-Site 1 has both good pedestrian and vehicular access. Connected to the Quays road via a large driveway shared with the adjacent water sports centre. The quays road is the main access road for the majority of the quays area and connects to the areas main trunk road (Trafford Road) 500m east as well as the M602. -Pedestrian access is provided by both plentiful pavements and the popular quayside footpath that runs to the south of the site. A public footpath runs between the site boundary and the quay to the south. -The Site has easy access to the nearby tram/train network via the nearby Salford Quays tram stop. -The area would see increased traffic during traditional rush hours as well as weekends and public holidays as it is close to both the Quayside Shopping centre and many residential developments.

Located next to the Helly Hansen water sports centre the site consists of a large grassy space surrounded by countless young native trees. To the south it looks over the quayside ans into Central Bay. To the north it looks to the street and the housing development beyond.
Existing vegetation -The site consists of a grassed over patch of land surrounded by ornamental box hedge and a mixture of British hardwood trees including some beech as well as some evergreen. -The trees form a screen 5 meteres tall around the whole site -The trees are around 15 years old and are well established. -None of the trees on the site or around are subject to tree protection orders (TPO’s) so they could be taken out if approved by planning.

Flood risk
The site is located in what the environment agency calls a medium risk area. This means that the area has a chance of river flooding each year between 1%and 3.3% based on computer modelling. A Flood survey would probably be required to build on the site Flood risk maps from the Environment Agency
Noise Pollution
Noise is an important consideration for a site as publicly exposed as this one. The site is located within 50m of the Salford quays shopping centre which is a popular tourist and leisure destination locally. Based on figures it is possible to calculate that on an average weekend 671 people drive to the quays each day. Although there are other routes into the quays one of the two main ones runs just past he site so this needs to be taken into consideration during the design process.
Air Pollution
Salford Quays is classed as moderate in the air quality index recorded as 18 micrograms per cubic meter
Boundary and footpaths
The site is bounded on three sides by mature trees with the other side being host to a small driveway which is shared with the nearby water sports centre. To the north runs a road and to the south a public footpath the traverses the quayside.

Lifestyle With only two people living there, the spaces do not need to be massive. Having the possibility for a sit down dinner for 6 would be advantageous. If a tower is proposed some kind of climbing facility on the outside as the client is a keen climber and all climbing walls are currently closed
Precedent Studies
Tower House, Portland, US Benjamin Waechter Architect
Consisting of four stories, each with one main room and accessed by a 25m long footbridge, the design was meticulously thought out to maximise the limited budget. A small footprint reduced the foundation costs and economical black steel cladding also reduced maintenance and ease of installation. Inside the house it draws inspiration from Portland’s timber industry with white oak fitted cabinets in each room.
Glen Lake Tower, Michigan, US Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects
Built in 2001 and located high on a hilltop above a lake in Michigan, the Glen Tower House is designed to create “a sustainable retreat that reflects the timeless beauty and simple comforts of the area,”. Two clad black metal walls support a three storey plywood box above the ground.

These concepts are my first brainstorming ideas about the layout of crating a tower house with workshop and covered space on the ground floor.
These models allowed me to make sense of the massing and scale of such a building when it was placed on the site

The balancing barn is a cantilevered structure located on the site of an old dairy and animal barn in Thortington, Suffolk. Designed by Mole architects with input from MVRDV for clients living architecture the barn is located on the edge of a natural amphitheatre in the ground meaning that 50% of the 34m long structure cantilevers out 5m above the meadow bellow. The barns architecture and structure is influenced by a desire to get closer to nature. The very essence of the barn is simple, using a shape and materials from the local building vernacular MVRDV have juxtaposed “the normal” to create something incredible.

The Barra House
Proof of Concept
Casa Barra is located in the central Chilean coast. The house consists of a rectangular floor plan facing north for the best sunlight and view of the valley. The space is divided into three spaces, with each end for resting and the centre of the house is a space for socialising that combines the living room, dining room, and kitchen.
In order to separate the home and professional lives my initial first thought was two distinctly separate volumes joined by come kind of link
My design process involved a lot of experimentation with different volumes and combinations of the two to come up with the best to carry forward
The structures were placed parallel to the quay to allow the kitchen to look out over both the quay and the garden

My house is to have a sedum roof to improve the look of the roof from the surrounding taller buildings. To accommodate this there are several layers necessary to support the plant life and prevent it from damaging the building structure; these are detailed above.
