But First, Coffee

(Family Features)

Explaining different coffee drinks

A

mericans love their coffee. Millions of people drink at least one cup of coffee per day and many get their caffeine fix with a specialty coffee drink.

Dairy milk is a great complement for any cup of coffee; it’s both a tasty addition and a way to add essential nutrients to your mug. Every type of dairy milk, whether lowfat, fat free or organic, contains nine essential nutrients, including high-quality protein. In fact, milk is the top food source for three of the four nutrients of concern, or the nutrients Americans, including children, are most lacking: calcium, potassium and vitamin D. If you enjoy a morning cup of coffee, here are a few ways to create gourmet coffee drinks at home. How to Make a Cafe au Lait A cafe au lait is simply a strong-brewed coffee drink mixed with steamed milk. The best way to make one is to brew a dark-roast blend in a French press and mix with equal parts steamed milk. There are a few easy ways to froth milk at home. Use an inexpensive milk frother or try this DIY tip: shake your favorite type of milk in a jar until it froths up. Remove the lid and microwave to desired temperature. Now you’ve got warm milk for your coffee and foam to top it off. How to Make a Latte Lattes are two parts milk to one part espresso. Starting your day with a morning latte is a wonderful way to enjoy the buzz of coffee plus milk’s nine essential nutrients, including eight grams of high-quality protein per eight ounces. How to Make a Cappuccino Another Italian coffee drink, the cappuccino’s name comes from the Italian word for “hood.” A cappuccino is made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk and foamed milk. A “dry” cappuccino has more foam while a “wet” cappuccino is closer to a latte in consistency. Whether you prefer a cappuccino, latte or cafe au lait, adding milk to your coffee is a delicious, nutritious complement to your coffee beverage of choice. From espresso to strong brewed coffee - adding dairy milk only adds to the enjoyment. For more tips, tricks and recipes, visit milklife.com.

• Focus on giving preschool age kids a head start on their education. Provide them with fun ways to get started, such as the Write & Learn Creative Center, which features animated demonstrations to teach proper stroke order for uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as drawing activities to inspire skills and creativity in young artists.

Ways to Nurture Early Childhood Development

• Foster language and social skills by spending time each day playing together. The interactions you share are key to cognitive and emotional development as well as social and emotional growth. “Infancy and preschool years are a crucial time of children’s lives, when they are developing new motor, cognitive, language and social skills,” says Dr. Lise Eliot, Early Brain Development Expert and Expert Panel Member at VTech, a world leader in ageappropriate and developmental stage-based electronic learning products for children. “Toys should provide multi-sensory experiences that engage and cultivate a love of learning from a very young age, while delivering the developmental benefits appropriate for each child’s age and stage.”

• Kids are never too young to develop an appreciation for music. Babies can start by playing with tambourines, maracas, toy keyboards and other fun musical toys. Child-sized instruments can improve hand-eye coordination and rhythm, and set kids up for lifelong musical inspiration.

playtime should be safe and fun. But experts say that beyond these considerations, these spaces should incorporate elements that promote early childhood development.

To encourage growth and enrich children’s play experiences, Dr. Eliot and VTech offer these tips: • Include books in the playroom and read often to your child. Doing so will demonstrate well before the school years begin that reading is not just for classroom, but also a recreational activity that can and should be done for fun. Look ahead by adding books that will be age-appropriate in the future. • Development happens extremely rapidly, so seek out learning toys that grow with children. For example, the Sit-to-Stand

• Create safe zones in your house where kids can have free reign to play and explore. “The more opportunity children have for physical exertion and exploration, the better for the development of both their minds and bodies,” says Eliot. MARCH 2016 RENEW

