Editor’s Letter Issue 6/Winter 2014 “A new Mersey scene is ready to burst out: a scene that mixes local dialect, poetry, music, art and happenings.” This quote adorns a wall in the stunning Museum of Liverpool building situated down on the waterfront and was written by Liverpool author Sean Hignett in the Weekend Telegraph Magazine in 1967. Nearly 50 years later the same can once again be said. The Baltic Triangle is already a hot bed of creative brilliance, packed with inspiring people, places and a burgeoning warehouse party scene. It’s a hub of creativity and innovation; home to new media types, recording studios, and one of the coolest venues in the country - Camp and Furnace (recently ranked #2 in the Times’ 20 Coolest Restaurants in Britain list). Its transformation from a neglected area of the inner city to Merseyside’s answer to London hipster haven Shoreditch has been rapid. It’s why we have moved OPEN HQ to the area, and we’re proud to be part of this emerging Liverpool scene. On to this issue, Russell Brand will be performing in Liverpool on three separate dates this winter as part of his world tour of Messiah Complex. The shows are guaranteed to sell out but we have a pair of tickets for one lucky reader to win (page 50). We spoke to Chuckie, the Dirty Dutch DJ (actually of Surinamese decent [a country with the same size population as Liverpool] who was recently knighted by the president in a ceremony that saw the head of state get on the decks and do some fist pumping!) He tells us about the development of his ‘dirty house’ sound which has got a bit of a scouse following (page 24). We’ve also got a guide to classic Christmas films, some nice and some not so nice that will nevertheless get you in the festive spirit and are all screening at city centre picturehouse FACT throughout December (page 66). We also have our regular recommendations of great places for you to try when out and about in the city from live band karaokes to new places to eat.

THE LIVERPOOL MUSIC SCENE IS TAKING OVER THE SUBURBS By David Crighton

If a mate asked you to join them for a few drinks in ‘Dovey’ on a Thursday night, to get the weekend started early, you’d be forgiven for offering a polite decline! However, when the ‘Dovey’ in question refers to Dovedale Towers on Penny Lane you might want to reconsider. In just under 18 months Dovedale Social band night at Dovedale Towers has developed a reputation for showcasing top talent usually reserved for Liverpool City Centre venues. John Gibbons (co-presenter of the award winning podcast and City Talk show ‘The Anfield Wrap’) is the promoter of the regular Thursday nights and his passion for music drove the project to provide a proper band night in the suburbs. Having developed an impressive list of music

contacts through The Anfield Wrap ‘live sessions’ John was in the ideal position to get Dovedale Social off the ground: “Having been a musician playing in Liverpool for many years and having worked with bands on the podcast there was an opportunity for me to put on a night where I could do things differently to other promoters I’d worked under. I wanted to make a night that bands would want to play at and people want to come to. “The whole thing just got off on the right foot with the Tea Street Band playing the first one and bringing a massive crowd. You have an idea how good something like this can be but you don’t know for sure until it’s up and running.” Dovedale Towers is a venue that is acoustically sound, has an atmosphere that lends itself to live music and, being out of town, it gives bands the opportunity to play to a different crowd. “When you’re in a band you always want to play to new people and the crowds that go to Dovedale go wanting to appreciate something new” Gibbons enthused. The whole ethos of the venue and the night is such that bands are queuing up to play; it’s one night one band so the evening isn’t fragmented by different crowds and better still it’s free to get in. Gibbons explained how having just one band a night has been a key factor in the success: “We wanted to get away from the idea of having slots available and

letting bands put their name down. Each week is built around the band that is playing so we can really push them so that new people might get to check out their music.” The local music scene in Liverpool is thriving at the moment and Dovedale Social is right in amongst it. There are plans to put on extra nights over the festive period so there’s no excuse not to get out for those few drinks in ‘Dovey’ and sample a truly unique band night.

