A
major kitchen area remodel gave this Omaha metro home’s main level a whole new look. Meeting years ago through their husbands, our clients and professional interior designer Beth Settles, Allied Member ASID with Interiors Joan and Associates, worked together to expand the footprint of the kitchen. The goal was to renovate the kitchen, allowing the floor plan to accommodate more cabinetry, storage and a larger island.
In order to gain some square footage in the kitchen space, the fireplace in the adjacent great room was removed. “We borrowed two feet from the great room, and that small adjustment made a huge impact on the layout possibilities in the kitchen. It allowed us to achieve space for more usable cabinetry, and a larger island,” said Settles. The challenge of a renovation creates opportunity for truly creative design solutions, and Settles finds the drastic difference between a “Before and After” so gratifying.
INTERIORSBYJOAN.COM
While the renovation wasn’t contained to the kitchen, many design details combine to give that space a truly unique look. A barrel ceiling crafted of Old Chicago brick immediately sets the space apart. Sapphire blue cabinetry, honed quartzite countertops, and an accent marble tile detail on the backsplash combine effortlessly under the statement pendant lights. Other notable design elements in the home include: natural ledger stone on the fireplace, truly unique lighting fixtures, stunning artwork, coffered ceilings with inset detailing, and gorgeous wall coverings. Our clients’ appreciation for design, and the collaboration of designer, contractor, and architect, resulted in the achievement of their dreams. Having the ability to stay in a neighborhood they love and create a home that looks and lives the way they desired by undergoing a renovation rather than a new build, was a dream come true.

Road Trips, Restaurants, and More Letter by Steve & Jeff Hinchcliff, ONYX Automotive // Photography Contributed

elcome to the first issue of ONYX Magazine. We are happy that ONYX Automotive is helping you, and your family, in your journey—whether that is down the road, across the state, or into a luxury lifestyle. That’s why we have created this publication specially for our clients. ONYX Automotive is as much an auto brand as it is a lifestyle, hence this publication will be full of lifestyle content, and ideas, for our readers. We at ONYX Automotive take pride in our team members, such as technicians and client advisors who are available to help you whenever you need. That's why we’d like to introduce you to is Genius Manager Robert Gibson. He’s a lifelong car guy, and former information technology professional who is passionate about BMWs. He also knows the ups and downs of buying a luxury vehicle because he was originally a customer. You can learn about him on page 10.
It’s fall, and in Nebraska, that means football. We know many of our customers spend their Saturdays at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln or in their living rooms with friends and family, watching the Huskers. One of the writers caught up with former player Jeremiah Sirles, who played for Nebraska from 2009-2013 before going to the pros after college. These days, he is back in Nebraska as a commentator for Husker Sports Network. Another offering Nebraska is proud to produce is steak, and we have a lot of great steakhouses right here in Omaha. One of those is Mahogany Prime, which was announced earlier this year as Best Steakhouse in Nebraska by MSN. We at ONYX Automotive think that’s a smart decision on their end—Mahogany Prime is a great place to eat a prime cut of steak and sip a fine wine. Those who like to get out and about during the cool fall weather don’t need to go far to take a journey in their ONYX Automotive vehicle. Just east of Omaha is the Loess Hills in Iowa, and this 220mile geographic interest makes for a great day trip. There is a lot of natural
beauty to be viewed during the drive, along with local wineries to try, Waubonsie State Park to explore, apple orchards in which to pick fruit, and more. Of course, ONYX Automotive has a large selection of luxury vehicles when you are ready for your next ride, and we have information for you in this issue about a couple of them. The MINI is a zippy car for those interested in a great ride for a great price—but don’t let the name fool you. Turn to the feature on a MINI to find out more. The new BMW Electric is cool, and the article on page 22 explains why. One article we want to bring to your attention is that preordering is a great option for acquiring that new car. There are some inventory constraints right now, and preordering ensures that you will get the car you want. We at ONYX Automotive are here to help each customer do just that. We hope you love the content. To advertise or be featured in this publication, contact Tom Coleman, tcoleman@onyxautomotive.com.

