y parent s had a green-andyellow swing set in their backyard when I was a child. It consisted of two swings, a slide, and a seesaw.

My younger sister and I spent hours playing on it, swinging high into the air and sliding down the metal slide. My favorite part, however, was the top bar.

I used it as a gymnastics bar, flipping around and around the top of the swing set until I hurled myself into the grass.

Lexi Zeiss probably understands the pure joy of flying off the uneven bars. Zeiss has been doing so since a young age. These days, she is a Senior Elite gymnast, eligible to compete at the American Cup and the U.S. Championships. She is also a top student at Westside High School, taking honors courses between training. How she achieved this level of skill in gymnastics is the subject of our Super Student article.

Loc al musician and ac tor Billy McGuigan learned as a middle-school student that the ar ts, par ticularly theater arts, are important professions, and he and former Omaha Community Playhouse Artistic Director Kimberly Faith Hickman have created the McGuigan Arts Academy.

Our other feature builds on the first, seeking to inform readers about careers in theater arts. Theater is a collaborative occupation that involves everything from project management to public speaking. Students who exceled in local high school theater programs work in a variety of careers, from broadcasting to owning a business. The article discusses the professional skills these students gained through the performing arts There’s a lot of great articles in this issue. I hope you enjoy them all.

his 2020-21 school year has seen significant challenges in schools across the nation related to the pandemic. The Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Omaha have prioritized safety protocols, allowing our schools to continue with in-person instruction or hybrid instructional models for a majority of the year.

There are over 18,500 students and 1,400 teachers growing every day in faith, academics, and service. Omaha natives are familiar with the long tradition of excellence in our schools; evidence can be seen in our ACT scores that are above national average across all demographics and in our 99% graduation rate.

• We strive toward being accessible and affordable for every Nebraskan, so that we can increase the number of students from historically underserved populations— children in poverty, non-English speaking families, and students with diagnosed learning disabilities. The academic programming and support services in our schools continues to grow in order to accommodate even more students.

• One third of our Metro elementary schools participate in one of the largest, privateschool Blended Learning initiatives in the United States, impacting more than 3,500 students. Since implementation, 20% of the students using the program for five months who had been below grade level at initial placement have moved up to grade level, and 5% of the students who had been at grade level at initial placement have graduated to above grade level.

The Omaha Catholic School Consortium opened the Dual Language Academy in 2018-2019 and has now outgrown its original location in South Omaha. The DLA will be expanding into additional classrooms at St. Joan of Arc, providing for children age 3 through third grade. Dual language students can continue their education through eighth grade.

ver the course of the last year, the adaptability of our educational system has been tested. All involved have been asked to adjust to teaching and learning in new ways, and the interdependence between school and home has been magnified like never before. Through it all, our teachers were creative and hard-working, our students resilient and engaged, and our parents exceptionally supportive and involved. Together, everyone was truly amazing in working together to navigate remote learning, in-person learning, and the many protocols that made schools a safe place during a pandemic.

In 2020-2021, Elkhorn Public Schools served over 10,700 students, an enrollment increase of 5%, and marked the 34th consecutive year of growth for the district.

EPS staff has embraced this progress and continues to believe in the potential of each student, while also focusing on maintaining a sense of community for all.

Regardless of the disruption the pandemic caused, EPS is grateful for another year of continued grow th, outstanding achievement, and community partnership. It’s these facets that make our Elkhorn school community a great place to live, learn, and grow as we continue to be dedicated to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and shaping them into responsible, lifelong learners. ometimes the moment defines us.

The past year will always be remembered for the pandemic. Sometimes we define the moment. We are making this year about getting better, and then about getting stronger.

The pandemic is still with us and will be for some time. But we are already shifting into a recovery mode.

There are three steps. The first is to gather data and define the learning gaps.

The second is to determine what we need to do to close the gaps. While this will be unique for each child, we know it will always be about increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of learning. Our last step is determining the resources we need to do this work.

All three steps are already well underway. We are excited to help our students find a positive way to define this year for themselves.

ore than ever, this school year demonstrated the vital role public schools play in our community. I am immensely grateful to our students, staff, and families who rose to meet every challenge we faced, together.

Throughout this school year, teachers innovated to engage students remotely.

Operations staff coordinated our rigorous health and safety efforts, allowing for a responsible return to in-person learning. Our nutrition services team prepared hundreds of thousands of meals for students throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Looking forward, our long-term plan to address unfinished teaching and learning from the pandemic will organize many layers of support for students. As you read this edition, the work includes additional summer school opportunities across our district.

