Apprenticeships offer the best of both worlds - the chance to learn and earn at the same time. They are also one of the best ways to build a career in construction. By combining a job in construction with time at college, an apprentice can learn all the skills needed to build a long and successful career whilst earning a wage. Popular apprenticeships include brickwork, building services, carpentry & joinery, construction management, civil engineering, electrical, painting & decorating, plastering, plumbing, surveying and wall & floor tiling but there are 23 to choose from at Leeds College of Building. An apprenticeship will also provide some of the most exciting opportunities for the future with the chance to go on and gain further qualifications. The North East has an incredible background of industry and engineering, as coal and salt deposits in the area have heavily influenced growth throughout the region. Nowadays you’re more likely to be making chemical products than mining coal, but manufacturing in one form or another is still the number one sector in the North East! Manufacturing’s popularity is closely followed by health and social care, but this is no surprise when you consider that the biggest public sector employer in the region is the NHS with over 76,000 employees. Northumberland has the highest average disposable household income (cash to spend!) in the region, and Tyneside is the biggest contributor to the region’s economy, with 38% of all goods and services in the North East coming from there.

Newcastle is a great place to consider if you’re thinking about studying at university. Newcastle University ranks in the top 200 higher education bodies worldwide, and in the top 20 in the UK. It’s also one of the largest universities for research, so there are some great opportunities available after you graduate! Newcastle Brown Ale was created in the city, and is the most imported alcoholic drink in America! Newcastle is also a leader in engineering, especially when it comes to bridges! The High Level Bridge was the first to combine road and rail transport, the Swing Bridge pioneered the use of hydroelectric power, and the Millennium Bridge was the world’s first tilting bridge!
The North East is unique in that it is the only region of the UK that exports more than it imports! This is largely because of the fantastic products produced here. It’s also interesting to note that more of the exports go to countries outside the EU than inside it, meaning you can find products from the North East all around the world!

Liverpool was voted the European City of Culture in 2008, which just goes to show how seriously the city takes its cultural heritage. There are loads of opportunities to work in tourism, as the city attracts visitors the world over to sites such as Strawberry Field, and Penny Lane (Beatles heritage sites!). The music doesn’t stop there though; Liverpool was awarded the title of ‘Capital of Pop’ from the Guinness Book of Records for having more number one artists than any other city. Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery is also the national gallery of the north, and is home to one of the best art collections in Europe.
YORKSHIRE & THE HUMBER
Yorkshire has been voted as one of the world’s number one places to visit by travel guide Lonely Planet, and is home to some of the UK’s best tourist locations. There’s even Yorkshire Day, which is celebrated on the 1st of August every year, but (unfairly) that’s not an excuse to take a day off school. The south and west of the region are more urban, with big cities such as Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield being big powerhouses of industry. It’s partly because of this that the region is responsible for

producing 7% of the goods and services in the UK, which is worth about £90 billion a year! And nearly half of that is generated solely in West Yorkshire! 15% of the region’s economy comes from manufacturing, which is 4% more than the UK average. It’s worth looking out for engineering jobs in the Humberside region at the minute, as Siemens have announced they will be building a huge wind turbine power plant on the banks of the Humber to be ready by 2016!
LEEDS
Leeds is the city with the third highest population in the UK, after London and Birmingham. Despite this, Leeds is still one of the fastest growing cities in the entire country. Leeds is one of the biggest student cities in the country, with over 250,000 students, so is a fantastic place to study if you like a bustling environment! The city is a great choice for those considering a career in the finance and law sector, as Leeds is the largest legal centre in the UK, and is home to over 30 national and international banks. If working in a bank isn’t your thing, how about a call centre? Over 30 centres around the city provide financial services at the touch of a button!

