A number of pupils attending Jimmy Lawless’ birthday party at the school dwelling. Jimmy is the ‘pirate’ leaning on the cannon. Each arriving guest was welcomed aboard with a firecracker fired up in the cannon.

The school building viewed from underneath the large gum tree which seasonally shed its bark and made a mess of the grassed area in its vicinity. The trunk was too thick and the lower branches were too high to allow climbing, although one branch swung tantalising near the ground where only the taller pupils could take advantage of it.

1958

A clash of heads in a rugby game involving Brian Grut and Ian Harris resulted in teacher Pat Lawless taking the two boys into Huntly to Dr Willoughby for scalp repairs. After dropping Jimmy off at home, and on the way to do the same to Brian, Pat Lawless came across Myrtle and Phillip Watene who had come off the bike on the way home down the hill at the back of the school and were badly abraded. This saw another trip into the Doctor for treatment. After the last visit the doctor commented “This is the fourth child from Kimihia school I have treated today. The discipline out there must be good!”

Pupils living over a specified distance from school could be taxied in at the Ministry’s expense. The Watene’s and Grut’s mileage from gate to gate was just under that specified, so Dick Yates and Pat Lawless re-measured from farmhouse door to schoolroom door and found the extra required mileage to authorise a taxi service for those pupils!

® Being of the opinion that children are not capable of adequately cleaning out a school, the main building has been done during the holidays by Mr & Mrs Walker. The floor was scrubbed, all woodwork washed and cobwebs cleaned off walls and ceiling. The results were very pleasing, with old residents who attended card evenings in the building expressing their delight and claiming that they had never known the school to look so clean and tidy. June ® A number of wattles growing near the end of the prefab were cut down to enable the early morning sun to have some effect in helping to warm the classroom. July ® Mr Ron Green entertained at a social evening held in the prefab by the P.T.A. on July 31st. At the end of the following month Mr Gib Drayton and Mr Walker held a slide show. Kimihia Primary School, 1897 - 1997

The Kimihia school is circled to the left and the mining village of seven houses is arrowed just below it. In the middle distance, just over the ridge where Kimihia Road runs, is the shallow body of water of Hakanoa Lake. This lake is used for boating and yachting. The mine pit was off-limits to the children of the district, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying the wild nature of the pit edges. On summer days the heavy tyres of the earthmoving machines pounded the dry soil until a fine dust called ‘bulldust’ was generated. This had the consistency of talcum powder and provided the ultimate sensation as it flowed between the toes of the barefooted explorers. On fine days the dust coated everything in sight and the householders were compelled to keep their windows closed in a vain attempt to keep the dust from getting inside the houses.

A 1960 aerial photograph of the mine looking out towards Huntly. The total destruction of the Lake can be clearly seen as efforts are made to remove the overburden from the 30’ thick coal seams, which slope away downward to the right. This was the limit to which opencast mining was a viable concern. To remove further overburden to the north (right) would have made the removal of the coal uneconomic. In later years the coal was to be removed by returning to underground extraction - longwall mining. The dredge is seen here working in its own pond as it strips away the softer lake bed before the area is opened up for us by the bulldozers, euclids and carryalls. All overburden was dumped into what remained of the lake.

Mrs Wilson resigned and took up the position of Senior Mistress at Huntly College. She was responsible for the uplift in reading skills of her past pupils and had established a very good standard in the Infant Room. The parents made a collection towards a farewell gift. Mrs Broadhurst, from Rakaumanga, replaced Mrs Wilson in a relieving capacity. At the end of February a further £5 was spent to complete the School Committee grant from the previous year in the purchase of resource books. With this infant books and cuisinaire number sets were purchased. After a months service Mrs Broadhurst moved on to take up a position in Hamilton. She took a real interest in the school and commenced cuisinaire work in arithmetic. She strove to maintain standards in the basic subjects, particularly as a succession of relieving teachers could result in a falling off of standards. Mrs Walker gave three days service in the Infant Room pending the appointment of Miss J. A. Lumsden as relieving assistant. Mrs Walker stayed on to provide the continuity in the Junior classes for a week.

