After a down 2017-18 campaign, there’s nowhere to go but up for the Algoma Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds finished tied for 8th place with Waterloo in the OUA West Division last season with a 2-22 record. Their two wins came back-to-back in January to the aforementioned Waterloo Warriors and Brock Badgers. Algoma dropped 11-straight to end the season, but they will be looking to reverse their fortunes and bounce back in 2018-19. Algoma will have its top two scorers back from last season, as fifth-year guard Karina Cole (11.0 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Karly Fracalanza (8.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg) are back in a Thunderbirds’ uniform. After playing in just two games a year ago, Rebecca Wylie is back in the mix. Incoming guard Aimee Garland will look to help fill the void left by the departures. Garland comes to Algoma from the Canadian Mennonite University, where she was named the Rookie of the Year in the MCAC.

The 2017-18 season saw the Algoma Thunderbirds take another step forward as a program, and head coach Thomas Cory will be looking to help his team continue their upward trajectory.
Algoma posted a record of 6-18 a season ago, finishing in a tie for 7th spot in the OUA West Division with the Guelph Gryphons. Their win total increased by one from the 2016-17 season, and they will be looking to improve once again in 2018-19. Key contributors like leading scorer Ian Nash (16.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and Deng Gum (8.1 ppg, 8.1 rpg) are gone, but the Thunderbirds have talent back in the fold. After leading Algoma in rebounding last season, Nathan Riley (10.8 ppg, 9.3 rpg) is back to lead the way in 2018-19. Jermaine Lyle (8.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and Elijah Butler (4.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg) have also returned from last year’s team, but the Thunderbirds will be a younger team this season. In total, Algoma will have eight first-year players on their roster.

Things didn’t go as planned for the Brock Badgers in 2017-18, but it’s in the past and all eyes are focused on the 2018-19 campaign.
Brock finished with a 6-18 record a season ago, good enough for 7th spot in the OUA West Division, eight points ahead of the two-way tie for 8th place between Waterloo and Algoma. The Badgers dealt with several injuries over the course of the season to some of their star players, which leaves some asking themselves what could’ve been. This season, the Badgers return five of the top six scorers, including Kristin Gallant (13.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg) who was named an OUA All-Star as a rookie in 2017-18. Gallant led the Badgers in scoring despite missing seven games over the course of the regular season. Baelie Campbell (9.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg) is also back, while the likes of Miranda Smith and Ana Caldeira Rua will look to stay healthy and play the full season. Interim head coach Mike Rao takes over after serving as an assistant with the men’s program for the previous two seasons. He will have a veteran-heavy core that he can rely on, and he has a strong first-year recruiting class that will add some depth to the Badgers’ rotation as the season progresses along.

The Brock Badgers may have a new coach at the helm for the 2018-19 season, but the goal remains the same: win a national title.
Last season, the Badgers advanced to the U Sports Final 8 tournament, coming home as the Consolation Champions when all was said and done. As one of the nation’s top teams throughout the regular season and into the playoffs, the Badgers will be looking to build off last year’s trip to the National Championships and they have their sights set on bigger things in 2018-19. Brock went 21-3 over the course of the regular season, racking up 42 points and finishing 1st in the OUA West Division. A balanced offence led the way, one that saw at least five players average 9.7 points per game or more. All but one of those players are back this season. First-year head coach Madhav Trivedi will have a talented roster at his disposal this season, led by fifth-year veterans like Cassidy Ryan (16.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Johneil Simpson (14.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg). A slew of role players are back in the mix, giving Brock a deep roster that should once again contend for an OUA title and threaten for the national title when March rolls around. Trivedi comes to the Badgers after serving as an assistant coach with the McGill Redmen for five seasons. Trivedi will be the head coach on an interim basis, as Charles Kissi will be an assistant coach with Raptors 905 in the NBA G League for the 2018-19 campaign.

SEASON PREVIEW - W Fresh off their first-ever national championship, the Carleton Ravens have reloaded for another run at the crown.

Over the last two seasons, the Ravens have emerged as the team to beat in the OUA. They have a combined record of 41-1 in the regular season since the start of the 2016-17 campaign. Last season, the Ravens posted a record of 23-0 against conference opponents, and they would carry their momentum into the post-season. Carleton continued their strong play throughout the U Sports Final 8 Tournament, securing the first-ever women’s basketball championship in school history. Heading into the 2018-19 season, the Ravens will have a slightly different look to their roster. Gone are the team’s top three scorers from a season ago, a group that includes the likes of Heather Lindsay who averaged a double-double per game last season (11.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg). Carleton still has several key contributors back to help defend their national championship. Nicole Gilmore (8.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Alyssa Cerino (6.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg) are back and ready to take on starring roles with the team in 2018-19. Cynthia Dupont and Alexandra Trivieri round out the group of key veterans back in the mix for the upcoming season. After losing their top three scorers, the Ravens went out and reloaded their roster by way of seven newcomers. With their healthy mix of veterans and newcomers, Carleton will be looking to continue their winning ways and successfully defend their national championship when the post-season rolls around.