NORTH WEST
The North West is the third most populated region of the UK, after London and the South East, that’s 13% of the UK (over 7.1 million people!). This region is home to some of the country’s biggest and most influential cities, including Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool. The region has traditionally been very focused on engineering and industry, with loads of technical innovations happening throughout the region, from the invention of the Geiger counter, to the first import of bananas! It’s also worth noting that the North West contributes the most in the country to the manufacturing industry’s goods and services.
While in the past there has been a history of high unemployment in the region, there is much evidence to show that this is becoming less of a problem. The percentage of unemployed persons is much lower than it was at its high point in 2011. Tourism is a BIG deal in the North West, with Manchester being the most visited English city outside of London, and Liverpool making this year’s Trip Advisor top 10 UK tourism destinations; in fact the most popular free attraction in the region is the Merseyside Maritime Museum!

If you’re confused about what to do with yourself after school or college, then don’t worry! Your next step is to speak to a careers advisor, or even just a teacher or your parents. They might be able to open you up to other options that you hadn’t considered before, or didn’t even know existed! Careers advisors will also be able to point you towards all the relevant material you need in order to make an informed decision. After all, the best thing you can do is to arm yourself with knowledge and get all the information you can together from as many sources as possible. Rosalind is described by her tutors as a model student who is committed and dedicated to fulfilling her dreams. This was demonstrated during her work experience with TJB decorators, who were so impressed with her that they have now taken her on as an apprentice.
Many of our students opt to do a full-time course so they can develop the skills that employers are looking for. After a year they then feel confident about applying for an Apprenticeship. We also work with a number of employers who recruit our full-time students for permanent positions and Apprenticeships.
When asked about her time at LCB, Rosalind said “I have always been interested in painting. I couldn’t have stayed on to do my A Levels, it just wasn’t for me. My friends did wonder why I chose construction, but I know I have made the right choice. I’m so

Christine Arrojo, Professional Cookery Christine Arrojo chose Newcastle College as she wanted to study a course that allowed her to be creative, but one that would also give her the skills and experience to get a job. Christine trained in the college’s Lifestyle Academy and was given the opportunity to undertake work placements in some of the region’s top restaurants, including Café 21, Jesmond Dene House and Hotel Du Vin. She credits the facilities at the college for helping her to develop the award winning skills that enabed her to achieve gold in the regional NECTA Awards for three years in a row; and
make contacts that helped her to secure her dream job as a chef. “As part of the Professional Cookery course, I had the pleasure of working in some of the region’s top restaurants. These placements meant I was able to learn from top chefs. It opened my eyes to what it is like to work in the real world. “Thanks to the course, I am now employed as a commis chef at Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse in Newcastle city centre.”

Creative Talents on Show at Longley Park Creative students at Longley Park Sixth Form College were showing off their outstanding creations in a week long exhibition at the college. Hundreds of visitors attended the fantastic show where students from 3D Design, Art and Design, English, Graphics, Media, Photography and Textiles showcased their work. The show also included some amazing dance, performing arts and music performances from students. The event also featured the first showing of the fantastic documentary Food banks: Britain’s Hungriest, produced by Media students. The hard-hitting documentary about food poverty in Sheffield included interviews with MPs and charities, plus the real life stories of people who have had to turn to food banks in Sheffield to survive.

Longley Park Sixth Form College is the only college in the area to be an approved centre for the University of Arts London Awarding Body Level 3 Extended Diploma and Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design. Holly Stafford Holly Stafford completed her studies on the level 3 Diploma in Aviation Operations in 2013 and was employed by BA. For this I am very grateful, and I owe it all to Craven College’s Aviation Academy for getting me to where I am today.

Higher Apprenticeships in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Level 4 There are lots of reasons to be part of Kirklees College. In 2012-13, 97.2% of Kirklees College’s 16-19 year old students passed their course. This placed the college at the top of the table for pass rates in England compared to other large FE colleges (over 4,500 students). This is due to the exceptional level of support the students receive and the close monitoring of students’ progress throughout the year.

