WHAT REMAINS OF TIM MURTON’S TWILIGHT ZOO M I R A L I A L M AU L A
Illuminate Elora
T
im Murton’s Twilight Zoo consists of larger-than-life Halloween sculptures made of paper, gauze, and light. Each fall, since 1996, Elora has been transformed by these sculptures through the work of volunteers. Although some locals told me that the artist is “no longer doing the Twilight Zoo,” what remains of it — at least to someone who never got the full experience — was enough to make the drive to Elora well worth it. Walking around the quaint downtown area, I inspected
the limestone walls carefully. As the sun was dipping out of sight, I searched sculpture after sculpture looking for verification of what I had been told: the sculptures illuminate at night. When I saw a light blue extension cord creeping out of a skeleton, my lips burst into a smile. Surely enough, with the arrival of night and the contrast of light, the sculptures came to life. They were nothing short of hauntingly beautiful — emphasis on the haunting.
