PRESIDENT’S MEMO

Dear Fellow Olympians, I have some important news to share from the Board Room: we have just approved the Service Member Initiative. This program is effective as of July 1, 2016 for qualifying new members.

Essentially, active U.S. Military, or honorably discharged U.S. Military, active sworn law enforcement or firefighters are eligible to join the Club and pay the initiation fee over an extended payment schedule. In addition, his/her admission will be accelerated. For this year, the first 25 applicants will be considered.

I am sure we all have a number of friends interested in joining the Club under this initiative.

This allows the Club to honor our heritage and tradition, as some of our founding fathers served the City in these capacities long ago.

In fact, our first home was a firehouse. Please feel free to email our Membership Office at membership@olyclub.com with any questions.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the Junior Caddie Program commenced once again.

This program supports 15 San Francisco high school students who need to complete at least 25 rounds as a caddie to be eligible for the Evans Scholarships. I would like to encourage all our members to take advantage of this program and help deserving students achieve their goal of going to college. I have met a number of the kids this year and can say with confidence it will change your life for the better and put this (sometimes frustrating) game of golf into perspective. This is another opportunity for Olympians to make a difference. The Committee interviewed a number of candidates, all of whom demonstrated the skills, passion and dedication to serve. Thank you to everyone who served on the selection committee and to the individuals who stepped up for consideration. Members will once again have the opportunity to volunteer for this Championship event. With the leadership of Erika and Dennis, I am sure the Club will be represented in an exemplary manner during this historic event and make us all proud.

I am regularly approached about the status of the Lakeside Master Plan (LMP). With the lack of visible activity, many believe that we have abandoned the plan. This is not the case. There are several steps involved in this long-term project, most of which involve working behind the scenes with architects, potential contractors, the City and Planning departments, along with staff and our Committees. We have prioritized the Golf Maintenance facility and Lakeside Clubhouse renovation as the two most pressing projects.

We are trying to determine the extent and scope of what we can do in the Clubhouse initially. So, in brief, the LMP is a work in progress with several moving parts and it will take time before visible signs of work begin. We want to make sure this plan is implemented diligently and responsibly.

We celebrate another milestone in the Club’s history this month with the 40th anniversary of the Trans Tahoe Relay. Olympians have been participating in this annual event,

swimming across Lake Tahoe, since 1976.

This is one of the most unique open water swimming events in the world. You can read about the history and evolution of this storied event starting on page 5.

Congratulations to Gregor Main who qualified at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying event held on the Ocean Course and Lake Merced on June 6 with the score of 134. He went on to play in the Open at Oakmont Golf Club June 16–19, after press time for this issue. Main played college golf at UCLA, turned pro in 2012 and has already played in four PGA Tour events. He has also played in six Web.com events, making three cuts. Olympian Randy Haag caddied for him and continued to carry his bag at Oakmont.

We are right in the middle of summer and there are a multitude of activities around the Club. I certainly hope that you find opportunities to participate in the various events in the Club this month.

TRANS TAHOE RELAY CELEBRATES 40 YEARS HOW THE RELAY STARTED AND HOW IT HAS EVOLVED INTO THE PREMIER EVENT IT IS TODAY

T

he clear waters of Lake Tahoe gently nip the shore of Sand Harbor State Park, a sanctuary of sandy, boulderdotted beaches and variety of coniferous trees.

Endless ranks of snow-capped mountains stand in the background, just slightly larger inversions of the lake’s 1,644-foot depth. It is nearly 7am. The sun is up, barely, while the air and water remain icy cold.

On this day, the deep blue lake brims with the sights and sounds of motorboats filled with anxious swimmers, each carrying relay teams waiting to cross 11 miles from Nevada to California. At 6,200 feet above sea level, the thin air adds to the challenge.

Soon begins the Trans Tahoe Relay, a contest virtually without peer in open water swimming. On July 16, nearly 1,500 athletes will mark the 40-year celebration of The Olympic Club’s world-renowned competition.

FRANK COGHLAN AND THE ORIGINAL TWELVE In 1974, Olympian and swimmer Frank Coghlan looked over the blue waters of Lake Tahoe and its stunning mountain views and decided it would be a good place for a race.

Despite the 50 to 60 degree water and the altitude, Coghlan wasn’t intimidated; he and his friends had already been swimming the rough, choppy waters of Lake Tahoe and the San Francisco Bay for years.

