Mayor Jean Stothert FACE OF OMAHA

CITY OF OMAHA

The momentum we have in Omaha is undeniable, and there’s more to come!

Heartland of America Park, Lewis and Clark Landing, and the Gene Leahy Mall complete the redevelopment of our riverfront parks, creating the centerpiece of a reimagined business, entertainment, and residential district in downtown Omaha.

The Kiewit Luminarium is open—a place for big thinking, and what-if ideas—not only to students and teachers, but for the curious, creative, and inspired.

Omaha Performing Arts live concert venue, Steelhouse Omaha, is bringing popular performers to Omaha.

When I first visited Omaha 30 years ago, there was no CHI Health Center, no Charles Schwab Stadium, Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, Holland Performing Arts Center, Gallup University, or String of Pearls along Abbott Drive.

Now, we have Mutual of Omaha’s corporate headquarters under construction and a new downtown library, the Capitol District, Builder’s District, Millwork Commons, The Mercantile, Blackstone, and new facilities and programs at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Every one of these developments impacts our great quality of life, unique civic and educational resources, open public spaces, and a culture of design excellence—all part of our promising vision for Omaha to be a place of innovation, education, entertainment, and entrepreneurship.

We will attract new convention and tourism business, new events, and new residents and talent.

We have come a long way. The Face of Omaha is changing. We are creating a new, exciting future for our city, one that will make Omaha a destination for visitors and make our citizens proud.

CONTENTS PUBLISHER Table of From the

The f irst edition of FACES of Omaha was published in 2016 to introduce the “faces” of local industry leaders, and it’s among my favorites of the many publications we produce each year.

What makes FACES of Omaha™ (now in its eighth edition) exclusive is that only one individual and company per business category is invited to participate—all premier leaders in their respective fields. My sales team spent considerable time cultivating this list to ensure that we showcase only those companies and industries that demonstrate the highest quality standards and professionalism in their area of business, as recorded and testified in the following pages.

The search is on for FACES of Omaha 2024. I encourage the public, and the business community, to direct us toward the “face” of any metro-area company worthy of the title. Call 402.884.2000 to reach one of our team members.

Each page reveals that Omaha is an exceptional place for business, ripe with talented and determined individuals. Some highlight teamwork; others focus on continued innovation. Some represent area trailblazers; others have a storied, far-reaching past. Each page invites readers to probe and appreciate the brilliant minds behind these “faces” of Omaha’s leading businesses.

It takes a truly collaborative team to produce a book of this quality, and their “faces” have earned a snapshot, too—the salespeople who assessed the categories and assisted clients, the photographers who captured the essence of each business, the editors who reviewed the copy, and the designers who made each page shine.

Pat and Tom Corrigan BANKING ACCESSBANK

When we opened in 2007, we had a simple vision—to be Omaha’s premier community-focused bank,” recalled Pat Corrigan, Chairman and CEO of Access Bank. “The support from our loyal customers and shareholders has helped us bring our vision to life and achieve so much

more than we thought possible.”

Access Bank’s community focus was apparent when employees put in long hours to help local businesses obtain PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) funding to ensure their survival during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many business owners struggled to get the help they needed, Access Bank rose to the occasion.

With a goal of meeting the needs of business owners, Access Bank began with one location and a dozen employees. Today, it has seven branches and more than 130 employees.

“While we’re proud of how we’ve grown since our early years, we’re even more excited about where we’re going,” said Tom Corrigan, the bank’s president. “Our biggest goal in the future is to continue being here to support our clients’ dreams.”

Bill and Colleen Barstow MOVIE THEATERS ACX

“Our goal is to create a preeminent hospitality and entertainment company in the Midwest.”

“We have been lucky enough to have gotten our foothold with multiple concepts in Omaha that stretch us from our pure theatrical roots to a fullfledged food and beverage/hospitality company,” he said. “We want to bring a wide range of premium, best-in-class experiences to our guests.”

ACX Cinemas’ newest concept, a luxury entertainment center opening this year in Milwaukee, features six movie screens—plus games, bowling, and

Detroit-style pizza along with selection of beverages, including premium cocktails and craft beer.

“It’s that full entertainment experience that now encompasses more than just movies,” Barstow said. “That can be a great night out at one of our fantastic restaurants listening to live music; bowling and games; or our signature brand of the big-screen experience

Tim and Megan Addison SPORTS BAR

ADDY’S SPORTS BAR & GRILL

Strength in family,” is how owners Tim and Megan Addison of Addy’s Sports Bar and Grill describe how their restaurants persevered over the uncertainties of the last few years.