CHANGING SEASONS Tatrece Dunlap Swann

D

uring the month of March, the Lenten season occurs. The Lenten season begins on “Ash Wednesday” (February the 10th) and ends on “Good Friday” (March 25). For many, the observance of the Lenten season is the period of 40 days prior to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and it’s signified by proclaiming a 40 day consecration (which includes a fast of some type). The fast normally includes the giving up of some type of food, activity or comfort that could be challenging to live without. The Lenten season is meant to remind us of that the 40 days was the most intense and agonizing time in the life of Jesus. It’s important to understand that the 40 days isn’t just about what ‘I can’t’ do, or have to give up, but more about focusing on honest self-examination to make determinations of where in your life you need to make positive changes. What would you like to gain at the end of the 40 days? When was the last time you took the time to examine every aspect of your life from a relationship, financial and emotional perspective? It’s possible that many of the mistakes we’ve made came as a result of the decisions and choices we made out of haste or giving little to no thought. What I’ve learned most as I continue to grow in this season of my life, is that it’s not that my choices and decisions weren’t good ones, they just weren’t good FOR me. All things and people that are good aren’t necessarily good FOR you. It’s important to know the difference. If you’re one of the many that will observe the Lenten Season by participating in some type of 40 day fast, let it be intentional and effective, striving for the best outcome. Consider finding someone to serve as your partner for the next 40 days that will honestly hold you accountable for the personal targets you’ve set for yourself. I mentioned at the beginning of this year the goals that I had set for myself, and committed to sharing updates on my progress. One of my goals included training for and participating in a 5K race. I’m happy to share that I’m well on my way and into my second month of training, with an upcoming race “Race for the Community” set for Saturday April 2nd at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, VA. It’s a great event for the community with the hopes of promoting healthy living and positive choices not just for these 40 days, but in the days to come. At the conclusion of this 40 day fast, I know I’ll have a better understanding and appreciation of the changes that have occurred or yet to occur in my life in this season. Although the process at times has been tough for me and it will for you, I’m excited to see the outcome from my commitment. There are specific characteristics associated with each of the (4) seasons, and our lives are no different. I hope these 40 days has encouraged you to embrace this new season and the changes that have come as a result of your commitment! Happy Easter! 6 RENEW MARCH 2016

Tips to Become a More Persuasive

Job Seeker and Entrepreneur

W

e all have heard this famous phrase: “is not what you say is how you say it” In today’s world the art of persuasion is a must needed skill in order to have success, especially if you are searching for a job or plan to start your business. The key in persuading others is to first be sure you believe in what you are saying. I bet you wouldn’t buy a product from a salesperson who has a doubtful and vague sales pitch. Well, this is the same thing for a candidate that goes to an interview and does not have the ability to persuade the interviewer or an entrepreneur that cannot sell his/her skills and/or knowledge. Therefore, the first key point to the art of persuasion when searching for a job or becoming an entrepreneur is to know yourself and be able to sell your abilities, knowledge , experience and skills. If you are a job seeker you will need to study your resume and practice your answers. If you are an entrepreneur you will need to have an assertive and unique sales pitch and also have great listening skills. A great technique that you can use to be successful in persuading others is the SWOT Analysis. Follow these questions as a guide:

prospect client you are meeting? How do your strengths set you apart from other candidates or other companies? • Weaknesses: What weaknesses do you have that can prevent you from having a successful interview or offer a good service/product? How can you overcome these weaknesses?

• Opportunities: What opportunities can you bring to the company that you are applying for or proposing to? • Threats: What threats can occur during the interview or the presentation? How can you manage those threats?

• Some other important factors to consider: Research and learn about the company you are applying for or presenting proposal to. • Use the STAR method when answering questions. (Situation, Task, Action, Results) • Pay attention to your body language.

Be Your Best Self Physically Despite What You Are Going Through Emotionally By: Patrice D. Wilkerson As I sit and reflect on the year that I have had, it amazes me how I am still standing. I have battled heartache, depression, and several disappointments. It was a rough year but I made a vow going forward to be my best self physically despite what I am going through emotionally. My philosophy is that when you work on your outer self you will soon begin to heal your inner self. After months of feeling insecure, I just woke up one day and decided to start working on bettering myself physically. The first thing I began doing was exercising. Every night I take 10 minutes out of my schedule to exercise. Whether it’s jogging in place, stomach crunches, or walking, I make sure I am doing some kind of physical activity. After weeks of exercising, I began to feel better about my outer self which allowed me to restore my confidence. This process allowed me to renew my mind and my spirit. I began to forget about all the hurt and pain that I was in because I was focusing on myself and no one else. Secondly, I began eating healthier by incorporating fruits and vegetables in my daily meals. Also, I cut out eating a lot of junk food and I increased my water intake. The type of foods we eat and what we drink can have serious effects on our bodies. Thus, we have to be careful about what we eat and drink. I must say since I began eating healthier, I feel so much better about my outer self which has allowed me to restore my worth. This new healthy lifestyle that I was living incorporated a positive change in my life which showed me that life is all about making changes that are beneficial to my wellbeing. Being single was a lifestyle change for me; however I learned that this lifestyle change was definitely beneficial to my emotional wellbeing. Battling heartbreak, depression, and several disappointments left me lacking confidence and feeling worthless. I would look in the mirror and point out all the things I wanted to change about my outer appearance because of the hurt and pain that I was left in. I began this journey so that I could feel good about who I was on the outside. I did not do this for anyone else but I did this solely for myself in order to rebuild and restore everything that was destroyed. During this process, I found that taking care of myself physically helped to restore and rebuild myself internally. Throughout my pain, I still was determined to be my best self physically which in return helped me to be by best self emotionally. As women, we should never let anyone destroy our confidence or worth. No matter how much pain and hurt that you endure, always take care of yourself physically and emotionally. 8 RENEW MARCH 2016

Hazel hung the phone on its cradle and sighed. It had only taken two hours to convince Nancy to install a video surveillance system. “Only in the living room, though. And just the kind of that comes on if there’s movement,” she’d insisted. A smile lifted the corners of Hazel’s mouth. Instead of a nanny-cam, she’d be putting in a granny-cam. She’d done it once before in the house of a friend who’d started showing signs of Alzheimer’s. Her family wanted her to stay independent as long as possible, but had needed to keep an eye on her for her own safety. She chuckled. They’d shared a few of those videos with her. Most of her dear friends antics had been humorous. That is until her mind had slipped too far gone

to leave her on her own any more. She played with the phone cord. Nothing wrong with Nancy’s mind. If you didn’t count stubborn, that was. The woman still refused to lock her doors. “If I’ve got a camera going, what’s the point? If anyone comes in that ain’t supposed to, we’ll have proof.” Her friend did have a point. Better to leave the suspect in the dark and an opportunity to return to get caught. That certainly would make her life easier. Not that she didn’t get a thrill from the chase. She’d been more invigorated this past few days than she’d been in years. Since her last case, if she really thought about it. Why had she retired, anyway? Dread filled her stomach. Her last case. And hitting the big seven-five mark. Two very good reasons to let go of her former career. One more little missing lamp mystery wouldn’t hurt anything, though. The phone rang, making her jump and jolting her out of her reverie. She waited until the third ring and picked it up. “Hello?” “Hey, doll. I was thinking about lunch and you came to mind. How about you ride with me to Sally’s for a sandwich? Some of the gang will be there.” “I don’t know. I have a lot to do on this case.” “Case, shmase. You have to eat.” “Yes, but a sandwich at home takes ten minutes. A sandwich at Sally’s takes at least an hour, and that doesn’t include travel time.” “Did you have fun at the play the other day?” She didn’t see what that had to do with lunch today. “Yes.” “Did I offend you or attack you and forget about it?” She grinned. “No.” “Then go to lunch with me. No excuses. No expectations.” Yeah, right. He’d been trying to court her since the three hundred sixty-sixth day after her husband had died. He sure was persistent. “Fine.” “Great.” His enthusiasm overrode the crackling of his aged vocal cords. “I’ll pick you up in fifteen minutes.” She hung up and closed her eyes. “Lord, I need your direction for this case. Just a little hint or break would be great. Oh, and why is it you’re melting my resolve against Harold after all these years?” by No answer came, so she Tracy raised herself off the chair and went Wainwright, Home Manager, Writer, to go freshen up her makeup. Every Way Woman- TV Talk Show ONE-ONE-INTERVIEW WITH CO-CREATOR AND PRODUCER - YOLANDO MITCHELL BROWN

I

t is time again for RENEW Women’s Expo # 5!!! A Lifestyle Celebration Event where we highlight product demos, jewelry, informative exhibits, health screenings, shopping and so much more to be held Saturday March 5, 2016 from 10am -3pm at the Magnuson Hotel and Conference Center in Newport News, VA . We are fortunate enough to have as our hosts, the women of Hampton Roads hottest new TV talk show, Every Way Woman. With us today for a one-one-interview is co-creator and producer at Every Way Woman, Yolando Mitchell Brown. Yiorgo: Where were you born, what was your early life like and what were some of the struggles you had to overcome? Yolando Mitchell Brown: I was born in East Saint Louis, Illinois and mostly my grandmother raised me in my younger years, and my mom in my teenage years. I look at my upbringing more as a blessing then a curse. I don’t believe in the victim mentality. We all have an opportunity in life and choices we can make, so for me I made choices early on, like the age of five. I am very patriotic and I truly believe the USA is the best country in the world for anyone who believes in opportunity and works for it. If it was not, people would not leave their countries, risk their lives to get here. As women we have so many rights here unlike women in other parts of the world who suffer. I believe in the Constitution and the flag and the people need to realize how great America is. We protect, we serve, and we create the resources that are in place for any individual to live any life they choose to live. Y: Who was an early role model that helped to mold you into the woman you are today? Y M B: My grandmother is a fascinating woman and my role model. She is 78 years old. She is very strong in the way she says she is going to do something and does it without complaining. I admire her a lot. She helped raise her seven children, my self and two other sisters and great grand children as well. She had an 8th grade education but she always found a way to know what she wants and go after it. After so-called retirement she started her own catering business. What I learned from her is that hard work never killed anyone, treat people the way you want to be treated and know your worth. They tell me I am very much like her in my determination to succeed and touch people’s lives in a positive way. Y: What is the message or the goal of Every Way Woman? Y M B: Our formula for the show is to show positivity and help people heal. A lot of people are in pain so they turn to the type of shows are a distraction, because its easier to pay attention to somebody else’s drama then to focus on fixing yours. Our show is fun educational and entertaining. It is girlfriends coming together and intimately sharing both their questions and insights, while consulting with guest experts as needed. 7 steps to allergy relief with spring cleaning Step 6: Change is good - for filters. Keep the air that circulates through your home’s ventilation system clean by using filters with a MERV rating of 11 or 12. Change the filter at the change of every season, or every three months. (Set a calendar reminder to remember). Additionally, change filters in HEPA appliances. This helps eliminate allergens, and prohibits mold growth. (BPT)

L

onging for allergy relief? To stop the endless cycle of sniffles, sneezes and wheezes, it’s time to ready your vacuum and rubber gloves. Spring cleaning helps eliminate allergens so you can relax, breathe easy and enjoy the season. “People who suffer from allergies may not realize there’s a direct connection between cleaning your home and reducing allergy symptoms,” says allergist Bryan Martin, DO, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI.) “The more you can rid your home of dust mites, mold, cockroaches and pet dander, the easier you’ll breathe.”

ACAAI recommends seven spring cleaning steps to remove allergens in the home and avoid accidentally letting more in.

Step 1: To sleep, perchance to dream - and breathe. Start in the bedroom where you spend eight to 10 hours a day. Dust mites can flourish during cold, dreary months, so wash your sheets and comforter regularly. Most mites die by drowning, but if you want to use hot water (which will kill slightly more mites) don’t use water that’s over 120 F because it can scald. Remember to also wash decorative pillows. Finish by adding allergy-proof casings to the mattress, box spring and pillows. Keep pets out of the bedroom as their dander can cause symptoms to flare.

Step 2: Gaze out, but don’t open. Window treatments are a magnet for dust and allergens. Pull them down and dry clean, or vacuum each thoroughly. Don’t forget to vacuum blinds and windowsills as well. Tempted to open the windows to let the spring breeze in? Don’t. Unwanted pollen can enter your home and spread everywhere.

Step 7: Get out! And about. Check your home’s exterior for any concerns that may have emerged due to cold weather. Chipped paint, roof damage or cracked siding can lead to mold problems. Make repairs as necessary. These seven spring cleaning steps may take a few weekends to complete, but they’ll help reduce allergens all season long. For more information, or to find an allergist in your area, visit AllergyAndAsthmaRelief.org.

