A WORLD OF EXPERIENCES Olin Signature Program

Consider this: A good business school teaches management fundamentals and covers the functional areas of an organization. A great business school 足transforms the way you think, lead, and give back to the world community. What distinguishes Washington University in St. Louis? Ron Klein

Experience ... Standing Out. Talk to Washington University students and you hear the same comment repeatedly: “Students really do matter here.” The size of each BSBA cohort — about 160 students per entering class — allows professors to take an individualized approach to management education. Accessibility and responsiveness are Olin faculty trademarks. Professors know you by name and encourage you to take an active role in your learning.

Experience ... Flexible Curriculum. You develop an academic portfolio that meets your education and career objectives. Pursue a major or two from among Accounting, Economics & Strategy, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Health Care Management, International Business, Marketing, Operations & Supply Chain Management, and Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management. Leverage Washington University’s reputation for excellence — and increase your marketability by earning your business degree in combination with a major or minor from the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering & Applied Science, or the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. Or combine your BSBA with a Master of Accounting (MACC), a Master of Science in Finance (MSF), or a Master of Science in Supply Chain Management (MS/SCM). Or check out Olin’s highly selective 3+2 MBA Program, which allows you to earn a BSBA and MBA in five years instead of the typical six. Health Care Management The centerpiece of Olin’s major and minor in Heath Olin Signature Program

Care Management is “Olin Grand Rounds: The Business and Practice of Medicine.” A team-taught faculty collaboration between Olin Business School and Washington University’s School of Medicine, “Olin Grand Rounds” engages you to better understand health care organizations.

The Freshman Experience Ultimately, what brought me to Washington University was a combination of the types of people I met and the university’s willingness to support students. When I traveled to campus for Spotlight, Olin’s admitted students’ event, it became clear to me that the atmosphere here was different from those at most other top-tier universities. Everyone was so friendly, and it seemed like students were more than willing to help one another with academics. I also liked that, as a student at Olin, not only would I be able to take courses outside the business school, but I would actually be encouraged to do so. This was important to me, because I knew that I wanted to study another subject along with business.

My first semester at Wash U was a blast. I enjoyed the experience of meeting new people and making friends. I found my introductory business courses engaging and pertinent to business in the real world. My classes were c hallenging, but manageable.

L

earning to take initiative and to think differently — that’s the strength of Olin. Bottom line: Olin creates leaders, not just doers.

You need to be able to take what you learn to the street. Washington University provides a wide range of courses, competitions, and projects that give you on-the-job experience.

CENTER FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Karen Elshout

We are one of the first business schools in the nation to establish a formal center for applied learning. The Center for Experiential Learning (CEL) programs reinforce the business curricula and other school initiatives, as they have for almost 20 years. Equally important, the programs provide cost-effective or pro bono management expertise to St. Louis-area businesses and nonprofit agencies. In short, CEL offers a wide range of opportunities for Olin students, enabling them to apply their business skills: grow endowment or investment funds, research products and services, analyze marketing strategies, evaluate lean manufacturing processes, and earn academic credit for these experiences.

Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies A catalyst connecting Washington University Signature Program

Washington University’s seven schools to one another and to the stakeholders in our community, the Skandalaris Center supports entrepreneurship and inno vation. Accelerating innovation is critical to Washington University’s role as a leading academic institution and a key pillar of a world-class university that invites our faculty, students, and the surrounding community to be leaders in a fastchanging global world.

Washington University has definitely exceeded my expectations. I have enjoyed my classes, my classmates, my professors, and my extracurricular activities more than I thought I would when first accepting admission. The biggest surprise has been how easy it is to get involved in the university. With over 300 student groups, there really is something for everyone. I am involved with NETimpact, the Olin Sustainability Case Competition Committee, and DOT — Do One Thing — campaign. NETimpact is a sustainably focused business group that has two goals: 1) to help each member find a job that helps them do well for themselves while doing good for the world, and 2) to create changes around the Wash U campus that make a positive impact.