“A little bit of luck, hard work, and family is what got us through. Nowadays, when so many restaurants are corporate or have multiple investors, it’s extremely difficult for the smaller businesses to compete. We just have to keep fighting everyday,” Tim said.

Family isn’t just blood, it’s who has your back—and Tim and Megan have each other’s and their team’s. Addy’s employs over 200 dedicated employees toward the business’s success.

“Every employee is equally as valuable as the other. We couldn’t function without everyone playing their role,” Megan affirmed.

It’s not unusual to see Tim and Megan helping out at the restaurants, or enjoying a night out at one of the establishments with their eldest daughter Ava, who’s recently joined her parents—and the rest of the Addy’s family—in supporting the local business.

Dr. Melissa Sheets SLEEP HEALTH

ADVANCED DENTAL SLEEP TREATMENT CENTER

Sleep apnea can significantly affect a person’s quality of life, causing symptoms like headaches, fatigue, snoring, difficulty with concentration, and memory loss. It also increases risk of serious health issues like dementia, heart attack, stroke, and cancer. But only a fraction of the people it affects receive treatment.

“Obstructive sleep apnea is a huge issue—for millions of Americans— that goes largely untreated,” said Dr. Melissa Sheets, owner of Advanced Dental Sleep Treatment Center. “We want to change that.”

After diagnosis, Dr. Sheets and her team thoroughly educate patients on their condition and treatment choices from oral appliances to CPAP or surgical options. The team strives to make sure patients not only get treatment resulting in more restful sleep, but that they also feel completely comfortable from their first diagnostic visit to annual follow-ups.

“We don’t judge your health, your history, your habits, or your symptoms, because what we care about is helping people,” she said. “Our patients routinely tell us personally or in reviews that they feel so at ease when they come to visit us. We want you to feel like family.”

Jeff and Amy Grewe TREE SERVICES

ARBOR AESTHETICS

Arbor Aesthetics founders Jeff and Amy Grewe have seen much growth since they started the business in 2005, and not just the botanical kind. The company and its team of certified arborists dedicated to the health, beauty, and safety of trees are thriving.

“As our company has grown, Amy and I have stepped out of our roles in operations and more into visionary roles, which has created opportunities for our team to fill that void and create leaders,” Jeff said.

The company started out with a focus on residential clientele. Arbor Aesthetics is continuing in that niche, but the company’s services are also expanding into another sector.

“We’re starting to move more into a commercial space, working for apartment complexes, business complexes, and other class-A commercial and retail businesses,” Amy said. “We’ve really honed in on what makes us Omaha’s premier residential provider, and now we want more commercial clients to discover the high level of service that’s available to them when they invest in a professional, reliable outfit.”

Meghan Wilke & Suzanne Wilke DOG DAYCARE

By n ature, dogs want to be active and to be around people,” observed Suzanne Wilke, who founded Bark Avenue in 2000. “We have different levels of daycare, from ‘Puppy Time’ to ‘Senior Strolls.’” For safety and comfort, play groups are organized according to size and temperament. A small dog who is highly active might be placed with medium-sized dogs, as might a large dog who prefers the company of smaller, less energetic dogs. In addition to scheduling regular playtimes and other activities, Bark Avenue includes a daily nap time.

“They play in the morning, and then we shut the lights off, turn spa music on, and require them to rest,” Wilke explained.

Bark Avenue’s commitment to happy and healthy pups hasn’t gone unnoticed, and receiving the Best of Omaha award for dog daycare is a source of

pride for Wilke: “Our customer’s vote is the highest compliment we can get.”

Wilke’s career began with dog grooming in high school. Early this year, she began transitioning her company’s ownership to her daughter-in-law, Meghan Wilke, who worked at Bark Avenue prior to a successful career at Mutual of Omaha.

0 22 and 2023 have been standout years for Batten Trailer Leasing. B atten’s national customer base grew substantially, the company serving clients from coast to coast and border to border. Local carrier and logistics services are also scaling to our customer’s needs. 2023 was also a tragic year, as we saw the passing of our founder—Blaine Batten—in the month of March.

The Batten Team now looks forward to continuing Blaine’s legacy in all the business facets he worked to develop. The team remains motivated to increase the value, volume, and quality of flatbed, step deck, and van trailer leasing. The company is fostering a growing client base—accessing our

smaller trailers and stock trails—that makes use of smaller than commercial tractor vehicles. Batten is offering trailer repair services as well.

In 2000, Smitty Smith opened Big Brain Tattoos in the Old Market. More than 20 years later, the shop is still in the same location. “We are entrenched in our community,” Smith said. “We’re tattooing the kids of our original customers.”

