In the 2019 Netflix movie “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind”, young William Kamkwamba of Malawi gets the idea to build a windmill to get water to save his village from reading an engineering book.

The movie so inspired Legacy Middle Art Teacher Gabriel de Zayas that he asked fellow colleague Khumbo Nthara, who is from the African nation and teaches science at Legacy, about children in his home country who might need books.

What evolved was de Zayas’ charging his Latinos in Action community service club to start its Malawi Book Drive.

“I wanted to give more opportunities to students and communities in areas of need like Malawi,” said de Zayas. “Books can do that. The information in books can lead a town to success, health, love and much more.”

For more than two years, the club of 20 students, along with his art students and others at the middle school collected 1,100 books. In May, the first round of 300 books were wrapped and sent via AmeZam Shipping. It took three months for the books to be received at the Blantyre Secondary School. De Zayas is collecting donations to ship the rest of the books by the end of the year.

“We are all brothers and sisters and that is the message the LIA students understood,” said de Zayas. “We are all one family. Our brothers and sisters need help in any way they can get it.”

District Dispatches Melissa Hall, Palmetto Elementary behavior specialist, and the school received surprise blessings of their own in September. Courtesy of Vera Bradley, the school received a redecorated teacher workroom, gifted backpacks for all 775 students and tote bags for its 75 instructional staffers.

Hall serves as the school’s Blessings in a Backpack coordinator. The Orlando chapter supports 4,628 students – including 350 Palmetto students – at 30 programs across Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties.

“We are so proud to have Ms. Hall on our staff. I cannot thank her enough. She gives herself unconditionally to the kids every single day,” said Palmetto Principal Faythia Brown-Carpenter during the $100,000 check presentation.

The new furniture and accessories, as well as a coffee bar, create an inviting space for staff to collaborate. Vera Bradley also supplied new shelving units to help store food for the Blessings in a Backpack recipients.

“This is something I never would have dreamed of for our students,” Hall said. “I am thankful to Blessings in a Backpack and to Vera Bradley for this opportunity.

Thank you for sharing your love with our students and we will definitely pass that love onto them.”

In addition, Vera Bradley donated $5,000 to the Orlando chapter of Blessings in a Backpack in Hall’s honor, for all that she does to ensure the program runs smoothly.

School Recognitions

Over the summer at the Florida Association of School Administrators’ Discover ’21 Conference, Independence Elementary received the John Gardner Award of Excellence (Little Red Schoolhouse Award) from the Florida Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals for its “Kind Hearts, Kind Minds” socialemotional learning program. As the top program, the school also received a $500 reimbursement for expenses to a conference.

Winter Park High was one of 45 high schools nationwide selected as a National School of Excellence by the National PTA. Celebrating the partnerships between the high school and its PTSA, this distinction spans for two years. This is the second consecutive time the school has received this honor.

Fore Our Schools It’s not too late to register for the 2021 SGM Engineering “Fore Our Schools” golf tournament. Occurring Oct. 22 on the Palm and Magnolia courses at the Walt Disney World Resort, the event provides an opportunity for the community to partner with the Foundation for OCPS and fund programs that provide additional support to Orange County students and teachers. Since the first tournament in 1999, it has netted nearly $2.5 million.

Vaccination Funds Don’t miss out on money for getting the COVID-19 vaccination. OCPS employees who are vaccinated

by Oct. 31 are eligible to receive a $200 incentive made possible by Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds established as part of the Education Stabilization Fund in the CARES Act. This incentive is available to all employees, even if you were vaccinated before the incentive was announced.

To confirm your vaccination: 1. Access the MyOCPS portal at https://sapportal. ocps.net/ and log on using your personnel number and password.

2. Select the Employee Self-Service tab.

A PERFECT FIT

Located in a predominantly Hispanic area of East Orlando, Roberto Clemente Middle is the district’s only school named after a person of Hispanic heritage.

Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker was a former professional baseball player from Puerto Rico, and the first Latin American and Caribbean professional baseball star to win a World Series playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960. While the Hall of Famer never lived in Orlando, as a humanitarian, he worked to promote accessibility for Latino Americans and died in 1972 after his plane crashed en route to Nicaragua to deliver relief supplies following an earthquake.

