford in all likelihood ended the Ducks’ shot at a spot in the national championship game. Depending on how the rest of the season plays out, it may have also cost them a place in the Pac-12 championship game. Mariota, who wore a brace on his knee against both Stanford and the Utes, insisted this week that his knee wasn’t an issue, but wouldn’t say if he was 100 percent. Utah’s lone conference win this season came against Stanford. The Utes have lost four straight since then. Wilson did not travel to Oregon for Saturday’s game. The 6-foot-7 sophomore is averaging 203 yards passing per game this season. He’s thrown 16 touchdowns with 16 interceptions. Schulz had appeared in just three games for the Utes this season, completing 22 of 45 passes with one touchdown and one interception. Mariota hit Thomas with an 8-yard touchdown pass and the Ducks added a 31-yard field goal by true freshman Matt Wogan to make it 10-0 in the first quarter. Wogan took over as Oregon’s kicker for the final three games of the season, replacing Alejandro Maldonado, who missed a 37-yard field goal before halftime of the Ducks’ game against UCLA. The Utes narrowed the gap on Schulz’s 34-yard pass to Jake Murphy with 2:52 left in the half. Murphy was making his return after wrist surgery following the Utes’ Oct. 3 loss to UCLA. It was thought that the junior tight end might miss the rest of the regular season. The Ducks answered the Utes quickly by scoring on Mariota’s 5-yard pass to Josh Huff - concluding a drive that took three plays and just 24 seconds - to make it 17-7 at the half. After a 4-yard scoring run from Schulz, Oregon again quickly came back with Thomas’ touchdown on the kickoff return to make it 23-14. The Ducks extended the lead on Mariota’s 14-yard scoring pass to Johnny Mundt, and Marshall’s 17-yard scoring run made it 37-14 with 32 seconds left in the third quarter. Marshall added a 16-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Soon thereafter, Oregon sat Mariota. With most of the Ducks’ starters out of the game, Bubba Poole ran for a 10-yard Utah touchdown with 6:01 left.

Still a Heisman candidate despite the questions about his knee, Mariota has thrown for 25 touchdowns this season, and run for nine more. He has not thrown an interception since last season. Saturday’s game was the first between the teams since Utah joined the conference in 2011. Utah Oregon

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON DUCKS

Game 11 - Nov. 23 #5 OREGON ARIZONA

16 42

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona raced past Oregon for its biggest win in over two decades. By doing so, the Wildcats ended the Ducks’ national-championship hopes and may have knocked them out of the BCS altogether. Ka’Deem Carey ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns while becoming Arizona’s all-time leading rusher, and the Wildcats took advantage of numerous Oregon miscues to shock the fifth-ranked Ducks 42-16 on Saturday. Coming off a disappointing home loss to Washington State, Arizona (7-4, 4-4) didn’t back off the throttle of its up-tempo offense against the fast-paced Ducks. With Carey bursting through the line to punish defenders and B.J. Denker dinking and dashing with a variety of fakes, the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and kept going for their first win over a top-five team since knocking off No. 1 Washington 1992. Oregon (9-2, 6-2 Pac-12) gave the Wildcats plenty of help with three turnovers and turning it over twice more on downs to end its national title hopes and, possibly, its four-year run of BCS bowls. Carey was the workhorse for Arizona as he has been all season, carrying a school-record 48 times while scoring on runs of 6, 1, 9 and 2 yards to break Art Luppino’s career record of 48 total touchdowns set from 1953-56. Carey also reached 3,913 career yards rushing, breaking the mark of 3,824 set by Trung Canidate from 1996-99. Denker threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 102 more and Arizona had 304 yards rushing, a season-high against Oregon. The normally high-flying Ducks couldn’t keep up in the Wildcats’ final home game of the season. Clinging to national-title hopes, Oregon sputtered most of the day, showing only flashes of the offensive brilliance that had them No. 2 in total offense and third in scoring entering the game. Marcus Mariota threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions, his first since Nov. 17, 2012, against Stanford. The first one was a spectacular play, too, kick-starting Arizona for the monumental upset. It came on Oregon’s first play from scrimmage, when Bralon Addison dropped a pass near the sideline. Arizona cornerback Shaquille Richardson snared the carom and flipped it back to teammate Scooby Wright as he was falling out of bounds. Carey followed with a 6-yard touchdown run. Oregon’s next drive ended with another drop, this one by De’Anthony Thomas on what would have been a big third-down gain. Arizona followed with another touchdown, a 9-yard pass from Denker to Nate Phillips along the left sideline to make it 14-0. The Wildcats kept marching on Oregon’s defense, moving 83 yards in 16 plays for a 5-yard touchdown pass from Denker, who set it up by faking the run, to Terrence Miller to make it 21-3. Arizona got one more chance after stopping Oregon on downs, ripping off 59 yards in 42 seconds for Carey’s second TD, a 1-yard run that made it 28-9 at halftime. The Wildcats’ defense wasn’t bad, either. The Ducks needed over eight minutes to get their first first down and when they finally got a drive going, had to settle for Matt Wogan’s 33-yard field goal after a holding call against tight end Pharaoh Brown