Over the years, Smith has seen a shift in attitudes toward tattoos. “People used to get tattoos to stand out from the group. Today they often get tattoos to bookmark a life-changing event or show that they’re part of a group.” For example, breast cancer survivors often get a tattoo of a breast cancer ribbon.

Big Brain Tattoos employs 22 people, including eight tattoo artists and

three piercing specialists. Five artists have been with the shop for 15 years or more.

When customers ask how the shop got its unusual name, Smith explains that it came from a line in the movie Pulp Fiction: “Check out the big brain on Brad.” When somebody in the shop does something smart or stupid, their co-workers will say, “Check out the big brain on…” whoever it is.

GUARDIANSHIP AND CONSERVATORSHIP BLAZEK

LAW GROUP

In addition to helping people obtain guardianship, we help with the decisions they need to make for their loved one,” said Molly Blazek, owner of Blazek Law Group. Most of the firm’s clients have a child with special needs or a relative with age-related cognitive decline.

“When a special needs child reaches 19 in the State of Nebraska, they become their own guardian,” Blazek explained, “but they might not be able to make their own medical and financial decisions, so their parent would have to seek a guardianship for them so that they could continue supporting in those roles.”

Sometimes a guardian is appointed at the request of a county judge. Blazek herself is a court-appointed guardian for over 30 people. Guardianship has touched the lives of the attorneys and professional staff of Blazek Law Group, and they are dedicated to supporting caregivers and their loved ones alike.

“We host workshops and have a robust online presence providing education and resources through our Guardian Connect platform,” Blazek added. “Our mission is to unite guardians and conservators across Nebraska in a way that has never been done before.”

Native Kenyan Dr. Betty Kola founded Buoyant Family Services Counseling to provide immigrants with mentalhealth services from a practitioner who’s culturally sensitive and understands their unique needs. And now, even as people are returning to something resembling normalcy after the COVID-19 pandemic, Kola said many of her clients are seeking treatment to deal with the aftermath of a period of isolation and stress, or the longer-term impact of negative coping strategies.

“What we’re seeing mostly right now is the effects of the collective trauma of COVID, and the need to seek mental health care is very important right now,” Kola said.

Kola also emphasized that clients can expect an atmosphere of no judgment and a genuine sense of respect and determination to work with them if they are willing to put in the effort. She works with adults, children, and families with a specialization in treating clients who’ve experienced trauma.

“We’re proud that more people are seeking help and we encourage others to not let stigma prevent you from seeking services,” she said.

BURTON A/C, HEATING, PLUMBING & MORE

“Putting our customers first in everything we do is in our company culture, language and actions,” he explained. “Since Burton first opened in 1989, we’ve hired nothing but the best technicians and support staff in the industry, and each of them are service-oriented right from the start. Our team of over 120 techs and staff is dedicated to leave everything better than we found it.”

Burton’s approach to teamwork and long-term careers includes frequent personal and professional development opportunities to help employees stay sharp with the best customer service practices, skills, and technology.

Burton serves over 23,000 customers a year with technicians available around the clock.

“We value our customers’ time and we understand that if they’re calling for a repair, they’re probably not having the best day. So, our team goes above and beyond to provide every customer with up-front pricing and multiple options including repair, replacement or upgrade. Then they get right to work, quickly and neatly,” Evans said. “We educate our customers on maintenance tips and make sure they understand how their system works. Every customer is our top priority, whether they’re looking for a repair, preventative maintenance, or a whole new system.”

Fo r the 18th year in a row, Burton A/C, Heating, Plumbing & More was voted Best of Omaha, a nod to Burton’s unbroken streak of exceptional customer service, said President Mark Evans.

Burton serves the community on a broader level, too. In conjunction with a discounted furnace safety inspection and cleaning service, Burton and its customers have donated over 4,700 pounds of canned food to Food Bank for the Heartland since 2020. The company has also partnered with the Nebraska Humane Society and donated 10 pounds of pet food for every customer who took advantage of a discounted A/C system check—totaling more than 3,500 pounds of food since 2021.

“We’re grateful for the more than 4,400 five-star reviews we’ve received on Google—more than any competitor in the market,” Evans said. “I think people really appreciate knowing their home is in good hands every single time they call Burton. Marine Corps. Always drawn to caring for children, he focuses not only on providing the safest, most effective surgical outcomes, but supporting concerned families with compassion and expertise.

Dr. Koh assumed her role in 2021, having previously practiced at some of the nation’s top children’s hospitals. For her, the work is personal. She grew up in a family affected by

epilepsy. Those experiences help Dr. Koh understand first-hand the challenges patient families face with the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions.

Last year, Children’s introduced a new Neurosciences Center on its main hospital campus, integrating Neurology and Neurosurgery in one collaborative space. The approach improves the patient experience for families, who can see providers efficiently in the same place.