March ® Miss Lumsden started on March 6th with only the Primers while the Standard 1 students were moved into the senior building, leaving eleven primers in the Infant Room. ® On the 7th the spectacle of the court, drive and pathway being tarsealed was completed after being started by the contractors on the 5th. Two layers of metal were laid down of 1/8 inch and 1/16 inch before cold seal was applied over the top. The drive was not fully sealed. ® Wattles, barbary and blackberry were bulldozed clear of the east fence courtesy of Mr Fisher and a ‘dozer from Downer’s on the 12th. The Committee had planned to convert this into a dry grass area, with drainage being more rapid on this higher part of the hill. Mr Grut and Mr Yates along with Mr Walker repaired the east fence temporarily as it was planned to move it back later to include the new piece of ground. ® The school committee found that the ‘milk in schools’ scheme was justified based on the data received from the parents. ® The following day all the pupils were taken by Mrs Valentine in Holland’s truck to the woolshed to see the shearing. Mr John Holland had shown a real interest in the school and the children and he made the visit well worthwhile, answering questions and explaining all aspects of shearing. ® A flag pole arrived from the Education Board on March 14th. ® Miss Lumsden terminated her position as relieving assistant on Friday the 24th of March to be replaced by Mrs Marion Bogie the following Monday. Arriving on the same day as Mrs Bogie was the new Bell & Howell 16mm projector from Snapshot Ltd, Hamilton (purchased under subsidy by the PTA). April ® In early April a new iron roof was put on the prefab’, replacing the unsatisfactory aluminium one.

1961

® At a householder’s meeting on April 12th the following were elected on to the School Committee: Mr J. Fisher (Chairman), Mr B. Grut (Secretary), Mr G. White, Mr R. Yates and Mrs P. Valentine. There were only five nominations at the poorly attended meeting. ® The newly purchased film projector, subsidised by a grant of 25 pounds from the Mines Amenities Board, was shown off at the April PTA meeting with three films being shown to a good crowd. The opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mrs Wilson and to express thanks for her two very valuable years of service with the Junior school. May ® On the 2nd of May a school flag was received from the Education Board and eight days later Messrs Grut, Yates and Walker set the new flag pole in a concrete base and poured cement around the strainer posts at the main gates. The gates were reset and a stop set on the ground in cement. ® Resolved by the Committee that cocoa be supplied to the children during the winter months. July ® Messrs Grut and Yates made a new set of covers for the sandpit, while a wormery and paper cups were received from Mr Gore, the Nature Study specialist. Also during July two new hand forks and four new hand trowels were received from the Board to supplement the gardening tools. August ® On August 15th the school sports trip to Pukekapia (by private cars) resulted in Kimihia winning the rugby 21-0 and losing the basketball 2-9. ® Water from the new spouting on the infants room was found to be streaming under the building and needed to be corrected. September ® With the new projector needing some security and protection a cabinet was made by Mr B. Grut and set up in the classroom for use. The next day (September 11) the Annual general Meeting of the PTA saw the following elected: Mr Walker (chairman), Mrs Lewis, Mrs Castles, Mrs Cope, Mr Valentine, Mr Drayton, Mr Yates and Mr Holland. ® Five small shrubs, previously planted amongst the lawsoniana hedge and having been wrenched in May, were transplanted to more suitable positions on 12th ® An end of term two concert of plays, poems and songs proved of a higher standard than 1960, earning favourable comments, especially of the plays and verse speaking. ® On 17th September a “Pop-pup” sports day was held. The rugby match between fathers (Pops) and sons (Pups) resulted in a 15-12 win to the sons and was refereed by Ivan Foster. The basketball match was not possible due to the small number of girls so several games of Padder Tennis were played instead, the girls proving themselves superior.