Even as we focused on a thoughtful, coordinated response to the pandemic, our district forged ahead to improve education for the students we serve. Construction continues on five new schools—two elementary, one middle, and two high schools. Improvements and renovations are underway throughout our district, thanks to the voters who approved our 2018 Bond Program. Following months of review, engagement, and planning aligned with our Strategic Plan of Action, our district introduced the Omaha Public Schools College & Career Academies and Pathways, designed to better engage students in classroom learning and connect them with high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand jobs after graduation and post-secondary education.

Though many things look different compared to this time last year, our commitment to students remains unchanged. More than ever, we thank our families for their essential partnership to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life.

very day, educators in Westside Community Schools and throughout all of Nebraska wake up with a unified mission: to nurture, teach, and support children to make their lives better. Schools do so much more than just teach reading, math, science, and other academic subjects. We are in the opportunity business, and it is our duty to help our students learn as much as they can about academics, teamwork, inclusion, kindness, work ethic, and perseverance while providing them with endless opportunities to gain confidence and proficiency in numerous areas.

I believe the 2021-2022 school year will be the most important school year in the history of our school district and state. We will need to continue to overcome the many adversities that COVID-19 presented. We will need to continue to forge ahead and make sure our students have the resources and support they need to thrive academically and socially/emotionally. The pandemic has been extremely difficult and has negatively impacted many students and their families in a variety of ways. Schools are a big part of filling in the gaps and helping those in extra need, but we need help from our amazing community as well.

As an educator, husband, son, brother, parent, and now grandparent, I know everyone reading this can help our entire city as we move forward. I hope we all look to find more common ground and less battle ground as a society. We have labels and barriers that keep us apart: Republicans, Democrats, skin color, religion, gender, rich, poor, short, tall, skinny, fat…the labels and dividers go on.

We can: do better if we appreciate and support those who are different from us; do better if we lead by example, and teach our children lessons that will last a lifetime; and improve all lives overall. We can do better, and we must. Our children are watching and learning from us.

Using Springer as their model, they star ted shaping the classes for their nascent academy. They devised classes for all ages, from family classes involving the really young to elementary ages on up to adults.

The academy is housed in a bay at Countr yside Village, a unique space that can be rearranged to suit the needs of each class.

“What’s important to us is that all of the artistic options are available in one safe place,” McGuigan said.

The first classes held in the space were spring break camps and private lessons.

They covered topics such as improvisation, dance, guitar lessons, and puppetry, and they were taught by the artists in McGuigan’s Rave On Productions, as well as Hickman.

This summer, camp options will expand to include technical aspects of theater, like directing.

“I’m excited that we can contribute to helping develop people who don’t want to be on the stage,” Hickman said.

Students who attend class at McGuigan Ar ts Academy will get the chance to showcase what they learn. Photography students will have an exhibit, while students of theater will apply what they’ve learned to helping actual performances

by Rave On Productions.

McGuigan and Hickman are excited about The Omaha Series, a set of shows held at various nontraditional venues for theatrical productions. They’ll offer an outlet for students to show off what they’ve learned.

Maybe, just maybe, that single outlet is all it takes.

“That little spark? You can take that little spark and it will be there the rest of your life,” McGuigan said.

High School Theater REHEARSAL FOR REAL-LIFE CAREERS

T

heater is “project management at its absolute best,” said Robyn Baker, who teaches drama at Millard South High School. She said that experience in high school can lead to a variety of viable career options.

It ’s a sentiment echoed by Jef f Nienhueser, who serves as director of Papillion-La Vista South High School’s drama department.

“I think theater is such a great way for kids to explore so many things,” Nienhueser said. “Theater can teach, theater can entertain, and theater can be a lot of different things. That’s the wonderful thing about theater: there’s something for everyone.”

Over the years, Nienhueser has seen some of his drama students go on to work in theater, but he’s seen far more take the skills they learned in class or stage productions and apply them to other sectors.

“One of the life skills theater teaches kids is that they have to learn to work with everyone. I talk a lot about that. One of the lessons everyone has to learn is how to work with people,” he said. “Of course, it also teaches them basic communication skills, how to collaborate, group thinking, and problem-solving.”

Adrian Whitsett, a 1998 Papillion-La Vista High School graduate, is one of Nienhueser’s former drama students.

He’s now a reporter/anchor for WCPO in Cincinnati, but Omahans remember him as part of KETV’s broadcast news team from 2008 to 2015.

Whitsett said his high-school stage experience taught him to be comfortable in front of people and learn to block out distractions, which serves him especially well in field reporting.