“We have united to offer better care for patients across the spectrum of neurological conditions,” Dr. Koh said.

“We are innovating and collaborating to lead our departments together with a modern approach to integrated care.”

Children’s surgical setting is unrivaled in the region. Its state-ofthe-art Hubbard Center for Children opened in 2021 and boasts a worldclass operating suite configured for intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI). This enables surgeons to obtain MRI images quickly, safely and conveniently during procedures to improve experiences and outcomes.

In 2022, Children’s celebrated multiple pediatric neurosurgery firsts in the state by expanding its

precision medicine offerings to map and treat epilepsy and brain tumors. Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) and Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) methods debuted in the fall for diagnosis and treatment of seizures and tumors. Robotic Stereotactic Assistance (ROSA) technology launched in the spring to assist surgeons with complex, minimally-invasive treatments. All three milestones provide cuttingedge advancements for greater safety, effectiveness and faster recovery times.

“As we transition to contemporary precision medicine, the SEEG and

LITT methods allow us to interrogate and access critical regions of the brain,” Dr. Klugh said. “They expand our opportunities to provide lasting, effective care for patients. This technology and innovation, paired with our team’s commitment, establish Children’s among the region’s leaders in this space.”

“Company culture is the foundation for your success,” she said. “Employees are seeking out a company culture that lends itself to empowerment, personal growth and a family-like team.”

Steele created Company Culture REDEFINED to empower leaders and teams with the tools necessary to create change and make an impact on their employees and their company. Steele resided in Southeast Asia for more than 20 years, adding an international lens to how she communicates and builds rapport. President Steve Huber said the high-end custom home builder’s experienced team— which includes a group dedicated to renovation and additions—is ready to meet the needs of homeowners for whatever project they envision.

“There’s still a lot of interest in building new homes and also in remodeling or additions,” he said.

The company regularly sees repeat business via clients who want to accommodate a new stage of life, Huber added. This need inspired a new development in the works at 230th and Center Streets, Sanctuary Ridge, that will feature 14 new homes geared toward empty-nesters. The mostly ranch-style home plans will include features for aging in place and will be designed for the client who no longer has the space demands of a growing family and wants to reduce maintenance demands but still desires quality finishes and a touch of luxury.

“They can downscale and still have a high-end home,” Huber said, adding that the company is also in the early development stages of other projects expected to be announced throughout the year.

In 1981, John F. Lund started The Lund Company with one employee: himself. Today, the company is a dominant player in real estate services and investments. With a team of approximately 450 and a customized suite of services, The Lund Company expertly guides clients through all commercial real estate sectors.

The Lund Company went through an ownership transition last year.

“It was a successful succession story,” CEO Jason Fisher said, praising legacy partners John Lund, Richard Secor, and Jerry Kelly for their early vision and leadership in ensuring the organization would perpetuate. “At the end of the day, we had an amazing transition that sets the company up for continued growth and expansion of ownership.”

The new generation of partners includes Fisher, President Tanya Shapiro, CFO Ryan Hill, Executive Director of Capital Markets Dwayne Sieck, and Principal Michael Earl.

“The smooth transition of ownership rewarded partners who helped build the company but allowed us to continue with our momentum,” Fisher said.

“We are continuing to experience significant expansion regionally. Momentum and continuity are key factors in that success,” he said.

FAMILY DENTISTRY THE DENTISTS

The Dentists” is about as straightforward and self-evident a name as you can get for a dental practice, and as it suggests, the six dentists—Dr. Jay Samuelson, Dr. Amy Ruf, Dr. J.R. Demman, Dr. Brian Pendley, Dr. Michael Pabian and Dr. Chad Snow—provide comprehensive care at several area locations. This not only makes services accessible to more community members, it also ensures availability, practice administrator Jennifer Abshier said.

“We have four offices doing complete, full-service dentistry. The owners are working owners, and they’re in the office every day,” Abshier said. “If we can’t get an emergency in at one office, we’re going to find a place to take care of you that day.”

Each patient’s individualized plan starts with a conversation about concerns,

needs, and priorities, followed by a thorough exam. The Dentists offer the latest in dentistry for children and adults, such as sedation dentistry and dental implants, and share options for each patient whether they need something as simple as a checkup and routine dental cleaning or more extensive work like cavities filled or restorative procedures.

AUTO MECHANICAL REPAIR

DINGMAN’S MECHANICAL REPAIR

Twenty years after Boyd Dingman opened Dingman’s Collision Center, the trusted and reputable company began offering automotive mechanical repair services at Dingman’s Mechanical Repair, conveniently located near the collision center location at 120th Street and West Maple Road.

