She cites her passion as developing that sense of security for residents and providing a space where they feel comfortable not only in their own apartment, but in the community as a whole. “I will do anything and everything to foster that sense of community that I felt, like a home away from home,” says Endicott. “We want to make sure everyone understands it’s a revolving door.”

Chanel Friday, a longtime employee of ACC, was so smitten by the company and all it offered that she actually transferred from her home of Kentucky to Oregon to take up the general manager position here at 959 Franklin. Friday describes her experience with the company as full of opportunity and notes a fierce sense of team spirit. “It’s so cool that the network is broad and I can gain experience in multiple different places. I’m really big on fostering employee development but also my own development,” says Friday. “We have great systems in place to help foster internal growth and take care of the people who work here. I feel cared about, and that makes me care about my job and to be passionate about the work that I do.”

The relationship between employees of ACC and the residents living there is one of support and empathy, especially since most who end up working with the company started as student tenants themselves. It can be great to get a free coffee on the way out the door once in a while, but the staff knows students need support with more than just breakfast. Scantrons and green books, essentials for test-taking at UO, are provided at all communities during the peak of midterms and finals. A lot of this attitude is attributed to the 10 Core Values, a system of ideals that American Campus employees hold themselves to. Endicott explained how Value #3, Surprise and Delight, is one of her favorites: “A girl had to have the window in her apartment replaced, so I told her that when they got there she could come down to the office and I’d order a pizza for us so she didn’t have to wait.” This value insists that “good enough” is not quite good enough — ACC would rather go above and beyond. The Core Values include other key concepts of excellence such as pursuing growth, doing the right thing and rewarding achievement.

With employees leading excellence by example, a plethora of superb amenities and walking-distance access to the University, American Campus Communities is actively carving out a space for students in Eugene to feel supported and at home, but the enthusiasm doesn’t stop at the doors of their apartments. The company makes a constant and conscious effort to support the greater whole of the community around them. Heavily involved with the University of Oregon, they make sure the ACC name is familiar throughout the campus community. Whether it’s tabling with snacks and goodies around the EMU, staffing a booth at the Duck Living Fair or sponsoring Oregon Athletics, the company puts their energy where their heart is and shows up for UO students on a regular basis.
