WOMEN’S TENNIS POSTS ANOTHER WINNING SEASON There was much optimism surrounding the women’s tennis team entering preseason with the prospect of many top players returning for the Red Dragons. That optimism was short-lived as a few key players decided not to play in 2002 leaving fourth-year coach Ed O’Malley to juggle his lineup and look to new players to produce immediately. The squad did have a solid nucleus of three veteran players in senior Beth Muller (Fredonia, NY), junior Trudy Hudson (Hagaman, NY) and sophomore Catherine Lodico (Elmira, NY). This trio would lead the Red Dragons all fall and into the SUNYAC championships with an opportunity to win it all. The season started with three straight wins against LeMoyne, Russell Sage and eventual SUNYAC Champion, New Paltz. The New Paltz match came down to the sixth singles spot where freshman Michelle Morgenstern (Massapequa, NY) won 6-4 in the third CATHERINE LODICO set to clinch the victory for Oneonta. Oneonta suffered its first defeat of the season at Nazareth before running off five straight wins to bring their record to 8-1 with a month left in the season. During the five-match

win streak the Red Dragons recorded convincing wins over SUNYAC rivals Geneseo, Cortland and Plattsburgh. At the end of September Oneonta competed in the Rolex Regional Tournament at William Smith and came away with no champions. The only player for Oneonta to advance in any bracket was Muller who made it all the way to the final 16 of the singles draw. She won her opening match 8-5 and then won in straight sets to advance another round before being swept in straight sets to end her bid for a quarterfinal appearance. Oneonta finished the season with two wins in its final three matches to complete a 10-3 dual record which was the second time under O’Malley that the squad posted double digits in wins. At the SUNYAC championship Oneonta finished third overall with two finalists in singles and one in doubles. Both Muller and Lodico played in the finals at first and second singles respectively while Lodico and her partner, Cordea Twiggs (Latham, NY), played in the final at second doubles.
