STAND UP AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT BY KNOWING THE FACTS

WHERE DO WE STAND? The rate of rape and sexual assault was 1.2 times higher for nonstudents (7.6 per 1,000) than for students (6.1 per 1,000). For both college students and nonstudents, the victim knew the perpetrator in about 80% of rapes and sexual assaults. Most (51%) student rape and sexual assault occurred while the victim was out of their home, compared to nonstudents who usually at home (50%) when the victimization occurred. A weapon was present in about 1 in 10 rape and sexual assaults for both students and nonstudents. Rape and sexual assault victimizations of students (80%) were more likely than nonstudent victimizations (67%) to go unreported to police. Some of the student (26%) and nonstudent (23%) victims that chose not to report to police believed the episode was a personal matter, and 1 in 5 (20% each) expressed a fear of retribution. More student victims (12%) than nonstudent victims (5%) were more likely to express that the incident was not important enough to report. Fewer than 1 in 5 female student (16%) and nonstudent (18%) victims of rape and sexual assault received assistance from a victim services agency.

ON YOUR CAMPUS In higher educational institutions the amount of attempted or completed rape of women may be between 20% and 25% over the course of a college career. 9 in 10 women that were victims of rape or sexual assault knew who their offender was.

Almost 12.8% of completed rapes, 35% of attempted rapes, and 22.9% of threatened rapes happened while the victim is on a date. 2.8% experienced either a completed rape (1.7%) or an attempted rape (1.1%) during the sixmonth period in which the study was conducted. Of victims, 22.8% were victims of multiple rapes. If this data is calculated for a calendar year period, nearly 5% of college women are victimized during any given calendar year. It is estimated that for every 1,000 women attending a college or university, there are 35 incidents of rape each academic year. College women are much more likely to experience sexual assault or rape off campus rather than on campus. Of victims of completed rape 33.7% were victimized on campus and 66.3% off campus. Less than 5% of completed or attempted rapes against college women were reported to law enforcement. However, in 2/3rds of the occurrences the victim did tell someone; usually a friend. Taken From:
