Aung San Suu Kyi:

Editorial

Myanmar democracy icon, an exemplification of the power of the powerless! ruthless army generals who ruled Myanmar for decades. She admired Mahatma Gandhi’s use of nonviolence. She was also inspired by Buddhism. Aung San Suu Kyi worked for democracy and helped make the National League for Democracy on September 27th 1988.

M

yanmar has been on the boil since February 1 2021, when the army arrested Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of the National League for Democracy and took over the reins of government. The international community condemned the coup and asked for immediate restoration of democracy. So far the army has refused to relent and continues to keep a tight grip on the country. Suu Kyi is seen as the beacon for human rights - a principled activist who gave up her freedom to challenge the

Because Suu Kyi was fighting against the government, she was asked to leave the country, but she did not. She organised rallies and travelled around the country, calling for peaceful democratic reform and free elections. Suu Kyi, whose prodemocracy efforts won her the Nobel Peace Prize, and her allies have played important roles in the past, even when sidelined or jailed by the generals. The 76-yearold was convicted on charges of incitement and violating coronavirus restrictions and

sentenced to four years in prison, though that was almost immediately reduced to two. She faces other charges that could see her imprisoned for life. But the younger generation may be better placed to carry the mantle anyway. Unlike their elders, younger people in Myanmar, especially those in the cities, have spent most of their lives without having to worry about being imprisoned for speaking their minds. They have had access to mobile phones and Facebook and grew up believing the country was moving toward greater, not less democracy. More power to Aung San Suu Kyi and her efforts towards the establishment of democracy in Myanmar.

Holi: Let’s Celebrate the Festival of Colors! By | Swapnil Shukla

T

he festival of Holi signifies the victory of good. It marks the arrival of spring and the end of winter. It also celebrates the beginning of a good spring harvest season. The Holi celebrations start on the evening of Purnima. It falls in the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna. In addition to India and Nepal, the festival is celebrated by Indian subcontinent diaspora in countries such as Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In recent years, the festival has spread to parts of Europe and North America as a spring celebration of love, frolic, and colours.

Holi is particularly enjoyed by worshippers of the god Krishna. Its general frivolity is considered to be in imitation of Krishna’s play with the gopis (wives and daughters of cowherds). In Vraja (modern Gokul), rituals of reversal culminate in a battle in which the women of the natal village of Radha, Krishna’s eternally devoted lover, pummel the men of Krishna’s village with staves; the men defend themselves with shields. In the Dolayatra (“Swing Festival”), images of the gods are placed on decorated platforms and are swung to the accompaniment of cycles of songs sung only in the spring season. In many locales, celebrants kindle an early morning bonfire that represents the burning of the demoness Holika (or Holi), who was enlisted by her brother, Hiranyakashipu, in his attempt to kill his son

Prahlada because of the latter’s unshakable devotion to Vishnu. The burning of Holika prompts worshippers to remember how Vishnu (in the form of a lion-man, Narasimha) attacked and killed Hiranyakashipu, vindicating both Prahlada and Vishnu. Days before the festival, people start gathering wood and combustible materials for the bonfire in parks, community centers, near temples and other open spaces. On top of the pyre is an effigy to signify Holika who tricked Prahalad into the fire. Inside homes, people stock up on pigments, food, party drinks and festive seasonal foods such as gujiya, mathri, malpuas and other regional delicacies. On the eve of Holi, typically at or after sunset, the pyre is

lit, signifying Holika Dahan. The ritual symbolises the victory of good over evil. People gather around the fire to sing and dance. In North and Western India, Holi frolic and celebrations begin the morning after the Holika bonfire. Children and young people form groups armed with dry colours, coloured solution and water guns (pichkaris), water balloons filled with coloured water, and other creative means to colour their targets. Traditionally, washable natural plant-derived colours such as turmeric, neem, dhak, and kumkum were used, but water-based commercial pigments are increasingly used nowadays.

All colours are used. Everyone in open areas such as, streets and parks is game, but inside homes or at doorways only dry powder is used to smear each other’s face. People throw colours and get their targets completely coloured up. It is like a water fight, but with coloured water. People take delight in spraying coloured water on each other. By late morning, everyone looks like a canvas of colours. This is why Holi is given the name “Festival of Colours”.

Mathura, in north India, the festivities may last more than a week. The rituals go beyond playing with colours, and include a day where men go around with shields and women have the right to playfully beat them on their shields with sticks. It is known as Latthmaar Holi, traditionally celebrated in the Barsana village. Barsana is the village of Radha and women assume the role of gopikas (Radha’s friends) and men as gopas (Krishna’s friends).

Groups sing and dance, some playing drums and dholak. After each stop of fun and play with colours, people offer gujiya, mathri, malpuas and other traditional delicacies. Cold drinks, including drinks m a d e w i t h marijuana, are also part of the Holi festivity.

In southern India, some worship and make offerings to Kamadeva, the god of love in Indian mythology.

In the B r a j region around On the Dot, March 2022

After a day of play with colours, people clean up, wash and bathe, sober up and dress up in the evening and greet friends and relatives by visiting them and exchanging sweets. Holi is also a festival of forgiveness and new starts, which ritually aims to generate harmony in society. Many cities in Uttar Pradesh also organise Kavi Sammelan in the evening.