® Competition entries were on exhibition, arranged in classes and types in the shelter shed, making quite a pleasing display. ® A Bring & Buy stall was organised by the PTA, which realised a profit of £18/19/0. Mr A. Newton ran a very popular shooting gallery in a corner of the grounds and netted 17/6d which was particularly good as shots were two a penny. ® Novelty races were run throughout the afternoon and a nail-driving competition resulted in a dead-heat in the final between Mrs Yates and Mrs Ryburn. The sign-written “Kimihia School” on the west wall of the schoolroom was a recent addition as was the sand-pit near the road fence-line. A staff-room was soon to be an addition when the school expanded to three rooms and was to be sited in the shadow of the school building. The boys’ toilet can be seen below the tall tree in the centre of this shot with the girls’ toilet hidden by the trees immediately to the right. The milk box at the main gates held the daily ration of half-pint milk bottles. The roof of the much-used shelter shed can be seen. Added on to the shelter shed was a bicycle shelter, a tool room and a coal room. The old house to the rear sat on land that was, until the mid-50’s, mined for coal as the seam sloped up from the lake and was almost exposed on the crest of the hill adjacent to the school property.

The Kimihia Mine village. The canal shown running across between the village and the mine maintenance area was the site of the original railway line out to the underground mine established in the 1890s. In the early 1950s, as the opencast areas were extended to the west, the rails were realigned to the north (shown) and the old rail bed was deepened to act as a drainage canal. This was necessary as the mine pit provided a major obstacle to the natural drainage of the area south of the lake.

Burdes, G. Chandler and R. Mather. ® An excellent muster of helpers attended to repolish furniture to be transferred to the new Kimihia School. These were R. Holland, B. Grut, D. Reid, A. Leech, I. Foster, G. White, R. Darke, J. Nash, R. Nicholson, D. Hart, I. Quigley, E. Jones, D. Bogie, N. Burdes and L. Holland. This project added £67 to the baths fund. ® On December 14th at 7:30 in the evening a large crowd attended the school’s final function for the year in the St John Ambulance Hall. Items presented by the school children were well received by parents and as special treats we had a magician’s act by Mr R. Irving and a

presentation of slides of ‘yesteryear’ by Mr Drayton. The slides showing events of previous years were most appropriate, this being the final function of Kimihia School. ® Presentations on behalf of the school children and the School Committee were made by Miss Sheryl Grut of Form 1 and Mr Ron Holland (chairman) to Mr & Mrs R. Mather. These gifts provided treasured memories for the Mathers of two very happy years at Kimihia School. ® School closed at 2pm on Friday the 10th, being the final day of the old school, it was quite an occasion. The school was well-equipped and when this was transferred to the new school it would ensure an excellent start for the new Kimihia School in February 1967. Signed - R. (Mick) Mather, Head Teacher, 16.12.66 Up until the closure at the end of 1966 the school had been used for the past 70 years as the centre of district affairs from kitchen evening to political meetings, as the area had no hall. In 1966 a new Kimihia School was started off Russell Road in Tamihana Avenue and a new bin was built at the mine where the coal train now only visited once a week. The Waikato Times reported on 15th March 1966: “A new primary school at Kimihia, Huntly, is due to be opened either in the third term of this year or at the beginning of next. “Completion date of the construction

1966

contract is set at October 23, and it is most likely the school will be opened next year. “With the opening of the new school the present Kimihia School will be closed. “Sixty children attend the present Kimihia school, and they will all attend the new school.

“The new school, which will cost £38,500, will have six classrooms, a dental room, games room and administration block. “Some of the building will be completed in Huntly brick veneer, with the rest being finished in timber. Six teachers will be teaching at the school, which will have a capacity for 230 children. “It is expected that 120 to 130 children will be drawn from the Huntly primary school to attend the new school. “The site was developed by local contractor Mr L. Masson, at a cost of £4500, and the building will be completed by John Fredrickson, another local contractor.” The old school (now three-teacher) closed at the end of 1966 and the 90 children were relocated to the new school closer into Huntly with Principal Mick Mather easing the transition by handing over to the new Principal John Lloyd for the 1967 year. On the 14th of December 1966 the pupils put on what was to be their last end-of-year concert for the parents at the ‘old school’ and the single-sheet programme is shown On May 2nd 1967 the public were informed of the fate of the grand old classroom in a Waikato Times article:

The historic Kimihia School may be moved from its present site to be used for a library at Melville School. “Although we much applaud the Huntly Jaycees’ desire to convert the building into a monument or museum to the Kimihia district, the education of our children must take precedence.” Mr K. C. M. Cockerill, general manager of the South Auckland Education Board, Hamilton, told The Times. “For some years now, no libraries have been built at primary schools. The board has been trying to get the Government to change its policy on this for some time, but without success. “So in the meantime we are using any room not suitable as a classroom for this purpose. We were delighted to see at Broadlands School near Rotorua where the old school block of 350-400 sq. ft was shifted and fitted with shelves and other library fittings by the local P.T.A. Now the board is maintaining the building. “The same thing is possible at Melville. Mr Dickie, the headmaster, noticed the old Kimihia building, and realised that it would be ideal for this purpose. “The P.T.A. has been asked to meet the cost of carrying the building and setting it up as a library. It will be ideal, as it is too small for use as an ordinary classroom.”

Library work was becoming an important subject, Mr Cockerill said, as library work of all kinds was becoming more a part of modern school procedure. The board agreed that Kimihia school would not be put up for auction, as is the normal procedure. “The board is wholeheartedly behind the move,” he said. “The project will be completed at no cost to the taxpayer, and the board will continue to maintain the building on completion of the work.” Mr P.Leather, a Huntly Jaycee, said he had hoped the old school would become a local monument and museum. “It was built in 1897 at a cost of £190, and four generations of the earlier families have passed through it,” he said. “Since the time when Kimihia was a coalmining town with farming as one of the sidelines, the school has been used as a centre for district affairs in the absence of a local hall. It has now been vacant since the beginning of the year, when the new school was occupied.”

November ® The Std 3 and 4 children from Mr Dunn’s room made a three-day visit to Maihihi on an educational tour. On the 17th the children had an unofficial opening of the baths. Karen Hartis, who was the most recent entrant, made the first plunge. December ® On the 11th the school concert and breakup ceremony were held. Awards were made to the best performed children in each class. Dux - Patricia Fransham; Runnerup - Ross Carroll. This was a splendid evening with 200 adults and 200 children in attendance. All were accommodated in the double-room. The air supply was taxed!

It was a rarity for a new school in New Zealand to open with a ready-built pool available for use by the pupils. Through fund-raising by parents and pupils of the ‘old’ school and a grant from the Government, this was made a reality . During the ‘50s consideration had been given to constructing a pool at the old site when the Kimihia lake became a swimming impossibility and swimming lessons there had to be curtailed. The mining contractors (Downer & Co.) were prepared to make their heavy earthmoving machinery available for such a purpose at that time. In November 1967 Karen Hartis became the first pupil to swim in the pool following an official opening.

At the Melville Primary School, over a period of time, the building was re-blocked, re-clad and re-roofed to a point where all that remained of the original structure were the internal timbers and so the building is no longer recognisable as the historic structure it once was.

1967 - The New School Opens

Kimihia School Opens “A new school at Kimihia, Huntly was officially opened by the Minister of Education Mr Kinsella, at 1.30 this afternoon. “The school has six classrooms, administration blocks and dental clinic. “The headmaster of the new school which has been in use since the beginning of the year, Mr J. Lloyd, said the school had a roll of about 200 pupils.”

Infant and senior pupils presented folkdances and a gymnastic group from Huntly West School gave a fine display. Sheryll Drew, the Head Prefect, presented flowers.

