Wine Vouchers – the Perfect Gift for Everyone by: Francesca Krajewski video available at www.olytrader.com What do you buy the person who has everything? Clothes? No they probably already have a walk–in wardrobe the size of your house. The latest gadget? No again. Their designer house is most likely to be kitted out with all the latest gizmos on the market, either that or it’s already on order! One of those experience days? Well maybe, but who’s to say they don’t own a racing car or helicopter, or have a personal spa complete with masseuse they use on a more than regular basis. No that’s out too. So you are stuck and most probably cursing your gift recipient for being so damn difficult and making your present buying a living nightmare! Well think outside the box. You need something that is both pleasurable but also useful and that you know is going to tick all their mostly already full boxes. So what can you buy that they will really enjoy and maybe you can benefit from too? The solution is simple. Something consumable! And it doesn’t come much better than in the form of their, or your, favorite tipple. Jackpot. So are we talking a lone bottle of Champagne, aka ‘sparkling wine’ plucked from the supermarket shelves? Or a lovely hamper full of things you nor they have ever heard of or will ever eat? Perhaps the most luxurious chocolates you can afford (which will most probably, having eaten the whole box, make them feel sick and curse you for the next three days)? All possible

but not really hitting the spot? Then why not opt for something a little different and purchase some wine vouchers? Satisfying all the senses, sight, smell, sound, touch and most importantly taste, a wine voucher shows both original thinking but also offers your gift recipient something a little different. A present they can tailor to their specific tastes and really enjoy, be it browsing, buying or consuming their gift. And if you are really lucky you might even get to taste the end result too. Great idea we here you cry, but where on earth do I get wine vouchers from? Well at one end of the scale you could always go to your local supermarket and buy a ‘gift card’ writing a little note to say – Merry Christmas, go treat yourself to your favorite bottle of Merlot. Alternatively you could go to a specialist wine outlet and buy an online wine voucher, which would allow your gift recipient to browse a great many wonderful wines and find something more tantalizing, (at the same time requiring far less present buying stress than usual). From a rich Rioja to some cheeky Champagne, wine vouchers enable the intended recipient to go forth and browse to their heart’s content to find their perfect gift. But it doesn’t just have to be something you buy for another. You too could ask for wine vouchers as a present and put the money to good use, using the value to purchase a collection of fantastic wines that will compliment a great dinner party, enable you to host your own wine tasting evening or just provide the perfect end to a busy, stressful day.

To make the cakes: In a large mixing bowl with mixer on a mediumhigh speed, beat butter, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt and vanilla for 2 minutes or until creamy. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, until blended. In a two cup measuring cup stir the buttermilk, food coloring, and vinegar until well blended. With mixer on low speed, beat in flour in thirds,

alternating with the buttermilk mixture in two additions. Beat just until blended. Put a scant 1/4 cup of the batter over the candy in each muffin cup. Pour gently so the candy stays in the center. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes before removing from pan. Then remove the cakes from the pan and allow to finish cooling on the wire rack. To make the frosting: Beat the cream cheese and butter in a medium bowl with the mixer on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Reduce the speed to low and add the powdered sugar and vanilla. Increase the speed to high and beat until smooth and fluffy. Frost cupcakes and sprinkle with candy sugars or other decorations to suit the occasion. Refrigerate until serving. Enjoy!

Brandy and Cognac by: Fiona Muller

Brandy and Cognac are traditionally associated with after dinner drinks or for having a quick snifter of when going out hunting or on a brisk walk. Brandy was also seen as being medicinal in the past because of its warming qualities – think St Bernard dogs finding victims of avalanches. In fact it is a drink that has lots of past associations but of late has had a bit of a development in its image. Brandy and Cognac in fact were going through a drought – whiskey was the drink to be seen with and Cognac producers in France were destroying their vines because their product was just not selling. However this has all changed now. Brandy and Cognac, especially the more expensive label cognac, are now associated with rap stars. It has been assimilated into black music by the likes of Busta Rhymes and Jay-Z. Brandy or Cognac is often name checked in songs such as Busta Rhymes’s raunchy “Pass the Courvoisier”. The drink rivals sex, drugs and guns as a staple subject for rap lyrics and titles. Hennessy seems to be the drink of choice but all the other brand names get a mention too. The

February 2009 best cognacs are also particularly prized today, by an even more unlikely clientele, the clientele of the nightclubs of Moscow. In fact cognac sales in America increased 6.7 per cent last year. They have trebled in 10 years and now account for 36 per cent of all world sales. After years of decline, cognac is also booming in urban France, where the young drink it long with tonic or mineral water. So what is Cognac and what is the difference between Brandy and Cognac? Cognac is a type of brandy – it is called cognac due to the region of France where it originates but has to go through a host of processes before it can actually be called by the name cognac. Brandy is made by distilling wine. The wine that is used for the production of brandy is acidic thin wine which goes through a double distilling process – the resulting spirit is colorless and has an alcohol contact of about 70%. Brandy was originally known as Brandywine and it can be made from grapes or other fruits – think apricot or cherry brandy. The color of the brandy id usually made by either aging the spirit in casks or by adding a colorant to imitate the process. Cognac however is a different beast – produced by a similar process it can’t be sold or even called cognac until it has been aged for two years. The cognac is produced by blending different mixtures of the aged spirit and the age of the final product depends on the age of the youngest distillate that has been used in the mixture.