Nienhueser teaches drama classes each period, plus oversees an all-school musical, an all-school play, and several studentdirected one-acts each year. This spring the school will stage the classic show Sound of Music. He is in his last semester of a 37-year career in drama education. Nienhueser taught in McCook, Nebraska, before coming to Papillion-La Vista High School, and in 2003 (the school’s opening year) he joined Papillion-La Vista South High School and started its Titan Theatre. In 2013, Nienhueser was named to the national Educational Theatre Association Hall of Fame.

“As it’s gone on over the years, especially in bigger schools, [theater has] become a staple of school culture,” he said, adding that the Papillion-La Vista school district has been “amazingly supportive” of the arts.

Baker has also seen the theater program grow in her district over her 26-year career.

“Millard South has a full range of performance and technical theater classes, and we’ve woven in some business management as well,” she said. “Millard South was one of the first schools to pilot the theater tech apprenticeship program with Metro Community College and the Omaha Community Playhouse way back in 1995.

“People think it’s ‘just acting,’ but the industry is so wide and broad,” she said.

“We’ve had so many alumni who’ve not only have gone on to acting careers, but also are producers, filmmakers, voice artists, animation artists, and designing and running the technical projections and robotic special effects for national touring shows.”

Whitsett said performing arts students in his day were seen as “nerds, for lack of a better word,” but are regarded much differently today. “I think we were ahead of our time and we took our lumps and the ridicule because it was something we enjoyed doing. I’m better off for it.”

Baker said drama instruction is especially valuable in today’s world of social media posts, text messages, and other short-form communication.

“In the theater classes, kids put their phones away,” Baker said. “They’re in the moment and they’re invested,” she said. “In the times we’re in, I see students who need the arts more than ever.”

S

OME FAMILIES enjoy solving puzzles, watching movies, or hiking.

The Habermans are all about sports—playing, watching, and discussing them.

Justin Haberman is a physical education teacher and has been a part of Westside High School’s track, football, and wrestling coaching staffs for the last 18 years. He recently took over the head coaching position for the track team.

His wife, Amy Haberman, works for Ashfield Health Care, where she serves as a nurse educator. According to Brandi Paul, the director of communications at Westside Schools, she is also her family’s biggest cheerleader.

Their three children—Cade, 18; Cole, 17; and Chloe, 14—all play on Westside teams. As in, each child plays on more than one.

Cade is a Division I football recruit, state silver medalist wrestler, and throws shot put and discus (he is a state qualifier in discus) on the track team. Paul said he is one of Westside’s only 12-time letter winners, meaning he has been a varsity athlete in all three sports for all four years of high school.

“He says he’s a three-time state qualifier,” Justin said. “He will be a four-time state qualifier...He’s not one to toot his own horn, but Dad will.” Dad was right. Cade qualified for the fourth time and competed in the 2021 NSAA state wrestling championships in February. He finished his high school wrestling career as a three-time medalist, winning two silvers and a bronze.

Not to be outdone, Cole is a state champion football player, a three-time qualifier for state, and is set to break Westside’s wrestling record for wins and pins next year, a record Cade currently holds. He won a silver medal at the 2021 state championship.

The youngest Warrior, Chloe, isn’t content with letting her brothers have all the fun.

Paul said she is a Westside softball and basketball player who is showing promise on the field and the court.

The family’s dedication to supporting their Westside teams was evident during their interview, which took place over Zoom. The parents, oldest son Cade, and, later, younger son Cole, crowded around a screen in a coaching office of the school, as they were in the middle of watching a basketball game.

“Our whole life has revolved around sports since me and Amy first met,” Justin said. “I was playing college football [at Dana College in Blair] and she was taking photos on the sideline.”

Amy was there to photograph her brother, who also played on the team.

“I’ll never forget, I saw her out there, and I said, ‘Who’s the cute blonde?’” Justin said.

“And her brother’s standing next to me and said, ‘She doesn’t like your type.’”

Despite her brother’s declaration, the two ended up together.

Whether he was wrong or Amy simply decided to make an exception for this particular guy, the result of their relationship is a talented, loving family.

Cole, who was identified as the “class clown” of the family, was candid in talking about his love and admiration for his family members.

He expressed how he looks up to his brother and father, mentioning that he especially likes to hear stories of his dad’s college days.

As for his mom, “She does everything for me…she’s always there when I need her,” quickly adding “Same with my dad.”

Make no mistake, though. Like in all things sports, there is some rivalry.

“There’s lots of competition between these two,” Amy said. “Well, actually, in our whole house. Competition drives our household, which sometimes gets a little intense. But it’s always good.”

Despite that, they are eager to extol the virtues of the others. Cole saved perhaps his highest praise for Chloe.