CAREER, FAMILY PLAY ROLES IN VEHICLE CHOICE
Rachel Skradski Luhrs' Range Rover Story by Michael Watkins // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

“I FIND PRESENTING MYSELF IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER REALLY HELPS BUILD CONFIDENCE IN THE CLIENT THAT I AM THE RIGHT AGENT FOR THE JOB. ALTHOUGH IT PROBABLY SHOULDN'T MATTER WHAT VEHICLE YOU SHOW UP IN, THE TRUTH IS THAT IT DOES.” RACHEL SKRADSKI LUHRS
A
s a real estate agent who relies heavily on transportation, Rachel Skradski Luhrs did her homework before she bought her Range Rover Sport from ONYX Automotive this year. She took the advice of a business partner who purchased a luxury vehicle from the dealership, and came in prepared and knowledgeable about the model made by Land Rover. It’s a decision she is glad to have made, and continues to love. ONYX Automotive is a full-service dealership that carries four luxury brands—BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, and MINI—new and preowned. To its clients, ONYX Automotive is synonymous with luxury and lifestyle, both important to Skradski Luhrs. “I love everything about my new car,” Skradski Luhrs said emphatically. “I wanted the white exterior and the combination interior of black and ivory, so when [Client Advisor] A.J. Anderson called and said they had one come in, I rushed over to see it. “There are so many features that I love about the vehicle, but the one that was most surprising to me was the mini cooler. I often have clients in my car, and it’s great to be able to offer them a cold beverage.” Omaha native Skradski Luhrs and husband Nic Luhrs are both real estate agents with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Ambassador Real Estate. They have been working in the industry for 12 years and expect their first child—a boy—in September.
The couple met while participating in Berkshire Hathaway's sand volleyball league, and they love living and working in the Omaha community. “We both love this community so much and are very blessed to live and work here,” she said. “The people here are truly the best, and although Omaha is growing, it really is like a small town in a big city. We have relocated many clients to Omaha, and they are blown away by how welcoming and nice everyone is here.” Skradski Luhrs said she often goes from listing to listing, and sometimes picks up clients and takes them to showings; so she leans heavily on the reliability of her vehicle, as well as its brand profile. She believes having a luxury car is important to her business and has discovered that every time she upgrades, her business follows suit. “As an agent, I typically get one shot to make a first impression, whether working with a seller or a buyer,” she said. “I take pride in always presenting myself in a professional manner. This applies to everything—from the way I dress for work, showing up early or at the latest on time, what vehicle I drive, and how I interact with my clients. “I find presenting myself in a professional manner really helps build confidence in the client that I am the right agent for the job. Although it probably shouldn't matter what vehicle you show up in, the truth is that it does.” And with the new addition to her family, Skradski Luhrs also took safety into consideration when choosing the make and model for her vehicle. “As we are preparing to welcome our little boy into the world, safety has become more important to us than ever,” she said. “When we started searching for a new car, we did consider safety ratings much more than we have in the past. The Range Rover Sport has a much higher rating than some of the other brands and models we were considering.” Visit onyxautomotive.com for more information.

A “SWISS ARMY KNIFE” FOR LUXURY Robert Gibson Compiled by Daisy Hutzell-Rodman Photography by Bill Sitzmann
O
NYX Automotive’s Genius Manager Robert Gibson recently answered a few questions for ONYX Magazine. ONYX Magazine: How long have you been at ONYX Automotive? Gibson: I joined ONYX two years ago after I retired from the information technology world. In that time, I have enjoyed learning a new industry. When I started my employment with ONYX, I spent time learning what happens on the showroom floor. I currently lead the BMW Geniuses, the Jaguar/Land Rover Product Specialists, and one other team.
ONYX Magazine: What roles have you performed at ONYX Automotive? Gibson: I couldn't have asked for a better role here at ONYX! The blending of all my interests and skills has been very exciting for me. They call me the "Swiss Army knife.” Besides leading my teams, one minute I will be entertaining customers and demonstrating new models and features, the next moment, I am working on process improvements, the next I might be cleaning the showroom… Given I was in IT, I will sometimes help people with their questions on technology. I also get to help train on trends in the auto industry, such as electrification. ONYX Magazine: Tell us a bit about your personal life.
Gibson: My wife and I enjoy spending as much time outdoors as we can. When I was younger, I lived in Moab, Utah, for a while. It gave me a great appreciation for the outdoors and being active. We currently live on an acreage with over 300 trees. In the winter months you will find us hiking or snowshoeing. Weather permitting, you will find us kayaking, mountain biking, or walking our dogs. We escape to the mountains as much as we can. I purchased a new Land Rover Defender to help facilitate all of the fun things we do. We are very proud of our three children; the oldest is married and is an electrical engineer, our middle child is a biochemical engineer, and the youngest is just finishing law school.