The work to rename the former Stonewall Jackson Middle school was started by a parent and School Advisory Council before Betzabeth Reussow became principal here in 2018. After the School Board charged the SAC with additional action items, in February 2020, students also conducted research and wrote essays on suggested choices. Choices were then narrowed down to the top five most popular names. Another survey with the top three choices was developed for the community input. Roberto Clemente was the requested new name by 70.2% of stakeholders.

“[Clemente] gave back to the community; he was always looking for ways to make it better. He wasn’t just an athlete; he was more than that,” Reussow said.

“And as an IB (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) World School, our mission is to [develop young people who want to] make the world a better place. Through community service, through action, I think it aligns great with our mission … and his mission as well. I think [the name is] a perfect fit.”

With a student population that is 74.5% Hispanic, Clemente Middle serves a diverse student population, with many families coming from some of the 21 Hispanic and Latinx communities and cultures that speak Spanish.

In Angeles Rodriguez Cardona’s Spanish classes, students are learning that even words can have different meanings in the various Spanish-speaking countries.

“They are using the same word but learning, ‘How do you say that in Spain, how do you say that in Venezuela?’”

Her Spanish 1 Honors class students are also presenting projects where they share about their family’s country of origin during National Hispanic Heritage Month.

“I have a lot of students here from different countries.

I want the students to be proud of their own country. I want them to know that they are unique, … to love their country and be proud to be here, too,” said Rodriguez Cardona, whose family hails from Puerto Rico.

“Because they are here, I don’t want them to forget about their own culture.”

In her art classes, Kayla Ferro is teaching her students to respect other cultures and she is also learning more about them through their folk art, crafts and paintings.

“I [am understanding more about] where they are from and also learning how they react, seeing other Latin cultures represented as well,” she said.

For visual inspiration, students, staff and the community need to look no farther than the mural donated by the Azalea Park Little League and created by local artist Neysa Millán Santiago on the side of the school. With images of Clemente playing with his children and helping others, Reussow is happy the students can look up to someone they identify with.

HERITAGE MONTH Celebrations

In addition to celebrations at Roberto Clemente Middle School, below are a sampling of events occurring to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month in our schools.

Eagle Creek Elementary Eagle Creek Elementary started the month Sept. 15 with a spread of snacks representative of Puerto Rico and Latin American countries.

Conway Middle Spanish Teacher Natalia Cortez has shared awareness about the month and Hispanics' contributions to American society to her school community in a short video: https://orangepeal.pub/Cortez.

The school also kicked off the month with an art display on bulletin boards and classroom doors of notable Hispanics (pictured above).

Horizon High Horizon High students have been participating in cultural activities, including Carnival mask making; an Ecuadorian Migajon clay figures workshop; dance tutorials; and learning Mexican Loteria games.

Legacy Middle Legacy Middle hosted a Spirit Week with themes that included Soccer Day; Culture Day; Sombrero Day; Hispanic Figure Day; and Quinceañera Day.

Odyssey Middle Odyssey Middle School will create a wax museum, where staff and students will be dressed as Hispanic celebrities or in a traditional Hispanic costume.

For the third consecutive year, District 2 School Board Member Johanna López invites OCPS staff; students; parents; and community leaders and organizations to celebrate Hispanic heritage, culture and contributions with her.

In a YouTube virtual presentation Oct. 13, at 6 p.m., she will host “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” As in previous years, the program will highlight Hispanic honorees, community members and Central Florida personalities. This year it also will recognize OCPS frontline workers, including instructional and classified staff, especially Operations staff (bus drivers, custodians, Food and Nutrition

Service personnel) for their contributions to their communities.

“This initiative is important to me because it celebrates Hispanic culture and educates the general public on some of the many contributions from a demographic that represents 43% of students in Orange County Public Schools,” Lopez said. “This annual celebration demonstrates how proud we are at OCPS of our diversity.”

Retiree: Maria C. Grable Years with OCPS: 31 OCPS Retirement date: Oct. 31 When Maria Grable started her OCPS career in 1990 as a receptionist in Insurance Benefits, Microsoft was on version 3.0 and Google would not be created for another eight years.

Over three decades, Grable has seen her share of office advancements in her roles assisting district executives at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center.

When she retires at the end of the month, she will have typed her last memo on her Dell laptop as the executive assistant for Associate Superintendent Rob Bixler with Curriculum & Digital Learning. She has worked with him for the last three years; her longest assignment was the 14 years she provided executive assistance in the former Exceptional Student Education/Multilingual Services department.

