We received 20 percent more votes than in 2016 — the most ever in the history of Readers’ Choice — and we added 15 new categories for voters to weigh in on. Among the top 10 cities found to be attracting millennials, Oklahoma City had the second-lowest unemployment rate at 3.9 percent rate during the study period and the lowest median home price of $219,000, according to realtor.com. In addition, CBS’s MoneyWatch listed Oklahoma City in the top 10 of best U.S. cities for jobseekers in 2016, touting affordability and a healthy job market. According to MoneyWatch, “Oklahoma City, once dominated by the energy industry, has diversified its employment base in recent years. The city of about 1.3 million people has about 20,600 job openings, with a median base salary of $50,000. “While the pay may be lower than in some other cities, Oklahoma City is known for its affordability. Bloomberg ranks it as one of the cities where millennials can afford to buy a home. The median home value is $132,500.” Other surveys paint a similar picture. OKC TOPS NATIONAL LIST FOR BEST PLACES TO START A BUSINESS BY JACK MONEY

klahoma City has claimed distinction for its entrepreneurial environment and support for business startups. A 2017 study released by WalletHub has listed Oklahoma City as the top U.S. metropolitan area for starting a new business. WalletHub is a website that offers its users free credit scores, free credit reports and credit improvement services.

THE SPECIFICS In order to determine the best cities for launching a business, WalletHub’s analysts compared 150 large U.S. cities in three areas: business environment, access to resources and business costs.

Oklahoma City achieved high marks in numerous categories, and Kurt Foreman, the Oklahoma City Chamber’s executive vice president of economic development, said several factors contributed. “We are growing almost twice the national rate — from a population growth perspective — and that’s better than most places in the nation,” he said. Although the price of oil drove down the city’s economy in 2015 and 2016, the indicators suggest the community weathered the downturn well, he said, noting its jobless rate is falling again. “That’s a healthy sign, even with population growth,” Foreman said. “If unemployment stays low, that means there’s probably money in people’s pockets and that would make people want to be here.” Foreman also discussed the city’s talented workforce, the area’s excellent universities and other issues that probably make the city an attractive place to start a business, including geography. ‘EXCITING TIME’ FOR OKC Scott Meacham, president and CEO of the nonprofit i2E Inc., a nonprofit that invests in new innovative and high-growth businesses, isn’t surprised by the ranking. Oklahoma City consistently has been ranked among the best places to start a business for the past four or five years, adding that those designations have come from various companies and organizations, Meacham said. “So, they are like validations of where we are as a city and the progress we’ve made.” The reason for Oklahoma City’s success is an amalgam of advantages it offers, Meacham said. Affordability plays an integral role in offering business owners affordable relatively moderate rental on business space, and lower energy bills and employment costs — especially compared to cities on the East and West Coasts that attracted startups in the past. Oklahoma has entered the arena of high-growth entrepreneurs and high-growth companies, where both the numbers and diversity of startup companies are growing, Meacham told the Oklahoma Venture Forum. “There was a time when we lost our best and brightest to other cities, but things are different now,” Meacham observed, noting Oklahoma City is getting entrepreneurs from other major cities, such as Boston, Seattle and New York. He added that relocating business owners have told him that they were attracted here because they felt embraced and supported by the community. “It is a pretty exciting time to be in Oklahoma City,” Meacham said.
