FALL FOR SMILES Open Your Mouth: Oral Health Is Health!

Presented by Oral Health America with support from Patterson Dental

WHAT IS FALL FOR SMILES Fall for Smiles is an annual campaign presented by Oral Health America (OHA) and supported by Patterson Dental that educates the public about the positive impact their oral health habits have on overall wellness. Oral health is increasingly recognized as important to overall health. Thought of as a leading health indicator, oral health and healthy mouths are important not only for the prevention of caries, tooth decay and gum disease but also as a factor in mitigating the impact of chronic diseases. Through the campaign efforts, Oral Health America’s goal is to ensure that Americans of all ages understand how they can positively impact their overall health with good oral health habits, including: • Brushing, flossing and rinsing as part of a daily oral health routine • Making regular dental appointments • Choosing healthy foods and drinks for a nutritious diet and healthy mouth • Avoiding use of traditional and new forms of tobacco This year we focus on Open Your Mouth: Oral Health Is Health! As dental professionals, you already know how essential a healthy mouth is to overall wellness. Join Oral Health America, Patterson Dental and other professionals across the country as we promote the importance of healthy habits for a lifetime of healthy smiles!

HOLD A FALL FOR SMILES EVENT Dental Office Candy Drive

Fall is a wonderful time to promote a Post-Halloween Candy Drive, where you can collect sweets in exchange for tooth-friendly treats! Here’s how: 1. In September, download and print our Candy Drive poster from oralhealthamerica.org/fallforsmiles. 2. Place the poster in your reception or waiting area and tell patients about your event. 3. Starting on National Brush Day (November 1) begin accepting Halloween candy in exchange for toys, stickers, toothbrushes and other tooth-friendly treats that your office chooses. 4. If desired, donate collected candy to non-profit veterans' organizations such as Treats for Troops or Operation Gratitude.

Brush-a-Thon

A Brush-a-Thon is a fun way to teach kids in your community the importance of brushing their teeth for a full two minutes, twice a day. Here’s how: Before the Brush-a-Thon: 1. Download our “Guide to Hosting a Brush-a-Thon” from oralhealthamerica. org/fallforsmiles. 2. Choose a location and date to hold your Brush-a-Thon in late September or October. 3. Six weeks (or more) before your event, encourage families to sign up to attend. 4. Set aside enough brushing kits (e.g., toothbrush and toothpaste) for Brush-a-Thon participants to receive and use during the event. At the Brush-a-Thon: 1. Welcome attendees and give a short demonstration on the correct way to brush teeth. 2. Distribute brushing kits to children participating. 3. Set a timer that everyone can see for two minutes and get brushing! 4. Encourage children to make it through the full two minutes. 5. Celebrate!

Are you holding an event? We’d love to know! Post your pictures and stories on social media with #fallforsmiles or email us at info@oha-chi.org. oralhealthamerica.org/fallforsmiles

ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY The Importance of Brushing and Rinsing

This activity demonstrates the importance of brushing your teeth to avoid plaque buildup. What You’ll Need: • Food coloring • Water • Measuring spoons Do the Activity: 1. Mix three or four drops of your choice of food coloring in a few tablespoons of water. 2. Have your child swish it around in their mouth for 10 seconds, then spit it out. 3. Show your child where the food coloring stuck to their teeth, indicating plaque buildup. 4. Have them brush and rinse their teeth and then swish with the colored water again, noting how much less plaque there is after brushing.

Don't Forget to Floss

Show kids the importance of flossing and the most effective way to do it. What You’ll Need: • Disposable rubber glove • Washable finger paint • Paper towel or washcloth • Yarn Do the Activity: 1. As the parent, put a rubber glove on your hand and coat it in paint. 2. Hold your fingers tightly together and, using a wet paper towel or washcloth, wipe the paint off of your hand – this represents brushing your teeth. 3. Show your child all the paint left between your fingers that brushing alone doesn’t reach. 4. Practice “flossing” between your fingers (the “teeth”) with yarn (the “floss”).

An Egg-cellent Experiment

This experiment shows both the importance of brushing your teeth and the damage sugary drinks can do to your mouth. What You’ll Need: • 2 hard-boiled eggs, shell on • Cola soda pop • 2 glasses or cups large enough to hold 1 hard-boiled egg with room • Fluoride toothpaste Do the Activity: 1. Take one hard-boiled egg and place it in a glass filled with cola. 2. Take a second hard-boiled egg and coat it with toothpaste before placing it in a separate glass of cola. 3. After 1 or 2 days, take the eggs out of the cola and note how the shell of the first egg is brown but that the toothpaste protected the second egg from being damaged by the chemicals in the liquid.
