Welcome Renowned international Wine Writer (and Lutheran!), Tyson Stelzer, sampled more than four dozen Lutheran wines by some of the best winemakers in Australia, before selecting the best of each style for the Lutheran Classic Case 5. Tyson, who is author and publisher of twelve wine books, and a regular contributor to ten wine magazines, says the standard of the Lutheran wine submitted for the Classic Case ‘continues to rise’. There are wines to drink now, and wines to set aside to enjoy in a year or three – if you can hold off that long! Lutheran wine can be a real conversation starter with friends who may not know anything about the Lutheran church. Kalleske Clarry’s Barossa Valley GSM 2012

Impressive depth of blackberry and plum fruit meets the tang of rhubarb and the layered spice of old vine grenache, laced together with finely textured tannins that draw it out long on the finish. Grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre are seamlessly integrated with great mouthfeel. Drink 2013-2015

Dutschke 80 Block St Jakobi Vineyard Merlot 2011

A magnificent Barossa floor merlot, and that’s a line you don’t hear often! The cool 2011 vintage has drawn out merlot’s personality of crunchy redcurrants, juicy mulberries and lifted violets, amid tangy acidity and finely integrated tannins. Drink 2013-2019

Schulz Barossa Valley Johann Zinfandel 2008

Zinfandel has put on its full display here: Christmas cake and plum pudding, fruit mince spice, plum liqueur and raisins. It’s voluptuous, sweetly fruited and softly structured, giving the sensation of throwing yourself onto a plush sofa piled high with velvet cushions. Make yourself comfortable. Drink 2013-2014

Heart of the Vine Clare Valley Shiraz 2006

Clare shiraz brings the wonderfully enticing hallmarks of glossy dark berry fruits touched with lifted eucalypt nuances. Heart of the Vine captures both, softened and smoothed by seven years of maturity into a gentle and calm red wine that’s ready to party right away. Drink 2013-2014

Schild Estate Barossa Shiraz 2010

Schild has bottled the black cherry and black plum fruits that typify the great vintage of 2010 in the Barossa, enlivening it with a refreshing vibrancy of rhubarb and greengage plum tang, and mixed spice and white pepper complexity. Drink 2014-2018

Whistler Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Whister has captured an enticingly minty cabernet from its Heysen Estate in Marananga, with a backdrop of crunchy blackberries and ripe plum fruit. It lingers with considerable fruit persistence, bolstered by the fine tannins and milk chocolate character of twenty months in oak barrels. Drink 2013-2016

Bethany Barossa Semillon 2011

Singing with the vibrant zing of the cool 2011 season, the crunchy, fresh lemon fruit of Bethany is beginning to follow the path of semillon evolution, following the road toward preserved lemon and lanolin. It’s a captivating journey, and will one day reach its ultimate destination of buttery, toasty, honeyed glory. Drink 2013-2019

Kalleske Rosina Barossa Valley Rose 2012

1940s planted grenache delivers all the action of candied red berries, pomegranates and lifted spice. Wild fermentation in old barrels brings endurance and texture to the party, while a touch of shiraz and viognier spice things up with a shake of pepper and a lick of sweetness. Drink 2013

Henschke Tilly’s Vineyard Eden Valley Adelaide Hills 2011 Spanning two regions, there is, of course, no single Tilly’s Vineyard. Reflecting the diversity of its components, this white blend shows all manner of dynamic tropicals, stone fruits, zesty citrus and floral characters, beginning to mature into honeyed, mellow notes. Drink 2013

Henschke Eleanor’s Cottage Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012 A marriage between the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills, the grassy edge of semillon meets the capsicum cut of cool climate sauvignon, fleshed out with notes of tropical fruits, finishing long and crisp with lime zest freshness. A refreshing lunchtime style. Drink 2013-2014

Enjoy top quality (90+ points) fantastic value (less than $20 a bottle) Lutheran wine and support a great Lutheran cause at the same time – the 2013 Longest Lutheran Lunch on Sunday 27 October! Proceeds from sales of the Lutheran Classic Case 5 will support Lutheran congregations to reach out to their local community, and welcome them with warm friendly Lutheran hospitality. Last year more than 100 congregations held a Longest Lutheran Lunch. Some letterboxed their neighbours with free food vouchers. Some created ‘L’ foods, others the ‘Longest’ sausage / lamington / roll. By buying Lutheran wine now, you’ll help Lutherans across Australia show their communities we’re a church where love comes to life … and lunch! The Longest Lutheran Lunch encourages local Lutheran congregations to invite their community, neighbours, family and friends to share a lunch that is l o n g in three ways: • everyone is seated at a single long table • lunch is long and leisurely • congregations range from NZ all the long way to WA Ours is a world challenged by uncertainty, pain and loneliness. As a church we want to welcome people with warmth, friendship and genuine hospitality, so they can taste the welcome and fullness of life Jesus offers us all. That’s what the Longest Lutheran Lunch is all about - just like Lutheran Winemakers - bringing people together!