“I have encountered so many leaders [who] have inspired me to grow in the workplace,” said Grable, who went to Orlando Technical College to get her GED. “In my 31 years at the district office, [there was] James Lawson; John Hanson; Nick Gledich; Anna Diaz; Vickie Cartwright; and Rob

When Grable supported Gledich and the Community Relations team, she also helped find representatives for the Speakers Bureau in the schools and assisted with former employee of the year and retirement events.

“I had never been an executive assistant before,” she recalls she told Gledich. “He said, ‘I’ve never been an executive, either; We will learn together.’”

She fondly remembers how he used to call her MacGyver, “when I had to research and find answers to questions.”

In retirement, the mother and grandmother plans to kick back and spend time with family and friends. No more OCPS research for her.

Support Breast Cancer Research

By Annette Khaled, UCF College of Medicine’s Cancer Research Division This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are closer than ever to finding a breast cancer cure.

Cancer is a daunting enemy – for patients, physicians and scientists. The challenge is that we’ve been treating cancer the same way for decades – largely through radiation and chemotherapies that cause debilitating side effects. We need new therapeutics.

Fighting cancer is like trying to solve a giant jigsaw puzzle; cancer cells are complicated. We’ve learned they need a bank of microscopic parts and processes to multiply and spread.

My lab recently discovered how this bank works and how cancer cells “withdraw” molecules to thrive. A key withdrawal is a complex called a chaperonin (CCT) that helps proteins fold into functional units so cells can move quickly through the body. CCT is especially active in breast cancer cells, and we recently learned it is prevalent in neuroblastoma, a nervous system cancer in infants.

By understanding how this bank works, we can create new therapies to shut it down. Our goal: Destroy the bank and keep the body’s healthy cells unharmed.

Research like this requires support. Our new discovery came thanks to funding from Orlando’s Cure Bowl, the only college football game dedicated to raising money for cancer research. This year’s game is Dec. 17 at Camping World Stadium. The war on cancer takes a team, so we hope you will support cancer research in any way you can. Together we can make cancer a disease of the past.

The research interest of the Khaled lab is developing new cancer treatments, using cutting-edge nanotechnology and understanding the underlying changes that drive metastasis to discover new molecular-targeted agents.

Fall is Here and so is the Flu Shot It’s time to get your annual flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend getting a flu vaccination to protect yourself, your family and your community from the virus. It also can help reduce the burden on our health care systems responding to the pandemic and save medical resources for care of COVID-19 patients.

The OCPS Employee Wellness Program will host flu shot clinics for OCPS employees and your families throughout the district in October and November.

Dates, times and locations* will be posted on the Employee Wellness Intranet page at https:// intranet.ocps.net/departments/risk_management/ insurance_benefits/employee_wellness.

There is no cost for OCPS Cigna members. Please bring your OCPS Cigna ID card and another form of identification (e.g., driver’s license); $28 (cash only) for all others.

Flexible Spending Account Deadline is Here The plan year for our Flexible Spending Accounts is Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. The IRS permits a grace period of two months and 15 days following the end of the plan year (Aug. 31) for the Medical Expense FSA. This grace period ends Nov. 15. You can incur expenses in your Medical Expense FSA for the 2020-21 plan year through that date. You still must submit all claims for reimbursement by Nov. 30.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the IRS permitted an extended grace period for the Dependent Care FSA. This extended grace period ends Dec. 31. You can incur eligible expenses and submit reimbursement requests against the 2020-21 Dependent Care FSA plan through Dec. 31.

She was excited about the news and made alterations to her training since she

was pregnant. Then COVID-19 struck and all races were canceled or postponed.”

While that could have been reason enough to get discouraged, Smith did not give up on her plan to run a full marathon. With a new baby, caring for her family and working full time, Veras noted, “[Smith] would wake up [weekdays] at 4 a.m. to run on her treadmill, and [on] the weekends [she would] run up to 18-20 miles.” This perseverance led to Smith completing her first marathon this past summer in Michigan.

We honor Smith as October’s Healthy Hero.

As she sets her sights on her next marathon, she is truly inspiring to her colleagues and students at Three Points Elementary

and throughout the district.