negated Mariota’s 6-yard TD run. Oregon raced down for a 1-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to Brown in the second quarter, but the final two drives of the half ended in failure: Thomas Tyner lost a fumble and Mariota came up short on fourth-and-2 when he was stripped of the ball. The Ducks opened the second half by failing on a fourth-and-2 at Arizona’s 6 and did nothing else until Mariota hit Josh Huff on a 2-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. Arizona answered with a bruising 75-yard drive, capped by Carey’s 49th career TD, a 2-yard run that put Arizona up 42-16.

OREGON STATE #12 OREGON

35 36

Eugene, OR (58,330) Autzen Stadium 47 degrees, cloudy EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Marcus Mari-

ota threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Josh Huff with 29 seconds left and No. 12 Oregon overcame a tenacious effort by Oregon State in the 117th edition of the Civil War rivalry. Mariota threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns - all to Huff, who had nine catches for a season-high 186 yards - and the Ducks (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12) sealed their sixth straight 10-win season. It was also the team’s sixth straight victory over the Beavers in the series. With the Ducks holding a 24-23 lead, the Beavers scored on Sean Mannion’s 4-yard pass to Tyler Anderson to pull in front 29-24 early in the fourth quarter. But Oregon answered with Mariota’s fourth-and-11 pass to Huff for a 12-yard touchdown and the Ducks took a 30-29 lead with 7:56 left in the game. Victor Bolden ran for a 25-yard touchdown to make it 35-30 for the Beavers with 1:38 remaining, but Oregon State’s defense couldn’t stop the Ducks on their final drive. Mannion passed for 314 yards and two touchdowns for the Beavers (6-6, 4-5), who ended the season on a five-game losing streak, their worst since dropping six straight to conclude the 1997 season. Freshman Thomas Tyner rushed for 141 yards and another score for Oregon, which finished undefeated at home for the first time since 2010. The Ducks were coming off a deflating 42-16 loss at Arizona last weekend that ended their Pac-12 and national title hopes. Oregon State are one of nine Pac-12 teams vying for a spot in the seven conference bowl games. The Beavers were thwarted on the opening drive of the game when Mannion threw into the end zone on fourth-and-1 to Brandin Cooks and he was intercepted by Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. Cooks was announced last week as one of three finalists for the 2013 Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s best college receiver. Cooks went into Friday night’s game as the nation’s top receiver with 141.8 yards a game. Following the interception, the Ducks drove 80 yards on seven plays, capped by De’Anthony Thomas’ 5-yard touchdown dash to give Oregon a 7-0 lead. Tyner added a 13-yard scoring run before the first quarter was over. The Ducks were without Byron Marshall, who injured his ankle in the loss to Arizona last week. Storm Woods scored on a 2-yard run for the Beavers to make it 14-7. Trevor Romaine added an 18-yard field goal with 2:33 left in the first half. The Beavers got close again before the break, but Mannion’s pass to Cooks was fumbled into the end zone for a touchback, and the Beavers came away with nothing. Rashaad Reynolds intercepted Mariota on Oregon’s ensuing drive and the Beavers went on to score on Mannion’s 6-yard pass to Terron Ward to make it 17-17 at halftime. Mariota had not thrown an interception this season until he had two in the loss to the Wildcats. He had two more interceptions in the first half against the Beavers. Oregon’s sophomore quarterback continued to wear a brace on his left knee. It is believed that he injured his knee during the Ducks’ victory over UCLA on Oct. 26 and he’s worn the brace since. Oregon State pulled in front 20-17 on Romaine’s 47-yard field goal to open the second half.