AN EXPERIENCE AT EVERY TABLE Mahogany Prime Makes the Cut Story by Tamsen Butler // Photography by Bill Sitzmann

J
eremy Kurland, executive general manager of Mahogany Prime Steakhouse in Omaha, didn’t know why he received dozens of texts one morning last June. “I woke up at seven in the morning to texts saying ‘congratulations!’ and I said, ‘For what?’.” Unbeknownst to Kurland, Mahogany Prime was named the Best Steakhouse in Nebraska by MSN and the news had been released that morning. Though it is known for its outstanding service and impressive menu, the reason Mahogany Prime consistently comes out on top is evident in the philosophy of its staff. “We don’t shy away from the highest quality of food,” Kurland said. “If we can’t find the best, we don’t serve it here. We consistently exceed customers’ expectations.” Opened in 2003, Mahogany Prime’s beef is sourced from a small family business in Chicago that can boast beef ranked within the top 3% of the nation in quality, according to Kurland. Though their beef is top-notch, Mahogany Prime’s menu also caters to diners who are not necessarily looking for a hearty steak for dinner. “We serve a variety of seafood items,” Kurland said. “If it’s not the very best seafood, we don’t offer it here.” The lobster escargot was one of the menu items listed by MSN as a reason for the restaurant’s top honor. “We also cater to vegetarians,” Kurland said. He knows dietary preferences can vary widely, even in an area of the country well-known for its steaks. “We know the business and we know our guests. We cater to all our guests.” Additionally, Mahogany Prime offers a special menu for customers who prefer gluten-free options.
“IF IT’S NOT THE VERY BEST SEAFOOD, WE DON’T OFFER IT HERE.” JEREMY KURLAND
“OUR WINE LIST FEATURES SOME WINES YOU WON’T FIND IN ANY OTHER RESTAURANT IN NEBRASKA. WE HAVE LOW-END WINES, AND HIGH-END WINES, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.”
Three private dining rooms of various sizes for up to 40 guests make Mahogany Prime an excellent choice for a special event. Celebrators of anniversaries, birthdays, and other special events will enjoy the scrumptious cuisine and exceptional service for which Mahogany Prime is known, Corbett said. It’s a good opportunity to enjoy fine dining in a more casual setting with a group.
MARTINA CORBETT
Corbett is excited to bring wine tastings and wine dinners back to Mahogany Prime. The dinners haven’t been offered for over two years but are making a comeback. Like many other restaurants, Mahogany Prime is now well-versed in the art of takeout. Their “Takeout Tuesday” meal is a popular choice and includes two entrées, two salads, a side offering, and a dessert.
The impressive menu is coupled with wines exclusive to Mahogany Prime. Some of their best wines are intentionally only offered to Mahogany Prime by wine distributors because of the restaurant’s stellar reputation. “Our wine list features some wines you won’t find in any other restaurant in Nebraska,” said bar manager Martina Corbett. “We have low-end wines, and high-end wines, and everything in between.” Bottles can start as low as $36 or run as high as $2000. Corbett said much thought goes into their seasonal cocktails before the drinks appear on the menu—every few months, Mahogany Prime bar managers get together to talk about ideas for seasonal cocktails. The drinks can be inspired by myriad factors, including availability of ingredients and the emotions each season invokes in the managers. Add to the menu a service experience that is second-to-none, featuring a dedicated staff with an average longevity of five years of service at Mahogany Prime. “We offer the best service in Omaha,” Corbett said. “We’re lucky to have the service team we have.” Kurland agreed, adding that they strive to “provide exemplary service at every table,” granting a special dining experience for each guest. “We have a very low turnover rate,” Kurland said. One employee has 18 years of service at the restaurant. That low turnover allows Kurland and his team to provide consistently impressive service to guests.
Mahogany Prime’s high-end food and fine dining experience does not mean the bill will inevitably be high. “Our menu doesn’t cater to any specific prices,” Kurland said. Instead, they focus on serving the best food that’s expertly prepared and served by a dedicated staff of service professionals. “We consistently exceed customer expectations,” Kurland said. With food sourced from top distributors, a carefully curated menu, and exceptional service, it is no wonder this restaurant wound up on a nationwide list of best steakhouses. Visit mahoganyprimesteakhouse.com/ locations/mahogany-omaha for more information.
The intimate two-top table in the wine cellar is perfect for an anniversary meal or other special occasion. Kurland said the table is sometimes randomly given to a couple, but it is often reserved months in advance. He suggests guests wanting to dine in the wine cellar call at least a month before their preferred date.