For the first time since the 2009-10 season, someone other than the Carleton Ravens will enter the new season as the defending national champions.
Carleton saw their streak of seven-straight national championships come to an end in 2017-18, but they kept their medal streak alive with a third-place finish. The Ravens went 23-0 over the course of the regular season, finishing atop the OUA East Division. Head coach Dave Smart and company will enter the new season in some unchartered waters without the title of defending national champions, but they will be the team to beat once more in 2018-19. With the exception of Cam Smythe (9.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg), the Ravens will have the bulk of their production back from last year. They are deep on both ends of the floor, and their guard rotation is one of the best in the country. The trio of Yaslin Joseph (14.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.9 apg), Munis Tutu (8.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.7 apg) and Emmanuel Owootoah (7.8 ppg, 2.8 apg) are back to lead the offense in the back court. Up front, Eddie Ekiyor (14.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg) is in prime position for a big season. If their roster couldn’t get any better or deeper, Carleton welcomes a talented recruiting class that is headlined by another player with NCAA Division I experience, and three hometown players from Ottawa. After transferring from the UTEP Miners in the Conference USA, guard Isiah Osborne opted to return to Canada, joining the Ravens for the upcoming season. Before joining the Miners, Osborne played for the Windsor Lancers, so he is familiar with the OUA. It may be hard to believe, but the 2018-19 edition of the Ravens could be better than last year’s team that went undefeated in the regular season. Carleton has its sights set on bringing the national championship back to the Nation’s Capital.

The 2017-18 season saw the Guelph Gryphons bounce back from a down season the year prior and advance to the OUA playoffs. Now, the team will be looking for more in 2018-19.
After posting just five wins in 2016-17, the Gryphons saw a big improvement as a team last season. They improved their record to 14-10 throughout the regular season, earning themselves a fourth-place finish in the OUA West Division for their efforts. The Gryphons closed out the regular season on a six-game winning streak to push themselves into the post-season. In 2018-19, Guelph will be looking to build off their turnaround season and take another step forward on their quest for an OUA title. Guelph will welcome back the bulk of their offensive production from a season ago, as five of their top six scorers are back for another season. The lone departure is Megan Brenkel (9.3 ppg), who was the top reserve for the Gryphons last season as she finished third on the team in scoring despite starting in just five games. Leading scorer Sarah Holmes (11.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg) appeared in just 13 games, but will be looking to put together an impressive senior season. The pair of Skyla Minaker and Ashley Wheeler will look to expand their respective roles with the team and help the Gryphons contend for a league title.

There will be several new faces in the lineup for the Guelph Gryphons as the 2018-19 season gets underway.
Guelph is coming off a season that saw them finish in the bottom half of the OUA West Division standings. The Gryphons ended the season in a tie for seventh-place in the division with the Algoma Thunderbirds with a record of 6-18. Now, the Gryphons will be looking to bounce back from their down year but will have to do so without a bulk of their offensive production as they will be without their top four scorers. The likes of leading scorer Daniel Dooley (12.5 ppg, 2.8 rpg), Jonathan Wallace, Taylor Boers, and Drew Walford are all gone from last year’s 12-point team. All four players ranked one through fourth on the team in scoring, and their departures will leave several holes that need to be filled moving forward. There will be opportunities aplenty for newcomers and returnees alike to step in and take on starring roles with the team from the outset of the season. Veterans Banky Alade (8.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Tommy Yanchus (8.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg) are back and will take on expanded roles with the Gryphon as they look to climb back into contention in the OUA standings. A recruiting class that’s headlined by Brett Sloan and Mason Cumming will look to add depth and production to the rotation for the Gryphons. Shawn Carey will redshirt this season and will not play in 2018-19.

Fresh off a season in which they doubled their win total from the year before, the Lakehead Thunderwolves are looking to continue their momentum in 2018-19.
Two seasons ago, Lakehead went 8-11 in league play, recording 16 points and finishing third in the old OUA Central Division. Last year, the Thunderwolves doubled their win total, going 16-8 over the regular season to collect 32 points. They finished the season with four straight wins to earn themselves a third-place finish in the newly-expanded OUA West Division. After making a big leap up in the standings last season, the Thunderwolves will look to the league’s top scorer and other veteran returnees to help keep their positive momentum going. Fifth year forward Leashja Grant led the OUA in both scoring and rebounding in 2017-18, averaging a double-double of 22.3 points and 14.1 rebounds per contest. Grant had 23 doubledoubles over 24 regular season games last season, making her the most consistent forward in the OUA, and likely the country. Third year guard Nikki Ylagan (8.7 ppg, 1.4 apg) will step into an expanded role this season after making just four starts a year ago, while third-year forward Lily Gruber-Schultz (8.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg) will look to compliment the play of Grant up front and give Lakehead a top-tier tandem in the front court.

The 2017-18 season wasn’t pretty for Lakehead, but a talented recruiting class should inject some excitement into the 2018-19 season. Lakehead posted a record of 2-22 over the course of the 2017-18 regular season, landing them in last place in the OUA West Division. After a pair of exhibition wins over the Winnipeg Wesmen in September, the Thunderwolves had to wait until the calendar switched to 2018 before they would find the win column again. They earned a split against the Guelph Gryphons to open the new calendar year, and they followed that up with a split against the Waterloo Warriors to close out the month. Now, the Thunderwolves are looking to bounce back, and they went south of the border to bolster their roster with a pair of former NCAA Division I talents. In the off-season, Lakehead landed a pair of commitments from players with NCAA experience, as both Isaiah Traylor and Ottawa, ON native Kevin Ndahiro committed to the Thunderwolves. Traylor most recently played for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in the Southland Conference, while Ndahiro played for the Stetson Hatters in the Atlantic Sun Conference back in 2016-17 before transferring to North Alabama (NVAA Div. 2) last season. The pair will join a returning group that features fifth-year guard Nick Burke (11.4 ppg, 3.5 apg) and Quincy Johnson (7.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg). Lakehead will rely on their veterans, both new and returning alike, to lead the team on their quest to climb out of the basement in the OUA standings.

They may have closed last season on a fourgame losing streak, but the past is in the past for the Laurentian Voyageurs, and the 2018-19 season presents a fresh start for a team that will return the bulk of its production this year.
At year’s end, the Voyageurs found themselves in seventh place in the OUA East Division with a record of 5-18, just six points ahead of the last-place Nipissing Lakers. Four straight losses to end the season didn’t do Laurentian any favours, but the past cannot be changed. Now, the Voyageurs are set to embark on a new season with several familiar faces back in the mix and ready to reverse their fortunes from the 2017-18 season. Fifth year guard Emily Tinnes led the Voyageurs in scoring last season with an average of 12.4 points per game to go along with 3.2 assists. Tinnes is back at Laurentian this season, as are three others who ranked within the top five in team scoring a season ago. The loss of top rebounder L’Ashante Henry (11.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg) will hurt on both ends of the court, but the Voyageurs have several veterans and newcomers alike who can step in and fill the void. Laurentian struggled from three-point range last season, shooting just 27.5% from long range. Improved shooting from the team as a whole will help the team progress up in the standings in 2018-19.

With the reigning U SPORTS Male StudentAthlete of the Year back in the mix for the 2018-19 season, the Laurentian Voyageurs are looking to bounce back from a dismal finish to last season and once again contend for an OUA title. The 2017-18 season saw the Voyageurs look like two completely different teams at times. While they finished the regular season with a record of 16-7 overall and in fourth-place in the OUA East Division, the Voyageurs looked like one of the nation’s top teams early in the year. Laurentian opened the year with a 16-2 record, only to drop the final five games of the regular season to fall to fourth-place in the standings. This year, Laurentian will be looking to have consistent success throughout the season and prove to everyone that they are among the nation’s best teams. Third year guard Kadre Gray is back to lead the way for the Voyageurs. The reigning OUA Player of the Year and U Sports Male Student-Athlete of the Year led the league in scoring last season (24.4 ppg) and will be among the leaders once again this season. Laurentian will look to the likes of fifth-year guard JD West and fourth-year guard Anthony Iacoe to give the team secondary scoring options on offense. Several players will step into new roles with the team after the loss of three fifth-year players from 2017-18, so finding chemistry during the early part of the season will be key to the success of the Voyageurs.

The 2017-18 season ended the stellar career for Nicole Morrison with the Laurier Golden Hawks. Now, the team will look to new stars to help guide the team on their quest for OUA glory.
Just like the men’s side, the Golden Hawks’ women’s team finished in the middle of the OUA West Division standings with a record of 10-14. Their 20-points earned them a sixth-place finish in a packed middle in the division, as 12 points separated third and sixth place. The program’s all-time leading scorer will pass the torch in 2018-19, and a pair of veterans will look to step to the plate. Jill Condron (6.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Rachel Woodburn (6.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg) ranked second and third on the team in scoring last season, respectively. Add in fellow guard Brianna Iannazzo (5.8 ppg, 2.0 rpg), and the Golden Hawks have some depth and experience at the guard positions. The versatility and height of Condron and Woodburn allow for them to play forward positions, but the Golden Hawks will look to get some increased production from their true forwards in 2018-19.