One Now, One Later Chicken Potpies by: Linda Wilson One of the smartest things the busy cook can do is to make double portions and freeze one for later. This chicken pot pie recipe is designed with that idea in mind. Make one of the pies in an aluminum or other freezable pie pan, pop it in the freezer and you have dinner for another busy day. This takes no extra time during the initial preparations and will come in very handy later. There is no need to buy expensive “quick” meals when you can make your own. This is not only a “busy cook” idea but also a great way to cut back on your food budget. ONE NOW, ONE LATER CHICKEN POTPIES 1 cup cooked chicken, cubed 4 cups frozen mixed vegetables, thawed 1 can (18.5 oz) readyto-serve creamy chicken soup 1 can (18.5 oz) readyto-serve cream of potato soup 1 pkg (15 oz) refrigerated pie pastry Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chicken, vegetables, and soups. Pour half the mixture into a nine-inch pie plate; repeat with the other half in another pie plate. Roll out the pastry to fit the tops of the pies. Cut “breathing” slits in the pastry sheets. Fit pastry over the tops of the filling. Trim and seal edges. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. NOTE: If you want, you can put one of the pies in an aluminum or other freezer-proof pie pan. Before baking, cover pie well and freeze for up to three months. To cook the frozen pie remove from the freezer 30 minutes before baking. Do NOT completely thaw. Cover the edges of the crust loosely with aluminum foil. Place pie on a baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and remove the foil. Bake 60 to 65 minutes more until golden brown. Enjoy! (twice)

HOME & GARDENING

Growing Flowers in Your Garden by: Timothy Spencer

video available at www.olytrader.com Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. It provides soothing therapy for some people especially when they see their work bloom in season. These are the sort of people who want to use their hands to make living things grow strong and healthy through their patience and hard work. Thus, gardeners often feel a strong connection with the soil and a powerful appreciation for beauty that only flowers can provide. The hours may be long and the work backbreaking, but the rewards of seeing a single flower bloom can lift all the hours and the aches away. If you’re looking for a new hobby or just something to do to spend idle time while at home, try gardening. Why? Well, one good reason is that a garden will definitely make your home look more attractive and beautiful. Besides that, the air in your private space will be cleaner and fresher since the plants absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. Growing flowers is easy, if you have the time and patience for it. The tools are not that expensive and there are various resources in books, magazines and the Internet to help you with your project. A small piece of land, tools, and knowledge is all you need to start a gardening project in your backyard. Here are some basic instructions: 1. Choosing the right spot. A sunny area with well-drained, fertile soil is the best for flowering plants. Make sure that the area is sheltered from strong winds that could defoliate and destroy the blooms.

Page 5

OLYMPIC TRADER - www.olytrader.com

2. Preparing the soil. Dig the soil thoroughly with a shovel until it is fine and loose. Add a large amount of compost or organic fertilizer to the top layer and mix it a bit with the soil. Fertilizers are vital to ensuring that your plants have all the nutrients they need for growing strong and healthy so make sure to do it properly. 3. Planting the seeds. You can buy the seeds at any department store or gardening shop here in the Philippines for a relatively cheap price. Follow the instructions in the package in planting the seeds. Depending on the requirement of your flowering plants, plant the seeds deep or only at the surface. 4. Watering. Water the seeds or plants at least twice a day. Moderate the amount of water as over-watering could kill your garden easily. 5. Fertilizing. Fertilize the flower bed periodically to make your flowers grow well. 6. Pest control. Always watch out for pests that could damage your flowers and take care of them early. Common pests are easily killed with the pesticides out in the market so ask your retailer for advice when you come down to buy. 7. Deadheading. Remove diseased, infested, rotting or old blooms and leaves. This will prevent the disease from spreading or attracting the pests. Also, the plants will bloom longer since dead flowers signal that the plant should start producing seeds. These are only basic tips so make sure to read more details on creating your own garden. Happy gardening!

Adding an Arbor or Trellis to Your Yard

by: Ellen Bell If you are a home gardener, and you’re looking for a project to tackle this summer that will enhance your garden and your home’s curb appeal, consider adding an arbor or trellis to your yard. Whether in the back yard, garden, patio, or other area, an arbor or trellis will create an ambiance and charm that is well worth the time and investment. The following are some questions and factors you may want to consider before you begin the project of adding an arbor or trellis to your yard. The first question you must ask yourself is whether you want to build your arbor or trellis from scratch, or if you want to purchase a ready to assemble kit. The former will certainly require more tools, knowledge, and time. But for those who enjoy DIY projects and building in general, designing and building your own arbor or trellis can be rewarding. On the other hand, arbor and pergola kits are readily available through many garden stores as well as catalog and online retailers. These kits allow you to assemble your own arbor, pergola or trellis in a matter of days or even hours, providing a much faster means to an end. If you are not someone who enjoys lengthy projects or building things, a ready to assemble kit is probably the better choice. In some cases, the cost of a kit is comparable to what you’d spend if you built the arbor or pergola yourself. The materials can be expensive, and when you factor in the cost of your own time, it may be well worth it to buy a kit and save yourself a lot of time and frustration. The next question you must ask yourself is what

type of arbor or trellis do you want? What look are you trying to achieve? Do you want a grand entrance to the garden area? Or do you want a cozy nook within the garden itself? If you want something that looks clean and sophisticated, you can’t beat the look of white vinyl. It’s clean, contemporary, and many of the vinyl arbors and pergolas available today are virtually maintenance free. A white vinyl arbor also makes a beautiful backdrop for an outdoor wedding! Wood is another good option if you prefer a more rustic or natural look. There are many choices available in wood arbors and trellises. In general, steer away from pine and other soft woods that decay easily. Redwoods like cedar are a very good option because they are naturally weather and decay resistant. Lastly, metal is a good option if you want something extremely durable and long lasting. There are many metal arbors and trellises on the market today. Be careful what type of metal you choose, though. Steel and iron are not the best choices, because rust can be an issue after a few years. Aluminum is an excellent choice because it is lightweight, yet very durable, and it will not rust. Also, look for a metal that is finished with powder coat paint, as this will be the most durable. Whatever you choose, be sure to think your project out well in advance. Projects that are started hastily will usually run into problems before they’re finished. With a little forethought and preparatory planning, you’re sure to end up with a successful result that will add charm and character to your home for years to come.