HOW CRE M HELPED SHAPE UK CLUB CULTURE Everybody hates to hear middle-aged washed out ravers go on about the old skool days, when ecstasy was actually ecstasy, every night out lasted for three days straight, and the world was a golden utopia free of money and health worries. Thanks for the nostalgia abuse. But it is a fact that before the 90s, large scale nightclubs playing forms of house music just wasn’t on the radar, until that is, the Second Summer of Love of 1988-89. In that era, acid house music and rave parties rose to prominence — often, such parties were illegal and were spread through word-of-mouth. In the years that followed, these raves moved from illegal locations to fully licensed clubs that took on a life of their own and became hubs of an international scene playing host to Djs from all over the world. One of the clubs that became legendary was Cream at Nation in Wolstenholme Square, L1. One of the original DJs on the scene was London born DJ Seb Fontaine who became its resident DJ and went on to Cream in Ibiza. He hosted a regular dance show on Radio One for a number of years. We spoke to Seb to ask him just how important the whole 90s club scene was and how influential was Cream.

Scan this page to watch the Cream capsule

Seb Fontaine played the Cream capsule at Red Bull Revolutions in Sound at the EDF London Eye, November 14th. You can catch it replayed @RBMA #RevsInSound, and at www. revolutionsinsound.com. 30 revolutionary clubs, one landmark night.

Seb Fontaine: Hippy memories

OPEN: How aware were you after the ‘Second Summer of Love’ that the opening of clubs like Cream would revolutionise how people in the UK spent their weekends? I knew then and still know that we were part of something pretty special. I was 17 during the Acid House inspired “Summer of Love” and remember being in awe of the guys behind the decks. They were not global superstars back then, just bloody good Djs holding thousands of people hostage to their music. But more importantly it was a movement and arguably something like that may never happen again at such a grass roots level. Fast forward ten years (or so) and that movement had not fizzled out but grown stronger and stronger. People worked all week just to get enough money together for another amazing weekend (cue the speech from Trainspotting), people travelled the length and breadth of the country to see Djs and meet up with friends that they had met through clubbing and every town, no matter how small, had a half decent club emulating what was going on in the likes of Cream on a Saturday night.

With first being the most significant to UK club culture, where would you place Cream in the list of 30 revolutionary clubs taking part in Red Bull Revolutions in Sound? For me it was number one, it changed my life. I have friends from the club and in Liverpool that will be my friends forever and I imagine that one day that we will be in our rocking chairs looking at clips on YouTube (or whatever it is then) laughing at some of the glorious outfits and funny faces being pulled on those special nights. Where do you see the pioneering spirit of early 90s UK club culture in the scene today? I see it a lot in the Warehouse party scene and some of the real underground stuff going on and I see some very clever producers coming through. I think kids like Disclosure making fantastic real house music but with their own up to date twist are truly inspirational. Who knows we might even get another Summer of Love in while I’m still Djing :-)

BEHIND THE DECKS: BEN PEARCE The ‘What I Might Do’ hitmaker is house music’s man of the moment By Zoë Yvonne Delaney

Since he dropped his debut full length EP back in October 2012, it’s been non stop for House music’s man of the moment, Ben Pearce. Most will recognise his name from his deephouse debut, ‘What I Might Do’, which has dominated club floors and radio airwaves and there seems to be plenty more where the oddly anthemic track came from.

Your song, ‘What I Might Do’ has been everywhere these past few months How is it hearing your music getting played in places?

Hailing from Manchester, Ben had a variety of influences growing up which may explain his impressive ability to play a wide range of genres. Although relatively new to the scene, high profile support from the likes of Heidi, Jamie Jones and Pete Tong is cementing Ben Pearce’s name as one to watch over the next few years.

I’m so overwhelmed with how much people love it and the reaction to when I play it is still a surprise. It’s great.

Not just content with all this, Ben has also found the time to co-found the record label and agency, Purp & Soul, with Chris Farnworth which is already home to ten young, UK based talents. OPEN caught up with him to chat musical influences, soul destroying sales jobs and pre-set rituals.

“WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER I WAS INTO HEAVY METAL AND BANDS SO A BIT DIFFERENT TO WHAT I PLAY NOW!” Ben Pearce will be playing the Bugged Out Weekender on March 7-9 at Pontins Southport resort. Go to buggedoutweekender.net for more info.

Quite surreal. I’m getting used to it now but the first few times were definitely surreal. I don’t really listen to the radio myself that much but hearing it in shops is kind of weird.

