On a Trail Close to You: Monday Hikes to Get Your Week Started

Day/Date: Mondays, February 17 - March 10 Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: Lake Wilson, Lake Lincoln, White Rock Mountain, Lake Alma Cost: $35.00 each with transportation, $25.00 commuter Min. - 10 Max. - 20 Activity Level: 2 - 4 Instructor: Mike Adelman, Facilitator Description: OLLI has offered hikes for years, often featuring dramatic vistas of places far afield. But there are many trails closer to home providing opportunities to clear the mind and refresh the spirit with winter and spring air. Join OLLI on early Spring Mondays to explore nearby scenic sites and their trails. All hikes are moderate in effort and require no special equipment, just a sturdy pair of walking shoes. We will visit: February 17: Lake Wilson: ~ 3 miles, moderate terrain, 150 feet of elevation gain. Once part of Fayetteville’s water supply, and now a City Park, although not within the city, Lake Wilson offers trails, streams, a lake, water fowl, perhaps some beavers, and low level bluffs just minutes from the campus. February 24: Lake Lincoln: ~ 5 miles, moderate terrain, 100 feet of elevation gain. A regional favorite among local rock climbers and mountain bikers, Lake Lincoln is also a haunt of migrating birds and is periodically visited by fishing eagles. Hikers will experience up close the bluffs used by the climbers and circle the lake through winter fields. March 3: White Rock Mountain ~ 3 miles, moderate terrain. OLLI’s fall effort to hike White Rock Mountain was preempted by the government’s shutdown. Our hike will use the Rim Trail so we will see every direction as spring starts greening the mountainside. For those willing, there will be a short optional add-on to drop below the bluffs into the forest; this portion will use a short but steep trail for about 25 yards. We will also observe several active logging operations to understand the role timber harvest plays in our National Forests.

March 10: Lake Alma: ~ 4 miles, moderate terrain, 200 feet of total gain. This is a new trail, so new many folks in Alma don’t know about it Built by Alma volunteers, it circles a lovely lake, and has a waterfall just off the trail. It is about this time that the first spring flowers appear, so let’s hope for some great photos. On the return trip, there will be a stopover at Artists Point to get a glimpse of the start of spring in the Ozarks. Participants will meet at Sam’s Club near the car wash at 8:30 a.m. each Monday morning. Bring brown bag lunch, water, bug spray, hat, and sun glasses. Cost of class includes transportation, and gas reimbursement.

The Wonderful World of Oz

Day/Date: Mondays, February 17 – March 17 Time: 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: GLBL - Fayetteville Cost: $41.00 Min. - 12 Max. - 30 Activity Level: N/A Instructor: Trevor Williamson, Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy/ Comparative Literature, UA Description: In 1900, L. Frank Baum published the first of a long series of children’s novels set in the fictional land of Oz. Since its initial appearance in children’s literature, the land of Oz has gone on to inspire numerous different iterations in a variety of mediums. As the classic 1939 film based on Baum’s original novel celebrates its 75th anniversary, it has become readily apparent that this land of fantasy is deeply embedded in the American consciousness and proves its longevity year after year. This course will discuss the ongoing relevancy of Baum’s work in popular culture, as it continues to be reinterpreted and reinvented for new audiences and generations. The history of the “OZ” franchise will be reviewed along with comparison of Baum’s original with its revisionist incarnation, Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. Both books are included in cost of class. This class is being held in conjunction with the WAC performance of the Wizard of Oz, April 1-6, 2014.