Alphabet Soup? Nope, Those are Real Estate Agent Designations! by: Joe Cline - Austin Real Estate Broker What do the letters behind a real estate agent’s name stand for? Real estate agents, like doctors, lawyers, and other professionals can ear designations, certifications, and other credentials. These are usually shown by putting a series of initials after the agent’s name. The most common designations and certifications are: Broker, REALTOR, e-Pro, CHMS, GRI, ABR, and CRS. What does an agent have to do to obtain the designation or certification?

e-Pro requires an agent take a class on basic computer skills. It has no real estate content, but ensures your agent can use email and the web. It should really be a bare minimum bar for the technology aptitude of your agent. REALTOR is the one of the easier credentials to obtain (but one of the hardest to live up to). A REALTOR is a real estate agent that belongs to the National Association of REALTORS and agrees to follow the Realtor Code of Ethics. You can read about the code here http://www.realtor.org/ mempolweb.nsf/pages/ Code?OpenDocument Broker is a bit harder to obtain than REALTOR. In Texas, for example, a broker license is required to be able to operate your own real estate company. An agent must have their license for 2 years and complete over 600 hours of real estate education prior to applying for a broker’s license. The broker’s license is granted upon completion of an exam administered by the state. Brokers are basically real estate agents with advanced educations. GRI stands for Graduate Realtor Institute. Less than 50% of agents have this designation. The GRI requires 12 days of continuing education with passing grades on three exams. There are no production or time requirements so an agent can literally earn this designation by sitting in class for 12 days and passing the tests. This designation is in no way a measure of real estate sales experience. ABR stands for Accredited Buyer’s Representative. Less than 30% of agents have this designation. This designation combines 2 days of classroom work and an exam with the requirement that the agent

show proof of at least five buyer sales. This designation shows that the agent has had both formal classroom time and in the field experience. CRS stands for Certified Residential Specialist. Less than 4% of all agents have this designation. This is the most difficult designation to obtain and is a measure of a high degree of formal education and real world transactional experience. To obtain a CRS, the agent must attend three 2-day classes, pass three exams, and provide proof of 25 closed transactions within the last 24 months. While the transaction experience isn’t a huge amount, it does weed out the inexperienced agents and the classes weed out those agents who aren’t dedicated to continuing education. Other designations are out there, but for the most part they are issued by inconsequential groups and have no real bearing on the agent’s abilities and are used more for marketing purposes than anything else.

BUSINESS

Will Presidential Election Affect Your Investments? We have just completed a truly historic election. As a citizen, you’ll want to follow how Presidentelect Obama and the new Congress address issues of importance to you. But as an investor, you might be particularly interested in how the election results can affect your investments, especially given the recent Wall Street turmoil. Based on what happened on November 4, should you make any changes to your portfolio?

To answer that question, you may find it useful to review the history of the financial markets under different political scenarios, according to Ned Davis Research. Since 1901, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has shown an average annualized return of about 12 percent under Democratic presidents, compared to about 8 percent under Republicans. When Democrats have controlled Congress, the Dow’s average annualized return has been about 11 percent, compared to about 8 percent when the Republicans were in control. Since 1925, long-term government bonds have returned more than 7 percent under Republican presidents, compared to about 3.4 percent under Democrats. When Republicans have controlled Congress, the bond market also fared better than when Democrats were in charge. But while it’s interesting to study the past, it’s not necessarily instructive about the future. It’s true that by changing our tax laws, government spending and industry regulations, any given president and Congress can affect economic growth, jobs, interest rates and inflation — and all these factors, in turn, can affect the financial markets. Still, it’s impossible to predict just how these forces will influence the investment world. Political candidates often make promises that never turn into reality, and even if they do, they can have unintended consequences. Ultimately, the free-market forces of our capitalistic system are likely more powerful than political-

forces in determining the ultimate performance of investments. As a country, we have experienced many political changes and upheavals, but, over time, our economy has always proven resilient enough to provide opportunities for those people with the faith to invest for the future. Here’s the bottom line: You don’t need to change your investment style or revamp your portfolio in response to the election results. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should be oblivious to new policies and their potential impact on your investments. In fact, it’s a good idea to review your portfolio at least once a year with your financial advisor, who can recommend any changes that might be beneficial. When you cast your ballot, you supported the candidates who best advocate your concerns on a range of issues. From year to year, these issues may change. But when it comes to your portfolio, it’s always a good idea to “vote” for time-tested techniques, such as buying quality stocks and bonds, holding them for the long term and building an investment mix based on your goals and risk tolerance.