How did you get into DJing? Is it always something you’ve wanted to do? I was a promoter first, growing up I was into bands before I got more into electronic music. I started promoting electro nights then a friend gave me a mixer and a pair of turn tables and I just started to learn and it went from there. I was about 18 when I started and I’ve not really looked back. Any crappy jobs before starting all this? Yes, plenty. I kind of worked in various shops and offices and did sales and lots of soul destroying office work and I was eventually a manager in a bank call centre before I did this. Not tempted to go back at all? Hahaha. Not really if I can avoid it. You’re playing in Liverpool on Saturday (the interview took place just before Ben played Chibuku along side Dusky Klangkarussell and Cyril Hahn) - You looking forward to playing here and how do you prepare for a set?

STARTERS OPEN - Issue 6 / Winter 2014

I’m definitely looking forward to coming over. Last time I played in Liverpool was for Abandon Silence and that was such good fun. I don’t really prepare at all to be honest. I buy new music all the time and I have my favourite songs; I organise the new music on what show I bought the music for but I don’t usually end up playing any of it, I just improvise maybe an hour before and go from there. No rituals at all then? No, there’s no planning at all. I only ever plan podcasts and that and they’re a different listening experience. They have to flow very well and if you’re in a club and it’s not a very serious techno party,

21

which sometimes they are, people just want to hear what they want to hear at the time and have fun. You’re from Manchester. Home of Sankeys and WHP etc. What was your music scene like when growing up as a teenager? When I was a teenager I was into heavy metal and bands so a bit different to what I play now! Bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Bowling for Soup, Taking Back Sunday - I certainly didn’t have a pair of decks as a young teenager like some DJ’s.

It’s great. It’s a lot more work for me but it’s very rewarding. I’m in a position now where I can help give others a chance. We’re a tight crew of artists and we all seek each other’s opinion on new projects and we get along great. It’s cool. Any long term ambitions - any dream places you want to play or any artist you want to work with? Who knows? I’ve only been doing this a year so it’s just about seeing what happens. I let my manager do the planning about the future.

You’ve been involved with Purp & Soul since last Autumn - how is that for you?

Ben Pearce: Breaking through

DIRTY DUTCH

Chuckie on the music that had the biggest impact on his life over the last 20 years By Robbie Muldoon “For some reason, I have a massive online following coming from Liverpool,” says Chuckie. “The last time I did a Dirty Dutch show in Amsterdam, about a thousand people from Liverpool attended. I think that’s amazing!” We can’t imagine that the Amsterdam police share the same views on scousers as the king of the Dirty Dutch movement. But it’s clear that there is a strong Chuckie fan base in Liverpool; so it was only fitting that Cream would celebrate its 21st Birthday by letting him take over the main room in a first for the legendary club.

AGED 16: A REAL HIP-HOP HEAD Back in ‘93 it was the golden era of hiphop. There was so much good music coming out and it inspired me. I was a real hip-hop head. Groups like a Tribe Called Quest, Black Moon, Souls Of Mischief, Onyx and Wu-Tang Clan had a big impact on me. My whole lifestyle and attitude was hip-hop. It also set the blueprint of my approach towards music nowadays.

“First time I heard about it was probably 12 years ago,” he says on discovering the superclub. That’s nine years after it first opened its doors – so what was Chuckie up to until then? Here, the 35-year-old DJ walks OPEN through the evolution of his sets and the birth of a new branch of house music -Dirty Dutch.

My musical selection was very diverse. I would easily play Robin S “Show Me Love” with Chaka Demus & Pliers “Murder She Wrote” in one set. That musical freedom was a blessing to have. It made my dance floor very culturally mixed.

AGED 26: CROSSING OVER Around 2003, I had already won a lot of awards in Holland for ‘Best Urban DJ’ and ‘Best Club DJ’. I produced a lot of crossover tracks back then that set off my local career in Holland really nice. I released a lot of hip-hop records in 2003 and this crossover record called ‘The Partycrasher’ that generated me around 300 gigs a year in Holland only.

AGED 21: CULTURALLY MIXED Back in ‘98 I was a real open format DJ. I realised that there was nothing more fun than connecting people with different backgrounds through music.

AGED 31: KICKING THE DUTCH DOOR OPEN

Chuckie will be performing at Dirty Dutch Back To The Original Core, Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam, February 1st 2014.

