Be Sure Your Summer Fun Stays Safe! LIFE VESTS. Put on a life vest whenever you’re out for a spin on the wakeboard, water skiing, tubing, or rafting down the rapids. If you fall in, the life vest will keep you afloat. HELMETS. You have to wear one when you are on your bike, rollerblades, skateboard, or scooter to protect your noggin from serious injury. REFLECTIONS. Be sure to wear reflective clothing and shoes so cars can see you easily anytime during day or when it is dark in the morning or at night. SEATBELTS. Putting on your seatbelt is the most important thing you do when you get in a car. Wear it right and tight – it may just save your life. TOO LOUD, TOO LONG. Being able to carry your tunes with you is great, but listening for hours at high volume can affect your hearing and block out noises that keep you aware of what is going on around you. BUDDY UP. Security can’t be everywhere you are, so cruising around alone can be risky. It’s safer and more fun to travel with your buds whenever you are out and about. JUST SAY “NO”. There are lots of ways to say NO. Just change the subject, or end the conversation that is making you feel pressured to do something you don’t want or shouldn’t do. SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, WRAP. SLIP on a shirt – clothing is one of the most effective protections against UV radiation. SLOP on sunscreen – sunscreens absorb, reflect or scatter most UV rays before they can harm your skin. SLAP on a hat – wear a hat with a brim wide enough to shade your face, ears, and the back of your neck. WRAP in sunglasses – they protect your eyes, your eyelids, and the delicate skin around your eyes. Safety information and tips courtesy of Okanogan County Public Health Department. Hey, Kids!

After you (and your parents) are done reading the paper, why not make something fun out of it?

Newspaper sailor hats 1. Fold the paper (or 1/2 sheet of newspaper) in half.

Step 1

Step 2

2. With the folded edge at the top, fold down each top corner to make a triangle on the top portion of the newspaper.

Step 3

3. Fold one bottom flap up. 4. You’re done — you can now color or decorate your new hat.

What else can you make out of newspaper?