Step 3: When the dust settles, wipe it off. Suit up to win the war on dust by wearing protective gloves and a face mask so you don’t breathe in microscopic mold spores. Next, ditch cotton cloths and feather dusters that kick up allergens, and instead use microfiber cleaning cloths which trap and remove triggers. Wipe down all surfaces including picture frames, knickknacks, plant saucers and ceiling fans. Step 4: Nature abhors a vacuum. You shouldn’t. Move all furniture, and vacuum the dust and dander that collects underneath. Use a cyclonic vacuum, which spins dust and dirt away from the floor, or a vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Additionally, clean vents and return registers to limit dust recirculating. Consider shampooing carpets to remove deeply embedded allergens. Step 5: Scrub-a-dub the mold. In bathrooms, basements and tiled spaces, scrub any visible mold and mildew from surfaces with bleach, or borax mixed with water, then dry completely. The key to reducing mold is moisture control, so use bathroom fans and clean any standing water immediately. You can also help ward off mold by keeping home humidity below 50 percent. Every Way Woman- TV Talk Show

ONE-ONE-INTERVIEW WITH CO-CREATOR AND PRODUCER - YOLANDO MITCHELL BROWN Y: Have you had any wow moments? Y M B: I am always amazed how far of a reach the show goes. This woman from Ohio contacted me today. TV executives tell me that my show cannot impact people because we do not feature famous people in it yet we do impact their lives and they let us know it. Those are aha moments for me. But the biggest aha moment I had was when we did a live show on breast cancer and I believe everyone there had an aha moment because we had men and women talking about breast cancer when a 15 year old young girl says, “I am 15 and I have a lump on my breast.” It was an aha moment for all of us because everyone else was asking about people a lot older who had breast cancer and here is a 15 year old who is devastated and she knows that something is wrong. She is in tears, her mom is in tears and the doctors were able to pull her aside. We were all done, walking out the door but the doctors all came back and we were all there another hour because we were not your typical I have a lump on your breast go to your doctor type advice show. We gave such concrete information that people were emailing us or writing us letters saying that they found out more information that day then they had gotten from their doctors in the past. We had people on that show who were 25 and 30-year survivors and we had a 22-yearold woman from the military that was having both of her breasts removed. Every story became bigger then life. We focus on real people with real issues. We do segments for men as well, like single fathers who are raising children as a single parent. Women have a lot of support where as men do not. It is probably one of our most popular segments when it comes to men. Y: Speaking of men, how does your husband feel about the show? Y M B: My husband Donald is amazing. He is all hands on. We have 4 am meetings and 50 percent of all ideas are his or he brings that clarity when I am struggling. He is also an amazing cook and the caterer for the show. Y: Who is coming with you to the women’s expo and what should your fans expect to see there? Y M B: They will see us as who we are. The way I produce the show is that I do not put a microphone in their ear. What you see is what you get. The co-hosts who will be there are: Amber B. Love, Ana Vergara, Holli Palazzo Jezlan Moyet, Madison Gray, Stacey V. Lewis, and myself. We cannot wait to meet and talk with every one. Fabric Care

Tips FROM MAD MEN COSTUME DESIGNER JANIE BRYANT (NewsUSA)

J

anie Bryant, the Emmy Award-winning costume designer for AMC TV’s “Mad Men,” knows what it takes to make clothes look great. Not only does she contribute to the visual representation of the entire cast, she brings a 1960s glamour to the period show that makes real people scour vintage shops to look like Joan Holloway and Don Draper. Sure, audiences love the characters and their drama, but the beautifully authentic wardrobe stole the spotlight from the start. In her role, Bryant sketches, designs and fits the costumes for each character, which includes custom-made items and rebuilt vintage gems. “One thing I’ve always been passionate about is how important presentation is to having great style. Looking pressed and polished is often just as important as what you’re actually wearing,” says Bryant, which explains why she released a fabric care guide of useful clothing advice. “The best way to pull off that look is to know how to take great care of your clothing. [The Mad Men] era is all about being wrinkle-free and permanently pressed.” Take a look at some of Bryant’s fabric care advice: * Some fabrics are vulnerable to water spotting -- like acetate, silk and suede -- so be careful when applying perfume or body spray. Delicate garments like these tend to require dry cleaning, or hand-washing, and low-heat settings. * Beware of “pilly” clothing that looks worn out, such as nylon and acrylic. If fabric is susceptible to pills, it’s best to launder, dry and iron at low heat. You may consider laying these items out to dry, especially sweaters. * Although cotton remains the world’s most popular fabric, it is prone to wrinkling. The majority of cotton clothing can be machinewashed, but items with embellishments or accents should be turned inside out or put in a delicates bag. * If wrinkles attack, use a fail-safe. Bryant trusts Downy Wrinkle Releaser so much that she advises you to have a bottle at home, in the office and in any overnight bag. Just spritz clothing, shake and gently pull to release stubborn kinks. “On or off the set, the clothes that I work with and wear always need to look their best,” Bryant says. “Not only does Downy Wrinkle Releaser work well on the vintage fabrics I work with during the day, but all the modern fabrics found in stores today. It’s a musthave for people who need to look neat and pressed and those who need to be out the door in a flash.” For more information, visit www.downywrinklereleaser.com.