2008 is probably one of the most important years in my career. I released this track called ‘Let The Bass Kick’ which got picked up massively during the Winter Music Conference in Miami, after the mash up with LMFAO ‘I’m In Miami Bitch’ flooded the streets. That record definitely kicked all doors open for all typical Dutch sounding records. All eyes were focused on Holland and many famous Dutch DJs came forward from that momentum.

TOASTY AND TRENDY

How to stay stylish when wearing half your wardrobe this winter

By Polly Daszkiewicz

Plaid

Fur

Moving on from the florals of springs past, if you’re going to be seen in a singular print this season, make it plaid. This season, however, we’ve moved up a scale from the punk of plaid past; the print is now found in unexpected luxe fabrics, meaning it can be layered without creating bulk, and dressed up or down. Want to embrace the punk trend whole-heartedly? Layer with lace slip dresses and bulky boots as seen at Saint Laurent.

A fur-m Winter classic, fur is back with a bounce this year. Moving on from the realistic hues on the black/brown spectrum, designers such as Fendi and Lanvin are taking it to extremes with brighter colour combinations sure to stand out in a sea of dull sartorial combinations - we all know black is prevalent in the winter, and this is definitely the season to mix up your winter colour palette.

Mix check print skirt: Topshop £45, Silk plaid shirtdress: MCQ Alexander McQueen £525, Karl Lagerfeld leather trim plaid dress £300

Bag: ASOS £35, Fur & cashmere coat £5290 Fendi @ Matches, Miss Selfridge Faux Fur Cape £35

Skirts

Navy

Okay, so maybe a skirt isn’t your typical winter warmer - if at all - but there’s no denying the presence of the skirt on the A/W ’13 catwalks. Kept feminine and below the knee, this is a sharp swerve away from the trousers of seasons past. A final word of note: maybe keep this one for the days with no snowfall - these skirts are best kept hyper feminine with a humongous heel. Need more catwalk inspiration? Check out Jil Sander and Hermès.

As with every season, fashion has chosen it’s Queen colour. For Autumn/ Winter ’13, it’s definitely time to invest in some navy, as seen on the catwalks of Mui Mui and Céline. We at OPEN feel it’s a refreshing change from the black veil usually cast over our A/W wardrobes, but don’t worry: it’s no longer a fashion faux pas for the two to be combined. Want to take the trend to the next level? Make it pinstriped as seen at Stella McCartney.

MISS FRANCESCA COUTURE OPENS AT METQUARTER Flagship store for acclaimed Liverpool fashion designer

By Francesca Kearns

The number 13... Unlucky for some as the legend goes, and true to its word the year 2013 proved a tough one for both myself and many of the people around me. As with many businesses, a series of highs can be followed with crushing lows and dreams can seem to be all but shattered. But then you never do know what is around the corner... After a shaky start to the year 2013, opportunity knocked on the little door of Miss Francesca Couture, and it was the offer of a lifetime! Since the days of sewing on a single machine in my dads building yard (yes I know you have probably heard that story by now) I always dreamed of having my own boutique in the heart of Liverpool city centre, so you can imagine my excitement when I received a call from the new owners of Metquarter asking would I be interested in joining the centre, as they felt that Miss Francesca Couture had just what they were missing! Fast forward a few months to November 13th (perhaps the number ain’t so bad after all) and over 400 guests came to Metquarter

A fabulous night was had by all, the models where simply stunning with thanks to Illamasqua and Jane Fullerton hairdressing. A complimentary bar from Playground ensured that the champagne was flowing, and the music from Billie Clements had everyone on their feet! For me it was a dream come true...

I’m loving every minute spent in my new shop and couldn’t think of a better way to end the year, and I hope many more to come. I would like to thank my amazing family and friends for their continued support, and of course my loyal customers - the gorgeous girls of Liverpool. No more fittings in the cold building yard now girls. Come see for yourselves!

THE REVOLUTION WILL START IN LIVERPOOL?