“Our core values and mission are the same,” Manager Todd Thompson said, adding that Dingman’s ASE Certified technicians strive to provide quality repairs in a timely manner, along with excellent customer service. Dingman’s Mechanical Repair supports body shop customers with total car care, but basic automotive services such as oil changes, scheduled maintenance, brake service and repair, tire service, alignment, diagnostics, and used vehicle inspections are available to the public.

Thompson said the Dingman’s Mechanical Repair team respects how important it is for customers to be able to rely on a sound vehicle, especially in a community that doesn’t have widespread public transportation. Plus, a car is a significant investment that warrants appropriate maintenance and dependable repairs by a certified mechanic, whether it’s brand-new or has been on the road for many years.

“It’s important to take your vehicle somewhere that is up-to-date in repair procedures and following manufacturer guidelines,” she said.

Dingman’s commitment to community members and their vehicles extends beyond the garage. The company has supported many nonprofits over the years, especially those serving families and children. During the COVID19 pandemic, fewer cars on the road meant fewer collisions and a drop in business. Dingman’s not only managed to keep everyone on the payroll, but also allocated employee hours for nonprofit service activities—such as collecting donated goods and helping groups with facility clean-up.

“We asked everyone to do their part to help the community, Dingman said, adding, “We celebrated 25 years in Omaha this past year. The community has been great to us and it’s important for us to give back to them as well.” DINGMAN’S

“We partner with our customers to implement systems that work for them,” added Jim’s brother, Dan Egan. “We can also provide our customers with reporting that’s required for various reasons.”

In addition to providing traditional cleaning systems and supplies, Egan Supply offers recently developed sanitization methods such as aqueous ozone

GARAGE LIVING OF OMAHA

People call us because they’re tired of the clutter in their garage,” said Garage Living of Omaha co-owner Theresa Nelson. “They want a place where they can hang out and watch TV and throw parties. We’ve done a couple of home gyms during the pandemic and some study rooms for kids.”

When Theresa and Chad Nelson purchased their franchise in May 2019, Chad had spent decades as a home renovation contractor and Theresa had served for 24 years in the Omaha Police Department. They visited Garage Living’s headquarters and were impressed by the quality products and the support provided. Another important factor for them was that Garage Living was a North American based company. All of their products are designed and developed by the Garage Living team

and their manufacturing plants are all located in North America.

The Nelsons take pride in their dedicated crew of installers. “We’re a one-stop shop, and we don’t sub anything out,” Theresa explained. “Our products are top-of-the-line and our crew members are trained in specific ways to do things. There’s a process for everything.”

Repeat customers affirm the Nelson’s comprehensive approach. “One of the

customers we had during our first year, we’ve now done her garage, all of her kids’ garages, and now we’re doing their friends’ garages,” Theresa said.

Getting ready to move is never easy, but the process can be especially tough for people who are downsizing.

“Aging parents often have trouble bringing all of their kids together to decide what each one will have from the household,” says Shayne Fili, founder of Golden Years Relocation Services. “We can do an auction that’s only between the siblings, and they never have to leave their home. If you’re injured on the job and not being treated fairly by an insurance company, who are the best lawyers to consult with? The lawyers that used to work for the insurance companies but now exclusively represent injured employees.

Sara Lamme, Erin Fox, and Justin High spent decades representing insurers and now work collaboratively, sharing their accumulated experience and applying it for their clients’ benefit.

“That’s a huge advantage to our clients because it means we are always one step ahead of the opposition. We understand how they work.” Lamme explained.

Erin Fox and Sara Lamme practice workers’ compensation law for employees exclusively, while Justin High handles workers’ compensation and personal injury cases.

The lawyers at High & Younes understand that focusing on the client helps them achieve success. Fox said “When people come to our firm, we make a point to treat them as a person, not just a workers’ compensation case.”

High & Younes offers free consultations for workers’ compensation cases. According to Justin High “We don’t believe an injured worker and their family should have to pay to learn what their rights are.” The firm handles cases for injured workers throughout Nebraska and Iowa.

Shelly Jochim TRAFFIC CONTROL HIGHWAY

SIGNING INC

Most Omaha motorists have likely driven through a traffic control project managed by Highway Signing Inc. That’s because they readily take on many of the more complicated road construction projects in Omaha. “Our top priority is ensuring that the traveling public is safe when they go through a construction project,” said Matt Fatka, Highway Signing owner and CEO.

From municipal to private sector projects, Highway Signing’s traffic control services and equipment are relied upon as HSI partners throughout Nebraska. In addition to traffic control they offer temporary concrete and water barriers, pavement markings, temporary traffic signals, digital messaging boards, and water blasting. They are one of only two companies in the

Midwest to offer polyurea pavement markings, noted for being uniquely long lasting and reflective.

