1.0 About CIEL With 36 mio. in seed funding (2011-2013) The Copenhagen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab (CIEL) was launched to create a substantial economic impact through comprehensive support of entrepreneurial activities at the University of Copenhagen (KU), the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Copenhagen Business School (CBS). At CIEL we help coordinate the work of different incubators (CSElab, Katalyst, Katapult and DTU institute facilities) in order to improve a network of incubators matching entrepreneurial needs. Furthermore this work will extend to form cross-organizational student groups seeking incubator support. The alliance focuses on making entrepreneurship a natural part of the universities' work by initiating research, education and student activities to promote the students' abilities and wishes to transfer their academic skills into social value. This must take place through an increased professional collaboration that prepares the ground for new business-oriented and innovative programmes and research results, and in close cooperation with the business community. Providing a model for cooperation between researchers, students, institutions, disciplines and industries, we leverage the strength of 50,000 students, 10,000 researchers and more than 800 university and industry partners. The vision is to create a high reaching landmark that provides not only the Danish, but also the international community with an example of best practice in knowledge-based innovation and entrepreneurship.

2.0 Vision Our vision is to create a landmark for excellence in knowledge-based entrepreneurship, elevating the Copenhagen Region to become a powerful growth engine with significant regional, national, and international impact fostering a dynamic entrepreneurship eco-system, which pools private, public and international partners with our three universities.

3.0 Mission We work with a mission to develop a collaborative university alliance, where students and staff across academic disciplines are passionate and engaged in knowledge-based value creation. We build on high academic excellence present at our universities, and we are working to strengthen the entrepreneurial knowledge, mind and skillset, among students and staff, in order to become a powerhouse of knowledgebased innovation and entrepreneurship.

4.0 Principles for collaboration As a collaborative alliance between University of Copenhagen (KU), the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Copenhagen Business School (CBS) CIEL pools the joint resources of more than 50.000 students and 10.000 researchers, representing a vast number of academic disciplines from humanities, social sciences, health- and natural science, the technical sciences and business. As a strong collaborative platform across faculties and with a large number of private, public and international partners, CIEL´s work is based on the following principles for collaboration: •

Equal partnership

5.0 Flagship Projects Collectively, the three partner universities (DTU, KU and CBS) provide a rich infrastructure of support for entrepreneurial students, faculty, and start-up projects. CIEL will build on this entrepreneurship system, leverage it across all partners, and develop it towards a comprehensive and integrated entrepreneurship support system in order to become an international bench-mark case.

5.1 Research CIEL aims at becoming a resource base for entrepreneurship and innovation, which significantly enhances our understanding of the start-up and innovation phenomena. To this end, CIEL will •

Support and leverage existing research efforts at the three institutions.

Create a platform for trans-disciplinary cooperation among entrepreneurship re- searchers at the three partner universities and including our international partner in- stitutions.

Build and sustain an internationally unique database by tracking all new entrepreneu- rial initiatives and entrepreneurs over a multi-year time line.

Stimulate innovative research projects in the entrepreneurship domain.

5.2 Education The Entrepreneurial Excellence Programs (EEP) help promote collaboration and provide the case-teaching materials and resources necessary for developing an integrated entrepreneurial teaching approach to a scientific area of expertise. Building on the model used by the BioBusiness and Innovation Program, a succesful collaboration between KU, DTU and CBS, which has been running for the past two years, the Entrepreneurship Excellence Programs are set to become one of CIEL’s flagship projects and a significant driver towards meeting CIEL’s overall vision. The aim is to develop five new programs of excellence in areas such as medico technology, welfare, green energy, digital services, food and health, which will function as thematic platforms for university-industry collaboration creating cross-institutional synergy and unfolding the full entrepreneurial potential of the capital region.

5.3 Extracurricular Activities Collectively, the three partner universities (DTU, KU and CBS) provide a rich infrastructure of support for entrepreneurial students, faculty, and start-up projects. CIEL will build on this entrepreneurship system, leverage it across all partners, and develop it towards a comprehensive and integrated entrepreneurship support system in order to become an international bench-mark case. The CIEL entrepreneurship support system applies a comprehensive approach and addresses entrepreneurial challenges at all stages of development. Thus, the system covers a range of activities from creating early awareness for entrepreneurship as a career opportunity, to triggering initiatives for new ventures, supporting early start-up creation, and promoting later stage growth and development.