“You can’t forget Chloe,” he said. “Chloe’s kind of the glue of the family. I mean, she’s me and Cade combined. She’s funny, she’s smart, she’s athletic…I just see a lot of potential in Chloe.”

That closeness has likely helped the family get through this last year. While the unpredictability of the pandemic disrupted many lives, the Habermans tried to take it all in stride.

Justin said Amy was on top of getting the family on the right track from the beginning.

“My wife did a tremendous job when it was all going down,” he said. “We’ve done a really good job of trying to live our [lives] as masked-up as possible. Yet we still want our kids to live a normal life and to be able to participate in sports, so we tried our best to just keep our family safe.”

Amy added that football season was especially stressful. ”We knew Westside had such a good team [in] this 2021 class,” she said, referring to the four Division I recruits from the team. “We knew they had a really good chance at winning state, and it just felt like you were holding your breath every week.”

That tension remains, affecting not only the family’s current situation, but their futures as well.

Cade plans to attend Northern Illinois University in the fall, where he is committed to playing football while studying pre-law. It was a decision that wasn’t made easily.

“Double A recruiting has been shut down since about last January, I believe, and I haven’t been able to see any campuses during my recruiting process,” Cade said.

Fortunately, his dad was able to drive him to DeKalb, Illinois, to take a look around and get a feel for the campus and the city.

“I’ll tell ya, that’s the one thing as a dad…I was just talking to [football players] Avante Dickerson and Koby Bretz [about this], and the bad part is, these 2021 kids have been cheated out of the experience of recruiting,” Justin said. “They’re committing to schools they’ve never been to, which is just absolutely crazy.” Of course, he said, you also want them safe and healthy.

Hopefully, things will be easier for the younger Habermans. Cole plans on wrestling in college, and Chloe also plans to continue playing sports at whatever college she chooses.

“As a teacher, you just want these kids to live their normal lives,” Justin said.“And I believe my wife and family, and the administration…have done tremendously well.”

“For over 20 years, I have wanted to be a high school counselor,” she said. “I love… high school students.”

When a health crisis threatened to derail her plan to follow that passion, McCracken refused to let that happen.

The Lincoln native earned a postbaccalaureate degree in elementary education at University of Nebraska-Lincoln and worked as a Student Involvement Technician and Family Facilitator in Lincoln and Millard public schools, respectively, and at College of St. Mary, before going back to school in 2019 to pursue a master’s in school counseling at University of Nebraska at Omaha. Then, in May 2020, McCracken accepted a high school counselor position at Burke High School and began working in mid-August.

A few days into her “dream job,” she had a medical episode that disrupted her life dramatically. “I was at work in my office typing an email and looking at the screen, and all of the sudden it was just gibberish,” McCracken said. She said her right hand was obviously not working correctly, she panicked for a moment, then sought the help of her colleagues. “I thought, ‘something is wrong. I’m having a stroke or having a seizure.’” Her partner was called and the counselor was rushed to the emergency room.

McCracken’s devastating diagnosis came the same day via a video consult with a neurologist: an MRI revealed she had a brain tumor, and the mass was pressing on the motor skills portion of her brain, causing a seizure.

Lexi’s next week brought even more excitement. She qualified as a Senior Elite on Jan. 22, 2021, at the Biles International Invitational and Elite Qualifier in Houston, Texas. The national team is made up of qualified Senior Elites. Lexi will likely be one of the youngest people on the mat this year. Because she was born in 2005, she qualifies for the 16-andup division, but will not turn 16 until Nov. 4.

A typical weekday day for Lexi means being awake at 6:45 a.m. and at school by 7:30 a.m. She attends two classes at Westside High—honors math and honors English—then goes home for lunch and leaves the house for gymnastics training. She finishes training around 8 p.m. and goes to bed by 9:30 p.m. She spends her Saturdays in the gym.

Her fellow gymnasts are all homeschooled, but Jess and Dana want Lexi to be herself first and a gymnast second. Four years ago, they approached thensuperintendent Blane McCann, and worked out a half-day schedule for Lexi, attending morning classes in person and afternoon classes online. Mike Lucas has continued with this plan.

“They are such a valuable part of this team,” Dana said of the Westside staff. Lexi, specifically, wanted to thank her teammates and her school for their support.

“She is the only Elite gymnast I know that doesn’t homeschool, and Westside School District made that possible. I’m thrilled that she gets to keep going to school, maintaining those friendships, and be a normal kid every day,” Green said.

This “normal kid” believes anyone can achieve their dreams: “Work hard every day and great things will happen.”