Fatka believes the key to being an industry leader in traffic control comes down to the team members. “We have incredible people that bring experience to their roles. When you have a team like we do, you can provide the highest level of service.”

Realtor Nico Marasco said that as he helps people navigate through a sale, he also strives to minimize the client’s stress and inconvenience. His results speak for themselves, and it’s not surprising that much of his business comes from referrals from happy clients and positive online reviews.

Marasco also understands that it’s crucial for his clients to be satisfied with the choices they make when buying or selling a new home. They’re considering a lifetime investment, said Marasco, who handles both residential resale and new construction. Marasco has built a successful career by making sure he lives up to his clients’ trust as a licensed professional who understands the local market.

“At the root of every client planning session, we’re always looking first for the right type of media to use and then finding creative solutions to place in those spots,” said Patsy Sumner, founder and CEO. “It’s an important distinction between creating a brand message and then throwing it out into market versus knowing where the audience is and building a message that makes sense in that format.”

Sandy Lemke SENIOR ENTERTAINERS

MERRYMAKERS ASSOCIATION

Going to a live Merrymakers show is so powerful,” said Sandy Lemke, executive director of Merrymakers Association. “You can see seniors who are sitting in their seats with their eyes closed, but when they hear their favorite song, they light up and start singing along.”

Merrymakers Association was founded in 1986 when musician Jim Johnson was performing at his mother’s nursing home in Blair, Nebraska. With funding from donations and grants, the organization has grown to provide free, professional musical entertainment every month to more than 50,000 seniors in almost 200 locations in Nebraska and Iowa.

“We have 30 professional musicians who play music that is dear to seniors’ hearts—songs from the ’40s all the way up to the ’70s and ’80s,” Lemke noted. All of the performers are vocalists, and some also play acoustic guitar or keyboard.

Musicians find out about Merrymakers from other musicians, and Lemke auditions prospective entertainers before adding them to the roster.

“I like to hire musicians who are fulltime, working musicians rather than hobbyists,” Lemke emphasized, “because our seniors deserve the best.”

Solid ground isn’t really so solid, Mixan Mudjacking owner Bob Mixan explained. Soil shifts, swells and shrinks with the typical Midwestern fluctuation of moisture content, temperature, and freeze/thaw cycles throughout the year. And when that movement takes place below concrete, the result may be an uneven or cracked surface.

Mixan Mudjacking provides property owners with a less expensive and quicker alternative to tearing out and replacing concrete: mudjacking, which lifts and levels concrete through a drilling and slurry-pumping process that effectively pushes up the slab from below.

“It can be done in hours versus a day or two,” Mixan said. “As soon as we’re done, people can be walking on it.”

The family-owned and family-operated company also offers concrete replacement, caulking, and excavation services for both residential and commercial clients, and indoor work can be done year-round. Pricing is competitive, Mixan said. Mixan Mudjacking, which has been in business nearly 30 years, has served many out-of-state clients but its core customer base remains the Omaha area.

Today, it provides a full spectrum of development and management services for clients across the country and is known for many high-profile projects in the Omaha area. BENEFIT ADVISERS THE OLSON GROUP

When working with an executive team, The Olson Group’s experts strive for innovative solutions and take many factors into consideration as they develop the company’s customized group insurance and retirement planning benefits. The Olson Group’s trademarked BenefitsEdge™ process provides exceptional insight into four key areas of an organization: communication, compliance, services/costs, and benefits strategy. BenefitsEdge™ also highlights a company’s strengths and opportunities.

“It’s a strategic process that really aims at helping employers achieve their goals and objectives,” said The Olson Group Chief Executive Officer, Julie Nelson. “It takes a unique look at all the different stakeholders of a company and pinpoints the challenges, and we can then come in with our knowledge of benefits and trends and help them create a three- to fiveyear strategic plan.”

Nelson added that “there’s no onesize-fits-all” when it comes to advising clients on benefits options, but a solid benefits program is always going to be important to any employer—especially in a tight labor market like many sectors are currently experiencing—for attracting and retaining talent.

OMAHA PRIMARY EYE CARE

The Omaha Primary Eye Care team provides traditional optometry services like vision exams, eyeglass prescriptions, and contact lens fittings for patients of all ages. However, they also offer the latest treatment options for common conditions such as dry eyes and myopia as well as for conditions that have been historically challenging to treat, like keratoconus.

For instance, specialty scleral lenses can be prescribed for conditions such as corneal irregularity and ocular surface disease, said Dr. Marsha Kubica. “It’s a viable option for people that feel like they’re not able to wear contacts, and we can improve their vision dramatically,” she explained.