TALKING FOOTBALL Husker Broadcast Team Member Provides Players’ Insight Story by Brody Hilgenkamp // Photography by Aaron Babcock
T
he man who will handle sideline reporting duties for Nebraska football games this upcoming season is excited for multiple reasons. Memorial Stadium will be full of people, there’s a complete schedule of games, and he’ll have his feet on the turf again at the university that gave him so much.
14
That man is Jeremiah Sirles, a former Husker who anchored the offensive line for four seasons and put down roots in the state even after football took him to NFL stadiums around the country. Sirles spent the 2020-2021 season working on the Husker Sports Network’s preand postgame shows.
He’d developed an interest in a broadcasting career during his playing days because he enjoyed being interviewed. He even embarked on a tour of radio stations, visiting Minneapolis when it hosted Super Bowl LII. Sirles played for the Minnesota Vikings that season, when they went 13-3 and won the “Minneapolis Miracle” game against
PEOPLE TOLD HIM HE WAS GOOD AT IT, TO WHICH HE WOULD REPLY, “WELL IT’S EASY, YOU'RE JUST TALKING FOOTBALL.” Sirles co-hosted a show on Hail Varsity Radio during the offseason. He retired in 2019 due to injuries and that fall turned his attention to hosting a Hail Varsity podcast called Just My Opinion on the streaming site Twitch. People told him he was good at it, to which he would reply, “Well it’s easy, you're just talking football.” Sirles likes to focus on the X’s and O’s. When a fan is upset that the team gives up a first down on fourth-and-1, Sirles likes to highlight how the guards did a nice job moving the defensive lineman into the linebackers, who couldn’t “bubble over” to cover the A gap between the center and the guard, which left the A gap open for the half-second that allowed the running back to move the chains. Sports analysis, regardless of the medium, is a genre that is increasingly haunted by hot takes and emotion, but there is a popular subset within it that focuses on players’ and teams’ technical execution. Sirles pointed to former offensive linemen like Brian Baldinger and Geoff Schwartz, who do breakdowns on the NFL’s YouTube Channel and the podcast Geoff Schwartz Is Smarter Than You, respectively.
HE REDSHIRTED HIS FRESHMAN SEASON IN 2009 AND THEN, OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, STARTED 41 GAMES AND PLAYED IN 53, RECEIVING THE GUY CHAMBERLIN AWARD AS A SENIOR. the New Orleans Saints. He was trying to get more experience to improve his comfort level with a headset and microphone. “I just kept practicing and perfecting my craft,” he said, “and [I’m] still nowhere near perfect, but I feel like I’ve got a better grip on what it is, and how it goes, and I’m just excited to keep growing in it.”
Sirles said the expertise of former players like himself gives them credibility among fans who are used to emotion dominating their sports experience, especially among rabid fan bases like Nebraska's. “‘Here’s why it went wrong technically. Here’s the scheme, here’s what we missed. Here’s what they did well to beat our scheme.’ I think people really enjoy that kind of content,” Sirles said.
Sideline reporting tends to consist of injury updates or how coaches are directing players during timeouts, but Sirles would like to bring the X’s-andO’s dynamic into his role, as long he doesn’t step on the toes of play-by-play announcer Greg Sharpe or the color commentary of Matt Davison. Coming out of high school, Sirles chose Nebraska over Oregon and Arizona State because he thought former Husker head coach Bo Pelini and assistant coach Barney Cotton would be good mentors. He redshirted his freshman season in 2009 and then, over the next four years, started 41 games and played in 53, receiving the Guy Chamberlin Award as a senior, an award previously earned by the likes of Ndamukong Suh, Rex Burkhead, and Eric Crouch. Sirles' NFL career started with the San Diego Chargers, who signed him in 2014. He spent most of that season on the practice squad, but was active for five games and played in two. The Chargers traded him to the Vikings, where he spent three seasons, including 2017 when the Vikings beat the Saints to advance to the NFC Championship Game. After that he had stints with the Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills. Sirles, a Colorado native, and his family put down roots in Nebraska and decided to raise their family in Lincoln. He said he loved Nebraska and all it had given him, and the gratitude shows. He has been involved with Team Jack, spoken out about abuse in youth sports, held a fundraiser with fellow former Husker Spencer Long for flood victims in 2019, spoken before the state legislature in favor of name, image, and likeness rights for college athletes, and is on the board of Tyson’s Treasure Chest Foundation, an organization that makes treasure chests filled with toys, blankets, and stuffed animals for children undergoing pediatric cancer treatments. “If you put the time and the energy into your state, they’re going to give it back to you tenfold,” Sirles said.