Known as “Double Dip Frank,” Coghlan once swam both the New York Harbor Verazzano Narrows and across the San Francisco's Golden Gate in the same day.

In 1974, when he was 50, he made headlines

crossing Lake Tahoe in six hours and 37 minutes, beating the previous record by four minutes. Coghlan swam nearly every day until he was 80 years old. The South End Rowing Club, which he was a member of for more than five decades, holds a swim in his honor every year, while San Francisco has named a beach after him, Coghlan Beach, about a mile and a half off of the shores of Alcatraz Island.

With such a pedigree, it's little surprise that Coghlan was able to rally two teams of six, representing the Dolphin Club and the South End Rowing Club, for the proposed Tahoe crossing. “It was more of a social event at that time,” said Bill Foehr, one of the original swimmers. “There was a bar on the beach and then we'd have a barbecue at Frank’s house.”

“As I recall, we did the first couple of years very ad hoc,” recounted Phil Ward another of the early compettiors. “It was just the two teams.”

competitive race. The official winning time was five hours and 40 minutes.

Coghlan and Foehr were joined by friends Tim Reid, Leland Faust, Bob Gogin, George Harrison, Mickey Lavelle, Tom McCarty, Ed Rudloff, Jeff Wagner and Ward. Making use of their rough water race experience from the English Channel to the Maui Channel, these 12 swam the original course, from Glenbrook to Chambers Landing, a staggering 13 miles with wooden row boats guiding their way.

In 1978, under commissioner Faust, the OC took over official sponsorship. Members like McCarty helped changed the event from a small invitational to a larger open race, pushing for an expanded field and introducing modern motor boats which were used during the Maui Channel swim. “It was revolutionary to do it in the Lake,” McCarty remembered.

In 1978, one of the Club’s teams broke the old record by a staggering 50 minutes.

TRANS TAHOE: A LEGEND IN THE MAKING

The competition drew in Olympic gold medalists including Steve Clark and Thompson Mann, and soon dozens of teams joined in the fun. Over the past decade, the number of relay squads has zoomed past 200.

“We had people who were here from other countries, [such as] Australia, we had the Hawaiian swimmers, and others who heard about the race and thought it seemed like a good idea to join,” Ward recounted.

Trans Tahoe changed its starting and finishing locations in 1997, making its slightly shorter. The race now begins at Sand Harbor, but even at this larger location it has to be started in smaller flights organized by age grades.

Up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, weather is always a worry. Thunderstorms sometimes postpone the start. “One year we got snowed out. They called the Relay off,” explained Reid. The next day, one of the teams tried to brave the waters, but was driven back by icy, white-capped waves. “The air temperature was really cold and you start getting the whitecaps on the surface of the water… so when you get a lot of wind action it just stirs up all that cold water, and you're cold for the entire half-hour swim,” said Reid.

Acclimating can be a problem virtually any time. Ward says a lot of newcomers are shocked by the water. “They're all very good swimmers, but they’re often only able to train in the pool. There’s a romantic notion about the open-water relay, with an assumption that it’s very doable if they’ve pool trained enough,” he explained. “But then they dive into that lake ... essentially your chest contracts, you can't breathe, you have to swim with your head up because you can't exhale underwater…. Some people, if they don't know that's going to happen... I've seen very good swimmers who get in the Lake and just can't do it. “The cold water is tough, and so is the altitude,” says Joan Schriger, who along with Lynn Jolly and Sherri Hanna were the first three females to swim for the Club in 1993.

Since then, Schriger has swum the Relay every year except one — when she was eight months pregnant with her daughter. “It can be easy to get very short of breath at the start of your leg of the relay — hitting the cold water combined with adrenaline — but it's important not to panic and just give your body time to settle in.

You have to be good-spirited about the event.”

Despite, or perhaps because of these challenges, the race has grown steadily, attracting champion swimmers and teams from all over the country and sometimes abroad. Many return year after year. In recent summers, Trans Tahoe has been nearly certain to sell out, the 250-team limit necessary for the competitors’ own safety.

HOW DOES THIS RACE WORK? A team’s age grade is determined by the total combined ages of the swimmers on the boat, and the flights depart the beach in predetermined order. The first flight sets out at 7:30am, adrenaline temporarily surmounting

lactic acid as the competitors strive to the get to the front of the pack. Three more waves follow at 10-minute intervals.