We’re Still the Land of (Investment) Opportunity Over the past several months, you may have become somewhat discouraged at the prospects of investing for your future. Every day, it seems, brings another piece of bad news: stock market volatility, a decline in manufacturing, housing prices in freefall, auto companies teetering on bankruptcy — the list goes on and on. However, despite these distressing headlines, you are still living in a country that is home to the most powerful economic engines in recorded history — and while these engines may currently be stalling a bit, they still offer the power and the potential to successfully drive your investment vehicles. To get a sense of this size and strength, consider the following: If the world population of 6.7 billionpeople were represented by just

OLYMPIC TRADER - www.olytrader.com In the meantime, what should you do? Stick with these tried-and-true strategies: 100 persons, only five of them would live in the United States — but these five would have some pretty big economic clout. In fact, they would own 34 percent of the world’s equity market capitalization and 25 percent of the gross world product, according to Bloomberg News. Furthermore, these five people would be responsible for technological breakthroughs that resulted in electric lights, telephones, airplanes, television, computers, the Internet and much more. And they would produce the world’s largest supply of electrical energy and sit on land that contained nearly half the free world’s known coal reserves, according to the Energy Information Administration. For good measure, they would account for 37 percent of all Nobel Prize winners, according to the Nobel Prize Foundation. Taken together, these and other factors reveal a robust supply of natural resources, intellectual capacity and entrepreneurial spirit — and these assets don’t melt away in any bear market. Instead, they point to the long-term expansion of our economy. And who owns the bulk of these corporations? More than 90 million American shareholders — and more often than not, their patience, discipline and confidence has been rewarded in the long term. What new investment opportunities lie just around the corner? Some await our focus on “green energy.” Others anticipate the reinvestment in our infrastructure, a key element of the Obama administration’s economic stimulus plans. These areas may be promising, but they won’t tell the whole story of the future of investing — because those chapters have yet to be written.

* Look for quality. Seek out quality companies — those with long track records of profitability, strong management teams and competitive products. * Think long term. We’re likely to continue seeing volatility in the markets, though perhaps not to the extremes of the past year. You’ll need to look past these short-term price movements and commit yourself to investing for the long term. Over time, quality investments usually pay off. * Maintain adequate liquidity. If you have a short-term goal — such as paying for college in two or three years — set aside an appropriate amount of money in liquid investments that are likely to preserve your principal. * Stay invested. Don’t take a “time out” from investing. The biggest rallies usually occur early in a bull market, and if you’re on the sidelines, you’ll miss out on these growth opportunities. America’s future is still bright, and yours can be, too — by investing wisely and patiently and by focusing today on your goals for tomorrow. These articles are provide courtesy of Edward Jones. A Positive Attitude is Critical to Your Success by: Larry Easto

Whenever you are faced with something that seems negative, try adopting a more positive attitude...it will help you achieve your desired results. Throughout the ages, virtually everyone has agreed that in order to succeed, we need a positive attitude. There are however 2 things about attitudes that few people discuss. . .

February 2009 bass and decreasing the treble...or vice versa. Similarly, you can adjust your overall attitude by making it more positive... or for reasons I fail to understand...making it more negative. Further, few people...even the most optimistic...are always positive. And even the most pessimistic of people are not negative all the time. . And sometimes even the most positive among us feels more negative than normal. The bottom line on attitudes...they are variable... sometimes more positive...sometimes less positive and more negative. You Can Change Whatever Is Variable While it is definitely possible to shift from a totally negative attitude to a totally positive one, a better approach is to make the change one step at a time. Think of how jarring it is when you adjust the sound system from all bass to all treble, or vice versa...it takes some getting used to. Just as you would adjust your sound system by gradually adding treble... or bass.. you change your attitude by gradually adding more positiveness. As you continue to do this, you will gradually have an increasingly positive attitude. Regardless of the nature of your business your market shifts and changes. Don’t allow these changes to drag you down and drain your time and energy. By adopting a more positive attitude, you can survive whatever changes are occurring...and continue to thrive. To help develop a more positive attitude, focus on completing work that you know can successfully finish. It’s also a good idea to connect with your network contacts, including clients. Discuss new economic developments and how these factors influence local market conditions.

Training and Development Seminars by: Gary Taylor

Training and development seminars play a vital role to the success of a company if implemented correctly across the workforce. Here we look at some techniques that can be used to plan a successful event. The format and agenda of the event are the first key points to consider before implementing a training and development seminar. What is it your wish to communicate to your staff and how are you going to go about it? Is the material appropriate to to rolled out in one go or could if be broken down into phases? Think about how your want to engage the attendees, is the training and development seminar formal or informal? Think about timings, convenience breaks, lunches etc. you want to ensure that the environment you are presenting in is a positive one. This will encourage and influence the attendees to make use of the event rather than see it as a chore. Next you need to be thinking about what you want to achieve from the event; is there a message you want to convey? What response do you want people to give, have you considered how people may interpret what you are communicating? All these points, if considered are crucial to achieving the desired result, you, as the employer hope to achieve. Other factors include, guest speakers, audience involvement and interaction, key learning initiatives and feedback sessions. These other training and development seminar techniques will be covered in further articles, for now though the aim is to bring to the table some form or structure and general roll out of the event and how you can tailor it to maximise results.

Getting Nintendo Wii is Now Every Family’s Affair by: Jay Davis

video available at www.olytrader.com Many parents have been wanting to get some video games them for their kids since they were released. These parents believe that by giving their kids these video games, they will have lesser troubles in dealing with their kids’ bad habit of going to the arcades to spend long hours of play. Ever since, Nintendo has been one of the names that pops up first as far as game console marketing is concerned and has been one of the first names that gets into the mind of parents considering safer gaming experience for their kids. Now, future for Nintendo will surely be even brighter with its Wii System in line. The name Nintendo will mark even more on the mind of parents.

Trivia Question #8: Who appeared in Return of the Killer Tomatoes before he landed a role on ER? a) John Stamos b) George Clooney c) Scott Grimes d) David Lyons (answer on page 12)

The Wii System is a seventh-generation console and a primary competitor of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 in the market. Last year it has conquered the market, was first and actually received great support from people, particularly from parents. It got higher sales than its other aforementioned competitors. According to the NPD Group, the Wii sold more units in the United States than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the first half of this year. At the end of this year, its sales are anticipated to increase even more, being even far better than last year.