Russell Brand’s tour around Che Guevara, Jesus, Malcom X and other such flawed icons – including himself “If a revolution was to start anywhere, it would start in Liverpool.” Acclaimed film director Ken Loach made this remark earlier in the year when discussing the social changes in Britain since the time period of his latest film, The Spirit of ’45. Ken sees a broken, dysfunctional relationship between society, and an exploitative economic system that puts two fingers up to everybody but the wealthiest. Fast forward several months and Russell Brand covers much of the same ground as Loach did, going beard to beard with Newsnight’s Jeremy Paxman in an interview that literally threatened to start a revolution. Accusations of being a trivial man were retorted with the message, ‘we need a spiritual revolution – oneness, togetherness, tolerance, respect and love,’ a quote that now adorns a messiah-like wall mural of Brand on the streets of East London. It’s safe to say Rusty Rockets got the people’s attention. The possible Che Guevara of our times will this winter come to the city earmarked as the headwater of any future revolution on not one, but three dates of his world tour Messiah Complex. Has Russell strategically planned to launch his revolution in the city he is said to be so fond of? Is it going to go off? Who would be behind the nation’s favourite gooser as he cleanses the country of the terminal capitalism eating away at the foundations of our society? We don’t know. So let’s just enjoy the show, laugh and all agree with Brand’s statement, “David Cameron is a man whose face resembles a little painted egg.”

Russell Brand’s Messiah Complex tour will be visiting The Auditorium at Echo Arena Liverpool on 12 December 2013 and the extra-added dates of 15-16th of February 2014.

RUSSELL BRAND’S TOP 10 CONTROVERSIAL MOMENTS Love him or loath him for them, but Russell Brand is never far away from controversial headlines. Here are ten of the comedian’s most Daily Mail-enraging moments.

The retarded cowboy Remember the scene in Borat where the crazy Kazakhstani nearly gets ripped to shreds for singing his countries national anthem to an arena full of rednecks? Well in September 2008 Russell Brand had a similar moment whilst hosting the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. The boy from Essex opened with a memorable monologue calling for the US to elect Barack Obama as next president… the following didn’t get many laughs in that particular room: “Some people, I think they’re called racists, say America is not ready for a black president,” he said. “But I know America to be a forwardthinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retarded cowboy fella be president for eight years. “We were very impressed. We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn’t be trusted with a pair of scissors.” Hoax calling the police The comedian courted more controversy during a stand up show in Northampton in 2008 when he made a hoax call to the local police. During the call, Brand claimed he had spotted a man responsible for a series of assaults. He later apologised and Northamptonshire Police decided not to bring charges. Poking The Jonas Brothers The Jonas Brothers versus Russell Brand was a match up of polar opposites. On one side, a lewd, motor-mouthed sexpot from Blighty; and on the other a massive American band of evangelical Christian, clean cut, no-sex-before-marriage brothers. Brand poked fun at the teen

trio for wearing purity rings that promote chastity until marriage, by dangling a ring on stage at an awards show and claiming to have popped a Jonas Brother cherry backstage. Slating the Olympics “I don’t give a fuck about the Olympics. It’s a boring Blue Peter sport and a waste of taxpayer’s money. At least the Paralympics have some kind of novelty value or something.” Said Russell at a 2011 standup gig – cue much Daily Mail hysteria whipped up about offending Paralympic athletes. Brand simply replies to his critics, “stop being silly.” The ‘Genocide Quips’ Awards The 2013 GQ Men of the Year awards show was held in London, sponsored by Hugo Boss and attended by Tory politicians Boris Johnson and William Hague during a time of international crisis as governments across the world debated taking military action against the Syrian regime in response to the use of chemical weapons in that country. Russell Brand was in attendance – until he was ejected from the building after a sharp and ruthless acceptance speech which called out London Mayor Boris Johnson for making light of the situation in Syria and highlighting the shady history of Hugo Boss who supplied the Nazi regime with their uniforms. There was no mention of Brand in the next issue of GQ, to which the West Ham fanny magnet commented on Twitter, “GQ cleansed me from their issue. That’s what they do when they don’t like something. I guess that’s why they dig the Nazis.” ‘Sachsgate’ Who would have thought that when Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross began

