STARTING FIVE

1

Ole Miss dropped its first game of the season on Sunday falling to MTSU, 71-65. The loss moved Ole Miss to 3-1 and was the Rebels first home loss in its last five home games. Additionally, it gave MTSU head coach Rick Insell, father of Ole Miss head coach Matt Insell, his first win over his son as a head coach.

2

Erika Sisk posted her first 20-point game of the season with 20 points against MTSU. With Sisk’s 20 points, the Rebels have had a 20-point scorer in each game this season. Tia Faleru has scored 20+ twice this season, while Shandricka Sessom and Sisk have each reached the milestone once.

3

The Rebels will close out a season-opening five game homestand in Tuesday’s contest with Southeast Missouri. Ole Miss last opened a season with five straight home games in 2012-13 going, 5-0 before dropping its first contest. This is the longest season-opening homestand in the Insell era.

4

For the second time this season, Ole Miss was without a double-figure rebounder against MTSU. Tia Faleru was held to just nine rebounds, one shy of her third double-digit rebounding game of the season. Faleru leads the SEC in rebounding with 13.3 rebounds per game, ahead of Tennessee’s Bashaara Graves.

5

The freshmen are growing each day. Toree Thompson and Shandricka Sessom have started each game and are leading the way. Thompson is the third leading scorer with 8.3 points per game and Sessom is averaging 6.3 points per game. A’Queen Hayes, is leading the squad in assists with 3.0 per game.

OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT INSELL

I

n his first season as head coach at Ole Miss, Matt Insell laid the foundation for a promising future. Beginning his career with the Rebels, Insell led Ole Miss to a 10-6 non-conference record, including a seven-game win streak - the longest win streak for the Rebels since the 2007-08 season. Ole Miss’ non-conference schedule was highlighted by a matchup in Waco, Texas, where the Rebels took on the Baylor Bears, who had reached the Sweet Sixteen a year before. With Ole Miss leading in the final minutes, Baylor battled back to spoil the upset, giving fans a glimpse of the success to come under the vision of Insell.

What They Are Saying About Matt Insell: “We are thrilled to welcome Matt Insell to the University of Mississippi and the Ole Miss family as our new women’s basketball coach,” Bjork said. “Our search to find the right head coach took us to all corners of the country as we attracted top coaches from the basketball community. Coach Insell has coaching in his veins and was destined to be a head coach from day one. Coach Insell is viewed by many in college athletics as the top assistant coach in the country and his expertise in game planning, strategy, recruiting, and the student-athlete experience has been well chronicled.” Being part of a re-building job at the University of Kentucky has enabled Coach Insell to gain the necessary requirements needed of our new staff as we re-capture the legacy that is Lady Rebel Basketball. He is the perfect fit to make this happen and we are excited he is joining our team. Ross Bjork , Ole Miss Athletics Director “I am elated for Matt. He made the decision when he graduated high school to forgo playing collegiate basketball and concentrate on becoming a Division I head coach. I am very excited about the journey he has made. I don’t know of a better place to build his legacy than the University of Mississippi. Matt is a fantastic fit for the program. Deb and I, along with our entire family, are very proud of him.” Rick Insell, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Middle Tennessee State