Mr Kinsella Speaks At School Opening HPR -

A ‘New Look’ School Huntly - Building a new school in brick was quite a departure for his department, said the Minister of education, Mr Kinsella, officially opening the new Kimihia Primary School on Saturday. The new school is built of bricks obtained from Huntly. “This is because the role here should stay at 200, or perhaps rise in the future, and because brick is quite a cheap material in Huntly,” he continued. “The trend today for for an entirely new type of school with a permanent block for the role it is thought the school will eventually have, and transportable classrooms to cope with the role when the area is developing.” “These are manufactured off the site and can be picked up and placed at another school when more accommodation is needed there. At Turangi, the whole school has been put together in this way,” said the Minister. ‘NODULES’ “In Hawkes Bay, schools are made from ‘nodules’ which are fitted together . . .” he continued. Mr Kinsella mentioned that the oneroomed school-house cost $400 in 1897, and this one was $100,000. The old school was later transferred to the Crown at a cost of $30 for the legal fees. “We first approached the Minister for a new school in 1964,” said Mr R Holland, chairman of the school committee. SWIMMING POOL “The new swimming baths will be started in a short time, and this must be one of the few schools to have enough money for this purpose before it is officially opened,” he continued. Built in a rectangle around a play and assembly area, the school comprises six classrooms, administration block and dental clinic. It has an informal play area down the hill on one side of the school. It serves a developing area.

“This is a new departure in school building,” said the Minister of Education, Mr Kinsella, opening the new Kimihia School in Russell Road on Saturday. Mr Kinsella said the Kimihia School was one of the first to be built in permanent materials. As the school population in the area was expected to remain stable at its present figure for many years, the Kimihia school had been built of Huntly brick and the buildings were permanent. Departmental policy now was to erect school buildings in the builder’s yard and transport them to the school sites. This meant that, if the school population fell, unused classrooms could be taken to an area where the population was expanding; thus saving the taxpayers’ money. This system had been used when building a school at Turangi. Mr Kinsella instanced some parts of Auckland where schools had been built some years ago to cater for a peak school population, which had since levelled, leaving several empty classrooms. Luckily these could be put to use. The first school at Kimihia had cost approximately $400 in 1897; today the cost of the new school was more than $100,000. The first teacher, Mr Maurice Priestley, had later become a school inspector and left his mark on that profession - as no doubt he had on his pupils. Mr Kinsella urged the present pupils to look after their school. It was their school and the good name of their school would be up to the people in it. Parents and committee had done a heartening amount of work toward getting swimming baths and beautifying the grounds, and the school could well become first class. Mr Kinsella then turned the key to officially open the school. He then granted all the teachers a holiday on Monday - of course the children would not come without the teachers!

1967 - The New School Opens

Official Opening of Kimihia School HPRThe head teacher, Mr Lloyd, welcomed distinguished guests, parents, children and friends to the official opening of the new Kimihia School on Saturday. Rain threatened, but luckily did not fall to spoil the function. Official guests included the Minister of education, Mr Kinsella, and Mrs Kinsella; Mr D J Carter, MP for Raglan, and Mrs Carter; Mr J Allen, Principal of Hamilton Teachers’ College, and Mrs Allen; Mr J Thomas, chairman of the South Auckland Education Board; the Mayor of Huntly, Dr E E Willoughby; the chairman of the School Committee, Mr Richard Holland, and Mrs Holland; and Mr Holland Sen., chairman of the old School Committee. Bouquets, arranged by Mrs Gill, were presented to the ladies of the official party by the head prefect of the school, Sheryll Drew. Mr R Holland welcomed all and expressed his committee’s pleasure at the fine new building. They had written to the South Auckland Education Board four or five years ago. Board members had come out and the present site had been picked. The beautiful new school had been worth waiting for. Mr Holland thanked his committee and parents. Kimihia school opened with money

for swimming baths already raised. They had not been built as the committee thought it was better to wait till the danger of frosts cracking the new concrete had passed. Mr Holland Sen. said the old committee had applied for a new school a long time ago the application had always been “put on the file.” Mr Holland recalled going to school many years ago along a tea-tree track. There was no control heating - only an old stove, which “the teacher stood in front of with an old shillelagh in her hand” - the children didn’t stay long after they reached 14. He did not think any child would want to leave the new school and hoped they’d look after it. Kimihia School was really “in the city” now. There were no houses - only a few small shacks - when he was going to school. BEAUTIFUL LAKE “We used to have a beautiful lake down there for swimming,” said Mr Holland Sen. “Progress cannot be halted and we are left with an ugly scar down there. I hope they can do something about it.” The Mayor, Dr Willoughby, welcomed all visitors on behalf of the citizens of Huntly and sympathised with the children for having to come to school on Saturday. Mr Thomas, chairman of the South Auckland Education Board, expressed his pleasure at being present at the opening of the new building. He had been “one of the gentlemen whose

