MATTHEW KNIGHT ARENA UO ranked 17th nationally among the 330 teams in home attendance (2,102). In 2012, UO added eight of its top-20 biggest home crowds with with more than 5,000 people in attendance for the Nov. 4 meeting with Stanford. Fourteen of the 20 largest home crowds have come during head coach Jim Moore’s tenure. McArthur Court IS the home of Oregon volleyball, and anyone who has seen it will testify it’s a special place. Picture a historic, four-story pavilion, where outside you faintly hear the throbbing roar of the crowd. As you walk in, you experience first-hand the electric atmosphere and the fans’ unmatched reverence. It’s the consummate place to stage a match, and opponents cringe at the thought of playing in Mac Court. As Oregon’s record has soared the past two years, so has the attendance. In Pac-10 Conference action, the Ducks averaged a program record 2,393 spectators in 2008, while its overall average (1,412) ranked 24th among the 369 Division 1 teams. The past three years, Oregon has played in front of eight of its 14 largest crowds ever (including four of the top five that were all over 2,500). Named after Clifton N. (Pat) McArthur, a student-athlete and the university’s first student body president, Mac Court is a centerpiece of the Oregon athletic experience. Visitors liken the fabled west coast facility to the Boston Garden. According to a recent poll, Mac Court was deemed as a Pac-10 visiting team’s least favorite place to play and Sports Illustrated listed it as one of the 12 toughest collegiate settings to play at. The setting is a favorite of television broadcasters who easily capture collegiate volleyball’s excitement thanks to the raucous, court-side student section. With its tradition dating back to 1926, McArthur Court is an ever-evolving facility. A new maple floor was installed after it was made for the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, and the building has undergone nearly $4 million in renovations over the last several years. In 1993, various locker rooms were significantly upgraded, and in 1996, a $400,000 renovation of the main level outer concourse was completed and the Academic Services for student-athletes department was completely updated and redesigned. The venerable facility also received a new roof in the summer of 1996 to the tune of $1.7 million. New court-level seating was completed in the fall of 1997, making it a viable venue well into the 21st century.
2012 SEASON PREVIEW Luckily the Ducks have a number of talented young hitters to take over for Bergsma on the opposite side in 2013 and leave their own mark on the program. Sophomore Canace Finley will make the change from middle blocker to opposite-side hitter. Finley led the team with 86 blocks (15 solo blocks/71block assists) a year ago while ranking fifth in points with 173 (1.55 per set). UO only added one outside hitter from 2013 freshman class but often quality is better than quantity, and quality is what the Ducks receive in Naya Crittenden. The left-hander comes to Eugene from Modesto, Calif., and is one of two Fab 50 list players in the class. Moore expects the athletic hitter to be a key asset in the long run. Middle Blockers