The Laurier Golden Hawks found themselves in the thick of things in a crowded OUA West Division last season, and they’re hoping that this is the year they break free from the pack.
Laurier finished the 2017-18 season with a .500 record of 12-12, good enough for fourth in the division. A total of 10 points separated second place from fifth, so things could have gone several different ways. The Golden Hawks have a talented core group returning in 2018-19 to help guide the team on their climb up the standings, and they will be led by the reigning OUA Rookie of the Year who will be looking to build off an impressive first season at Laurier. Guard Ali Sow took home OUA Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year honours after posting 16.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game over 24 contests, only four of which were starts. Sow posted a strong stat line as the Golden Hawks’ top reserve a season ago. As a regular fixture in the starting five this year, Sow will be looking to one-up himself in 2018-19. He will have a strong core group back around him, headlined by forward Kemel Archer (9.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and guard Matt Minutillo (7.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg). In the off-season, the Golden Hawks added some size and depth to the front court rotation. Forwards Majok Gum, Zach Douglas, and Milan Roknic all stand at 6’7’’ or taller, giving the roster some extra size that will only help their game inside.

After finishing atop the OUA West Division in 2017-18 and advancing to the U Sports Final 8 Tournament, a veteran McMaster Marauders squad will be looking to turn their regular season results into post-season success in 2018-19.
McMaster finished last season with a 20-4 regular season record, tied atop the division with the Windsor Lancers. In the playoffs, the Marauders would advance to the U Sports Final 8 Tournament, and they were looking to bring a national championship back to Hamilton. Losses in the quarter-finals and the consolation semi-finals sent the Marauders home early but left them hungry for more. Now, a veteran roster will look to help the Marauders advance back to the national championship tournament and contend for the title once again. The Marauders had four players average double-digit points a season ago, and all are back in uniform for the 2018-19 season. Fifth year guard Hilary Hanaka (15.1 ppg) led the team in scoring while shooting over 46% from the floor and over 41% from three-point range. Up front, fifth-year forward Linnaea Harper (12.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg) led the team in rebounding while giving the Marauders a talented tandem in the front court with Olivia Wilson (10.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg). Once again, the Marauders have the talent and the depth to contend atop the OUA standings.

On the heels of a season that saw them finish right in the middle of the OUA West Division, the McMaster Marauders have their sights set on bigger things in 2018-19.
Last season, the Marauders finished with a record of 11-14, good for fifth-place in the nine-team division. They closed the season with six straight victories, which created some positive buzz for the 2018-19 season. While they lost leading scorer Miles Seward (19.1 ppg) to the NBL Canada, McMaster returns its share of talent that should help them contend in the West Division. Add a talented recruiting class and Patrick Tathem’s team is in prime position to turn some heads. Guard David McCulloch (18.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg) was a consistent threat on the offensive end of the floor, recording double-digit points in 15 games to close the regular season. While McCulloch will lead things in the back court, fourth-year forward Matt Quiring (10.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg) will anchor the front-court rotation. The Marauders had four players average double-digit points last season, and with only two of them back in 2018-19, there will be opportunities for players to step up and take on a starring role with the team. A talented freshmen class has helped McMaster add depth across their roster, and the influx of talent has people excited for the future of the Marauders. The 2018-19 season should see McMaster take another positive step on their quest for a title, and they will look to continue their six-game regular season winning streak from a season ago.

After another last-place finish in 2017-18, the Nipissing Lakers are looking for any sort of positive momentum to get them out of the basement in the OUA standings.
Back in 2015-16, the Lakers won three games in a season. Over the last two seasons, Nipissing has combined to win three games in total, two of which came last year. The Lakers went 2-21 last season, finishing with four points and in last-place in the tough OUA East Division. After a win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on November 24th, Nipissing rode a 17-game losing streak to close out the season. The Lakers didn’t have a player average more than 7.1 points per game, and they averaged just 46.5 points per game as a team. In 2018-19, the Lakers will be without their top two scorers from last season in Heidi Smith (7.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg) and Maria Corney (6.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg), leaving forward Jamie Soffer (6.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg) as the top returning scorer. Nipissing will look to other returnees to help on the offensive end of the floor and help lead the Lakers to a few more wins over the course of the season. They will need to shore up their defense as well, as they allowed their opponents to average 72.9 points per game a year ago.

After previous struggles, the Nipissing Lakers are coming off back-to-back double-digit point seasons, with greater aspirations on the horizon.
Three seasons ago, the Lakers finished with just four wins in the OUA Central Division. Now, after posting 18 points in 2016-17 and 16 points last season, the Lakers are on their way up. They may have finished seventh a year ago, but they were just six points behind the Queen’s Gaels for sixth. A four-game losing streak to close the season for the Lakers stopped any chance they had of catching the Gaels. Looking at the 2018-19 season, Nipissing will look to their leading scorer to help the program sustain their positive momentum from the past two seasons and build on it. Fifth year guard Marcus Lewis is coming off a year in which he averaged a team-high 17.3 points per game on 47.7% shooting from the field. He shot 53.8% on two-point attempts but shot just 14.0% from three-point range. Up front, fifth-year center Marvin Ngonadi (7.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg) is back and ready to have a bigger impact on games to close out his career. The losses of both Jaeden Lewis and Justin Shaver hurt the overall depth of the team, but the likes of Ismael Kaba and Quintin Ashitei will look to help fill the void and step into bigger roles. Despite finishing below .500 last year, the Lakers picked up road wins over the likes of McMaster, Western, and Laurentian. Nipissing may not be a basketball powerhouse in the OUA, but they can win on the road and they should not be overlooked on the schedules this season.

