A preposition is a word or phrase that connects a noun or pronoun in a sentence to a verb or adjective. They are typically short words that appear in front of nouns.
Example – They will come here in December. Here, the underlined word ‘in’ is the preposition. It describes when the subject ‘they’ will come.
What are the types of prepositions? Following are the types of prepositions:
1.Preposition of time 2. Preposition of place 3. Preposition of thing
Preposition of time
The link of time between the nouns and other components of a sentence like pronouns and verbs is shown by prepositions of time. Ex- in, from, to, etc.
Example – I will be in the library from 2 o’clock. Here, the underlined word ‘from’ is the preposition. It describes when the subject ‘I’ will be at the library.
Preposition of place
The link of a place between nouns and other parts of a sentence is shown by prepositions of place. Ex – at, in, by etc.

Example – We will meet at the lighthouse. Here, the underlined word ‘at’ is the preposition. It describes where the subject ‘we’ will meet.
Preposition of a thing
Prepositions of things imply that nouns and other components of the phrase have a casual relationship. Ex- for, by, with etc.
Example – I will be writing an article about climate change. Here the underlined word ‘about’ is the preposition. It describes what the subject ‘I’ will be writing about.
What are phrasal prepositions?
A phrasal preposition is a combination of two or more words that acts and operates as a preposition, rather than a prepositional phrase. Ex – Apart from, because of, etc.
Example – Ram, along with Shyam, will arrive at Varanasi by tomorrow. Here, the underlined words ‘along with’ are the preposition. It describes who the subject ‘Ram’ will be coming with.