SETA have always offered a wellrecognised and varied range of training and qualifications for young people starting their engineering careers. The Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering aims to offer employers an additional option to the recruitment of graduates with no work experience, and presents students with an alternative to undertaking a degree post completion of AS or A levels. SETA offers a number of pathways for employers, which include Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic, Maintenance, and Rail Engineering. Catherine Bainbridge could be described as somewhat of a rising star On completion of her level 3 Diploma in Professional Bakery at Leeds City College, she has gone straight into employment with the UK’s largest bakery brand – Warburtons.
With over 350 careers in the NHS, what would you be? At Health Education North East we are responsible for supporting the delivery of excellent education and training to the existing and future NHS workforce. It is our mission to make sure we have the right number of people, with the right skills, at the right time to deliver excellent patient care. We are doubling the number of Apprenticeship career pathways, which include programme opportunities at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels in areas such as: • • • • • •

David Carr is currently on secondment as an apprentice with Health Education North East from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. David will be able to enhance his corporate skills and broaden his experience and technical know-how in the area of his chosen career pathway, information and technology. ‘Earning while you learn is the best thing about undertaking an Apprenticeship. I think I have gained valued experience of working in a real employment environment, whilst learning new skills from experienced members of staff. Balancing work with study can be challenging, however my employer has always been supportive in allowing me time to complete the academic side of things. Catherine, 21, initially took the academic route, studying AS levels, before changing to vocational studies, gaining a level 2 Professional Chefs Diploma. She came to Leeds City College after deciding on a career change, focussing on bakery and food manufacture to fulfil an interest in the food science elements of the industry.
after two interview stages, was delighted to be offered the job on completion of her studies. The college then worked with her so she could complete practical assessments and theory-based assignments on a fast-track basis to enable her to start on the arranged date. “From principally starting out with an unsure career plan, I am now working at the UK’s largest bakery brand.” Catherine travels the country visiting Warburtons bakeries to continue developing her skills in large scale bakery manufacture.
At college Catherine has had ample opportunity to enhance her skills with industrial experience, including an allexpenses paid trip to France, with work experience in a traditional bakery as part of a competition prize. She was also among students chosen to meet The Duke of York when HRH visited the college this year during National Apprenticeship Week and gave him a demonstration of her bread-making skills. Catherine was encouraged to apply for a trainee test baker position at Warburtons, and

I’VE HEARD ABOUT TRAINEESHIPS, BUT WHAT ARE THEY? ARE THEY RELEVANT TO ME?
I WANT TO DROP OUT OF COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY AND TRY AN APPRENTICESHIP INSTEAD – IS THAT A GOOD IDEA?
Traineeships are short courses that have been created for young people who lack qualifications and experience of the workplace, and who want to get an edge over the competition when applying for an Apprenticeship or job. Lots of places call their Traineeships ‘Pre-Apprenticeship’ courses.
Many people feel pressured into going to college or starting university, but this isn’t necessarily the right thing for everyone. In the same way, you might have dreamed about going to university, but then found that it’s not actually what you expected, or that you are struggling with the workload.
If you’re 16-18 without a level 3 qualification, or 19-24 without a level 2, and you have little to no work experience, a Traineeship could give you that boost you need. They’ll last 6 weeks to 5 months and will cost you absolutely nothing. You won’t get a qualification at the end (unless you lack core English or Maths qualifications), but will gain some vital experience that will look great on your Apprenticeship or job application form.
Apprenticeships are a great alternative to learning in an academic environment purely because you still gain qualifications, but its practical learning, and you don’t necessarily have to sit in a classroom all day. They’re obviously still hard work, but some people much prefer this style of learning.
Confusingly, some companies call their Apprenticeship schemes Traineeships, so make sure you check before you apply for a role that you actually qualify for it!
WHAT A LEVELS SHOULD I BE STUDYING SO I CAN GET A UNIVERSITY PLACE?
If you are thinking about dropping out, the first thing you should bear in mind is that it is a BIG decision. You are effectively giving up weeks, months or years of work. That being said, if you are sure that college/ uni really isn’t for you then it might not be worth sticking to a career path that could potentially jeopardize your career because you aren’t performing to your maximum potential.