As an example, Sirles offers former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. When Romo began his color commentary during CBS broadcasts, football fans were leery of him because his analysis was so complex. Romo, however, predicted audibles and blitzes with such astonishing accuracy that fans grew to love him. He became the network’s lead color guy and has worked two Super Bowls. “I think that the average fan is growing in a capacity to understand football on a deeper level,” Sirles said.

MAXIMUM FUN MINI Cooper S Clubman Story by Daisy Hutzell-Rodman // Photography by Bill Sitzmann
T
he words Mini Cooper cause most people think of a small vehicle. It’s the classic English car of the Swingin’ Sixties. According to miniusa.com, in 1957, engineer Alec Issigonis was tasked with creating a car that could comfortably hold four people and sip fuel while being racy. That made the car attractive to families and celebrities alike. It became a fashion statement. Every Beatle owned one, as did Steve McQueen. The millionth Mini Cooper rolled off the line in 1965, and by 1972 over 3 million Mini Coopers were on the road. New MINI Coopers have been around for less than 20 years. When they first came available, they won the “2003 North American Car of the Year Award,” determined by an independent group of automotive journalists. It is compact enough to handle narrow London roads and comfortable enough for a 6’4”, 250-lb. man. This ONYX Magazine editor took the S Clubman for a weekend of fun—fun being the operative word. The first thing we noticed was the color package on the dash display, which can be changed according to taste and mood. We chose red as the car we drove was painted the limited edition Coral Red metallic. The ambient lighting comes alive at night, with lights highlighting all the geometry of the car, from the dash to the map pockets. A full digital instrument cluster is available for all MINIs, a plus for being able to turn the radio station or look for a map quickly. Its touchscreen navigation was a good feature for ease of having a map at our hands, and the split screen was convenient for showing both the stereo and the map at one time.
The previously optional sport version of the steering wheel is now standard. This is where we found driving the MINI to be like driving a go-kart. The wheel is small, but the grips at 10 and 2 are large, making it better to realize where one’s hands should go for maximum handling. Handle it does. We took the MINI on Highway 275 through the Loess Hills of Iowa from Omaha to Glenwood, Iowa (where my husband and I reside). On first entering the highway, I put my foot on the gas and increased speed to where I thought the speed should be. Then, I looked at the speedometer—I was driving 65 mph in a 55 mph zone. This vehicle gets 0-60 in 6.9 seconds. Throughout the entire weekend, I discovered the comfortable speed was about 5-10 miles over the speed limit and backed my foot off the gas, although I thought I was barely moving. The car drove smoothly around the turns on the hilly highway, and when accelerating onto the interstate, I discovered I was driving 70 mph halfway down the on-ramp. The MINI Cooper S Clubman also has a variety of driving modes. The car always starts in mid mode which gives a blend of performance and fuel efficiency. Fuel efficiency is a big reason why I purchase any car, and the MINI offers the green mode, which regulates fuel responsiveness and adapts the climate control to maximize efficiency. As with other vehicles, the MINI offers sport mode, which allows for better cornering and increases throttle response for faster acceleration. There are four trim levels available, a relatively new feature for MINI, which is known for being customized by owners, from psychedelic color schemes to installing a V-8 engine (the latter, incidentally, is not recommended by either MINI or car enthusiasts).
“Before that, for 68 years, it was Clubman, or S Clubman, and everything else was a la carte,” said ONYX MINI Sales Manager Dave Arbaugh. “When I built cars for my inventory, I thought about what people absolutely want to have. I would pick leather seats, or a good stereo, and a customer would come in and build it. They went to trim levels in hopes of the vehicle holding its value, because banks want to have a projected value three years down the road.” The biggest plus, for us, was the visibility. The blind spot was reduced to next to nothing, making this good for those with reduced eyesight or fears of being in a smaller car. “A lot of people, when they look at it, say, ‘We want blindspot monitors,’” Arbaugh said. “Every car on the market now has a triangle in the mirror that will beep and let you know someone’s in your blind spot.” MINI, however, doesn’t offer this as an option—it’s not needed. With the sunroof and the six windows down the sides, along with the front and back windshields, we felt as though we were riding in a glass carriage. The dual back doors create a split in the back windshield that took a moment to adjust to, but within half an hour of driving, it felt natural. On the second day in the MINI, I took the vehicle to run errands. The trunk held several shopping bags and included a sunken trunk space that could be covered and a space above with a pull-out cover. This is convenient and necessary for those who don’t want others to look in and see items in the trunk. The back seats had enough room for two more adults and offered child safety features. Overall, the S Clubman is a fun vehicle that could easily be used as the family car. With a price range from $29,900 to $39,500, it is affordable for many. “The Clubman and the Countryman will compete head to head with anyone looking for a small SUV like a RAV 4 or a Kia Sportage,” Arbaugh said. THE PERFECT PURCHASE
Preordering Ensures Car Buyers Get the Exact Car they Want Story by Brody Hilgenkamp // Photography by Bill Sitzmann
T
he future of car buying is underway at ONYX Automotive.
