The new Board is currently working on preparation and planning, and next year the national park will be able to offer different kinds of package tours, excursions, and experiences. The area, which spans 160 km2, was designated as national park due to its characteristic moraine and fjord landscapes. Even on an international scale, Roskilde Fjord is important for birdlife. The fjord is surrounded by tidal meadows and deciduous forests, and the undulating farmland is dotted with beautiful manor houses and quaint villages. Since ancient times, the area has been immensely significant for the kingdom of Denmark. For almost 500 years, Lejre was the seat of the powerful dynasty known as The Schyldings. Later, once the Danish kingdom became Christian, Roskilde was its capital, and the city’s cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is still the towering landmark of the entire area. In the open landscape of the national park you will find burial mounds, village churches, and farms, which, along with the Viking ships on the fjord, testify to the ancient history of the Danes. A Danish national park is a constantly developing landscape. Most of the area is privately owned, although guests and tourists are welcome at the places of interest and on public roads and paths in the natural areas. Look for the signage.