“If you were to come out and watch, I would suggest you go down to the beach and watch the start,” advised Joe Ferrero, a swimmer who has competed in the Trans Tahoe Relay almost 30 times. “It's some kind of controlled chaos… It's almost the most exciting part of the day.”

Particularly for the leadoff swimmer coming from the beach, it’s easy to lose one’s way in the rough and sometimes crowded waters, trying to swim around boats and other competitors while sighting the mountain peaks on the California side of the Lake.

The boat’s job is to keep their swimmers on track, guiding them as they try to stay in a straight line toward Tahoe City’s Skylandia Beach — easier said than done.

Reid, a competitor for the South End Rowing Club during the first Trans Tahoe Relays, recalls the boat’s captain fighting to keep teammate Foehr heading in the correct direction.

“He'd jump in the water, the other swimmer would touch him, you'd turn off the boat motor... the finishing swimmer would start to climb aboard, and all of a sudden Bill would make a hard left turn and he'd be way off course.

He'd be headed down toward South Shore, so then you'd have to go racing over to cut him off, and he'd have swum 75 yards going due south.”

At the end of 30 minutes, the relay transitions to the second leg, with all of the boats switching off their motors as the second

swimmer hops in the water and tags the first before setting off. And so it goes until each of the six athletes has taken a turn. Then the swimmers go back in for 10-minute legs, in the same order, again and again, until they reach the finish line (the legs used to be set up at 30-, 15- and 10-minute intervals, but now it is 30 and 10). Somewhere between three hours and 15 minutes and three and a half hours later, the fastest competitors will arrive in Tahoe City. Four hours unofficially sets apart the elite teams. Each team must compete the course within six hours, but most will have long since arrived.

Skylandia’s shoreline is actually buzzing with recreational boats and casual swimmers, since the race never closes down public use of the Relay’s course. It causes some chaos for the already exhausted swimmers, but luckily the

amount of effort to prepare for this race has kept its track record of zero major injuries.

“People do watch it, and it gets pretty good publicity up there,” says Ed Rudloff, a swimmer who has been part of the race for decades. “Of course, the restaurants and hotels really benefit from it. In that respect, it's a positive for Lake Tahoe. Absolutely.”

The Relay also raises money for the Tahoe County Public Utilities District, the Nevada Parks and Keep Tahoe Blue, ensuring the Lake remains beautiful and clean for years to come.

This story isn’t entirely unique — the sense of a tight-knit community is prevalent throughout the whole of the race. Raven’s parallels a similar sentiment to Schriger, who commented that a keeping a good spirit is important because not all goes according to plan. “Tenacity is a good one too, because it is hard,” she added. “And camaraderie is essential — you're in a small boat for a long time dealing with tough circumstances.

It's important to be there for each other.”

More than a race, there is something deeply beautiful about the swim across Lake Tahoe. “You're out there with your friends, enjoying the beauty of the Lake and the beauty of the mountains around you; to me it's a special thing,” Ferrero said. “What I love about the race, is the time spent with the people — not necessarily where you finish in the race.” Olympian and Trans Tahoe swimmer since 1984, Phyllis Quinn, absolutely agrees: “Every year and every team is a different story,

but it’s always a great day on the Lake with people who share your passion.”

A large portion of the swimmers, the organizing committee and the other coordinators have been with the race for many years; the sheer number of participants that have been involved in the Relay for decades is staggering. “I don't plan to stop doing it in the foreseeable future,” Rudloff said.

From its humble beginnings as a simple, two-team race, the Trans Tahoe Relay has become a giant, respected and coveted rough water race. There is nothing else quite like it in the whole world. The impact of this race is seen everywhere, from the local economy to the friends and families that join together to see the races and cheer on their teams. But not only has the Relay left its mark on Lake Tahoe, it has also left quite a mark in the hearts of those closest to it. 

ow that Executive Chef Marc Passetti has settled in to his role leading the kitchen at Lakeside, it’s time to see what is on the menu in the Main Dining Room. The dinner menu was completely overhauled in recent months and the lunch menu had a few items updated this month. The a la carte menu is available for lunch on Tuesdays and lunch and dinner on Fridays.

New lunch options include: chopped salad, chicken pot pie, eggplant sandwich, NY strip steak and more.