With a veteran group in tow for the 2018-19 season, the Ottawa Gee-Gees have their sights set on an OUA title and more.
The Gee-Gees posted a record of 15-8 last season to finish third in the highly-competitive OUA East Division. Ottawa finished four points behind Queen’s for second place, and 16 points behind their in-town rivals from Carleton for top spot. The last time that the Gee-Gees won the OUA Championship was back in the 2011-12 season, and their title win was in the middle of Windsor’s dominance of the OUA. Looking ahead to the 2018-19 season, the Gee-Gees have a veteran group that will be looking to end their six-year title drought. The top six scorers are back from last year’s team, including second-year forward Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu. As a first-year, Lefevbre-Okankwu led the Gee-Gees with 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting 50.2% from the field. Third year guard Amelie Hachey (10.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg) was the only player to start every regular season game for the team last season. In the middle, fourth-year Angela Ribarich (7.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) will look to continue her progression as a top-tier center in the OUA and put together another impressive season. Ottawa has a veteran starting five to open the season, all of whom were regulars a year ago.

Often overshadowed by their rival in the Nation’s Capitol, the Ottawa Gee-Gees are hoping to step out of the shadow cast by the Carleton Ravens and contend for the national title in 2018-19.
The Gee-Gees finished in a tie for second place in the East Division with the Ryerson Rams a season ago, posting a record of 17-6. Two of Ottawa’s six losses came at the hands of the Ravens, and four of their losses came away from home. The Gee-Gees are a tough team to knock off on their home floor, and they will be looking to continue their home-court dominance in 2018-19. A veteran group returns to lead the way, while a group of talented newcomers will look to help get the Gee-Gees over the hump. Ottawa will be without their leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago, as Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles (13.2 ppg, 8.9 rpg) has graduated. The guard spots will be the strong point for the Gee-Gees, as first-year point guard Kevin Civil will join a rotation that features veterans Brandon Robinson (12.0 ppg, 3.1 apg), Sean Stoqua (12.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg), and Gabe Sabean (8.2 ppg, 1.9 rpg). Add in wing Olivier Cadieux, and the Gee-Gees will be talented in the back court. Up front, the addition of first-year forward Guillaume Pepin adds depth to a rotation that hasn’t proven itself yet in the OUA. With talent across the board, the Gee-Gees are hoping to make a serious run at the OUA East Division title and knock their rivals off the top perch.

After knocking on the door in 2017-18, the Queen’s Gaels are ready to kick it down and contend for the program’s first title in 18 years.
Queen’s finished second in the OUA East Division last season, recording 34 points by way of their 17-6 record. They trailed the Carleton Ravens by 12 points for first place in the division. The Gaels fell short on their quest for a spot in the U Sports Final 8 Tournament during the post-season, extending their OUA title drought another season in the process. The last time that Queen’s took home the OUA title was back during the 2000-01 season. It’s been 18 years since the Gaels have been crowned OUA Champions, and they will be looking to end their streak in 2018-19. The Gaels return their top three scorers from last year’s team. Fourth year post Veronika Lavergne led the Gaels with an average of 13.5 points to go along with 6.8 rebounds per contest. Fellow forward Sophie de Goode led the team in rebounding, averaging 7.0 rebounds to go along with 9.9 points. In the back court, Marianne Alarie (12.3 ppg) was the focal point in the guard rotation when it came to scoring points, as she had four games with 20+ points during the regular season. The loss of Andrea Priamo (9.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg) will sting, but the Gaels have a talented group of newcomers that will help fill the void.

If you want a team that could surprise some people in 2018-19, look no further than the Queen’s Gaels.
The Gaels are coming off a season in which they finished just one game below the .500 mark at 11-12, good enough for the sixth spot in the OUA East Division standings. Four straight losses to close the season saw Queen’s slip below the .500 mark for the year, and their losing streak derailed any positive momentum the team had heading towards the post-season. Fast forward to the 2018-19 season, and the Gaels have several key contributors back in the mix and they will be joined by a talented first-year class that adds some depth and intrigue to the roster. Leading scorer Jaz Bains (18.3 ppg, 5.3 apg) is back for his fifth year of eligibility, and he will be the focal point of the offense once again for the Gaels. Across both the regular season and exhibition play, Bains scored in double-figures in 25 of the 27 games he took part in. He was one of the most consistent scorers in the country, let alone the OUA, and he will look to continue that in 2018-19. Third year guard Matt Elcock (6.0 ppg) and Quinton Gray (8.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg) are back in the back court alongside Bains. Up front, Tanner Graham (14.7 ppg, 10.4 rpg) is back and looking to build off his double-double average from a season ago. Add in a young group of incoming players that features guard Cameron Bett and forward Swann Fargeau-Faucon, and there’s a heightened level of optimism surrounding Queen’s this season.