elbow Mr Holland had jogged.” He had been horrified when he saw the old building and had agreed a new school was needed. It was the first one built in permanent material - Mr Kinsella didn’t give them enough money and built in the local Huntly brick. Mr Thomas expressed his appreciation of the work the headmaster and school committee

had done to get the school functioning, and wished them every success. Mr J Allen, principal of the Hamilton Teachers’ College, told the pupils why he had to go to school.

Schoolchildren provided items of interest to all at the opening of the new Kimihia School. The School Recorder Group began the proceedings with the National Anthem. Infants’ classes gave a charming folk dance - “in and out the windows.” One or two appeared to go in the wrong “window,” which, for a sympathetic audience, only added to the fun. A clever folk dancing display; a Scottish country dance was given by children from the senior school. Huntly West School gymnastic group Waikato and Auckland school champions gave a clever display in spite of the lack of space. Two songs by Messrs Yates and Reece Jones was enjoyed by all.

® Final Awards were: Jeffrey Hiriaki (Sports award), Louis Slee (Most Consistent Worker in Form 2), Donald Bogie (Dux).

September ® Mr Wilson, newly appointed school inspector to the district, made an unscheduled visit. October ® The Flower Show was duly staged and was a great success. The idea of getting the children to arrange their exhibits at school was a good one as it meant they did all the work themselves and the competition becomes fairer. November ® A series of four evenings to aid parent’s understanding of the new maths was begun. Mrs Bogie began with an explanation of ‘sets’. An excellent attendance of more than 30 parents took part enthusiastically. December ® The infants had their day when they hosted parents at a 11am activity programme. The parents, mainly mothers, then took the children to the Huntly West playground and had lunch and games with them. They returned to the school when swimming lessons were taken. ® The annual concert and break-up party was held in the Huntly Primary School assembly hall. The hall, which seats 500, was overflowing and the concert had its usual charm, mainly centred on things which did not go according to plan. ® The windup speakers were Mr Holland (committee), Mr Gill (PTA), Donald Bogie (children) and the Head Teacher. Hepatitis Outbreak at Kimihia School The Kimihia School, near Huntly, may be forced to close due to a bad outbreak of infectious hepatitis. A large number of the school’s roll of 204 has already been affected, together with a number of adults from the area. Local residents claim the cause of the disease at Kimihia is a number of defective sewers serving several new homes near the school. Huntly has its own sewerage scheme, but this area of Kimihia has not yet been connected. The headmaster of Kimihia School, Mr J Lloyd, said today that reliable figures of the number of pupils affected could not be accurately assessed, but they were considerable. Mr Lloyd said a health inspector was due to make an inspection of the area tomorrow, and he would ask the inspector if the school should be closed as a safeguard. The outbreak at Kimihia is only one in the Waikato-King Country and he is concerned at the spread of the disease among school children there. With support from the Taupo County Council, they intend pushing for hot-water hand-washing facilities in schools. And the South Auckland branch of the Parent Teacher Association recently formulated a remit on the subject to be presented at its national conference in Wellington in August. The federation would take up the matter of hepatitis with the Government departments concerned., said a spokesman, Mr W A Rush. But the general manager of the South Auckland Education Board, Mr K C M Cockerill, said in answer that the incidence of hepatitis in some schools could not be blamed on the lack of hot-water hand-washing facilities. He said the matter of hepatitis had been fully discussed with Dr Dawson, Hamilton District Medical Officer of Health. The disease could be traced to any number of causes, said Mr Cockerill, but a circular had been sent to all teachers asking them to pay strict attention to children’s hand-washing. Soap was supplied in all schools, and most had towels supplied either by individual children, or paper towels supplied by school committees.