goofing around on Brand’s BBC Radio Two show in 2008, leaving stupid voicemails on the phone of the actor of Manuel from Fawlty Towers, Andrew Sachs, that it would nearly bring down the BBC!? The media furor that followed dominated the news for weeks, some people really lost their shit over this, and their jobs. The hyped up ‘scandal’ was referred to as ‘Sachsgate’ and driven by media outlets such as the Daily Mail who took an opportunity to bash the publicly funded BBC. Brand and Ross have since spoken of their regret over the incident which left messages for Sachs containing Ross blurting out, “he fucked your granddaughter!” And Brand’s creative apology sung down the phone in the form of a freestyle sonnet: “I’d like to show contrition to the max, Andrew Sachs. I said some things I didn’t of oughta, like I had sex with your granddaughter. But it was consensual and she wasn’t menstrual. It was consensual, lovely sex.” Naked protests While covering the May Day Protests in 2001 for MTV, Brand got arrested and charged with criminal damage after stripping off and climbing on top of a police van. Dressing as bin Laden too soon The day after the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, Russell Brand turned up for work at MTV dressed as Osama bin Laden and accompanied by his drug dealer. He was sacked two days later. A costume choice Brand has since acknowledged as a bad one, owing to his heroin abuse at the time.

Too hot for radio The following year Russell was also sacked by radio station XFM for turning it into XXXFM when reading pornographic material on air during a Sunday afternoon show. Beef with Bob Geldof In the run up to the NME Awards in 2006 which Russell Brand was hosting, he had by this time earned himself a reputation in the press for his involvement with the ladies, one of whom happened to be Bob Geldof’s daughter. The Irishman was keen to address this situation as he collected the best DVD award for Live 8 on stage from Brand, beginning his speech to the audience with, “Russell Brand, what a cunt.” A clearly wounded Brand took back to the stage with, “It’s no wonder Bob Geldof knows so much about famine – he’s been dining out on I Don’t Like Mondays for 30 years.”

Russell Brand’s Messiah Complex tour will be visiting The Auditorium at Echo Arena Liverpool on 12 December 2013 and the extra-added dates of 15-16th of February 2014.

NO RESTING IN PEACE

The band labelled ‘the future of indie’ round off busy year doing what they love most By Robbie Muldoon “I don’t think any of us have felt particularly content where we’ve got to, to be honest,” declares drummer Dom Boyce. “We’re certainly not in a position where we are sitting back on anything – we don’t feel we’ve accomplished that much.”

Leeds,” Boyce recalls. “You know it’s amazing going all around the world, but just being in our home country and playing shows there, where for me the audiences are the best and the crowds are the best, that was probably my highlight.”

It’s a little over twelve months ago that Peace released their wellreceived debut EP and emerged from the Birmingham indie-rock abyss to register on the national radar on a wave of adoration. In that time, frontman Harrison Koiser (22), his brother Sam (bass, 23), Douglas Castle (guitar, 22) and Dominic Boyce (drums, 22) have been labelled “the future of indie” by The Guardian, performed the highly significant opening slot of the NME Awards Tour and released their debut album In Love, what more does this young band want?

It’s just as well then that Peace should see out 2013 with another UK tour and will play in Liverpool at the East Village Arts club in December before preparing to release their second album that Dom tells us will be coming early next year.

“It’s not a question of greed and wanting more, but you’re always ambitious to move forward,” says Boyce, composing himself. So what would be the ultimate goal? “I guess it would be to play a big show or headline Glastonbury. It would be really nice to release either the next record or the record after and to be like, this is Peace’s best work and still be creating new fans instead of settling for what we have now, that’s the ultimate goal for me.” 2013 was billed as ‘their time’, a break through year for a band which had created a lot of buzz before an album had even been released, so what were the highlights? “Playing Glastonbury is definitely up there along with Reading and

Peace are one of a number of bands to recently come from the hive of Birmingham’s indie scene. What’s making the now dubbed ‘B-Town’ city so hot? “I think there is probably good music coming out of loads of places in the country, it’s just that for whatever reason the media attention is on Birmingham at the moment.” Maybe it’s just like in Liverpool, for many people the only way out of the big city is by playing football or being in a band? “Yeah, that’s true,” he enthuses. “The Midlands has got a great heritage of rock n’ roll music, there’s great history with Black Sabbath, a really good classic rock heritage so I guess that’s somewhere embodied in people. It’s in the water in the Midlands somehow.” As a band that takes its name from a notion of civil calm and free love you expect to hear tropical breezy melodic songs that you can sing along too, and California Daze is

“WE’RE CERTAINLY NOT IN A POSITION WHERE WE ARE SITTING BACK ON ANYTHING – WE DON’T FEEL WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED THAT MUCH.” one such song that nails it with a chorus that contains a beautifully harmonious and philosophical lyric “are we born to live or born to die?” It’s a chance to go all deep on Dom and ask him, what is the answer? “Ah, I really find that hard to answer! That song is very much to do with escapism and almost dreaming of another world or another place and I guess along with that theme it’s sort of questioning just basic foundations of your current life, I guess.” “I didn’t write the lyrics. It’s probably a load of nonsense and Harry will probably hate me saying that.” I guess that’s why lead singers usually do interviews.