But Oregon woke up, and on the next drive Mariota took off on a 21-yard carry despite the brace, before finding Josh Huff with a 28-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead. Oregon State Oregon

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON DUCKS

Game 13 - Dec. 30 #10 OREGON TEXAS

30 7

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was an op-

portunistic defense which stole some of the thunder from the nationallyacclaimed Oregon offense as the 10thranked Ducks put Texas away in the fourth quarter in Mack Brown’s final game as the Longhorns’ head coach. Reminiscent of its bowl win from the previous year against Kansas State, Oregon struck early. Senior safety Avery Patterson jumped on an errant Case McCoy pass and returned the interception 37 yards for a touchdown only 68 seconds into the game before linebacker Derrick Malone capped the night with a 38-yard interception return that ended in the end zone to key the Ducks’ third post-season triumph in as many years. The defenders’ performance marked the fewest points the Green and Yellow had allowed in a bowl game since they dropped a 7-6 decision to Harvard in the 1920 Rose Bowl. It also fueled an 11th win for Head Coach Mark Helfrich, which not only represented a school record for most victories by a first-year head coach but also tied a conference record for most triumphs by a coaching newcomer with three others. The victory not only was satisfying to the Oregon faithful but was of particular delight to defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti with the way the win unfolded. Even though his departure was certainly overshadowed by that of Brown’s, Aliotti had announced his retirement the week of bowl preparations following 24 years in Eugene as a graduate assistant, outside linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. “That’s the first person I thought about when I caught the ball,” Patterson said of his interception on the Longhorns’ first possession. “I wanted to score for him,” said the game’s defensive MVP who added nine tackles. The Ducks held Texas to only 236 yards of total offense, with 79 of that coming on its lone touchdown drive of the evening midway through the opening quarter. McCoy capped the 7-minute drive with a 1-yard scoring plunge to cut the deficit to 10-7. But the remainder of the game was all Oregon as it limited the home-state opponent to only 80 yards of total offense in the second half. Buoyed by their teammates on the other side of the football, the Ducks’ offense displayed touches of efficiency as well as a quick-strike firepower that has been its trademark when operating on all cylinders. Behind a quarterback at close to full strength for the first time in almost two months, sophomore Marcus Mariota dazzled the second-largest crowd in Alamo Bowl history by accounting for 386 total yards to earn the game’s offensive MVP honors. Included was a game-high 133 yards rushing as he set the bowl game’s record for most rushing yards by a quarterback. The two-time first-team all-conference signal caller put Texas on notice early as he eluded the rush on Oregon’s second play from scrimmage to convert a potential loss into a 4-yard gain and a first down. He followed that by tallying 23 yards on the ground over his next two snaps as he ran for all but 1 yard of his final total in the first half. Perhaps the Ducks’ only disappointment was not reaching the end zone more often despite being in control the majority of the game. They capped their first drive with a 25-yard field goal from freshman Matt Wogan to grab a 10-0 advantage prior to the Longhorns mounting their lone scoring drive of the night. But Oregon responded in typical fashion by answering the challenge with a 10-play, 60-yard scoring drive of its own that ended with Wogan’s second of three field goals.

2013 SEASON REVIEW

San Antonio, Texas (65,918) Alamodome Vallero Alamo Bowl

Just when it appeared the Ducks would be content taking a 6-point advantage going into the halftime locker room, their up-tempo attack kicked into high gear, beginning with Mariota’s 33-yard run from his team’s own 12-yard line. Six plays and 55 yards later, the 84-second drive ended with Mariota’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Josh Huff as the game suddenly took on an entirely different complexion. Texas’ switch of quarterbacks made little difference against an UO defense that looked to be on a mission. They held their counterparts to a season-low 56 yards through the air and not even a 130-yard rushing effort from Malcolm Brown would manage to mount much of a threat. Senior defensive lineman Taylor Hart concluded a workman-like career with 11 tackles and senior safety Brian Jackson added nine stops as the Ducks finished the year with 11 wins for only the fifth time in school history.