Nearly 200 craft beer enthusiasts made their way to the Club’s Craft Beer Festival on June 10. Some of the most popular brewers in the City brought their wares right to the Club, including Almanac, Fort Point, Speakeasy, Bare Bottle and Magnolia. Triple Voodoo even created a special blend exclusively for this event — King Leo Belgium Stout with De La Paz Coffee. Almanac delighted sour beer fans by pouring a couple of additional sours as a surprise!

Executive Chef Derek Ingraham worked with each brewer to design food pairings for each selection, so members and guests were treated to dishes like lobster ragout, pork carnitas, Kobe sliders, Peking Duck and more. Since it was also Game 3 of the NBA Finals with the Warriors still chasing their second title in a row, TVs were brought in so no fans had to miss the action.

O

n May 21 at Lakeside, supporters of The Olympic Club Foundation enjoyed the 10th Annual Ultimate Wine Dinner and Auction. More than 200 revelers came out for an elegant evening featuring premier California vintners and an epicurean dinner, as well as live and silent auctions offering extraordinary wine packages, private tasting opportunities and unique travel experiences.

During the reception and silent auction, attendees were treated to a champagne toast

by Moet & Chandon and wines poured by Orin Swift, Selby Winery, Darioush, Peju and more. The four-course dinner was created

by Michelin-star chef Ken Frank, owner of La Toque, Napa Valley.

As part of the evening’s presentation during dinner, Tavita Moimoi, Jr., a middle-school football and basketball player with a 4.0 GPA from LEMO Foundation — an OCF grantee, shared some his family's story of immigration and his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.

CUBAN AMBASSADOR ALZUGARAY SAYS CUBA “STRONG IN THEIR IDENTITY”

W

hen Cuban Ambassador Carlos Alzugaray came to City Clubhouse to share his knowledge about Cuba as part of the Club’s Speaker Luncheon series, OC President John Espiritu welcomed the crowd, lauding the great opportunity to “hear first-hand about the ever-changing relationship between the U.S. and Cuba.”

Espiritu’s own father served as a diplomat and he said he learned many things from him.

“I learned from my father to never play poker with a diplomat.”

Once he stepped to the podium, Alzugaray explained the biggest changes occurring there now. The most obvious being the changes to the economic landscape. “There needs to be an establishment of real new economic structure,” he said.

He pointed out another adjustment being the “generational transition of power.” He spoke highly of this new generation of leaders, explaining how they will be the ones leading the way to a better exchange of ideas across borders. He told the crowd that there has been a proposal recently to put a high speed internet cable between Havana and Miami.

He talked a bit about the “twisted political system,” yet informed the audience of all the positives that are already percolating with this new relationship, saying, “We must start knowing each other better.”

Alzugaray graduated from Havana University in 1965. He holds a master’s degree in contemporary history (1997) and a Ph.D. on the history of international relations (1998) from the University of Havana.

Professionally, he has been a member of the Cuban Foreign Service (1961–96), a professor of international relations at different Cuban institutions (1980–2012), and an editor and member of the Advisory Council of the Cuban social science and humanities journal Temas (Topics) (since 2010). At present, he is a member of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists, an independent international 20 The Olympic Club | July 2016

affairs analyst and an advisor for New Cuban Consulting, a business consultant firm.

In the Foreign Service, Alzugaray served in Cuban Embassies and Consulates in Japan, Bulgaria, Argentina, Canada, Ethiopia and Belgium. From 1992–94 he was Advisor to the Cuban Foreign Minister on global political affairs and from 1994–96 Ambassador, Chief of Mission to the European Union. He was a member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences between 2000

and 2012 and a member of the Executive Committee of the Latin American Political Science Association between 2002–10.

“Cuba will remain Cuba, we are strong in our identity,” explained Alzugaray. “The U.S. is our closet neighbor, why shouldn’t they be our best friend? We need to continue having a respectful relationship. It reminds me of something which Robert Frost said, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’ So, let’s talk.” 

One night a year for more than 32 years, members of The Olympic Club have gathered on the third Wednesday in May to push their physical limits and test themselves. It is inspiring to see athletes and weekend warriors alike come together one night to attempt to break and or set personal records. This year, 33 records were broken and five new records were set.

It is clear that this night is more just setting records but rather an inspiring demonstration of members supporting each other and cheering one another on, in the true spirit of what it is to be an Olympian. The Fitness Staff would like to thank everyone who turned out to participate in the Strength & Fitness Championships.