ASK

DR. J JANICE UNDERWOOD

In light of the many snow days we had in the Hampton Roads area, I hope you are ready for this edition of Ask Dr. J. I believe that this month’s question, is one that many parents and guardians everywhere struggle to navigate. So, let’s dive in… Maya: Dr. J, sometimes my kids play nicely with one another, but often they are at each other’s throat. I am at my wits end with trying to teach my kids to get along. My children (I have two daughters, one seven and one eight) do not have any problem with behavior at school or with their friends in extra curricular activities, but they just aggravate each other (and me and my husband) seemingly on purpose. Sometimes, they yell at each other over toys, hit each other when they don’t get their way, and just don’t give the other common courtesy. How can I teach them to love and appreciate each other?

Dr. J: Maya, I can’t tell you how much I feel your pain! I want to start by saying that some sibling rivalry is normal. For those of us who have had a brother or sister while growing up usually understand this. For example, I have a younger sister and we now fondly reminisce over so many memories of us arguing and fighting over only God knows what at this point. My husband,

however, is an only child and has no concept of this. I also have two daughters who know how to act in school and in public, but at home argue and fuss at one another for what seems to me to be the most trivial things. It drives my husband and me crazy at times. But more importantly, I often see parents in public with their children, who don’t seem to know how much power they have in shaping their children’s self-concept and behavior. So, my strategy on how to approach this is multifaceted. First, you are your children’s best and first teacher. Children must learn how to treat others, including their siblings, and it is our job as parents to teach them. Whether we like it or not, our kids are watching everything we do. So, our children need to see us appropriately model talking with our spouses, friends, children, and other relatives with respect because they in turn will imitate this. Another great way to provide direct instruction to your girls is by reading age-appropriate books or watching shows/ movies on working as a team, working through conflict, and problem solving. As you read or watch these videos with your children, talk them through what they are seeing or hearing. You can ask them questions about the characters in these resources or have them make predictions on how they would feel if they were in similar circumstances. In fact, just recently, I sat with my daughters and watched an endearing movie about two sisters who didn’t know they were twins. I helped them process the movie and encouraged their questions. Secondly, never compare your daughters with each other or against the others’ accomplishments. This will further deepen a sense of competition for your love and attention. Instead, allow your daughters time and space to pursue their own interests and dreams, which includes separate play dates and birthday parties. I realize that your girls’ ages are so close together that it may be difficult to pursue separate interests, but take small steps. For example, have a

breakfast date alone with one daughter one Saturday morning and have a lunch date with the other on another day. Your husband can take one daughter to a birthday party, while you take the other daughter to a movie. This separate time is so important to allowing your girls time to develop their own identity. Lastly, take time to verbally praise them when you or others see them playing nicely with one another. Also, you might give them a task to complete and suggest they can win a small treat or prize if they accomplish it together. Coach them through a few tasks by providing verbal prompts, suggestions, alternative statements etc. As time goes on, make these tasks increasingly more complex. This may foster a sense of cooperation and mutual trust as opposed to competition or rivalry. So, I would like to close with this final thought…often when kids can’t read or count, they are taught, but when kids misbehave, we often punish them instead of teaching them how to apply appropriate behaviors. So, we must change our mindset on our approaches and how we address behavior with our children, so our children will be equipped to meet our expectations. h Thank you to everyone who submitted a question or comment. If you would like submit a question you can email me directly and confidentially at janicebellunderwood@gmail.com and your question could be featured in an upcoming issue of RENEW Magazine. I can’t wait to hear from you!