After battling through the always challenging SEC schedule, the Rebels entered the SEC Tournament at the No. 14 seed, determined to take the momentum from a regular season finale victory over Auburn into the postseason tournament. Drawing the No. 11 seed Arkansas, the Rebels took care of business with a 63-62 victory, giving Ole Miss a statement win for Insell’s process. “I didn’t look at it as rebuilding, I looked at it as a process of getting us back to the top,” said Insell after the SEC Tournament win. “A win like this helps you get there.” Insell also led the Rebels to wins over instate rival, Mississippi State to give the first-year head coach his first SEC victory. In addition to the Rebel’s battle with 2014 Elite Eight participant, Baylor, Ole Miss posted victories against women’s basketball powerhouse, Louisiana Tech and sent the Ole Miss senior class out in style with a Senior Day overtime win over Auburn at Tad Smith Coliseum. Insell, who was responsible for the guards while also having recruiting and player development duties, served as the top assistant coach and helped UK ink three top-10 recruiting classes and seven McDonald’s All-Americans. During his time at Kentucky, Insell helped develop guard A’dia Mathies, a two-time SEC Player of the Year and All-America candidate, and Bria Goss who was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Prior to Kentucky, Insell was the Director of Basketball Operations at Louisiana Tech under Coach Chris Long. Before that, he was considered one of the top AAU coaches in the country, coaching the Tennessee Flight, a Nike Elite Travel Program, for three years. Insell earned valuable basketball experience while attending the University of Tennessee from 2001-2005. He worked closely with both the men and women’s basketball programs, serving as a student assistant/video coordinator under former men’s head coach Buzz Peterson and as an instructor at Pat Summitt’s summer basketball camps. The Shelbyville, Tenn., native transferred to Middle Tennessee State during the 2005-06 season where his father, Rick Insell, is the head women’s basketball coach. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in political science from MTSU in 2007. THE INSELL FILE Full Name: Matthew Ollen Insell Birthday: September 22, 1982 Hometown: Shelbyville, Tenn. High School: Shelbyville Central HS College: Middle Tennessee, `07 Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Political Science

“Ole Miss made a great decision when they hired Matt Insell. Matt is an excellent college basketball coach. I believe you have to be strong in many areas to be a quality college basketball coach. You can’t be one dimensional. Matt is an outstanding recruiter, a tireless worker in the area of player development and very knowledgeable from an X and O standpoint. He always had a great feel regarding in-game adjustments that will prove valuable to him as a head coach. More important than any of that to me was his friendship to our family. He is like a member of our family. He was incredibly loyal to the Kentucky program,

and we benefitted greatly from his contributions over the past five years.” Matthew Mitchell, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Kentucky

Faleru in Double Digits … Again Tia Faleru picked up her fourth game of double figures against Middle Tennessee with 19 points. Faleru has been in double figures in nine of her last 10 games dating back to last season. The last time Faleru wasn’t in double figures was against Auburn in the SEC Tournament when she posted just six points. Turnover Woes Ole Miss has struggled in the turnover department in the last several games. Entering the Southern game Ole Miss was averaging 14 turnovers per game but against Southern, they had 22 turnovers and in the Middle game had 24 miscues, averaging 23 turnovers in the last two games. The Blue Raiders were able to score 27 points of Rebel miscues, which proved to be one of the differences in the game. Loggin’ Minutes Tia Faleru is averaging 31.8 minutes per game this season and in the last two games averaged 36.5 minutes. Erika Sisk also saw plenty of time vs. Middle Tennessee as she joined Faleru on the court for 37 minutes. In fact, against Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss had three players see 30+ minutes in Faleru, Sisk and Gracie Frizzell, marking the first time all season Ole Miss has had more than one player log 30+ minutes. Rebel Rookies Getting in Groove Ole Miss’ freshman class is getting a baptism by fire this season. Toree Thompson and Shandricka Sessom have each started the first four games of their collegiate careers and Thompson is Ole Miss’ third leading scorer with 8.3 points per game. Kelsey Briggs and A’Queen Hayes are getting things done on the defensive side of the ball nabbing 4.3 rebounds per game -- which is tied for third best on the squad. Hayes and Thompson are holding down the point guard spot with Hayes leading the team with 3.0 assists per game with Thompson just behind her at 2.75 assists per game. #History The Ole Miss vs. Middle Tennessee game went down as one for the NCAA history books as it was the first time in NCAA Division I women’s basketball that a father and son squared off as head coaches. Ironically, it happened on the men’s side last season as well when Rick Pitino faced his son Richard. In both instances the fathers prevailed. #FatherKnowsBest

