College: A big decision Overcoming challenges is a step toward future success ARA Content Whether you are fresh out of high school, hoping to start college for the first time or thinking about returning to college, it’s not a decision that can be taken lightly. The time and money that goes into furthering your education can be daunting. However, since earning a college degree will ultimately lead you to achieve a more stable and rewarding future, you will likely not regret your decision to enroll and take your skills to the next level. Many prospective students face similar challenges when thinking about postsecondary education options. The five most common challenges and how they overcome them.: • Fear or lack of confidence. You may feel apprehensive because your past school experiences haven’t been positive. If you can identify why you haven’t succeeded in the past and identify what style of learning fits you best, you’ll be in a better position to succeed and feel more confident in college. For example, if you’ve had a hard time in a traditional classroom setting, but excel at hands-on learning, look for colleges that offer that type of training. • Lack of support. For some, family or friends may not value education enough to provide the proper support for the person heading to college. If you find yourself in this position, look for a college that offers a support system through counseling resources, free tutoring

and mechanisms to network with teachers and classmates. • Worried about paying for college. Many people entering college have little or no money saved to help pay for tuition or books. For these students this means taking out loans to help pay for their education. Before you enroll, sit down with a financial adviser or a professional at the college you want to attend to make sure you understand all of your financial obligations as well as your finance options. Knowing what your monthly payments might look like once you have earned your degree may help give you peace of mind going forward. Check with your college to see if you might be eligible for grants or scholarships. • Uncertain the investment will match the return. Many prospective students often wonder whether their hard work and money spent on college will pay off after graduation in the form of a well-paying, enjoyable job. When looking for colleges, make sure to identify an institution that is committed to helping students find employment once they graduate to add assurance to your investment. The first job after college may not include a high salary, but over time, an individual’s salary can increase significantly. • Balancing college with life’s other obligations. College is a major commitment for everyone, especially those who have family or work commitments while attending. There’s no question that finding and maintaining a life balance is challenging, but many students find a way to get it done — whether it be through flexible scheduling or by taking some courses online.

Tips for a good graduation video How to make sure family members are worth saving ARA Content A child’s graduation is a time for the whole family to celebrate. Just about every family wants those moments captured for life, but grainy, outof-focus videos sometimes even miss the graduate’s big moment on stage. Even if you’ve never picked up a camera, with a few simple tips, you can make sure the

family memories you capture are worth saving. No matter how state-of-the-art a camera is, if you don’t know how to use it, you shouldn’t start learning at the big event. “Get familiar with your equipment,” Art Institutes International Minnesota’s Ben Gottfried said. “Read the manual, test different lighting conditions. It will increase your comfort level with the camera and make for better shots.” Now that you know how to use your camera, make sure you’re in a good spot to get the right shots, Illinois Institute of Art

Academic Director for Digital Filmmaking and Video Production Ted Long said. “Get to the venue early to set up so you don’t have to use the full zoom on your camera from the back of the auditorium,” he said. Keep it steady. There’s nothing worse than getting a case of motion sickness while watching your family’s special moments. Some other tips: • Use a tripod. • Use an external microphone to capture speeches or interviews with family members about the big day.

Credit should be managed with care Financial lessons can be learned with careful card use ARA Content Young adults learn many things over the years, but there’s one lesson they shouldn’t forget before they head to college or they set off on their own — how to manage credit. We’ve all heard stories of young adults who get in way over their heads, and often the blame falls on credit card debt. They sometimes are lured by the ability to purchase coveted items, or even simply by the short-term prospect of living more comfortably. Conventional wisdom might tell you that young adults should avoid using credit cards altogether. But if used correctly, a credit card can help teach financial lessons, while helping them establish a good credit history. New credit card laws have made it a must for parents to teach these lessons to their children since those under the age of 21 must show their ability to repay their debt or will be required to have a co-applicant or cosigner on the account. Whether you are a parent who is helping your children manage a first account or a responsible young adult who is considering getting a credit card, here are a few things to

consider before you get going: • Look for a card designed for someone new to credit that offers tools to learn about money management. While parents should teach their children about how a credit card works, some card providers offer online credit card education materials that can be reviewed at any time. Some also sponsor money management lessons. • For students, look for a college credit card that offers zero liability for fraudulent purchases and text alerts to help manage and protect your account. • Young adults need to understand that credit cards are loans that need to be paid back. A great introductory lesson for them as they learn to manage their card is to use it to buy books or another necessary purchase. Even if mom and dad are paying for the items purchased, parents can use this as an example of how to build credit by using a credit card for a planned purchase that you can afford and then paying off the bill by the due date to avoid being charged interest. • Parents may wish to schedule monthly or quarterly check-ins with their young adult to discuss how the card is being used. Parents who worry that this will feel like prying too much into how their children are spending their money should focus only on whether payments are being made on time and whether the balance is kept in check, not

on what is being purchased. Once your children demonstrate responsible use, check-ins can become less frequent, eventually disappearing altogether with good credit behavior. Building credit history is one more step in the road to independence. Lenders, landlords and employers use credit reports, so a solid credit history will help when young adults need a loan to purchase a car, rent an apartment or even find a job. Learning how to manage credit wisely today will pay off tomorrow and well into the future.

