...so, it either takes a whole lotta nerve or a paper-or-plastic bag full of mustard seeds to take on a project like this. By yourself. Sitting night after night, peck-peck-pecking away at a keyboard mounted on a folding tray while your bad back screams "Give us free!!!" from the uncomfy chair your petrified hiney is resting on. I'm sayin': I must be out of my mind, right? But then, this scenario is totally indicative of ME. I've tried fitting in with other mainstream publications - uuummm, let's just say my quirky pen didn't exactly make their toes tap. But anyway, that was kinda like telling Donald Lawrence he can't put any more key changes in his music: Awkward. Hello, REJECTION! Lord knows I tried, I really did. But when the world makes it clear that either A) - they'd rather consume previously chewed Valentine's candy than read your crap, or #2) - you're, well...way too DIFFERENT to play in their reindeer games , then you just throw some Tabasco on that pigeon, fry it on up, wash it down w/a Pepsi & head out to ignite your own vision, rather than play "Yes Man" to somebody else's. And that's why we're here, Sugarlumps. Me - representing the Misfits & Underdogs, sent to ENCOURAGE you. Not trying to be like anyone else, showing my flaws-&- grammatically-incorrect-alls so that just maybe, someone might feel like they can make it after reading RAOP. Even if that someone...is ME.

You’ve accomplished so much that seems far out of reach for those of us enjoying the fruits of your labor from our living rooms. What’s really on my mind is, do you still dream - what was your greatest “leap of faith” moment? “You never stop dreaming,” Dean says as I sit in awe at the opportunity to glean from such an industry giant. Dean’s long list of credits include work on The Biggest Loser, Friday Night Lights, and most recently, the mega-successful television event – The Wiz Live! At the moment though, his open heart is overriding his powerful position. He’s flipped the script of our dialogue to be two regular people having a chat. (I’m almost certain there’s a sermon in there somewhere). “When I was a kid, I had a false idea of what ‘making it’ would be. As an adult, I realize ‘making it' means making a living doing something you love. If you stop being excited about it – go get a different job.” He declares matter-of-factly. “I didn’t know what I wanted when I first started. I had no connections in Hollywood. I came knowing no one, and worked my way up. Everybody has a moment that you have to be willing to smile and take the ‘trash’ out. Adversity is where the metal is tested; it’s how you deal with it that shows who you truly are.” So is it ever too late to follow through on a vision that looks to be more of unfinished business than a dream? “Honestly, we have to be realistic for who we are and what God has given us. Is it too late? Never. Realistically though, certain dreams are not true to who we are intended to be.” Dean pauses thoughtfully & recounts his experience with the legendary singer who owns a pair of the most famous legs in the world. “Obviously I can’t be Tina Turner, but maybe I can be the producer for her. Who we are doesn’t mean give up…it means being open to a better possibility for our truth.” He explains. How do you keep it moving? What makes you persevere? (Dean has paid his dues. The debt he paid reads like a receipt when he responds.)

LEAPING CONT. I’ve heard you speak about creating your own opportunities in life. How do you orchestrate opportunity when rejection stands in your way?
“Not to cast stones, BUT: last year we did Peter Pan Live - it was NOT a rating’s success...and critics didn’t like it. So we went back to the drawing board to figure out how to make it better; more inspirational.” [Resulting in The Wiz Live.]
“When you look on someone’s Twitter, Facebook or social media page, you have to remember for every success, there’s also a FAILURE. No one ever wants to show you that. I try to remind people that the world we live in, there’s lot of information people publish about how great they are. But sometimes we forget there’s hard work in success. You can’t get too down on yourself if you try something that doesn’t work. You just have to dust yourself off & try again until it works."
As a dreamer what does failure look like to you?
“Failure is not trying. You may get disappointed, you may be hurt – but part of life is trying new things, and you have to fail if you’re going to do something great.” (My hands are shaking; he’s walking down my street now.) “You gotta start somewhere and be willing to make mistakes. People who are negative, criticize and unwilling to try but make fun of others who do…that’s what failure looks like.”

I’m a late bloomer, and one who is completely unconventional in all that I do. Consequently, I’m overlooked LOT. I know many others who feel the same way,too. What advice would you give someone who considers themselves an underdog?
“Underdog. Hmmmm. Often, the things that make us unique/different is what make us special and gives us the ability to shine if we just be ourselves. Sometimes, being different is scary, but if we figure it out, that’s our place to succeed and shine!”

Oprah has a lifetime of work that I admire, and I would be excited to work with her! She’s combined meaningful projects with artistic value; the value to entertain. If you can make them [the audience] tap their toes or sing along, that’s one thing. The true value is bringing joy into their lives. Oprah has done that.”

#1 - YOU FAILED. There was no actual FAILURE in your situation, per se. You were just one taco short of a combo. The fixin's for SUCCESS are all still there on the table...you just have to repurpose them for your meal. #2 - IT'S TOO LATE. The same folk who will tell you this are probably the same dudes who will tell a toddler there's no Santa! Time is obviously a hotter commodity than the last shrimp at the buffet bar, but GOD is a GOD of second chances...& extra minutes on our data plans! There's never enough time to waste - but more than enough to KEEP PUSHING!
#3 - YOUR RESOURCES SUCK. Well, yes - they probably do. At least the ones you're FOCUSED on. Stop trying to cook the expired can of Spam way in the back of the cupboard, when there's a big a juicy T-BONE you forgot you tucked away in the back of the freezer. When the shaking, the beating & the pressing becomes real...USE WHAT YOU GOT to find your way out! #4 - WINNING IS NOT AN OPTION. Chile, who told you that? Mamma-n-them? (Prayerfully, NOT). A hater? A bitter EX? Yourself? Did you know GOD has an entire cheering section waiting on you to WIN? You were ANOINTED for your divine APPOINTMENT - Don't stand GOD up! #5 - YOU'LL NEVER MAKE IT! This right here really fries my chicken...the devil is such a stinkin' LIAR! I used to tell myself this all the time. Honestly, some days it still tries to creep up on me like an irritating itch I can't find to scratch on my scalp! But I'm here. Typing these words to encourage YOU. And if you're reading this: YOU'RE STILL HERE, TOO. As long as there is breath in your body YOU WILL MAKE IT!