After a season full of “firsts” and “bests” for Oregon Volleyball, it is safe to say the Ducks have taken their place among the nation’s elite.
Bethany Bair and Maddie Magee each are anticipated to play a heavy role from the hitter position this season. Bair, a redshirt senior, has yet to play a match in green and yellow since transferring from Weber State where she was a two-time Big Sky honorable mention. Magee earned a year of experience as a freshman in 2012, playing in 26 matches and converting on 40 percent of her attacks (17kills/35 total attempts).
The 2013 team is forced to replace a number of key players, most notably the 2012 AVCA National Player of the Year, Alaina Bergsma. The Ducks will also be without starting outside hitter Katherine Fischer, starting libero Haley Jacob and Kellie Kawasaki, each of whom appeared in 34-or-more matches last season. But focus too much on the accolades and achievements of former Ducks and you may miss the national-caliber players who will take to the court this season. Among the returners for the 2013 are All-Americans Lauren Plum and Liz Brenner who are joined by 2012 starters Ariana Williams and Canace Finley.
“Martenne has really stepped into it here in the last couple of months and she is really figuring it out,” Moore said. “Bethany is athletic as anyone we have and she’s going to be able to have an impact at different times and she could be in that starting spot as well, so those two give us options to fill the big shoes of Katherine (Fischer).”
A pair of experienced middle blockers will lead the way for Oregon followed by a trio of freshmen. Senior Ariana Williams returns after notching Pac-12 honorable mention honors and serving as the team’s most efficient hitter. Williams finished fourth in kills (301) while attacking at a .334 clip which ranked seventh in the conference. “Ari, offensively, is as good as anybody around and her blocking continues to improve and is much better than it was a year ago, so she will be very solid in that spot for us,” Moore said. Junior-transfer Serena Warner will join the Ducks’ squad after spending two years at Ohio. Warner was named to the Mid-American Conference Second Team in 2012, leading the league in blocks (1.29 per set) and fourth in hitting (.306). Moore expects her impact to be felt immediately, especially on the defensive end.
In all, Oregon returns nine letter winners from the 2012 squad to mix with seven newcomers including five freshman and two transfers. Outside Hitters The Ducks’ All-America hitters tortured opposing defenses last year with the play of Bergsma and Brenner. Brenner was named second-team AllAmerica as well as All-Pacific Region and AllPac-12 with the seventh most points in school history (522.5) and the fifth-most points per set (4.39). She will carry more of the load this season with the absence of Bergsma. “She may not be the tallest or be able to jump the highest, but Liz has an unbelievably gifted athletic mind and has a way of seeing what is going on,” said Moore. “It’s her back-row play that sets her apart offensively.” Behind Brenner is sophomore Martenne Bettendorf who played in 29 matches last season and tallied 54 points in her Duck debut. The Portland, Ore., native will look to be more prominent in the Oregon lineup this season and add to her outstanding resume from the prep

Setters The Ducks have the luxury of arguably the best setter in the nation as Lauren Plum returns for her senior season. Plum led the nation in assists in 2012 (13.37 per set) en route to being named a first-team All-American. The Poway, Calif., product already holds the school record for assists per set by a large margin and is 207 assists away from owning the career assists record. In addition, Plum is the top returning server with 26 aces last season. Shellsy Ashen will back up Plum and gained valuable experience as a sophomore. Ashen played 44 sets last season including 11 of the last 14 in the NCAA Tournament. Libero/Defensive Specialists
Ariana Williams “Serena may have the edge because of her experience and even when you transfer schools I think players can learn a lot in the move,” he said. “She’s an outstanding blocker which I am really excited about and that is going to help a lot. It puts us in a great position even compared to where we were at the end of last season.” Three long freshmen give the position a youthful punch as Kacey Nady (6’2), Haylee Roberts (6’3) and Nicky Kevorken (6’3) join the flock after illustrious prep careers. While all will have the opportunity to be mixed into the lineup, Moore is excited about the development of Nady. “She can contribute right off the bat and her blocking skills are well-developed,” said Moore. “She is a hard-working and solid player already.” Meanwhile, Roberts is the second member of Volleyball Magazine’s Fab 50 List to come to Eugene this season, coming from Bakersfield, Calif., where she hit .478 as a senior and averaged 1.9 blocks per set.
Moore will have options at the libero position after losing All-Pac-12 honorable mention Haley Jacob. Junior Natalie Bookout Gonzalez has the most experience of the group but sophomore Tatum Norton impressed during the 2012

Canace Finley season as a freshman and will vie for significant playing time as a sophomore. Also expected to compete for the starting role is Junior National Team member and Arizona State Player of the Year, Amanda Benson. The freshman who hails from Lichtfield Park, Ariz., is heralded by Moore as the best libero recruit in the country and has an amazing ability to dig balls. “There is no question there is open competition at this spot. Natalie and Tatum have been here so they have that going for them, we have Amanda coming in who was an all-everything and Taylor is a returning honorable mention All-American. We lost a lot with Haley leaving but we have the opportunity to fill her position with a very good player.”