Because of the its good features, it has been one of the best-sellers on the gaming market and so has been causing some parents great trouble as they always seem to have their names listed on the waiting list. They still need to use a tracker in order for them to check list of merchants that have some Wiis on stock. At present, Nintedo’s Wii System has proven its worth on the market and its worth to both parents and kids. Right now, both parents and kids are after to having it for them to enjoy, thus becoming a true family affair. To u c h s c r e e n M o b i l e Phones Go to War Blackberry Storm Vs Nokia 5800 by: Matt Sharp

Parents have been supporting the Wii System last year because of its good features and good effects on their kids. It was noted that their kids with use of Wii System have given lesser attention to browsing the internet, texting their friends and most especially have refrained from going to arcades to play.

It’s time for what may seem to be an odd matchup today, but when you think about it, these two particular mobile phones are actually pretty evenly matched, and pitting them against each other DOES make sense. So, let’s settle down watch the action as the Blackberry Storm takes on the Nokia 5800.

Features basically include system being more efficient to use without any other devices needed, and games being better and being even greater than past console games. The games include games familiar to everyone just like bowling, baseball, and tennis. They are really helpful not only for the kids as they get a work on their eye coordination but also for dads and moms as well as they get a workout program. They are totally playable too even by small kids as they are in simple settings or set up. Kids can easily play the games. Some other familiar games are also available. Other adventure-related games for the system will be released soon. Thus, kids will have some other great game options.

Nokia 5800 - touch, feel, play

Also, Wii offers legendary Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Mario, and Metroid, as well as all new classics such as Wii Play and Wii Sports. Creating own Mii character to star in Wii games and playing with friends online over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection are also possible. Not to forget use of the Internet Channel to surf the internet from the comforts of your sofa and even download Nintendo games using the Wii Shop Channel.

The first phone in this battle’s a totally new member of Nokia’s Xpress range of music mobile phones, the gorgeous Nokia 5800. This phone is quite obviously made for music and media, as it has a separate XpressMedia button that pops up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Then, of course, the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touch-sensitive display, to let you use all your media files. Essentially, the Nokia 5800 was created to be a little handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music devices go, this is just about the prettiest. The Nokia 5800 also has, builtin, a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, making it a wonderful all-rounder, as well as a brilliant media box. Oh, and it has a strap to fasten on a fake guitar plectrum. That rocks. It’s also the first mobile phone to use the new Symbian S60 Touch platform, making it the first of a generation. So, with that in mind, let’s pit it against another phone that uses a brand new, touchscreen platform: the gorgeous Blackberry Storm.

Blackberry Storm - more than just a storm in a teacup Up against the Nokia 5800 is the new Blackberry Storm, and although it might seem an odd match-up, in fight terms, it’s not actually as daft as it sounds. For example, both the Nokia 5800 and the Blackberry Storm are the first mobile phones to feature the touch versions of their respective operating systems, with the Blackberry Storm being based, obviously, on the Blackberry OS (well, the touch version of it, anyway). The Blackberry Storm also has a 3 megapixel camera, similar to the 5800, and it has a wealth of multimedia options. Both mobile phones also forgo a physical keyboard, but the Blackberry Storm adds something new to its virtual keyboard (well, to its interface as a whole): a moving, clickable screen. That’s right, the whole screen is clickable like a giant button, making ‘accidentally starting applications by touching the wrong icon’ a thing of the past. Of course, like all of its predecessors, the Blackberry Storm lives for email, as well, and its push email, just like its ancestors, lets you keep in touch with your emails, no matter where.

berry Storm, it’s going to absolutely destroy your thumb muscles after a while, and quite apart from tiring your hands quicker, it also makes it marginally slower to type that email. So, given the fact that it may well physically hurt to use the Storm after a while, the winner, for me, has to be the Nokia 5800.

It Works!

Nokia 5800 vs Blackberry Storm - which one should YOU buy? So, which of these two mobile phones should you go for? Should you go for the more media-oriented Nokia 5800? Or possibly you like the email capabilities of the Blackberry Storm? Well, to a certain extent, it WILL come down to what you want to use it for. The Blackberry Storm is undoubtedly the more capable of the two mobile phones for email. Well, come on, it has Blackberry email access, surely that was never in doubt! However, when it comes to media, the Nokia 5800 is clearly the more capable, with more colours no screen, smoother playback, better music quality, and so on. However, there is one thing you need to know about the Blackberry Storm, because its biggest strength is also its biggest flaw: that clickable touchscreen. It’s innovative, it completely removes the possibility of catching the wrong icon on screen, and it’s not been seen on any other mobile phones before, giving it cool factor. BUT (and it’s a big but), you have to really press down on it; when typing out an email on the Black

TO YOUR HEALTH Do One Thing to Burn Fat Faster by: Sandra Hishinuma

With the New Year comes the old tradition of making resolutions. For many people, those resolutions include taking better care of themselves and losing weight. We have heard time and time again that to lose weight you need to cut your calorie intake and increase your calorie burning capacity. So if we don’t want to starve ourselves, we need to offset our calorie intake by doing the one thing that will help burn fat faster -- exercise.

proteins and muscle mass to prevent weight gain as you age.

Any kind of exercise burns calories while you’re doing it, but the most potent and long-lasting fat burners are created after strength training. That makes your muscles your body’s best bet for optimum fat burning. So now the question is, how do we add more muscle instead of just maintaining what we have? The answer is exercise -- strength training in particular, but also cardiovascular and flexibility training. All three components of exercise are needed to burn fat optimally.