WHAT DO PEACE THINK OF RUSSELL BRAND’S REVOLUTION? As a band named after the notion of civil calm and free love we thought it would be interesting to ask Dom from Peace about Russell Brand’s idea of a revolution… are they down with it? DOM: Nooo not really, I’m not a fan of that whole thing to be honest. I think that’s a man who is very articulate and is a celebrity and is using those two things to somehow create some kind of message that if you break it down doesn’t make any sense. If you were to word it in your average Bob and Joes terms it doesn’t make any sense. I’ll eat my words if this time in a year good has come from it - but for now I think it’s a load of nonsense. Do you think he may have just succeeded in starting a dialogue though? Basically, yeah. It’s just a viral video at the end of the day isn’t it? It could have been about him slagging off another celebrity and it would have had the same effect. I might be wrong and if I ever met him I’d apologise. But for now I’m not really buying into anything. However that’s not to suggest that he doesn’t raise issues that need to be dealt with, but his answers to those problems don’t make any sense. We only ask because he’s in Liverpool next month too... Oh, is he? Yeah… Is he really? Yeah, it’s not the same day, it’s the same week in Liverpool. Ahhhh. Oh, ok.

Peace perform at East Village Arts Club, Liverpool, December 3rd with support from Drenge.

BALTIC FLEET

Riding on the thrust of a GIT Award Since winning the GIT Award 2013, things have moved rapidly for Baltic Fleet, the alter ego of Paul Fleming, one time keyboardist with Echo and the Bunnymen. Lots of media attention including interviews with NME and The Guardian, plus tracks from newest album Towers getting played by the BBC on some of their biggest shows and documentaries have all followed the decision to enter Get Into This blogger Peter Guy’s annual search for the best new music on Merseyside. Then scouse royalty Yoko Ono invited the GIT Award winners to play two sets at her Meltdown Festival, giving Baltic Fleet a chance to play on a different platform and to new audiences. Their small, loyal Liverpool fan base grew

as they were invited to play gigs in London, Newcastle and the Midlands. Fleming tells us: “Since winning the GIT Award, things have gone really well. All of the support, well wishes and airplay has been overwhelming really. When it comes to the future I really want to sit down and put down some new material now though. We’ve been concentrating on the live show since Macky and Mark McKenny (guitar) joined me in March, but my real passion is the creative process and I’m happiest when I’m in my home studio making sounds and tracks.” At a recent performance at the Kazimier in support of Mercury Prize nominees Portico Quartet, the onstage energy of a Fleming live show was truly inspiring, switching at super-

speed between his faithful Apple Mac, keyboards, cymbals and synths, as part of a four-piece, although it is evident throughout that it is very much Fleming’s show.

How to enter the 2014 GIT Award: Artists can enter the GIT Award by sending four tracks to getintothis@gmail.com or alternatively post to Peter Guy, The GIT Award, Liverpool Post & ECHO, PO Box 48, Old Hall Street, Liverpool, L69 3EB. BONEFACE

The Liverpool artist hand picked by Queens of the Stone Age By now the secret is out, Liverpool is going through a creative arts resurgence. The rest of the world is casting its eye on this famous city for inspiration, which has always been a vital, greasy cog in the mechanisms of western culture. The story of the enigmatic illustrator Boneface’s plucking from obscurity by international rock royalty Queens of the Stone Age to produce all the artwork surrounding their last album release is testament to this. “I continually regress to draw inspiration from trinkets of my childhood, and try to find ways to reanimate them, but with a peculiar twist.” With Bonface this often means themes of video games , B-movie horror, and depicting everybody’s favourite superheroes taking serious hidings. He explains the reasoning behind this artistic brutality. “With big budget film adaptations of comic book canon, epic moments tend to dominate the limelight while the little twinkles of familiarity are shepherded away into the subtext. I wanted to make something iconic that emphasised the nicks and scrapes that we can all feel. Find me a person that can’t share in the experience of a bloodied nose.”