February ® The school opened with a full staff, the same as for 1968, with the exception that Miss Sheryl Reid replaced Miss Courtney who moved to Putaruru. ® The initial roll was 199. ® Mr L Palmer, Inspector for the area, visited. ® In glorious sunshine (unusual for a Kimihia function) the annual swimming sports was run in the Domain baths. The improved standards of performance shown proved the value of having our own pool. Matai won the swimming competition. April ® An interesting display and films from the BP oil company. ® A biennial householders’ meeting was held to elect a new school committee. Chairman M Gerrand, SecretaryTreasurer E Jones, Committee Mrs A Fletcher, Messrs T Hunt, R Gill, I Tapp and B Fransham. ® The Annual General Meeting of the PTA elected the following executive officers: R Forrest (Chairman) and Mrs R Gill (Secretary-Treasurer). May ® The children ran their ‘Penny Arcade’ and cleared $27 in the hour. ® The second term started with a full staff but a dramatically decimated roll of pupils, due to a virulent outbreak of Hepatitis in the district. As this has been raging for some months now one wonders why the Health Department hasn’t taken some measure to isolate the source. Other newspaper reports on the Hepatitis outbreak. . . .

Nine Pupils Sick Nine cases of infectious hepatitis had been officially notified by pupils attending Kimihia School, said the Hamilton medical officer of health, Dr J F Dawson, today. But there were probably many more as some times the disease was not reported or medical assistance sought, he said. A very favourable report was given by the health inspector who visited the school yesterday, said Dr Dawson. Hand-washing sanitation facilities were quite satisfactory. The school had been built recently. “Pockets of hepatitis are springing up all the time, and we can only stress again the importance of proper hand-washing and personal hygiene.” He said the cause of the disease at Kimihia was not known. The Kimihia School’s headmaster, Mr J Lloyd, consulted the South Auckland Education Board yesterday, as he feared the school might have to be closed to safeguard other pupils so far not affected. But he had no further comment to make on the situation today.

Kimihia Primary School, 1897 - 1997

Diseases spread in schools Huntly - Conditions existing in schools enabled diseases to spread rapidly and easily due to close confinement of pupils, the Huntly Borough Council was told last night. In his report, the health inspector, Mr C M Turner, said no facilities for washing pupils’ hands with hot water was another factor. His report also said that 23 pupils from Kimihia School were still affected by hepatitis and were absent from classes. Mr Turner said he had visited the school and interviewed the headmaster, Mr J Lloyd. The hepatitis outbreak there was only mild and not of epidemic proportions. He said that during the past month infective hepatitis had been rife in the borough. Four cases had actually been reported. “But it would appear that doctors in Huntly are not always notifying the Health Department of hepatitis, and consequently the extent of the outbreak cannot be ascertained.” June ® The hepatitis crisis is still raging in the district and the matter has been highlighted in the newspapers and over the radio. The Health Department paid us a visit and spoke very highly of the standard of cleanliness and general attention being paid to hygiene in the school. They are still not particularly interested in taking any positive action. In the meantime there is a steady stream of new cases. July ® This year we varied the system of issuing reports in that they were sent home with the children first. The parents were then invited to a PTA meeting where they had the chance to interview teachers and discuss the children’s progress. This proved very successful with 70 parents attending. ® We are still having a steady stream of new cases of hepatitis. The Health Department has consoled us by predicting about 75% of the school eventually going down with the illness! ® A three-day inspection visit from Messrs Palmer, L Wilson and Holmes. The visit was to issue one yellow and two green reports on staff members. It involved a most thorough analysis of the school programme and its implementation. August ® Forms 1 and 2 made an educational visit to Wellington per NZ Railways. The fare was $9.50 a head and the children received a full day of VIP treatment. September ® Mrs Allen agreed to assist in the Std 3/4 area as the Board could not even supply a relieving teacher.