Struggling from the Charity Stripe The Rebels certainly don’t have trouble scoring as they are averaging 84.8 points per game, but thy are struggling from the line a little bit this season. Currently the Rebels are shooting 65.2 percent from the charity stripe (73-of-112) and have only shot better than 70 percent in one contest this season. On the season, Ole Miss has left 39 points at the charity stripe including seven points in their six-point loss to Middle Tennessee. Rebels Go For 20 This seem to bode well for the Rebels when they get to 20 points. In each of the Rebels four games this season, Ole Miss has had a 20-point scorer. For two games it’s been Tia Faleru with the 21 points vs. Grambling and 29 points vs. Southern. Rookie Shandricka Sessom tallied 21 points in the win over Mississippi Valley while Erika Sisk got in the action with 20 vs. Middle Tennessee. Last season, Faleru had 10 games of 20 or more points and leads all active players with 13 career games of 20 or more points. Ole Miss has had nine players reach double figures highlighted by 20-point outings by Tia Faleru, Shandricka Sessom and Erika Sisk. Tia Faleru Joins 1,000-Point Club Tia Faleru became the 26th member of Ole Miss’ 1000-point club with a pair for free throws midway through the second half of the Mississippi Valley State game. Faleru entered the 2014-15 season needing just 41 points to eclipse 1,000 points. She now sets her sights on 1500 career points and just needs 451 to become one of six players in program history to reach that mark. Talkin’ Bout Defense Coach Insell has preached to the Rebels defense all off season and its looked like it all came together against Mississippi Valley as the Rebels forced 46 turnovers and scored 51 points off of those miscues. Welcome Home, Erika One of the new faces to the Ole Miss squad this season, isn’t a new face to the Oxford community. Sophomore Erika Sisk is an Oxford native and led Oxford high school to an undefeated season and a state title in 2012. She started her collegiate career at Murray State where she was named Ohio Valley Freshman of the Year

Last Season at the Tad Pad The 2014-15 season will make the end of an era as it will be the last full season for the Ole Miss basketball teams in the Tad Smith Coliseum. Ole Miss will open a new basketball arena, The Pavilion at Ole Miss, for the start of the 2015-16 conference slate. Ole Miss is 12 wins away from its 400th win at the Tad Pad and boasts a nearly 80 percent winning percentage on its current home court.

Sisk … Basketball AND Track Star While Sisk was away from the basketball court for a year she wasn’t exactly sitting around. Sisk was member of the Ole Miss track team during the 2013-14 season and jumped for the Rebels. Sisk was the 2012 Gatorade Girls Track and Field athlete for Mississippi and led Oxford to three state titles. Sisk will join the Ole Miss track team at the conclusion of the basketball season. In other words, Sisk is FAST! Youth Movement There is a youth movement in Oxford this season. The Rebels welcomed six freshmen to the squad this season, the largest freshman class since the 2010-11 season when Ole Miss had eight freshman and 10 new faces. Of the 14 players on the Ole Miss roster, only five have played more than one year of collegiate basketball. #YouthMovement Rebels on the Airwaves Ole Miss’ regular-season games can be heard on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi (105.5 FM) or Q93.7 FM with the pregame show starting 15 minutes before tipoff. Graham Doty, in his fourth season, will be on the call along with former Ole Miss great, Armintie Herrington who will do color for road contests and will serve as a color analyst for Ole Miss’ home SECN+ contests. Game updates via Twitter will be available all season at @OleMissWBB. All home games that are not on TV will be streamed online on SECN+, which will be available on the WatchESPN app. SEC Network Changes the Game This summer the SEC launched the SEC Network, an entire network devoted to the SEC. The first women’s basketball game will air on the Network on Nov. 16 when Alabama hosts Duke. The game will be the first of the 96 women’s basketball games scheduled to air. The Network’s weekly game coverage will include a doubleheader every Thursday and a Women’s Game of the Week on Monday. The SEC will televise 188 total games between men’s and women’s basketball