“We are extremely proud of every person who participated and grateful for those who came out to support our athletes,” said Fitness Manager Carmen Solla. “This was our first year going digital and it was a success, thank you for signing up online. Movement (advanced): From the side plank, lower your hips towards the ground for a three count and shoot your hips up in a one count.

Movement: Press the handle straight out, so that your arms are straight and your hands are in line with the cable machine. Hold the position. The cable will try to pull you to the side, but if you keep your abs flexed and butt squeezed you’ll stay facing forward.

For those of you who are now worried that the sit-ups done every year at the Strength and Fitness Championships have ruined your body, do these two mobility drills after and you’ll be fine:

BANDED HIP DISTRACTION

Tie a band around something at about knee height. Step one leg into the band and lunge that leg back so that that side’s knee is down on the ground. Squeeze your butt and flex your abs and let the band pull your hips forward. Repeat on the other side.

THORACIC EXTENSION OVER A ROLLER

Start with the foam roller under your back, just under your shoulder blades. Press your hips into the air and lean back over the foam roller so your head touches the ground behind you. Take a deep breath into your diaphragm and squeeze your butt. Keeping your butt squeezed, exhale and flex your abs as you drop your hips until your head starts to come off the ground and you return to the start position. Do a couple of breaths at different spots in the upper half of your back.

IT'S SUMMERTIME AND THE WATER IS FINE For the rough water swim team, the season kicked off in May with a nice social for more than 25 swimmers. At the event, Commissioner Kurt Oeler outlined the team’s upcoming schedule — which is jam packed — starting with the yearly kick-off at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa. Throughout June, many members have participated in a variety of events, including Lake Berryessa, and scored points for the Club. It all leads up to this month’s peaking event: the 40th Trans Tahoe Relay.

At the Berryessa swim, there were many highlights — the biggest being that 11 Olympians participated in both of the two contests: a two-mile swim followed by a one-mile race held approximately 30 minutes later. The water was pleasantly warm at 75˚ (four degrees higher than at Spring Lake), so it made the double bill doable for those 11 swimmers.

For perspective: this month at the Trans Tahoe Relay, the water temperature will be around 60! You can read about the history of the Relay on page 5.

Commissioner Oeler was also instrumental in rallying everyone to sign-up for the Pacific Masters Open Water Championships to be held at Donner Lake in August.

This event had limited sign-ups, so it was critical to get members on board early so that the Club would have enough swimmers to make a good point showing. The season continues after the Open Water Championships. The end of season’s event on Waikiki Beach is the annual one- and two-mile swims ending near the Outrigger Canoe Club.

At the 17th Annual Cutino Awards dinner honoring the male and female collegiate water polo players of the year on June 4, long-time Club member Andy Burke served as the foil for keynote speaker Bruce Watson. Currently the head coach at San Jose State University and a former Olympic Club coach, Watson had many anecdotes about his time working with and around Burke over the years.

The award winners were goalie Garrett Danner from University of California Los Angeles and Stephania Haralabidis from University of Southern California.

SOFTBALL FINISHES SECOND IN FIELD OF 64

The OC "Greys" softball team came within one win of bringing a San Francisco Softball Championship Trophy back to the Club. The squad led by player-coach Lou Alessandria is called the Greys to differentiate it from the other OC softball teams.

The name is appropriate, however, as the majority on the roster are in their 50s or close. Competing in the Open DD division, the Greys battle against teams whose players average nearly half their age. Although not as swift as their young opponents, the old guys can really play.

The OC finished the regular season with an 8–0 record and outscored its opponents by a league-leading 87 runs. Of the 64 teams that started the season, 18 advanced to the playoffs in a

single elimination format where four consecutive wins were needed to win it all. The OC sailed through the first two rounds and advanced to the semi-finals where the two winners met on the same night for the Championship.

In the semis, the OC came out swinging and jumped out to a big early lead. The OC offense is stacked with players who can hit and they continued to rack up runs. The opponent had scored 35 runs in the quarterfinal so no lead was viewed as big enough.

The OC defense has been solid all season and in the semi was nearly flawless. The game ended early due to the "mercy rule" with the OC winning 28–8.

Falling short of a City Championship was disappointing but the OC players quickly acknowledged all they had accomplished with an 11–1 record and runner-up finish out of 64 teams.

There is no time dwell on the "what-ifs" as the summer season kicks off for the Greys and the OC's five other talented softball teams which all will be competing in their respective divisions for the next City Championship. 

