Kicking off in early June, the Rock am Ring (Rock in the Ring) and Rock im Park (Rock in the…duh…Park) festivals prove that Germans aren’t only about bratwurst and the Hoff. These two fests, one rocking the West and the other the South East at the same time, attracted over 150 000 people in 2008, selling out well in advance. Set on a typically-German grand scale, they feature such monsters of rock as Rage Against the Machine, 3 Doors Down, Metallica and Motorhead, as well as catering for those who love something edgier and heavier like The Black Dahlia Murder. The festivals share artists, with bands playing am Ring the one day and im Park the next and vice-versa, so neither part of Germany misses out. The twin fests have been running steadily since 1985 and promise a well-oiled and trouble-free festival experience: abounding with German beer and dozens of stages representing every facet of rock culture. ROCKING THE DAISIES SOUTH AFRICA
Rocking the Daisies is a more recent and remarkable venture. Based on the amount of potential that last year’s event displayed we cannot wait to, well, rock the daisies in early October this year as the festival celebrates its third incarnation. Modelled after international ‘green’ festivals it aims to be eco-friendly, planting trees to make up for its carbon-footprint, using recyclable materials, issuing hemp tickets and giving away free biodegradable soaps, shampoos and conditioners for those that will be rocking out for the full three days. The line-up fails to disappoint: Hog Hoggidy Hog, The Dirty Skirts and Goldfish are confirmed to play alongside a host of local acts, with a special appearance by international superstar Eagle-Eye Cherry. Between sets one can stumble over to the live comedy stage or quench one’s hunger and thirst at a multitude of healthy-food establishments such as Rafiki’s, Noodle Bar and Gourmet Burger. FUJI ROCK JAPAN
Across the Pacific we go, to the Land of the Rising Sun. Nested high up in Japanese mountains, Fuji Rock is the Mecca of Japanese music fans who stream to the Naeba Ski Resort for three days of new and old school rock acts (the fest hasn’t been anywhere near Mount Fuji since its first year but has kept the name). Here you will see current indie-rock favourites like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and The Raconteurs share the stage with such legends as Madness, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Happy Mondays and Sonic Youth. The cleanest and the greenest festival in the world, Fuji Rock offers a unique experience in tranquility mixed with the raw power of music. The stages are dotted around the picturesque mountain slopes, some hiding deep in forest groves. Like most other big festivals it contains a strong non-musical program, including Bon-Odori (traditional Japanese folk dance), Cinema Fuji (playing independent and alternative films) and a host of other activities.