After two seasons without the OUA title in their hands, the Ryerson Rams will be looking to secure the 2018-19 OUA title and contend for the U Sports National Championship as a result.
The Rams are coming off a fourth-place finish in the OUA East Division, posting a 13-10 record a season ago to record 26 points. For the second year in a row, the Rams were unable to claim the OUA title after securing the title in 2015-16. Their OUA title from two seasons was their first in school history, and the Rams have their sights set on securing the second one in a much quicker fashion. With all their key contributors back from last year’s team, the Rams will look to use their experience to climb in the East Division standings and get back into contention for the league title. Ryerson will welcome back their top eight scorers from last season, all of whom averaged at least 4.5 points per contest. Seven of the eight players saw game action in at least 21 regular season games, while four started in all 23 games. Fifth year forward Sofia Paska (20.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg) led the team in scoring and rebounding a year ago, and she will once again be the go-to option for Ryerson this season. Guard Cara Tiemens stuffed the stat sheet last year as a fourth-year player, averaging 11.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. Add in second-year players like Jama Bin-Edward and Leyki Sorra, both of whom are coming off strong freshmen seasons in their own right, and the Rams have a talented roster that now has another year of experience under its belt.

The Ryerson Rams are coming off a silver medal finish at the 2018 U Sports Final 8 Tournament, and after losing one of the best players to ever don a Ryerson uniform, they are looking to get themselves back to the national title game in 2018-19 with a new face leading the way. Ryerson finished last season in a tie for second place with Ottawa in the OUA East Division with a record of 16-7. The Rams advanced to the OUA title game against Carleton, and despite the loss, they secured a spot in the national championships. There, wins over the Alberta Golden Bears and the Ravens propelled the Rams to the national championship game. They were nine seconds away from going to overtime against the Calgary Dinos, but a late bucket from Mambi Diawara gave the Dinos the 79-77 win. The loss also ended the career of Manny Diressa (21.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg) at Ryerson. Now, the Rams will look to new faces to lead the team on their quest towards the national championship. Second year forward Tanor Ngom (5.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg) had himself an eventful off-season. The 7’2’’ forward was invited to the Nike Basketball Academy, a showcase that features 20 of the top collegiate basketball players who compete in drills and scrimmages in front of NBA scouts. Ngom was the first-ever player from U Sports to be selected for the event. He will look to take his experience from the event and use that to fuel a big year for the Rams in 2018-19. Ryerson will have their share of veterans on this year’s roster, as seven players will be in their fourth or fifth year of eligibility. In addition to a returning group that features Ngom, Jean-Victor Mukama (11.3 ppg, 7.9 rpg), and Myles Charvis (12.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg), the Rams will have fifth-year guard Yusuf Ali on the roster after transferring from the Seneca Sting, giving head coach Roy Rans yet another offensive weapon. Ali posted 14.8 points and 6.1 assists per game for the reigning CCAA Champions in 2017-18.

After closing the 2017-18 season on a six-game winning streak, the Toronto Varsity Blues will look to regain that momentum early in 2018-19 and break free from a crowded middle in the OUA East Division.
The Varsity Blues finished the 2017-18 season with a record of 11-12. Their 22 points earned them a tie for the fifth spot in the divisio, sitting just four points behind the rival Ryerson Rams for third. The Varsity Blues used a six-game winning streak over the final month of the regular season to climb even with the Lions and earn their fourth-place finish. In 2018-19, the depth of the Varsity Blues will be tested as a handful of key reserves have graduated from the program. Despite the program’s personnel losses, the Varsity Blues still have their leading scorer back for her fourth year of eligibility. Scarborough native Keyira Parkes led Toronto last season with 16.8 points on 46.6% shooting from the floor. She ranked fifth in the OUA in points per game, and first in three-point shooting (45.8%). Third year forward Nada Radonjic (8.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg) will look to build off a strong 2017-18 season, as will fourth-year Sarah Bennett (8.2 ppg, team-high 6.0 rpg). In terms of newcomers, 6’0’’ first-year forward Jessica Muha has the size and talent to be an impact player right away for the Varsity Blues, and she gives Toronto six players who stand at 6’0’’ or taller.

After losing their top two scorers from last year’s team that finished in fifth-place, the Toronto Varsity Blues will look to draw on an eventful off-season and climb in the OUA standings in 2018-19.
The Varsity Blues finished in the middle of the OUA East Division last season, posting a record of 14-10 and finishing in fifth-place in the eight-team division. Toronto was one of three teams to take on the Duke Blue Devils in exhibition play back in August, and despite the loss, the game showed that the Varsity Blues have their share of young talent that should help the team continue their growth and help them climb in the league standings. While they will be without their top two scorers in Reilly Reid (14.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Sage Usher (12.8 ppg, 3.4 apg), the Varsity Blues have a talented trio ready to take the reigns and lead the team. As a first-year player in 2017-18, guard Evan Shadkami (10.7 ppg, 2.1 rpg) averaged under 17 minutes per game and didn’t make one start over his 20 appearances, yet he is the team’s top returning scorer this season. Shadkami closed the season with five straight double-digit scoring efforts, four of which were wins for the Varsity Blues. He has shown the ability to lead the offense, and with more minutes expected to come his way this year, his production will surely improve. Fellow guard Nikola Paradina (9.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and forward Daniel Johansson (9.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg) bring veteran leadership to the team, and both will be looked upon to help carry the team on both ends of the floor.