More than 60 Olympians came to Pebble Beach to represent the Club in the 2016 Don Bering Cup.

BERING CUP COMES BACK TO OC The OC came out firing on all cylinders for the 53rd Annual Don Bering Cup over Memorial Day Weekend. They aimed to bring the Cup back and they were victorious. This annual interclub match between the OC and Pebble Beach is the longest consecutive interclub west of the Mississippi, featuring 80 doubles matches over two days.

Pebble Beach claimed the cup in 2015, so OC was seeking revenge in 2016. Day 1 featured spirited play by the Olympians, staking a formidable 28–12 lead after the first 40 matches were completed.

Day 2 was a closer contest, with OC winning 21–19, for a final tally of 49–31.

Congrats to all those who participated on this year’s squad! It was a memorable weekend, from the play on court, to the Saturday night dinner/dance, to the members new and old that came together to bring the cup back home. 

MIXED-DOUBLES TENNIS TO GO TO FIRST NATIONALS OC Tennis will reach yet another milestone marker in 2016, sending its first-ever mixed doubles team to the Nationals this coming November. The Club’s mixed 40+ 9.0 team headed to Tahoe in late May for the Sectional Championships, coming away with a 3–0 record in group play, followed by semifinal and final round victories, qualifying themselves for the national championships in Arizona in November.  OC 40 & Over Mixed 9.0 Team — 2016 Sectional Champions

POSITIVE COACHING ALLIACE TAUGHT JUNIORS & PARENTS TO BE SUPPORTIVE TRIPLE-IMPACT ATHLETES In an ongoing effort to make sure the Club is developing the best athletes, students and citizens, the Club again hosted the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) on June 13 at City Clubhouse.

Parents and their junior athletes were split into two groups, with parents learning how to better support their athlete’s development and juniors learning how to encourage each other and themselves.

Kathy Toon, a former Division 1 NCAA tennis coach and author of Get Your Game Face On!, talked to parents about asking questions and encouraging their kids to teach them about their sports.

She asked each of them to channel what their kid looks like when they are confident and happy, then demonstrate the dejection when they make a mistake. The difference is obvious, but after asking where they learn that behavior she explained they mimic their parents.

BACK TO THE BASICS GREENSIDE BUNKER SHOTS Since the Lake Course bunkers have recently been renovated, I thought now would be a great time for a refresher course on greenside bunker shots.

BOUNCE

The “Bounce” of a club is extremely important when it comes to bunker shots. “Degrees of Bounce” is how much lower the trailing edge of the sole of the wedge is in relation to the leading edge. Wedges are designed to reduce resistance to the sand when hitting behind a ball in a bunker allowing the club to “slide through” the sand rather than “dig in” to it. Hence, the softer or deeper the sand, the more bounce required. Less bounce is needed if the bunker has very little sand or is hard packed.

CLUBS

When choosing the right club for bunker shots, I highly recommend you carry two wedges with different bounce on them, allowing for you to handle all conditions.

ff A 58/60 degree lob wedge with very little bounce is the perfect club for tight lies. ff A 56/54 degree sand wedge with a lot of bounce is the right club for soft sand and fluffy lies.

THE SET UP ff Dial the clubface open before gripping the club. ff Ball position is off of the forward heel. ff Assume a nice wide stance parallel and left of the target. ff Be sure not to open stance to the target. ff Weight distribution should be approximately 70% on the forward foot. ff “Reach” for the ball to hit a high soft bunker shot.

STROKE ff Keep weight on forward foot on takeaway. ff This shot is primarily an “arm swing” and should feel as if you are “picking the club up” with a lot of wrist hinge off the ball. ff Keep lower body very quiet throughout the swing. ff Move through the swing with a path is “in-to-out” and not left of your target. ff The heel of the club should be in the lead position, “leading” the toe of the club through

impact allowing the club to slide through the sand and not dig in to it.

TEMPO ff The rhythm of this swing should be long and lazy. ff Apply speed through the bottom of the arc.

DISTANCE CONTROL ff Distance control is accomplished with the proper follow through.

ff For shorter bunker shots, shorten the follow through, being very careful not to decelerate!

WINNING THE U.S. OPEN WITH SEVEN HICKORY SHAFT CLUBS LED TO 10,000 CADDY SCHOLARSHIPS Chick Evans was a golfer of note.

