Painting pumpkins: DIY sugar vs. sugar-free CANDY jack-o’-lantern nail art THE ULTIMATE

A R I A N A LO N G L E Y

HALLOWEEN LET’S FACE IT. Jack-o’-lanterns are a waste of food. This week, I teach you how to create your own jack-o’-lantern nail art in an attempt to save a pumpkin. We’re using a moderate amount of freehand painting for this design. Because painting on a small surface is difficult, we’re going to use something called the “Toothpick Trick.” You need to use acrylic paint, or craft paint, to create the design. You can scratch the paint off the nail if you don’t like the design or make a mistake. However, before you start painting, you need to apply a quick dry top coat over your base colour and wait for an hour to let it dry. If you don’t, when you go to scratch the paint off, it will score your base polish and ruin it.

1.

With that said, paint your nails orange. When the orange is dry, add a quick dry top coat and wait an hour.

4. Underneath

your eyes, create another smaller triangle for the nose. Leave the last quarter of the nail free for your smile.

5. Create

a semi-circle in the last quarter of your nail. Because you waited an hour for your first layer of top coat to dry, you can scratch off any mistakes you may have made along the way.

W I T H H A L L OW E E N f a s t approaching, store shelves are packed to the brim with chocolate and candy. Each year dawns new innovations and twists to much-loved favourites. As we are becoming a more health-conscious society and have the science to back it up, there are a lot more sugar-free candy options available. Consumption of high amounts of sugar can be linked to a variety of health issues, and not to mention the potential cause of a nasty toothache. Plenty of Gryphons would consider choosing a healthier candy option, but how do sugar and sugar-free candies really compare?

To make sugar-free candy sweet, two types of sweeteners exist: sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners.

Sugar alcohols can be found in candies, ice cream, and cookies. Since it isn’t actually a sugar, it can be used to make “sugar-free” products and is a low-calorie sweetener. There is a risk with the consumption of sugar alcohols, however, as they are known to cause an upset stomach and can have the effect of a laxative. A r tificial sweeteners are a zero-calorie option for producing sugar-free candy, but there has been some evidence that has linked artificial sweeteners to certain types of cancer. Taste is the most critical part of a great candy. Sugar-free varieties of

chocolate or candy might not be quite the taste you are looking for. It could be argued that the taste of the sugar-free varieties don’t quite match their “sugarful” counterparts. At the end of the day, you are still eating candy, and the real key is to control the amount you eat. People may believe that because something is sugar-free, it can be consumed in higher quantities. But don’t forget, just because it’s sugar-free doesn’t mean it’s fat, calorie, or carb-free. If health is what you’re after, candy should be avoided all together. But if you’re looking for a guilty pleasure, go for whatever makes you and your inner child happy.

some black craft paint, place two small dots a quarter of the way down the top of your nail. These will be the top of the eyes.

The soup is warm and delicious, and there aren’t any weird ingredients in it like frog legs or fish eyes, as far as you can tell. Mrs. White tells you about how she came to occupy the basement of her house. She has bad knees and can’t go up and down stairs, so she gets all her groceries delivered. She never had any children and her husband died a few years ago, but she doesn’t feel lonely because there’s a black cat that comes and goes in her house. She’s unaware of the rumours about her house and laughs heartily when you tell her about it. As you slurp up the rest of your soup, you realize that you’ve enjoyed her company greatly. You ask if you can visit again, and Mrs. White is delighted.

Suddenly you remember that your friends are still waiting outside for you. She points you to the sliding back door, where you can easily leave. You say goodbye, give her a hug, and promise to see her again. When you return next week, Mrs. White is nowhere to be seen. You talk to some neighbours and ask if they’ve seen her around, but they all give you strange looks. No one has lived in that house since a man was murdered by his wife 100 years ago, they explain. You take one last look at the house before you go. The eyes of a black cat gleam at you from a second floor window. Startled, you do a double take. When you look back, there’s nothing there.
