make great rustic placemats and potted succulents bring a prairie feel to the setting. Kay has used dried eucalyptus leaves as a sustainable alternative to table confetti
Garden Kay has created a sunken BBQ terrace with reclaimed railway sleepers and secondhand paving stones. An old butchers block from Trinovante Trading doubles as a seat, and two vintage zinc planters support a foraged branch for solar lanterns to hang from
holders, waste bins or storage containers. In fact, the family home is full of curated displays that offer an insight into the people who live there; glass bottles and containers in different shapes and sizes house shells and feathers collected on family holidays, while in Finn’s bedroom, custom-made ply shelving showcases a collection of old Tintin books bought in a French market. ‘I passionately believe that vintage pieces bring a unique sense of style to a home,’ says Kay. ‘And they don’t need to cost the earth in either sense.’ JULY 2021 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 67

20. EXTEND YOUR INTERNAL SPACE With working from home set to be part of the new normal post-pandemic, now’s the time to carve out room for a permanent office space. If it’s a tight squeeze in the house, a dedicated garden studio could be the answer, or you might simply want a retreat to escape to after the working day is done. Either way, as more of us share the family home for longer periods, utilising extra space is invaluable.
GROW YOUR OWN Create a mini allotment plot with a raised planter. It’s the perfect way to get the kids growing their own fruit and veg, or for those with compact gardens – just add a tunnel cover to keep pests off your patch.