It plays out like this: a customer walks into ONYX Automotive’s store at 150th Street and West Dodge Road looking for a new vehicle. Staff will welcome the customer and ask what car they are looking for. The second question staff ask is if the customer is aware that ONYX Automotive is a BMW Future Retail Facility, which means the consultants at ONYX Automotive will help the customer order a vehicle with the exact features, colors, and other characteristics they want. Custom ordering is where ONYX Automotive General Manager Drew Friesen believes the future is heading. He said around half of the dealer’s car sales in a given month are custom orders, but in a year or two it might be the only way ONYX Automotive sells its cars, because once someone buys a car that way, he or she will likely do it again. “It’s most likely that when these people are entering their next buying cycle, and they have to buy from us, they’ll probably go through the process of ordering again,” he said. Ordering a vehicle is a smooth and pressure-free process. If someone doesn’t find the exact car they want on ONYX Automotive’s lot, the consultant will sit down with the customer at a station that has a 55” screen and guide them through the custom ordering process on the website of one of the four brands at ONYX Automotive—BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, and MINI. The customer gets to choose all the features and colors they want and gets a virtual tour of what the car will look and feel like. ›››
18
THE BMW X7 SAV, FOR EXAMPLE, HAS 10 OPTIONS FOR UPHOLSTERY AND SIX OPTIONS FOR INTERIOR TRIM.
‹‹‹ Customers typically receive their vehicles in four to six weeks, Friesen said, but some cars, particularly Sport Activity Vehicles from BMW, can be delivered in as few as two. “Literally, next month you could have this vehicle,” Friesen said. “Most people are willing to wait 30 days for something they are really excited about.” The day the customer takes their car home is just as smooth. They have an appointment so the financing paperwork is already done and the car is clean and in a special delivery bay. ONYX Automotive staff show the customer the features of the car and how they work, and the buyer leaves familiar with their new vehicle and in a shorter amount of time. It’s a very different process from the traditional car-buying experience, when a salesman creates pressure to buy a car that day. “If you like this car and you came with the expectation of wanting to take it home, then we will gladly sell that to you,” Freisen said. “However, most people want the experience of how fun would it be ordering a car that you got to pick out the color, you got to pick out the features, and you can have it as early as four to six weeks; there’s no pressure.” Car buyers can start the custom order process in one of two ways: they can choose the features on their own at home through the automaker’s website and set ONYX Automotive as their local dealer, or go to ONYX Automotive and use the expertise of its consultants to help choose the features. Depending on the part of the car, buyers can choose 2-3, or more than a dozen, options. The BMW X7 SAV, for example, has 10 options for upholstery and six options for interior trim. Buying a custom car may seem like a luxury purchase, but anyone can do it, Friesen said. ONYX Automotive has a full range of cars available for anyone, regardless of income level. A 2022 MINI Hardtop starts around $23,000 while a MINI Cooper S Countryman All4 can run close to $40,000. BMWs start around $40,000 and run up to $80,000 while

Land Rover and Jaguar can cost up to $180,000. “You could order any one of those vehicles and have the same experience as someone that’s buying a $200,000 car would get,” Friesen said. “The difference is that a lot of people don’t know that you can do it, so we’re here trying to educate people and let them know.” Friesen went on to say, “What if we promote, and encourage, and let people know that you can come in and build the car how you want it? So instead of trying to force someone to buy something that is 75% of all their needs and wants, why don’t you come in and give 100% of their needs and wants?” Customers who preorder a vehicle get the best of both worlds when it comes to pricing. If they want to save money by not paying for, say, heated seats, they don’t have to. And ONYX Automotive is able to do financing applications on the spot when it takes orders. The terms of those applications are locked in for 90 days and if there is a better deal when the car comes in, the customer can take advantage of those as well. The same goes for loyalty and financing incentives through BMW. In addition to a quality vehicle with all the features the buyer wants, all of the vehicles come with warranties up to 50,000 miles, and BMW and MINI come with maintenance included for the first three years. “A lot of times when people are thinking about luxury, a lot of times they think of the expense of what it’s going to cost to maintain it, but those vehicles come with maintenance at no cost.” Quality service of the vehicles is extremely important for ONYX Automotive customers’ experience because of the hassle car maintenance can be for car owners. That’s why ONYX Automotive keeps 90 loaner vehicles on hand. “If you were to come in with a flat tire, we could give you a vehicle on the spot, take yours and fix it and not inconvenience you,” Friesen said. A car buyer need not scour the country looking for a car with all the exact features they want, because by the time the searching, phone calls, and paperwork are done, the car could’ve been custom ordered and in their driveway. “The idea is not to give you pressure but to be more informative, and then obviously provide options that give you what you’re looking for,” Friesen said. BMW i4 ELECTRIC SEDAN German Engineering Meets Impeccable Style Story by Kara Schweiss // Photography Contributed
B
MW’s first-ever i4 electric sedan will be reaching showrooms in early 2022, and it can’t get here soon enough, said ONYX Automotive General Sales Manager Jake Koch.