He was the first person to win the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open golf tournaments in the same year in 1916. Bobby Jones was the only other golfer to do it in 1930.

Evans accomplished his feat using only seven clubs, all of them hickory shafts. He won another U.S. Amateur in 1920.

Evans went on to win eight Western Amateur titles, the NorthSouth Amateur and the French Amateur, all while using these same seven hickory shaft clubs.

He also later played on the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour and was enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975.

But the mention of Chick Evans’ name centers around a most amazing achievement off the course and this is where The Olympic Club comes into the picture.

Taking all of his golf prize money and royalties, with the help of the Western Golf Association based in Chicago, he established the Evans Scholarship Foundation which thrives today. His theory was: the money he earned came from golf and thus should go back to golf.

Only 70 golfers are invited to play in The BMW each September.

The proceeds from the BMW Championship all go to the Evans Scholarship Foundation and so far, over $21 million has gone the cause.

900 former deserving and qualified junior caddies currently attend college on a four-year scholarship from the Chick Evans Scholarship Foundation. Since the inception of the Chick Evans program, 10,000 junior caddies have been awarded scholarships to college.

This year’s junior caddy program kicked off on May 24 with 15 junior caddies assigned to The Olympic Club and all of them attired in the “Augusta white” caddy coveralls. The first two weekends were very promising, with all 15 caddies having loops each day.

GM’S REPORT

Dear Olympians, Summer at the Club is in full swing! Many events took place in the months of May and June and more are planned for July and August. While summer may seem to be a quieter time, we still are busy with many events on and off both campuses.

This will be the 40th anniversary of the Trans Tahoe Relay, on July 16. Over 200 teams participate in this swim across Lake Tahoe.

Our athletic staff — including Aquatics Director Paul Carter, Aquatics Manager Laureen Welting and Athletic Director Gary Crook to name a few — will be on hand to make sure the event runs smoothly and safely.

Over Memorial Day weekend, our Tennis Section members competed in the annual Don Bering Cup at Pebble Beach. The Olympic Club was once again well represented and came home with a resounding win. At 53 years strong, the Don Bering Cup is the longest running competition in tennis between the two clubs and it is great to see so many of our members attend.

I have received several inquires asking what is taking place with the large number of trees being cut down at Lakeside and if there is a plan to replace those trees. Lakeside is mostly comprised of two species of trees, the Monterey Pine and the Monterey Cypress.

Many of these trees were planted during the 1920s, '30s and '40s. Monterey Pines mature at around 80 years of age and begin to die within a number of years. With most of the pines planted within a short period, they have been dying within a similarly short time frame over the last 10 years or so, leading to the many recent removals. In addition, during their later stages of life, most get infected with pitch canker which ultimately causes their demise. On the other hand, Monterey Cypress trees have a life span of around 150–200 years with some living as long as 250 years. With many of them planted at the same time as the pines, they still have quite a life left.

Late last year, the Green Committee started a study, having a horticulturalist survey all of the trees on the Lake Course. As part of the survey, GPS locations were identified for each tree, as well as the species and current health status. That data was then used by our golf course architect to create a plan that will be used in the planting of new trees from both architectural and a reforestation standpoints.

Things to consider in this plan are the location of new trees and the shade they cause near the putting greens. With bentgrass greens and the foggy weather, it is of the utmost importance to provide as much sunlight around the greens as possible.

While many trees have come down in the

last 15 years, the health of the turfgrass has increased in many areas due to more sunlight being available. The long-term plan created by our specialists and the Green Committee will provide a roadmap for planting new trees and the introduction of a few more species at Lakeside. Some of that planting will start this fall.

Later this summer at the City Clubhouse, work will begin on 2M to bring another facet of wellness to the Club. We are pleased to announce we will offer on-site preventative and rehabilitative services to the membership.

NEW SERVICE MEMBER INITIATIVE The Board of Directors is pleased to announce, effective July 1, 2016, The Olympic Club is offering to the first 25 applicants who are U.S. Military, honorably discharged members of the U.S. Military, or active sworn law enforcement officers or firefighters to join The Olympic Club as an Active member designated “Accelerated Active for Military/Law Enforcement/Fire.”

The new program accelerates the new applicant to the top of the wait list and allows the initiation fee to be paid over an extended payment schedule. Nonresident, Athletic, or Contributing members are not eligible for this program.