• Think about what you will shoot. Get an establishing shot – a wide shot of the event that shows graduates walking in, the stage and the audience. • Don’t zoom or pan excessively, and if you do, make it slow. Jarring shots are hard to watch and even harder to edit later. • Use the rule of thirds. Think of the picture as being divided into thirds horizontally. The important action should be in the middle third. • Try to get different angles. Different family members can be stationed around the room for a variety of shots.

Job-seekers: Dress for interview success ARA Content In today’s highly competitive job market, it is imperative for candidates to be fully prepared for an interview. This includes choosing the appropriate interview attire. The idea is to project an image to a future employer that conveys a responsible, hard working and motivated worker. Nothing says that more clearly than what you choose to wear for that first impression. Some tips for dressing for the interview. • Do your homework. If you are applying for a job with a young, trendy boutique, dress in a way that the interviewer can envision you in their shop serving its clientele. • Stylish is better than funky. Employers want to see that you will fit in with their business. Too much “trendâ€? can scare a potential employer away. Good taste is more valuable than how avante-garde you can be. This is not the time to experiment.

When you walk through the door, you should be mistaken for the boss, but don’t over-dress. • Clean goes a long way. Clean, pressed khakis or dress pants are preferred. Clean, appropriate shoes and accessories are essential (use a tie if it matches the employer’s profile). No T-shirts with political satire, obscene graphics or logos. No droopy jeans or visible underwear. You should reflect the employer’s values and image. If all else fails, a basic blue or gray suit is always stylish and in good taste. • Accessories. Be frugal with jewelry — less is more. If your jewelry jingles, makes noise or can get caught on any of your clothes, leave it at home. • Keep your grooming simple. Hair should be clean and neat, and nails clean and well manicured. Chipped nail polish will not make a good impression. The applicant should care enough to

shower. Go light on makeup. Heavy eye makeup or lipstick is a no-no. • Go easy on the perfume and aftershave. There is nothing worse than causing your interviewer to have an allergic reaction. • Shoes need to be clean and in good shape. No sandals. • Color is important. Dressing for the interview also requires that you choose colors carefully. It is a useful tool in conveying a powerful message. Blue, especially navy, is a go-to color because it conveys an image of someone in control but it also conjures up calm, stability, trust, truth, confidence and security. Gray is the second most popular color for an interview. It has similar traits to blue, but also denotes sophistication. While black commands authority, it also implies drama and can make you appear unapproachable, so use it sparingly. Green indicates nature, success, wealth

and security. It is a calming color and is very relaxing. Dark green is masculine, conservative and implies wealth. Stay away from reds, oranges and yellows. Red is a powerful color and is associated with energy, passion, desire, power and aggression. Orange is similar to red in that it can stimulate strong emotions. Yellow promotes a wide range of emotions including cheer, goodwill, caution and even jealousy. For these reasons, any of these colors should be used as an accent color only. White shirts and blouses are conventional and convey cleanliness, goodness and precision. Purple and pinks are both feminine colors and should be worn with discretion, especially in fields with a strong gender bias. • When dressing for the job interview, one of the most important items to make sure you’re wearing is confidence.

Smart move: Keep your resume fresh, just in case ARA Content

Workers are always learning new skills on the job, at professional development conferences and seminars. Many of those skills can and should be a part of your updated resume. If you’re not currently looking, why take the time to spruce up an old resume? “Who knows when the next opportunity will open up? VanRiper said. She suggests taking a good look at your experience to see if you need to add any new

job responsibilities or reflect recent promotions. Have you joined any new professional organizations or been elected to a board? Polish up the skills section of your resume with any new software applications you’ve learned. And don’t forget to add any foreign languages. Add a digital link to your work in your resume. Make sure the materials are updated.

A short employment history does not mean you’re short on skills. Don’t discredit any experience that you’ve had. One final piece of advice from VanRiper: “Proofread. Proofread. Proofread. Errors are inexcusable and will cost you the job.