With nine first-year players on their roster for the 2018-19 season, the Waterloo Warriors will be Canada’s youngest team.
The Warriors are coming off a 2-22 season, one that saw them finish in a tie for last place in the OUA West Division with the Algoma Thunderbirds with four points apiece. A win over the Brock Bagders on February 3rd helped Waterloo avoid a solo finish in last place, as they dropped their final four games of the season following the win. Heading into the 2018-19 season, the Warriors have nine players who will be first-year student-athletes with the Warriors. Their returnees will be looked upon for veteran leadership, but offensive production could very well come from anywhere on the roster. Fifth year guard Sydney Wilson was the team’s top scorer last season, averaging 8.2 points per game to go along with 3.2 rebounds. Aphia Ward (6.7 ppg) and Hilary Ferguson (4.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg) round out the core group of returnees from last year’s team, meaning that the newcomers will have ample opportunities to make a name for themselves early on. The Warriors brought in eight players from Ontario, and one from Alberta (Val Rincon) to make up their 2018-19 recruiting class.

After yet another year with a record below the .500 mark, the Waterloo Warriors are hoping that the 2018-19 season is the year they climb into the playoff picture in the OUA.
Three seasons ago, the Warriors had just one win to their name. After posting five wins in 2016-17, Waterloo continued their improvement last season. In 2017-18, the Warriors went 8-16 over the course of the season, racking up 16 points to finish in sixth-place in the OUA West Division. While they finished below .500 yet again, they have continued to improve with each passing season, and they will be looking to continue that trend in 2018-19. Waterloo is home to one of the top forwards in the country in Nedim Hodzic. The third-year forward finished second in the OUA in scoring last season and first in rebounding, averaging 23.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Hodzic had 20 double-doubles over the course of the 2017-18 season, making him one of the more consistent threats on both ends of the floor. Fellow forwards Simon Petrov (18.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and David Ramon Prados (8.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg) give the Warriors one of the top forward groups in the conference. On the back end, the Warriors will need someone to step up and replace the production of Justin Hardy (10.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg).

After finishing in the middle of the OUA West Division last season, the Western Mustangs will see a heavy influx of youth into their roster for the 2018-19 season.
The Mustangs went 13-11 a season ago, posting 26 points to finish fifth out of nine in the West Division, with a loss in their regular season finale against the Guelph Gryphons keeping them just two points shy of a tie for fourth. After finishing in the middle-of-the-pack, the Mustangs will embark on the 2018-19 season without one of the OUA’s top scorers, and they will have a heavy dose of youth on their roster as eight players will enter their first year of eligibility with the team. Guard Mackenzie Puklicz started 23 of the team’s 24 games a season ago, averaging just shy of 35 minutes of court time per night out. Puklicz ranked fifth in the conference with an average of 18.0 points per contest to go along with 7.0 rebounds. After Puklicz, the Mustangs return four of their next top five scorers, a group that includes Julia Curran (12.4 ppg) and Maddie Horst (11.8 ppg). Add in Laura Graham (5.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg), and the top three returning scorers from last season were regulars in the starting lineup. With the loss of Puklicz and forward Victoria Heine (8.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg), the Mustangs will look for newcomers to step up and fill the voids early in the season. Western won’t quite be the youngest team in the country, as Waterloo will have nine first-year players on their 2018-19 roster. Developing the young talent for the Mustangs will be the top priority while trying to compete for the league title.

The bulk of their production is back from a season ago, and the Western Mustangs have the look of a team that can contend atop the OUA and advance to the U Sports Final 8 Tournament. Western is coming off a year in which they finished second in their division with 32 points. The Mustangs went 16-9 over the course of the regular season, and they closed out the regular season strong by going 7-3 over their final 10 games. While they were unable to secure the OUA title or earn a spot at the national championships, they did generate a ton of positive buzz about the future of the program. Western has the bulk of their production back from a season ago, and they welcome in a talented recruiting class that is headlined by one of the top players from the province of Ontario. The Mustangs had four players average double-digit points last year, and three of them are back in 2018-19. Third year guard Omar Shiddo (14.6 ppg, 2.1 rpg) led the team in scoring last season, while fourth-year forward Marko Kovac (14.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg) was the team’s top rebounder. Add in fourth-year guard Eriq Jenkins (11.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg), and the Mustangs have a veteran core that can lead the team on a nightly basis. The biggest recruit that Western landed this off-season is London-born forward Aaron Tennant. The 6’7’’ forward has an OFSAA AA title to his name, and he was named to Team Ontario in 2017. The local product will add depth to the roster for the Mustangs, and he will likely see big minutes from the outset of the season. When you add a talented recruiting class to a core group that features your top three scorers from a year ago, it’s a recipe for success. The Mustangs have the right mix of talent and experience in 2018-19, and they could turn some heads as the season progresses.