So this year, resolve to be good to your body, do the one thing to lose weight -- exercise (especially strength training) to burn fat faster.

Exercise increases your metabolism so that you burn fat at a higher rate than if you didn’t exercise and reduces your appetite. Exercise stimulates the release endorphins, the chemical that makes you feel good. When released, endorphins give you a sense of control which help to decrease the need to eat out of control. When you exercise and burn fat, you lose the extra weight that puts stress on the joints in your body. You’ll feel less pain in your knees, hips, back and ankles and will help you feel good about exercise so that you will have the desire to exercise more. Muscle is the primary energy consumer for your body. By regularly doing strength training, you create more muscle mass and muscle mass is what you need to help you burn fat. More muscle means your body uses more energy (burns fat) and stores less fat. And that makes it a more efficient exercise for burning fat than cardiovascular training. As you age, your muscle ages too and loses a little bit of the proteins that make up your muscle. Exercise rebuilds and maintains

A good program to follow would be 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day (such as walking) to rebuild stamina and strength-based proteins and 30 minutes of strength/ resistance training a week to rebuild strength-based proteins (two 15-minute sessions or three 10-minute sessions each week would be a good start).

Are You a Candidate for Lasik Surgery? by: Patricia Woloch

For many people who are fed up with wearing contact lenses or glasses on a daily basis, LASIK surgery can be a very attractive alternative. LASIK is a procedure that uses an excimer laser to reshape your cornea to eliminate irregularities and help improve retinal focusing. Laser eye surgery has a very good success rate. The vast majority of LASIK patients have been very happy with the results. However, as with all surgery, the benefits come with their share of risks. Depending on your situation, these risks may or may not be worth the reward for you. It is important to discuss these risks with an experienced laser eye surgeon to determine if you are an ideal candidate for LASIK surgery. The Ideal LASIK Candidate LASIK is ideally suited to improve moderate refractive errors such as: · Nearsightedness

Trivia Question #9: Who was the first feline featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous? a) Morris the Cat b) Geico Gecko c) Spuds McKenzie d) Benji (answer on page 12)

· Farsightedness · Astigmatism

If your refractive errors are very severe (if you have a strong prescription), the surgery may not be as effective. You might want to discuss alternative refractive surgery procedures with your LASIK surgeon if you have a very strong prescription. In general, a good candidate for LASIK: · Is 21 or older · Is in good overall health · Does not have any corneal disease · Is not pregnant or nursing a child · Has reasonable expectations for the results and understands the risks involved Factors that Hurt your Candidacy for LASIK There are several factors that may make laser eye surgery a less-than-ideal option for you. The risks associated with LASIK increase if you have: · An immune system disease: Diseases such as HIV or rheumatoid arthritis, which impact your immune system, may complicate the healing process after surgery. Immune system diseases also increase the likelihood of infection and many other complications following LASIK. · Dry eyes: Dry eyes are a common complication following LASIK. If you chronically experience dry eyes before your surgery, it will most likely prevent proper healing and magnify this complication once surgery is complete. · Severe corneal irregularities: If you have very thin or abnormally shaped corneas, it will be difficult for your ophthalmologist to perform the surgery. There will also be a greater risk of over corrections or under corrections in your surgery. · Unstable vision: Your vision must be stable for at least two years in order to qualify for LASIK surgery. If your vision is currently fluctuating, you should not have the surgery. · Large pupils: Large pupils can lead to serious complications with night vision after LASIK, such as glare, halos, and star bursts.

The Cost Factor One final factor to consider is cost. While LASIK has come down in price over the years, it is still an expensive procedure. Since this is considered elective surgery, most insurance companies will not reimburse you. You may want to make sure that LASIK fits into your budget before choosing to go ahead with the surgery.

Functions of Vitamin C - Vitamin C for Skin by: John Adison

Although vitamin C has long been touted as a preventive measure against the common cold, the available evidence from several large-scale randomized controlled trials does not support this claim. Several studies conducted awhile ago have shown that vitamin C supplementation can enhance certain aspects of immune response such as lymphocyte proliferative response, neutrophil function, and hypersensitivity response, although not all parameters of immunity are enhanced. Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen, an important structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bone. Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood. In addition, vitamin C is required for the synthesis of carnitine, a small molecule that is essential for the transport of fat to cellular organelles called mitochondria, for conversion to energy. So, is vitamin C good for dry skin? The skin, owing to various factors like age, extreme sun exposure, medication, alcohol consumption etc, dehydrates and begins to lose Collagen, which means the body will tend to bruise easier, as well as bleed, and be unable to form supportive scar tissue - a critical factor in healing. It will also result in dryness and the formation of fine lines which consequently causes depression and anxiety. It is an important antioxidant that stops free radicals from harming the body. The excess of free radicals is harmful to the body. This excess can be a result of different oxygen-related reactions in the body caused by some medications, diet,

February 2009 exposure to environmental pollution (chemicals, radiations, cigarette smoke, etc). If they are left unchecked they accumulate in the body and accelerate the aging process. Free radicals can ultimately lead to serious disease including cancer, cardiac problems, a range of inflammatory conditions like arthritis, etc. Vitamin C performs various immunity functions; it helps in wound healing and prevents infections from spreading. Vitamin C is essential to prevent scurvy and for sperm production. It provides energy and aids in the production of certain hormones that help to fight-off stress. It also protects against heart ailments. It addition, it is essential for the formation and health of cartilage, skin, and blood vessels and helps our body to easily excrete toxins. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen, the elastic tissue in skin that declines with age. If you want glowimg skin. Avoid direct sun light- by wearing protective clothing, staying on the shade and applying sunscreen daily. Avoid or limit your toxins intake this includes alcohol, coffee, spicy food, drugs, limit sugar intake etc. Exercise regularly, to reduce stress and brings more oxygen to your skin resulting in firmer and nourished skin. Maintain a cleansing routine- remove makeup daily (do not wash more than two times a day), and get a facial every 7-10 days.