Another newer treatment is orthokeratology, or ortho-k, lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea to improve vision. It’s one of several options that can slow the progression of myopia in children, a growing concern related to screen time.

These are just a few examples, and patients who’ve been told in the past that their choices are limited should not hesitate to reach out, Kubica added. “There are new treatment options that patients should know about,” she said.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

When I’m doing any type of speaking, I see it as an opportunity to share my testimony and the transformation that has happened in my life,” said Rachel D. Fox. When she is invited to present a keynote speech, she makes sure the purpose of the event aligns with her focus on encouraging, empowering, and inspiring others.

No matter whether Rachel is speaking to an audience of thousands, or coaching individuals one-on-one, she promotes personal transformation.

“I think that telling my story in an authentic way resonates with audiences small and large,” she affirmed.

Rachel’s professional and personal experience equips her to speak on topics such as women in the

workplace; women in technology; and diversity, belonging, and inclusion. Her prior experiences as a working, single mother, a domestic violence survivor, and a caregiver for a child with a serious illness allow Fox to connect with audiences with compassion and authenticity. Brian Roeder FUNERAL PLANNING

ROEDER MORTUARY

After a brief stint in college, Brian Roeder served his country for six years as fire controlman in the U.S. Navy. After completing his service, Roeder earned his degree before joining the family business in 2003.

“As far as I know, we are the only veteran-owned funeral home in Omaha,” he noted. Roeder provides discounts to veterans, helps with veterans’ programs, and assists veterans in getting seats on honor flights and free tickets to special events.

Founded in 1912, Roeder Mortuary serves the Omaha community from three locations: 108th and Maple, 50th and Ames, and Gretna.

In recent years, the business has seen increased rates of pre-need funeral planning. Parents often make their own arrangements in order to alleviate the burden on their children.

Another recent trend is a rising interest in green funerals.

“My main question would be: ‘What do you consider a green funeral?’” Roeder said. “The end result of cremation is green, but it takes a lot of energy to get to that point. A direct burial can be green if you choose a non-sealing casket and a non-sealing outer container. If you do that, you’ll go right back to the earth.”

In addition to green burials, Roeder Mortuary provides a variety of funeral services, including: traditional and memorial burials, cremation, veteran services and discounts, preneed arrangements, and payment plans.

Dave Guenthner MEDICAL STAFFING

RTG M edical’s recruiters and administrative team are now operating out of the company’s eagerly anticipated and beautiful new headquarters at Highway 275 and Highway 30 in Fremont. The building reflects the belief that work environment is “critical,” chief financial officer Dave Guenthner said.

“The facility helps us attract the right people, and it retains people, too, because it’s a great place to come to work,” he said. “We built a good, solid infrastructure for the business going forward and to give people a lot of opportunities.”

The staffing agency connects healthcare professionals with temporary positions in facilities across the country. The new facility was built with growth in mind, and RTG is in full-on hiring mode, Guenthner said.

“It’s a good market for recruiters and also for the nurses and physical therapists and CNAs looking for positions around the country,” he said, adding that recruiters are supported by top-notch training.

Many RTG employees commute from Omaha, including Guenthner himself.

“The sun’s at your back, coming and going,” he said. “It’s an easy drive along the way.”

Amanda Hooper MEETING & EVENTS VENUE SCOTT CONFERENCE CENTER

Food, location, and atmosphere have always been important to event planning, but audiovisual and the latest technology capabilities have proven just as essential in recent years.

“Audiovisual is a now a staple for weddings,” noted Amanda Hooper, sales director for the Scott Conference Center. “And for our corporate clients, we can live-stream conferences for people who are unable to travel to Omaha. Our Audiovisual Staff are on-site, which means they’re available when needed.”

The Scott Conference Center’s location on UNO’s Scott Campus has caused some in the community to falsely believe that only those who are affiliated with the University can book an event there.

“That’s just not the case,” Hooper points out. “From weddings to corporate meetings to fundraisers, we’re happy to assist.”

Offering on-site catering and flexible space to accommodate both large and small groups, the Scott Conference Center has been recognized as Omaha’s B2B Best Corporate Meeting Venue since 2011, and is an ongoing recipient of The Knot’s Couple’s Choice and Best of Weddings Hall of Fame awards.

“Our dates fill up fast, so give us a call,” Hooper recommended.

Miki Newhouse, Alison Hult, Dave Nelson CORPORATE/COMPANY

We create and refine brands to stand out,” said Dave Nelson, owner of branding agency SecretPenguin. Founded in 2000, Nelson’s firm stands out from the competition in its focus, structure, and winning process.