“We have received a ton of inquiries on the availability of the vehicles since BMW started taking preorders. We have multiple orders placed already, and it seems like the interest is only beginning,” he said. “I myself cannot wait to get behind the wheel of BMW’s ‘Tesla killer.’” Based on BMW’s 3-series, the i4 is expected to compete against other midsize EV sedans, especially Tesla’s Model 3, Koch explained, and that means both high performance and gorgeous styling. ›››

BASED ON BMW’S 3-SERIES, THE i4 IS EXPECTED TO COMPETE AGAINST OTHER MID-SIZE EV SEDANS.
THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO BE EXCITED ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO THIS VEHICLE.
‹‹‹ “I love the i4’s dramatic roofline. It’s a very sleek but aggressively styled vehicle,” he said. “The M50 version will provide all-wheel drive and produce 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque. The charging time is very impressive. It utilizes an 81.5-kWh battery that will have a 200-kilowatt charging capacity and can add an extra 90 miles of range in only 10 minutes.” The eDrive40 version has a rearmounted electric motor that generates 335 horsepower, and the M50 adds a front motor that boosts it to the aforementioned 536 total horsepower.
The eDrive40’s estimated driving range is 300 miles, while the all-wheel-drive M50 yields around 240 miles. Every BMW i4 comes equipped with the new Flexible Fast Charger, a portable device compatible with any 120V or 240V outlet. BMW Charging, a new, comprehensive charging program for BMW electrified vehicles, offers tailored solutions for both home and public charging, including the BMW Wallbox for faster charging at home. And that’s not all, Koch added. “There are so many things to be excited about when it comes to this vehicle. I love that it will utilize iDrive 8. The vehicle will operate through a 14.9-inch touchscreen that’s integrated with a 12.3inch, all-digital instrument panel. It will have a very large, curved display on the dash,” he said. “The vehicle will also have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 5G mobile capability.”
BMWs are known for superior handling. The automaker said that the i4 fourdoor coupe is built with its distinctive near-perfect weight distribution and low center of gravity, and that an adaptive M-chassis, variable sport steering, and a fine-tuned suspension ensure precision handling for this high-performance electric vehicle. The i4 models feature elongated, coupelike exteriors on a long wheelbase, creating an elegant profile for this fourdoor electric luxury car, and the cabin will offer spacious seating for five and its usual rich interior options. It will also have a variety of standard and optional driver-assistance technology such as forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, standard lanedeparture warning and lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology.
BMW currently offers a competitive warranty that includes one of the better complimentary maintenance periods, and its battery components are expected to also be covered, likely for eight years or 100,000 miles. “We are very excited for the next phase of BMW’s EV lineup,” Koch said. “When German engineering meets impeccable styling, the result is a finely crafted vehicle that will lead the market in performance luxury.” Visit onyxautomotive.com for more information.

ROAD TRIP
TOURING A SPECIAL PART OF EARTH Iowa’s Loess Hills National Scenic Byway Story by Michael Watkins // Photography by Bill Sitzmann
A
sunny fall weekend is a perfect time to cruise the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway by vehicle and foot, making numerous stops at overlooks, parks, and unique sites along the way. “You don’t feel like you’re in Iowa when you visit the loess hills,” said Becca Castle, byways coordinator with Golden Hills Resource Conservation and Development. She puts together trips for visitors to the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway. “Iowa tends to be flat and known for (soy)beans and corn, but you feel transformed when you’re in the loess hills.” The loess hills in Iowa run north of Sioux City to just south of Hamburg. There are only two places on Earth that can boast loess hills—the other is southwest of Beijing, China. Castle identified several scenically breathtaking and easily accessible stops over the 220 miles of the main Loess Hills National Scenic Byway route during any visit. The route takes drivers through Plymouth, Woodbury, Monona, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Mills, and Fremont counties and can be done as a weekend adventure.

“YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU’RE IN IOWA WHEN YOU VISIT THE LOESS HILLS.” BECCA CASTLE
Located about 130 miles north and east of ONYX Automotive—or 122 miles north of Council Bluffs—Akron, Iowa, is the northern tip of the byway. The hills may not look like much at that point, but driving along Highway 12, road trippers can encounter a Loess Hills Interpretive Center, which features exhibits in a former one-room schoolhouse. Drivers will enter Woodbury County on Highway 12 and pass through western Sioux City before the byway joins I-29 at Exit 151 and travels south for 10 miles along the Missouri River. Woodbury is an ideal place for people to stop and look around, as this county includes two conservation areas, a nature center, forest preserve, and state park. This county also includes Sioux City, which is the fourth largest city in Iowa and a perfect spot to grab a bite to eat or a drink.
About 30 miles south of Woodbury County is Monona County, noted for the Turin Man Archeological Site, where 6,000-year-old human remains were found in 1955. This county is entered from County Road L12 and includes a state forest, state park, nature preserve, and woodlands. Monona offers three loops for the ultimate scenic experience. Harrison County is entered from Iowa Highway 183 and passes through Pisgah. Murray Hill Scenic Overlook, located west of Pisgah, offers a panoramic view of the Missouri River Valley. ›››

“THERE’S SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO, HITCHCOCK NATURE THAT YOU CAN’T REALLY GET THE CENTER INFULL POTTAWATTAMIE EXPERIENCE IN A DAY.”
COUNTY IS A GREAT PLACE TO GET OUT AND EXPLORE IOWA’S LOESS HILLS.
‹‹‹ “This is one of the most picturesque locations in the loess hills and offers great opportunities for photography,” Castle said. “The overlook offers views of the valley and Missouri River in all directions.” This is the heart of the loess hills, and the view here is unlike anywhere else in Iowa.
On the grounds outside, an interpretive garden is made up of native prairie plants and flowers, along with a patio area for picnicking and relaxing. A handicap-accessible boardwalk to an observation desk offers beautiful views of the park and the surrounding flora and fauna.
About 25 miles north of Hitchcock Nature Center is Brent’s Trail in Harrison County, which boasts 13 miles of scenic pathways that venture through the Loess Hills State Forest.
The 45-foot observation tower maximizes the visit with a unique aerial view of the Loess Hills and adjacent landforms.
The eight-mile elevated hiking trail goes to the top of the bluffs and provides a great vantage point that offers miles of viewing pleasure. It connects Harrison County Conservation’s Murray Hill Scenic Overlook and GleasonHubel Wildlife Area via the Loess Hills State Forest. Those who don’t want to spend the whole day on the road (but why not?) can start in the Pottawattamie County section, which passes under I-880 at exit 21 and is 36 miles from ONYX Automotive. Hitchcock Nature Center in Pottawattamie County is a great place to get out and explore Iowa’s loess hills.
28
Hitchcock Nature Center also has a scenic alternate loop. Other places to visit are two parks and a preserve in Council Bluffs. Those who have been traveling for a while, or need a bite to eat before heading out on the trail, can find plenty in the city of Council Bluffs. Mills County is entered from County Road L35 and is home to the the Pony Creek and Waubonsie Excursion Loops. The county includes two parks, a prairie preserve, and an archaeological state preserve. Road trippers can end their day in Fremont County, which is entered on U.S. 275 and includes two loops. Those wanting to camp will find plenty of options at Waubonsie State Park.
Castle recommends visiting the overlook at Waubonsie State Park. Located north of Hamburg, the park is not only located on the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway but also the Lewis & Clark Historical Trail. The scenic overlook provides one of the rarest vistas of the loess hills and the Missouri River bottom. The scenically rugged trail is highlighted by steep slopes and ridgetops through Murray Hill, Loess Hills State Forest, and Gleason-Hubel Wildlife Management Area. While Castle said it’s possible to visit much of the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway in a single day-trip, she recommends taking two or three days to fully experience everything it has to offer. “I recommend visiting for basic details and information,” she said. “There’s so much to see and do, that you can’t really get the full experience in a day.” Go to visitloesshills.org for more information about the byway, and visit onyxautomotive.com to take this trip in style in a vehicle such as the Jaguar pictured here.
