A CARING, CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY: On each step of Brenda Brown’s life journey, God has provided for her in amazing ways. From her birthplace in Liberia to her childhood home in The Gambia to Georgia to Minnesota to Olivet Nazarene University, Brenda has experienced countless blessings.

“God delivered my family, physically unharmed, from the Liberian civil war in 1996,” she says. “We were alive, but we had to walk away from everything we owned.” Even when her family was living in The Gambia, a 90 percent Muslim country in Africa, they held worship services and Bible studies in their home. They also shared the gospel in nearby villages and towns — returning even after authorities had chased them away. Wanting to nurture the seeds of faith that her parents had planted in her life, Brenda was seeking higher education with a consistent, pervasive focus on Christ. That’s what she found the first time she visited Olivet. As a transfer student at Olivet, Brenda also found an outstanding nursing program with a Christian purpose. She is learning the importance of compassion in providing patient-

centered care for body, mind and soul. After losing her father to diabetes, she is even more convinced about the need for compassion in caregiving. “Olivet has taught me that nursing is about talking to a patient about God, holding a hand, saying a prayer,” she says. “Nursing is not about financial gain. It’s about the care and compassion that nurses share with our patients. Caring for my father during his illness and now volunteering at a home for the elderly have convinced me that I am called to be a nurse.”
During her time at Olivet, living away from her family has been a challenge. Nursing students and professors are there for her, supporting and
encouraging her every step of the way. She especially appreciates the strategies for success and dealing with stress that Professor Mary Nehls has shared with her. “There are a lot of ups and downs as a nursing student,” Brenda says. “Professor Nehls is always willing to sit and listen to me, and pray with me. At Olivet, I’m learning how to be part of a caring, Christian community.” One of Brenda’s ongoing challenges is financing her education. At times, she has wondered how her bills will get paid. But God’s faithfulness continues to see her through. “Receiving scholarships from Olivet has encouraged me in my education,” she says. “With the help of generous donors, I am able to focus more on my grades and less on financial issues.” Looking forward to her graduation from Olivet’s nursing program with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree in May 2018, Brenda says: “I know I’ll want to come back and visit this community. Olivet will always be a part of me, and I’ll always be a part of Olivet.”

GIVING TO THE FUTURE: ONE DONOR’S STORY Every facet of my academic, spiritual and social training at Olivet prepared me for success,” says Melissa (Johnston) Guerdan ’97. Now, Melissa and her husband, Chris, are finding more ways to help prepare Olivet Nazarene University students for making a difference in the world. 12
Olivet’s commitment to excellence in academics and music was what initially convinced Melissa to enroll as a piano performance major in 1992. Soon, she discovered the joy of biology and life sciences, and expanded her coursework to incorporate these fields of study. She still credits her music, psychology and biology professors for making a profound difference in her life and her career path. Dr. Ray Bower (Department of Behavioral Sciences) and his behavior modification laboratory. Dr. Harlow Hopkins (School of Music) and his musical creativity. Dr. Randy Johnson (Department of Biological Sciences) and his insistence on using scientific data appropriately. Completing an internship at CSL Behring (formerly Armour Pharmaceuticals) in

Kankakee, Illinois, during her senior year redirected and focused her career plans. She accepted a full-time position and was there for five years. From CSL Behring, Melissa worked in global management positions with some of the world’s top pharmaceutical and medical device companies: Pfizer, Baxter, Covidien, Alere. Her M.B.A. from DePaul University shifted her career from a technical focus to an executive leadership focus.
“I know from personal experience that the education and training students receive at Olivet is well-calibrated to the world’s most prestigious universities,” Melissa says. “In my career, I have
worked alongside professional colleagues who graduated from these universities.”
While at Covidien in St. Louis, Missouri, Melissa met and married Chris Guerdan. Through the years of their marriage, he has also become a strong supporter of Olivet and its mission. “Our first major investment at Olivet was actually Chris’s idea,” Melissa says. “With expert guidance from Olivet’s planned giving staff, we established an endowed scholarship for students in the School of Theology and Christian Ministry. My father was a second career and second generation Nazarene pastor. The scholarship is in honor of my mother and him.” As the Guerdans investigate more ways to invest in Olivet’s mission, they want to make sure the University has the funds to provide students and faculty with the tools they need to be maximally effective in classroom and laboratory settings. As Melissa says, “By investing in Olivet, we are investing in people who are going to make a difference in our world.” She adds: “Our purpose in this life is so much more than financial success or status. I’ve experienced that. Chris and I live our life in Christ. Our prayer and desire is that Olivet students and alumni excel in their chosen disciplines while remaining true to Christ and centered in Him.”