In Hindu culture, this is a solemn festival that marks the remembrance of ‘overcoming darkness and ignorance in life’. Different legends, throughout history, describe the significance of Maha Shivratri and according to one of them, it is on this night that Lord Shiva performs his cosmic dance of ‘creation, preservation and destruction’. Another legend dictates that on this night, offerings of Lord Shiva’s icons Powered by: BANDHU

arrow at the bow to kill him, some bilvapatra broke and fell on the shivling. In this way, the worship of the first Prahar was also done unknowingly. The also deer disappeared into the wild bushes.

Maha Shivratri Vrat Katha:

There was a king named Sundarsen. Once he went hunting in the forest with his dogs. When he did not find any animal after toiling all day long while suffering from hunger and thirst he climbed on a tree that was there besides a pond to retire for the night.

Under the bael tree, there was the Shivling which was covered with bilvapatras. Meanwhile, in the process of breaking some twigs, a few of them coincidentally fell on the Shivling. This way the hunter accidentally fasted also and by chance he even offered bilvapatra to the shivling. After a few hours passed at the night, a deer came there. When the hunter shot an

Shortly after that, another deer emerged. The hunter, seeing him, again mounted an arrow on his bow. This time also in the second half of the night, the leaves and water of Bilvapatra fell on the Shivling and the Shivling was worshipped. The deer escaped.

After this, a deer of the same family came there, this time

also the same thing happened and the Shivling was worshipped in the third hour. That deer also escaped.

Now, for the fourth time, the deer with his flock came to drink water there. The hunter was very happy to see everyone together and when he again put an arrow on his bow, some of the Bilvapatra fell on the Shivling which led to the worship of Shivling again in the fourth stroke.

In this way, the hunter remained hungry and thirsty throughout the day and kept awake throughout the night, and all four of them inadvertently worshipped Shiva, thus completing the fast of Shivratri.

Later, when he died, the messengers of Yamraj tied him in the loop and took him to Yamlok, where Shivaji’s Ganas fought with Yamdoot and freed him from the loop. In this way, Nishad joined the beloved ganas of Lord Shiva. Powered by: BANDHU

Silk and cotton textile production has emerged as a major generator of employment in India. Silk sarees, dresses, and scarves have a special place in weddings and other ceremonial occasions in almost all communities. Prized throughout history for their quality and diversity, silk products have been gaining market interest across the world.

Creating sustainable ‘farm to fabric’ ecosystem for silk weavers in India

start-up, by Kunal Vaid, has created a range of machines for the silk industry. With their highly efficient spinning and reeling machines for silk yarn production, being primarily powered by solar energy, they hope to empower women in the wild silk industry in India. After completing his MBA from Management Development Institute, Gurugram, Kunal Vaid decided to join his family business Needlepointe Textile Products Pvt. Ltd. in Delhi.

On the Dot ‘Inspirational’ Kunal worked with Needlepointe, which had partnered with the Jharkhand Government to market the world’s first organic certified silk products from the state, for nearly a decade. In 2015, Kunal established Resham Sutra in Delhi to enable India’s rural entrepreneurs to profitably produce and market a variety of silk and handloom products and a wide range of affordable electric reeling, weaving, and spinning machines. Resham Sutra, which translates to “silk thread,” situated in New Delhi, manufactures and distributes solar-powered silk spinning machines to rural women in Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and other Northeastern states aimed at replacing labor-intensive silk yarn production methods with reeling machines to eliminate hard labor and double a reeler’s productivity and income. While sharing his entrepreneurial journey, Kunal says, “In order to improve the livelihoods of the workers, a key factor required

to sustain improvements in productivity is the complimentary service.” “We need to provide more than a technology to the customers”, he adds. Therefore, going forward too, the company also intends to place an equivalent emphasis on the provision of business support (accounting, basic marketing, etc.) to the workers to create a sustainable ‘farm to fabric’ ecosystem for them and plans to reach 10,000 weavers in the next 2 years for the same. Further, the company plans to expand to west and southern states and certain northern states as well in the coming years. On the support from the government for this sector, Kunal highlights that there are incentives in the form of subsidy for looms and machinery, skill up-gradation training and marketing platforms for handloom organisations and weavers to sell the products to the consumers. He does note that despite these initiatives, a key barrier in accessing the financial support from government is the delay in subsidy disbursal which can

range from several months to even past a year. Moreover, the implementation of the schemes is not necessarily consistent across geographies i.e. in certain cases, the enduser loan maybe get approved quickly but a similar loan proposal may not be considered in other areas. Thus, on the financing front, instead of relying on one source, the enterprise has been able to ensure provision of end-user financing from multiple sources which includes loans from government under MUDRA scheme, grants from Ministry of Textiles, tie-ups with MFIs such as Samunnati or partnering with organisations such as SELCO foundation. While the cost of the system is high for the targeted user, the payback typically ranges from 6 months to 1 year on account of an increase in productivity. Most importantly, most of Resham Sutra’s machines are powered by solar energy, which vastly improves the working conditions and creates a predictable and dramatically higher income for over 10,000 silk workers in India. Happy images of people plastering each other with powders and pigments, symbolising the triumph of good over ev il and the traditional start of the harvest season, convey an atmosphere of unfettered joy and abandon that’s atypical of a country whose rituals are generally characterised by restraint and decorum. ‘This is India letting its hair down’, the pictures proclaim ‘the subcontinental equivalent of a Thai New Year waterthrowing party and beach rave all rolled into one.’