How to Quit Smoking

by: Linda Joy Allan You’ve made the decision to quit smoking you say? Make sure you really want to quit this time. Decide you’re going to quit no matter how scary you think it will be or how much you think you’ll miss smoking. Some people say “I really would like to quit but (you can fill in the words here)….” It’s a definite decision to want to quit. Your have to feel it! Know it! You have to be able to say honestly to yourself ---yes, I can do this! Secondly, you need to consider that there may be difficult times in the beginning stages of quitting smoking. But there may NOT be. How can I say that? For me personally, I sort of sailed through quitting smoking. After 28 years of smoking just about every day (that’s 10, 220 days!) I quit seemingly with little effort. It’s true. It

wasn’t difficult for me. I’ll explain in a moment how it happened in my situation. Oh, I remember how great smoking was! And even though I didn’t think about quitting smoking hardly ever (because it was too painful to even THINK of giving up smoking), in the innermost part of me, I wanted to not be a slave to cigarettes anymore. 28 years was enough. Lastly, and the most important in my opinion, is to incorporate some quiet time---whether it’s prayer, meditation or yoga---into your daily and/or hourly life. I say this because you need to calm your mind down or it will be full of negative and scary thoughts about quitting smoking. Personally (and this just sort of happened in my situation without any work on my part), the morning that became the first day of my not smoking ever again---I remember how there was a calmness about me (I really think it was Divine help if you were to ask me) that seemed to come out of nowhere. When the thoughts started coming into my mind like “it’s time to have your cigarette now. It’s bedtime”, I wouldn’t let the sentence finish. I would hear in my mind “it’s time to have your……” and I’d gently let my mind rise to a peaceful place and deliberately not finish the sentence. I did this for days, then weeks. Finally one day months later I realized I hadn’t thought of smoking for an entire day. I also want to say that, know you can do hard things. So what if it’s hard? You can do it anyway. You must have realized by now that the difficult things in life are usually---or always--the most rewarding? But, hey, it wasn’t difficult for me and you could experience something similar to what I did when I quit smoking. On a personal note, I can’t tell you what freedom I have, now that I’m a nonsmoker and have been for 8 years. I don’t have to plan where to have my next cigarette, sneak out so no one will see me because I’m embarrassed to be a smoker, pay the ridiculous prices for cigarettes, etc. I still like the smell of a cigarette sometimes, but I will never pick one up to smoke again because the freedom is out of this world!

The next time that you experience a cold or the flu, remember this: giving your body plenty of rest while allowing the cold or flu to run its course is good for your health. Conventional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry would have you believe that there is no “cure” for the common cold, that you should protect yourself against the flu with a vaccine that is laden with toxic chemicals, and that during the midst of a cold or flu, it is favorable to ease your discomfort with a variety of medications that can suppress your symptoms. Unfortunately, all three of these positions represent a lack of understanding of what colds and flus really are, and what they mean to your body. Here is the key to understanding why colds and flus, when allowed to run their course while you rest, can be good for you: By and large, the viruses that cause the common cold and the flu infect mainly your weakest cells; cells that are already burdened with excessive toxins are most likely to allow viruses to infect them. These are cells that you want to get rid of anyway, to be replaced by new, healthy cells. So in the big scheme of things, a cold or flu is a truly natural tool that can allow your body to purge itself of old and damaged cells. Have you ever been amazed by how much “stuff” you could blow out of your nose while you had a cold or the flu? Embedded within all of that mucous are countless dead cells that your body is saying good bye to. So you see, there never needs to be a cure for the common cold, since the common cold is nature’s way of keeping you healthy over the long term. And so long as you get plenty of rest and strive to stay hydrated and properly

nourished during a cold or flu, there is no need to get vaccinated or to take medications that suppress congested sinuses, a fever, or coughing. All of these uncomfortable symptoms are actually ways in which your body works to eliminate waste products and/or help your body get through a cold or flu. Curious about how to differentiate the common cold and the flu? A cold usually comes on gradually - over the course of a day or two. Generally, it leaves you feeling tired, sneezing, coughing and plagued by a running nose. You often don’t have a fever, but when you do, it’s only slightly higher than normal. Colds usually last three to four days, but can hang around for 10 days to two weeks. Flu, on the other hand, comes on suddenly and hits hard. You will feel weak and tired and you could run a fever as high as 104o. Your muscles and joints will probably ache, you will feel chilled and could have a severe headache and sore throat. Getting off the couch or out of bed will be a chore. The fever may last three to five days, but you could feel weak and tired for two to three weeks. Because the common cold and the flu are both causes by viruses, antibiotics are not necessary. People who take antibiotics while suffering with a cold or flu often feel slightly better because antibiotics have a mild anti-inflammatory effect. But this benefit is far outweighed by the negative impact that antibiotics have on friendly bacteria that live throughout your digestive tract. In this light, if you really need help with pain management during a cold or flu, it is usually better to take a small dose of acetaminophen than it is to take antibiotics. And remember, giving your body plenty of rest while allowing the cold or flu run its course is good for your overall health.