The Windsor Lancers have had a steady string of success recently and they will face high expectations again with 11 returning players.
Windsor is coming off a season that saw them go 20-4. They were tied atop the West Division with 40 points, and the two teams will likely compete with one another for the top spot again in 2018-19. The Lancers won six OUA titles in seven seasons from 2008-09 through to 201415, a stretch that saw the program win four national championships. Windsor will be looking to get past the Marauders and the rest of the OUA to secure yet another stop at the U Sports Final 8 Tournament and add to their national title count. Given all the talent that the Lancers return this season, leading scorer Emily Prevost isn’t among the group of returnees. Prevost led Windsor with 14.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game last season, and her departure will be felt on both ends of the court. Returning up front is forward Olivia Osamusali (5.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg), who holds the Windsor record for most rebounds in a game with 18. With the loss of Prevost, several players will see an influx in minutes, returnees and newcomers alike. On the glass, Osamusali has the potential to be among the league leaders when all is said and done. Carly Steer (10.8 ppg) will take on a bigger role in terms of scoring production, as will the rest of the roster.

With several newcomers on the roster for the 2018-19 season, the Windsor Lancers will be focused on developing their young talent for the future as the season progresses.
The Lancers are coming off a 13-11 season in 2017-18, one that saw them finish third in the West Division. Three straight wins to close the year helped the Lancers stay ahead of both Laurier and McMaster for the third spot in the standings. Once the season came to an end, so did the careers of OUA All-Star Mike Rocca (18.0 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Marcus Jones (13.4 ppg, 2.6 apg), the team’s top two scorers over the course of the year. In 2018-19, the Lancers have a total of six first-year players, so developing their young talent will be a top priority as the season progresses. One of their top first-year players is a local product from Windsor. Forward Thomas Kennedy comes to the Lancers from St. Joseph’s High School in Windsor, and the 6’9’’ big man will have the chance to be an impact player from the start of the season. With Anthony Zrvnar (10.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg) as the top returning forward for the team, Kennedy will see his fair share of minutes from the first game of the season. On the back end, Damian Persaud (8.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg) will be a regular in the starting lineup after making just three starts a year ago. The loss of both Jones and Rocca in the back-court leaves two big holes to fill, but it also gives the young talent for the Lancers a chance to prove themselves early in the season.

After a down year in 2016-17, the York Lions bounced back in a big way last season, with their eyes on a continued climb in 2018-19.
It’s been over 10 years since York took home the OUA title. In 2016-17, York won just five games, but increased their win total by more than double last year to finish with a record of 11-12. The Lions finished in a tie for fifth-place in the East Division with Toronto, a big improvement on their last-place finish the year prior. Heading into 2018-19, the Lions will be missing their leading scorer, but they have a talented group back that will look to help the team continue their forward progress after a down year two season ago. Forward Lindsay Shotbolt was one of the OUA’s top forwards last season, finishing second in the league with 12.3 rebounds per game to go along with 16.7 points. Shotbolt accounted for over 25% of the Lions’ points per game on offense last season (64.4 ppg as a team), so her loss will be felt on both ends of the floor. Fifth year guard Chante Clarke (11,5 ppg, 2.9 rpg) will look to build off a strong 2017-18 season with the Lions. The former Memorial University guard will take on a starring role with York to close out her collegiate career. York returns their second through sixth top scorers from last year’s team, all of whom averaged at least 5.7 points per contest. Despite the loss of Shotbolt, the Lions will be in good hands this season as they look to continue climbing back towards contention in the OUA standings.

The York Lions are coming off a dismal 2017-18 season that saw them finish in last-place in their division, and they will be looking to bounce back and get out of the OUA cellar.
After opening the season with two wins over their first three games, the Lions wouldn’t find the win column the rest of the way in 2017-18. York finished the year with a 2-21 record, which was good for last-place in the OUA East Division, and their four points tied Lakehead for the lowest total across both divisions. The Lions rode a 20-game losing streak to the end of the season, but they will look to reverse their fortunes in 2018-19 as a new season gets under way. The Lions have some key pieces back from last season, including leading scorer Gianmarco Luciani (10.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg). Luciani was one of just two players to average double-digit points per game last season at York (Josiah Riley; 10.6 ppg in 10 games). Second year guard Prince Kamunga (8.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg) appears to be in for an increased work load after a strong inaugural season in 2017-18. On the transfer market, the Lions bolstered their roster with the additions of Brendon Chevannes (Concord University) and Stefan Grujic (Humber College). Chevannes will add depth to the back court while Grujic gives the Lions another big body in the paint.