LLA AGONY AUNT I think I may have been mis-sold a mortgage, can you explain how I would know this please:Between 31 Oct 2004 and 31 Oct 2009 You may have a mis-sold mortgage if it extends beyond your retirement, it is interest only or your Broker asked you to self certify your income even if you were working on a PAYE basis. These are the most common examples. Please get in touch for more examples.

I have been employed in my current role for 12 months and the firm has now taken on part time Christmas staff and it feels like they are now pushing me out the door as they are only giving me 4 hours per week. Do I have any rights? We would refer you to your contract of employment and whether you are contracted to work a minimum of hours per week. If for example, your contractual hours are 30 hours per week then potentially your employer is committing a breach of contract if you are working only 4 hours per week. We would advise you to lodge a formal grievance if you do have an issue at work to have the matter resolved internally.

I have been caught claiming incapacity benefits illegally; will I now also loose my Job Seekers Allowance? The fact that a claimant is disallowed a benefit retrospectively for failing to disclose a change in circumstances would not affect present benefit if that claim is legitimate i.e. all facts are correct for the current claim

I have heard about the option of mediation in divorce and family matters. What is this?

Mediation is a voluntary process to help couples who have decided to separate or divorce to discuss options and explore suggestions in order that plans can be made for the future, either in terms of the arrangements for the children, finances or both. It is an alternative to Court to try and resolve disputes and can also be extended to other family members. Mediation can reduce tension and hostility. It focuses on achieving positive outcomes that are fair for all concerned. It can also help to resolve issues for all concerned and help resolve issues quicker than other options.

I was pulled over by the Police, breathalysed and failed. Will I loose my license? If you are pulled over by the police test positive at the roadside and then provide a reading above the legal limit at the police station you will face a minimum 12 month ban, this is fixed by statute. The length of the ban is determined by the amount of alcohol in your system, the higher the alcohol content the longer the ban. If it is your second offence within 10 years the minimum ban is 36 months. It is vitally important that you have expert representation in these matters.

Ok, not quite – but it beats being in your living room playing Guitar Hero in your undies and every other karaoke out there! Rockaoke is cool, Camp and Furnace is cool, put the two together and you get a perfect setting for anybody who wants to do a Jagger off but has a voice that sounds like a strangled cat. OPEN WIDE

Almost Famous got these cheeseburgers maaan! If there is one type of dish that people want to hear described as ‘dirty’, ‘greasy’ and ‘oozing with fat’… it’s a burger. After starting life as a secret pop-up in Manchester, Almost Famous opened its first restaurant in Liverpool in the summer, just opposite Santa Chupitos on Parr Street. It didn’t take long for the new joint to start making headlines – literally – after one diner dislocated her jaw tackling a triple-decker burger on a work night out. Ouch! But also very enticing. One grizzly grey Friday afternoon OPEN went along to treat our taste buds to a burger and some booze. The vibe and buzz about the place on entrance had that real start to the weekend feel, the service was with a smile, and the famous food lived up to the hype. Like pigs in the proverbial we tucked into a table covered in a selection of ‘suicide fries’, ‘true romance

fries’, and dirty, greasy, oozing ‘John Belushi’ and ‘River Phoenix’ burgers. The John Belushi* was made of a big juicy double-stacked steak burger with jack cheese, rump steak, tomato, onions, peppercorn, horseradish, and mustard mmm… ayo. Sitting on a stomach full of John Belushi burger and suicide fries, casually reading aloud Charlie Sheen’s ‘winning’ breakdown transcript which is stencilled on to the walls, you realise there is no place else like it in town. OPEN highly recommends this place, and here is what you can expect to find on a jaw-breaking burger.

BOOZY SHAKE Grandpa’s pocket. Werthers Original goodness. An alcoholic milkshake with a brandy base complete with a topping of candy floss and a wrapped Werther’s Original sweet sitting on top of all that sweet goodness.

WHAT’S ON IT Big juicy steak burger x2, jack cheese, rump steak tomato, onions, peppercorn, horseradish, mustard mayo

*The John Belushi burger and boozy shake was a special which varies from week to week and not always available.