TRAVEL

A Luxury Alaskan Cruise is a Great Vacation Choice by: Andrew Bicknell

When most people think of a luxury cruise their thoughts turn to tropical ports of call surrounded by crystal blue waters. Alaska is not always the first destination most people think of when choosing a cruise, but those who do visit this largest of states aboard ship will tell you it is not to be missed. There is a rawness to this land that is hard to describe without seeing it and a cruise will give you a view that most people will never see. Depending on how adventurous you are there are several ways to enjoy the experience of an Alaskan cruise. For the more adventurous soul who wants to explore every nook and cranny of a particular area there are day charters on small boats available. While they may be short on comfort and amenities these day charters allow you to get up close and personal with everything this land has to offer. For those more inclined to sit back and enjoy the scenery from farther out and in more comfort then a large cruise ship is the answer. Carrying upwards of three thousand people these large floating hotels are the picture of pampered comfort where your every want and need is taken care of by an attentive staff. Depending on the length of the cruise you will also get the chance to visit several ports of call where you can take part in different shore excursions, one of which might include a day trip on a small boat charter. Once you get off the ship you will not be lacking in things to do. Many of the

ports of call have a very old west rustic feel to them. You can also take hikes through the temperate rain forests that run along the rugged coastline, go watch brown bears catch salmon during their yearly spawning run, or charter a fishing boat and go catch some salmon or halibut yourself. And the best part is that while you are doing these things you will be surrounded by some of the most pristine wilderness on the face of the earth. There is one experience on a cruise to Alaska that you will not experience anywhere else; visiting one of the many glaciers that tumble directly into the sea. A cruise will normally offer two ways to enjoy the glacier experience. You can watch from on board ship as huge chunks of ice break free from the glaciers face and plunge into the water or you can take a guided trip and actually walk across this vast moving river of ice. The wilderness of Alaska is vast and largely untamed, making any trip there a true adventure. How you choose to see it is up to you but an Alaskan luxury cruise can be a truly memorable experience.

Head northeast from Florence 120km and entering the Emilia Romagna region, you come to Bologna. Frequently overlooked by many tourists because of its stunning neighbours, this city oozes a charm all of its own. Expect more grit and general hustle and bustle then the others, but as the youngest city in Italy as the Italians refer to it, it makes up for it with an effervescent energy that is palpable. This is probably in part because it houses one of the largest universities in Europe, attended by 100,000 people. During the day there are some interesting places to visit including the Museo Civico Archeologico which house Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian artifacts and has two burial chambers on display complete with skeletons. On a similar morbid theme there is the Archiginnasio, an anatomy theatre first built in 1647 and entirely out of wood. It was used to dissect human bodies as part of Renaissance scientific investigation but had to be reconstructed after a World War 2 bomb tore it apart. In the evening is when this city really comes to the fore however. As a student town you can expect plenty of clubs and lively bars but there are also a host of great eateries and more sophisticated wine-bars to choose from.

everywhere. From Moorish to Gothic and Roman architecture, this small city is crammed full of museums and places to visit such as the spectacular Duomo Cathedral and circular Baptistery, the largest of its kind in Italy. Move out of the city though and there´s a wealth of different experiences to soak up from wine tasting to soaking in a natural mineral spa, catching some fresh air in one of the natural parks or breathing in the unforgettable smell of freshly cooked Italian food, while strolling on a seaside promenade. Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport is the main point of entry for international visitors into the region and from here, Tuscany is best enjoyed under your own steam. There are several Pisa Airport car hire firms for you to choose from and these are Autoeuropa, Avis, Budget, Easycar, Europcar, Hertz, Liberty, Locauto, Maggiore, Sixt, Targarent and Thrifty. One of the most obvious ports of call is of course Florence, 100km and roughly an hour and 20 minutes drive east of Pisa Airport. As the capital of Tuscany and the birthplace of Renaissance, it is fittingly spectacular. Its best known landmark it the domed Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral which towers over the city and is the largest brick and mortar dome in the world. Nearby are the Campanile and Baptistery buildings which are similar architectural gems. In fact, the whole of Florence is a visual treat and beauty exudes which is why the old centre of Florence itself, contained within medieval walls as it is, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

If after all that smoke and noise you crave some clean, fresh air and nature then 105km away, a journey of an hour and a quarter, is Parma. Here there are several parks, the best of which is the Parco Ducale. Originally the private gardens of the Dukes, you can stroll to your heart´s content through this leafy, green retreat full of statues and pond, with a cafe open during the summer months. The elegantly majestic Palazzo Pilotta is close by and although first built in the 16th century, was radically transformed a few hundred years later. Housed within is also the Galleria Nazionale which boasts works of art from Leonardo, Parmigianino, Carracci, Murillo, Van Dyck and Tiepolo. Of course the city is famous for its Parma ham so there´s no better place to sample this moreish treat.

Located forty miles north of Olympia on Highway 101 on the rural Olympic Peninsula, the winery boasts a dazzling view of the Olympic Mountains and Hood Canal, as portrayed on the wine label. Dick and Peggy Patterson, both former Washington educators, purchased the winery site in 1978. The Grove Restaurant, Tavern and Resort, replete with cabins, originally stood on the locale. Dick started out as a home winemaker and the hobby got out of control. Hoodsport Winery was originally known for their fruit wines in the early 1980s, specializing in raspberry and rhubarb. From the mid 80s varietals were added to the line, such as Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, and Lemberger-Cab. In 2005 the Winery introduced the Orca Series wine. The whale on the label is an adaptation of “Orca”, the creation of artist Clarence Mills, a member of the Haida Nation of British Columbia. The Orca wines have become an important part of the

winery’s portfolio. Not forgetting their roots, Hoodsport continues to experiment with fruit wines. New this year are Pear, Apple and Blackberry wines. Also available are three Port-style fruit wines: Raspberry, Loganberry and Cranberry. These are fruit wines with grape neutral spirits added, resulting in a sweeter wine with a bit more alcohol.