Krishna, the Hindu God most associated with the Holi festival. Matheran, its principal town, is believed to be his birthplace and local shrines host some of the largest and most spectacular celebrations in the country, attracting thousands of revellers, many of whom travel from their villages in open-backed lorries. A prime example is the Dwarkadheesh Temple, where a seething mass of worshippers gathers on the morning of Holi to sing, dance and chant under a cloud of purple gulal.

Tour & Travel photographs of a densely packed courtyard filled with people covered from head to toe in purple, red and pink powders, this is probably where they were taken.

Barsana Well worth a visit at Holi time is Barsana, near Mathura, where an extraordinary ritual takes place in the afternoon. Men from neighbouring Nandgaon process down the narrow street leading to the main Krishna temple until their progress is blocked by ranks of women wielding heavy wooden sticks. Ritual blows, delivered with great gusto by the ladies, reign down on the men’s special leather shields – a spectacle enjoyed by a huge crowd of onlookers covered in brightly coloured gulal powders.

Jaipur Holi festivities in the Pink City used to be dominated by a glittering elephant procession, led by the Maharaja swaying atop a giant tusker in his gilded howdah, like a vision from Mughal times. Since 2012, however,

the event has been banned due to concerns over animal welfare, but Jaipur remains a Holi hotspot. A major focal point is the big gala bash in the palace hosted by the royal family in aid of local charities.

Amritsar

The royal palace in Udaipur is the best place to be on the eve of Holi, known as ‘Holika Dahan’, when the local Maharaja lights a ceremonial bonfire in the central courtyard to mark the start of the celebrations. Afterwards, guests retire for cocktails and a lavish dinner, followed by a firework display.

Few non-Hindu visitors know of its existence which makes it another of the best places to celebrate Holi Festival, but Amritsar holds a second ‘Golden Temple’, dedicated to the Goddess Durga. Like its more richly gilded cousin across town, the shrine sits on a rectangular lake, reached via a narrow causeway. Its marble-lined precincts are the focus of a particularly enjoyable celebration on the morning of Holi, when locals and pilgrims gleefully play ‘gulal’. Foreign visitors are considered a prime target, of course. Powered by: BANDHU

Ancient Indian Wonders Henry Cousens called this monument the “finest in Kannada country after Halebidu”. These Western Chalukya monuments, regional variants of existing dravida (South Indian) temples, defined the Karnata dravida tradition. The Mahadeva temple is officially protected as a national monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple plan consists of a shrine (cella) which is connected to a closed mantapa (hall) by a vestibule (antechamber). The closed mantapa leads to an open pillared mantapa, with the temple as a whole facing the east. Some parts of the temple, such as the cornice and parapet over the outer edge of the roof of the open mantapa are missing. The main temple, the sanctum of which has a linga (symbol of Shiva), is surrounded by thirteen minor shrines, each with its own linga. The temple has two other shrines, dedicated to Murthinarayana and Chandraleshwari, parents of Mahadeva, the Chalukya commander who consecrated the temple.

The closed mantapa has a doorway on each side, with the eastern doorway leading to the open mantapa and the western doorway to the sanctum. The door panels are well wrought and the ceiling of the porches have a ribbed design in them. The decoration of the outer walls follows the same pattern as

that of the shrine. The great open mantapa has 64 pillars, 24 of which are full pillars which start from the floor and support the main ceiling. The remaining are half pillars (or “dwarf pillars”) which start from the bench (parapet wall) that surrounds the mantapa and support the sloping eaves. The pillars in this hall bear similarities to the porch pillars at the Dodda Basappa

Temple at Dambal and the lathe-turned pillars (whose rounded sections are latheturned) at the Kasivisvesvara Temple at Lakkundi. The square ceiling of the open mantapa which are supported by the four central pillars exhibits interesting fretted stonework. The ceiling here has been worked into a decorative arabesque foliage and makaras (mythical beasts) which flow from the mouth of a Kirtimukha (gargoyle or demon face). This type of stonework is considered as high a quality as any. In stark contrast, the interior of the closed mantapa and the sanctum are plain and simple. It is believed that bracket figures that once adorned the outside pillars are now missing. These forward leaning bracket figures (Salabhanjika), which normally represent female forms in various poses (such as dancing or adorning themselves), would have rested on small blocks on the shaft of the pillars (capital), finding support from the underside of the overhanging cornice via a slot in their upper end.

it’s often best to give it some artificial wear so that it has a rustic look and feel. Painting is often discouraged in rustic design, particularly if you happen to have exposed beams or stone work on walls in your home. Remember that rustic home décor relies heavily upon the simple and
