A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, More is never enough. So says the hero of Martin Scorcese’s newest flick, The Wolf of Wall Street. And whether or not you’ve seen Hollywood’s latest examination of the sleazy road to riches, you might remember “Greed Is Good”, power ties, and the crash of ’87. Go back much further and think about the stories of Horatio Alger: all you need is luck, pluck, and a little virtue to find your fortune. How much have things changed since then? Could a smart, ambitious window-washer become chairman of the Board in 2014? Can anyone make their way to the ranks of the one percenters, or is there a limit to upward mobility? Climbing your way to the top is the Ur-Text of the American Dream: it’s the soundtrack to your daily commute, the premise of your favorite reality show, and the basis for countless novels and movies. Add a lot of humor, some song and dance, and the creativity of Abe Burrows and Frank Loesser, and it’s also the hit 1961 musical you’re about to see, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. The musical’s enduring popularity owes as much to its seminal subject matter as its hilarious and spot-on book and lyrics – which incidentally won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, one of only eight musicals in history to do so. Its genius is ably complemented at Olney by some genius talents: returning stars George Dvorsky and Sherri Edelen, amazing up-and-comers Sam Ludwig and Angela Miller, and an award-winning creative team that’s ready to deliver the goods. I’m so glad you’re here for How To Succeed…, the first show of our 76th season and my first full season as Artistic Director. I hope you’ll be back for more of it – and if you buy three tickets in advance during the year, you become a member of Olney Theatre Center, which entitles you to the least expensive tickets available as well as free events all year, from opportunities to meet playwrights to a Caribbean carnival for kids to lectures about great drama. We want Olney Theatre Center to unleash your creative spirit, so join us on the adventure! I’m delighted to have met many of you in person and via email and want to meet more of our amazing audience. Will you drop me a line at Jason@olneytheatre.org and let me know what you think? Onward!

I AND YOU

by Lauren Gunderson Directed by Eleanor Holdridge

Anthony turns up in Caroline’s bedroom one night bearing waffle fries, a beat-up book, and a homework assignment they’re supposed to do together: explore Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” Chronically sick, Caroline hasn’t been to school in a while… and can’t ever remember meeting some kid named Anthony, which dials up both her suspicions and her “snark-o-meter.” But as the two get to know each other through Whitman’s powerful verse, they finally learn of the deeper mystery which brought them together. I AND YOU is a valentine to youth, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness. Recommended for ages 14 and up.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES In 1936, a tenacious 22-year-old left his native St. Louis for the glamorous corporate world of New York City. He quickly found a position in the mailroom of an advertising agency—propitious starting ground for any aspiring young businessman—and after only a few short years of playing company politics, he landed himself in a four-windowed corner office. It was at this executive desk, as Vice President of Benton and Bowles advertising, that Shepherd Mead found the inspiration for his most enduring book: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying: A Dastard’s Guide to Fame and Fortune. Written in the guise of a rulebook, How to Succeed was a tongue-in-cheek cheat-sheet for dreamy-eyed youngsters looking to pull themselves up by their bootstraps without exerting too much effort. The guidebook overtly satirizes white-collar America, and its fictional hero, J. Pierrepont Finch, provides “useful” anecdotes rather than a storyline. Yet even its author could not deny how closely Finch’s upward scramble mirrored his own: “There will be few among you who won’t break into a sly smile of recognition as his career is unfolded… These illustrative bits were taken from life, indeed from the career of a man who was living monument to the precepts of this work.” Mead’s advice was silly, satirical, even bizarre, but many of his tips—from playing company politics (“stab the right backs”) to writing memos (“never come straight to the point”)—stem from his own history. His path to success, from mailroom to junior executive desk to corner office, was uncommon when the book was published in 1952. For Mead’s generation, it was not a college education that guaranteed achievement, but long hours, a bit of company politics, and a dash of luck. Finch’s quest translated beautifully onstage. The musical’s creators, Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows, had lived this ragsto-riches story themselves, and their corporate backgrounds infused the book with a tone that was both heartfelt and sardonic. Their audiences could relate as well; white-collar workers were in the majority for the first time in American history, and the population was still reeling over the success of World War II. This Horatio Alger philosophy—that success comes to those who most deserve it—was more of a reality in the 1950s and ’60s than any other period of American history. Today, luck and pluck are no longer enough. Economic and sociological studies continue to prove that upward mobility is still a possibility for most Americans, but on a much smaller scale. Aside from the occasional Steve Jobs, the 21st-century corporate world simply does not lend itself to Horatio Alger stories. As the 2012 PEW Economic Mobility Project stated, only 4 percent of those raised on the lowest rung of the economic ladder make their way to the top compared to the 1960s, when one third of the population was significantly better off than their parents, “confirming that
the ‘rags-to-riches’ story is more
often found in Hollywood than in
reality.” If the musical’s narrative is more fairytale than reality today, why do we still care about Finch’s rise to the top? Unlike audiences of 60 years ago, we have no reason to believe that our hero’s story is true, so why is it still so captivating? Perhaps it is the very improbability of this story that makes it endure. The American Dream is, after all, just that: a dream. The achievability of this ideal shifts with each generation, but it continues to populate our world, from TV shows and films to popular fascination with corporate prodigies like Mark Zuckerberg. How to Succeed embodies the dazzling, if unrealistic, peak of this rags-to-riches mythos; we know there is no formula for success, that window washers cannot suddenly become junior executives or fall in love with their secretaries consequence-free. We may not believe in these fantasies wholeheartedly anymore, but we certainly still want to. Finch reminds us that even in the midst of economic recessions and government shut-downs, the American Dream is still something we desperately want to believe in—perhaps it just takes a bit more “really trying” to get there. And a lot more luck. For more information on How to Succeed, please visit our dramaturgy blog at www.olneyhowtosucceed.wordpress.com. – Maegan Clearwood, Dramaturg 301.924.3400

Frank Loesser (Composer and Lyricist) One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Frank Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next eleven years working with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle”, and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.” The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition,” written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included the hit songs “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat To China,” and the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred Ray Bolger, was called Where’s Charley? and was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. This impressive score contains over 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-town try-outs. Jack Weinstock (Book Writer) Jack Weinstock, a native New Yorker who attended Columbia College and was a graduate of NYU’s Bellevue Medical College, was in private life a doctor. He did not start to write professionally until he met his collaborator Willie Gilbert, first as a patient and then as a friend. In addition to his successful writing career, “Dr. Jack” (as Weinstock’s friends called him) successfully lived two lives, one as author and one as doctor. He was medical director of a life insurance company, surgeon at two hospitals, and had a Fifth Avenue medical practice. Jack Weinstock died in 1969. Jason Loewith (Artistic Director/Director) directed the world premiere of Steven Dietz’s Rancho Mirage for Olney Theatre Center last season. Jason won Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, and Jeff Awards for Best New Musical for Adding Machine: A Musical, which he co-wrote with composer Joshua Schmidt (off-Broadway, 2008).