I am planning to become a doctor. Physicians work in dynamic, complex environments. I chose to complement my pre-med studies with organizational behavior to learn techniques to create a positive and productive workplace that will benefit my patients.

Peter Cleary

The Junior Experience I always wanted the opportunity to travel abroad, and Olin’s program seemed like an ideal way to grow — professionally and personally. I was eager for the opportunity for an additional internship, and was especially fortunate to have an internship at the Westpac Foundation, which is exceeding my expectations. I believe studying abroad will differentiate me in future application processes. Studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, was the ideal choice for me. I am extremely fond of the combination of business, arts, and nature that permeates the culture in Sydney. I am gaining corporate experience, but also being exposed to new cultures. I am sure to have a more mature perspective and greater a ppreciation of both cultures when I return to the United States.

Peter Cleary

I was particularly interested in social entrepreneurship and how innovation can revolutionize the nonprofit sector. I had a great summer internship at Connections to Success, a local nonprofit that allowed me to see the process of creating sustainable programming.

Building Your Career Foundation

So how does Washington University give you a more competitive advantage in the marketplace? Olin’s Weston Career Center team gets you ready for business, providing expertise, counsel, and resources to lay the foundation for your lifelong professional development. Your partnership with the career center begins your first semester, continues into “Building Your Career Foundation — Strategies and Techniques,” a fall-term course taken your sophomore year, and progresses as you make decisions about internships and employment. You discuss your interests and goals with an advisor, and develop a targeted strategy to meet those objectives. You also complete self-assessments … research industries and companies … refine your résumé and cover letter … create a marketing plan that promotes your brand and outlines your value proposition to potential intern providers and employers … and perfect an “elevator pitch” that summarizes your strengths and prepares you for networking events.

I think one of the best things that Wash U taught me was to go into everything with an open mind and know that I have the skillset to be successful. This mantra applied to nearly everything: my internship – I went in wanting to learn everything, but knowing what I could offer to my employer; traveling – I can drop myself in any foreign country and find the resources to get around and have fun. I have always been interested in how companies work and what makes them successful. I love that case competitions let me apply the things that we learn in class to real-world companies with real problems. It really proves that what we learn in the classroom is applicable and useful, and reminds me why we learn all the things that we do in Olin.

I most look forward to staying in touch with my friends who are going all over the world doing amazing things. I’ll know lawyers and doctors, people starting tech companies and working at investment banks in China. Wash U is small enough that we want to help Jock Fistick

other alumni, and the atmosphere that we have here carries over to the professional world.

dreams lead you, we stay connected with you for a lifetime. jason’s Recipe for Success: a dream come true With rave reviews from celebrity chefs and flattering coverage in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, Xi’an Famous Foods is on the lips of every New York foodie.

The 23-year-old entrepreneur thought he’d follow a corporate career path after graduating from Olin Business School, but saw the potential in his father’s tiny storefront noodle shop in Queens, which had grown in popularity while he was away at college.

Jason Wang, BSBA ’09, is seducing customers with hand-pulled n oodles, stewed pork burgers, and spicy lamb infused with cumin — all specialties from his father’s native city, Xi’an, in China.

In less than two years, Wang has opened three new locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. Plans are in the works for two more restaurants and a warehouse-sized kitchen facility to prep food and produce a line of frozen products for retail sales. Wang says he’s applying what he learned about marketing and management at Olin on a daily basis to his burgeoning restaurant empire. His Hatchery class taught him a lot about planning a startup even though his project for a dorm room cleaning service didn’t pan out.

Jennifer Weisbord

During an interview at his East Village location on St. Mark’s Place, Wang hauls a huge black garbage bag from the front door of the restaurant out to the curb. He smiles and says: “Being a manager in this business means you do everything. It’s a lot of work. It’s not glamorous, but it is rewarding.” Watch videos of Jason Wang with famous chefs at xianfoods.com/