Rather than roll out advertising campaigns, SecretPenguin explores how customers interact with a brand. “If you have a bad experience, you’re not going to come back because their logo looks good or because they have a great advertisement,” Nelson noted. “Our clients rarely pay for advertising; most of it is through word of mouth.”

SecretPenguin’s 10-member team is collaborative, and the organizational chart is level. “We support one

another, not report to one another,” Nelson said. “We have a lead account person and a lead creative person on each project, and everyone follows their lead. It’s a really fun way to work.”

The fun also extends to SecretPenguin’s process with clients, from momand-pops to industry giants. “We’ve created and/or refined over 250 brands using our process, The Iceberg Build, with a 99% success rate,” Nelson continued. “We aim to eliminate the

frustration many brands face when working with agencies. No need for endless revisions, no big egos making design choices over our clients’ vision.”

Es sentially all we do is personal injury cases,” explained Terry Sibbernsen, founder of Sibbernsen Law Firm. “We do something that a lot of lawyers don’t do. We try cases.”

After graduating from Marquette University, Terry served as a captain in the U.S. Army before earning his J.D. from Creighton University School of Law in 1974. Since then, he has litigated a large number of personal injury and medical malpractice cases in Nebraska and Iowa. Terry is highly regarded by clients and other attorneys and is a member and past president of the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys.

Nothing says quality like premium high-butterfat ice cream made the old-fashioned way with real cream, sugar, and eggs. Ted & Wally’s, owned by brother-and-sister team Joe and Jeanne Pittack, even uses vintage freezers and primarily locally sourced ingredients to create a wide spectrum of unique flavors available at two locations.

“We do everything from scratch,” Jeanne Pittack said. “There are a lot of chain places and there is a lot of factory ice cream at the grocery stores. We do something special, something different.”

In a modern twist, Ted & Wally’s has also created vegan and keto-friendly options. Patrons can also enjoy Cajun fare from A Taste of New Orleans via its food truck at the downtown location or in the shared restaurant space at the Benson location.

“Ted & Wally’s originated at the downtown location in 1984 and thrives nearly 40 years later, especially with the re-opening of the Gene Leahy Mall,” Joe Pittack said. Both locations continue to enjoy a brisk business serving both longtime patrons and new generations of ice-cream lovers.

CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING

WILKINS RADIO NETWORK - KLNG“THE VIEW FROM A PEW”

Wilkens Broadcasting is a Christian talk network that broadcasts my daily show ‘The View From A Pew’ at 4pm CST” said “Mac” McKoy, local radio host for station KLNG (1560AM and 101.5FM). “The View From A Pew” reaches listeners in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas, and Missouri—and across the globe via the “View From A Pew” Facebook page and YouTube channel (@macmckoy.)

“I interview local Pastors from local churches,” McKoy noted. “It’s all faith-based. Jesus 101. We are the only show like it in the Omaha metro.”

McKoy’s radio career began at age 12, but his involvement in faith-based programming is a more recent calling.

“Jesus mugged me 14 years ago,” McKoy explained. “It’s the best life I could ever imagine.”

Today McKoy teaches Bible studies with a focus on forgiveness. In 2020, Jesus called out to him and said, “we’re moving home to Omaha.”

Mckoy replied, “Yes, sir,” and upon arrival, “It’s great to be home!”

McKoy credits his grandmother for teaching him that faith is a relationship, not a doctrine.

“When anybody wants to talk about Jesus and not get pounded on the head because they don’t believe or they believe differently, I want to be that guy,” McKoy affirmed. “To me, that’s who a disciple of Jesus is.”

COMMUNITY BUILDING & ENGAGEMENT

ZAISS & COMPANY

No matter how fast the world moves, or how technology changes the channels by which companies promote, Zaiss & Company’s commitment to representing the customer’s point-of-view stands the test of time. Now in its 34th year of business—with satisfied clients across the nation—Zaiss & Company’s unique approach to marketing solutions has proven particularly effective in building communities and engaging audiences.

“Customers today want a brand they can believe in, not just buy from,” said President Wendy Wiseman. “Brands need to showcase what they stand for and how they live their missions. We help them do that with marketing strategies that assure the brand resonates with whom they want to reach.”

Wiseman said that two key channels in which to build community and engage customers are social and earned media (PR). She calls these “twin sisters” in the marketing mix because a lot of public relations is earned in the social sphere.

“Social media gives us the opportunity to be visual, launch video, and most important, tell stories,” Wiseman said.

“One of our distinctions as marketing partner is how we dive deep to get to know our clients’ businesses,” she continued. “This informs our marketing strategies and inspires our creative implementation. It’s how we invest in building brands and meeting goals and it works.”
