A word Of Advice AS Seniors embark on the next chapter of their lives, their teachers take a moment to give meaningful advice. “Discover your passion and pursue it.” “Money is awesome, but happiness is better.” “Work hard, but also enjoy it.” “When you commit, actually stay committed.” “Work hard.” Whatever you choose to do take it seriously and don’t party too hard.” “Remember, you might have to help your parents let go. Set a schedule to contact them and stick to it.”

“Pick a profession that you love, because unhappiness isn’t worth the money.” “Study hard. Have fun. Enjoy the ride.” “Procrastination is inevitable however, try not to put off to tomorrow what you can do today.”

“Never pass up free food and stay on top of your laundry.” “Spend only what you make. Don’t get a credit card. But if you do, pay it off each month.”

Skyler says

goodbye

Oh boy, here we go. The final Skyler Says. Did I know this was going to happen? Sure, but I always kind of figured I was exempt from time passing somehow, like I had the Peter Pan VIP treatment from aging or growing up. But I don’t. This space was normally reserved for me completing a harrowing task, usually at risk or danger to myself, and writing about it so people could laugh or be entertained by my idiocy. But what to do to end it? I struggled with the idea for days. What could I do as the big showstopper, the stunt to end all stunts? And then it came to me while I was cleaning out my bathroom drawers and I found my old eyeshadow pallet – it was so sparkly and messy and loud, and I giggled at how I used to swear by it my freshman year. I thought this was a good idea? I thought this was the way to live? This is how I believed the order of things should be? Freshman year me was an idiot. I was an idiot sophomore and junior years, too. So is senior me, come to think of it. But I’ve gone through so many changes - What I believe, who I associate with, where I am in my life. But I’ve also gone through subtle changes. Something so small, you don’t notice how much it’s different until you stumble upon step one. After all, isn’t my entire high school career one giant experiment? How much will it go to waste if it’s not recorded – the biggest proof of my idiocy I have.

Freshman Year

Wow, would you take a look at that glo-up?

The Look: I had Blonde-Brown hair that I styled like Flo from Progressive. My two front teeth were so far apart my tongue could get stuck in between them. My face was bright red, and my acne was huge, but I barely believed in makeup. I put my hair in lopsided rollers every morning, and I wanted bangs, but I didn’t want to cut my hair, so I parted my hair in the Trump style and hairsprayed my combover in place. Boy I Thought I was in Love With: Cole Bellamy. He was in the one German class I took, and he was the reason I got a C. He was just too distracting.

I was obsessed with Doctor Who, Supernatural, and Sherlock. At the same time. Superwholock, they called it. I had recently discovered Tumblr and was in the beginning stages of becoming an activist – but in the most obnoxious, in your face, problematic way. I was smug, I was loud, I’d wear converse in the hallways and feel superior about it. I rode the bus, I liked to scream, and I liked Katy Perry.

Lesson I learned: I sacrificed my comfort zone so the boys who asked me out wouldn't feel bad about themselves. I stayed in relationships I didn't want to be in because everybody told me how awful of a person I'd be if I dumped them. I tolerated creepy behavior and unwanted advances because I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

Fix this spacing - Mary

The Trump Hair had to be brushed out for the day I got my braces. It would come back in style eventually, give or take three years.

Sophomore Year The look: Gained twenty pounds, crimped my bright dipped-dyed pink hair with bangs that hung in my eyes, braces, thick winged eyeliner what never looked even. My foundation was more orange than anything, and my bloated self was stuffed into clothes too tight for me. Boy I Thought I was in Love With: Caleb Chipman. Don't ask me, I couldn't tell you why.

Survived a medical phenomenon that baffled doctors and walked away with misshaped scars and an increased fear of needles. Fell asleep in Geometry. Laughed so hard at lunch that people turned to stare, and then second semester was forced to sit and discuss lopsided politics with seniors who scared me. I saw concerts and listened to mashups. Apparently, I was the only one in my class that read A Tale of Two Cities in its entirety. English class and Newspaper were the only classes that I bothered to care about. I used my couch cushions to learn cartwheels indoors. Failed.

Lesson I learned: People do care about you, at least a little. There are little quirks you do or jokes you say that people notice, and like, and remember. You aren't completely invisible. Couldn’t find a picture of hair both pink and crimped - must’ve known any photographic evidence of that time was a bad idea.

someone tell me why I’m wearing a shade of blue in every one of these pictures?

Senior Issue I The Chronicle I 12

Junior Year

The yea r APUSH almost k illed me

The Look: My hair had been red a few months now, and my bangs were less sk8er boy, but my hair dried in greasy coils. I wore sports bras to make my boobs smaller. I got my braces off. I discovered that I like dressing like college girls from the 1950s. Realized that I could do something other than thick black eyeliner, and that other makeup indeed existed. Boy I Thought I was In Love With: Mason Hamilton. Then Nick Baur. Because who wasn’t.

Floated between groups of friends I almost joined, squads I could’ve been a part of but never really stuck. Attached myself to seniors and blogs online. Kept learning, always learning, making myself doubt. I believed in Bernie Sanders, Santa, and getting an A in Brook’s English class. Oh, how naive I was. I got my first part in theatre and I put everything I had into it. Had the balls to say “no” to a stalker danger boy and kept my ground. Liked to wear plaid. Tried to fill in my eyebrows, and completely and utterly failed.

Lesson I learned: Nothing is permanent. People come and people go, and that’s ok. You are going to change, and adapt to loneliness, new people, new places. Everything changes, nothing is guaranteed, and you’re going to have to deal with that. when I still wore my retainer...

Senior Year

You never really realise how good you had it until you look back and, well, at least Donald Trump wasn’t your president.

The Look: The red and the bangs have stuck with me through thick and thin. Actually learned how to do makeup this year, results may vary. Comfortable enough with myself to wear anything I want. Still bite my nails. Still have a double chin (her name is Missy). I have an entire closet of black clothing, with really brightly patterned sneakers. I smile a whole awful lot. Boy I Thought I Was In Love With: Carrick Wilson. Then Nick Baur. (Again). At first, I cared so much about what I said to people that I stressed myself into a corner. But now I’ve stopped caring so much and just say what’s on my mind. If I don’t like you, I don’t stop myself from saying something, or vise versa. And people have noticed, they reciprocate, and I guess people really appreciate honesty. I’ve developed a coffee addiction and learned to accept that tech theatre is still theatre, but to never stop auditioning anyway. My anxiety has grown more apparent and louder, but I deal with it like I deal with everything. I don’t. I’ve begged for attention, but I’ve grown enough to know how stupid it is. I’m impulsive, I’m weird, but I don’t care about creeping people out anymore. I just don’t.

Lesson I learned: You’re allowed to think you’re a good person. You’re allowed to love yourself. You may forget, or you may fall, but it doesn’t make the fact that you are an incredible person any less true. Olathe North, it's been real. Remember me one day.

This is Skyler, signing off. Senior Issue I The Chronicle I 13
