The Rebels open the 41st season of women’s basketball against Grambling State on Friday (Nov. 14). Friday’s game will be the 1,227th game since the first varsity season during the 1974-75 season. Ole Miss has an all-time record of 766-459.

Ole Miss is seeking its seventh consecutive season-opening victory and its second under the direction of head coach Matt Insell. The last time the Rebels dropped an opener was during the 2007-08 season at Nebraska. The last time Ole Miss dropped a home opener was during the 1998-99 season to Clemson.

Ole Miss opens the 2014-15 season at home for the sixth consecutive season and boasts a 37-3 record in home openers. This will be the first time since the 2011-12 season Ole Miss has opened with the school day game.

This will be the collegiate debut for Ole Miss’ six freshmen. Mississippi natives Kiara Golden (Olive Branch), A’Queen Hayes (Horn Lake) and Shandricka Sessom (Byhalia) join Toree Thompson (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Sarah Porter (San Diego, Calif.) and Kelsey Briggs (Memphis, Tenn.) as first year players fo the Rebels.

Senior forward Tia Faleru is approaching the 1,000-point milestone and enters the season-opener vs. Grambling needing just 41 points to top 1,000. She will become the 26th player in program history to hit the milestone. She needs to average 20.5 points per game to hit the milestone during opening weekend.

n his first season as head coach at Ole Miss, Matt Insell laid the foundation for a promising future. Beginning his career with the Rebels, Insell led Ole Miss to a 10-6 non-conference record, including a seven-game win streak - the longest win streak for the Rebels since the 2007-08 season. Ole Miss’ non-conference schedule was highlighted by a matchup in Waco, Texas, where the Rebels took on the Baylor Bears, who had reached the Sweet Sixteen a year before. With Ole Miss leading in the final minutes, Baylor battled back to spoil the upset, giving fans a glimpse of the success to come under the vision of Insell.

After battling through the always challenging SEC schedule, the Rebels entered the SEC Tournament at the No. 14 seed, determined to take the momentum from a regular season finale victory over Auburn into the postseason tournament. Drawing the No. 11 seed Arkansas, the Rebels took care of business with a 63-62 victory, giving Ole Miss a statement win for Insell’s process. “I didn’t look at it as rebuilding, I looked at it as a process of getting us back to the top,” said Insell after the SEC Tournament win. “A win like this helps you get there.” Insell also led the Rebels to wins over instate rival, Mississippi State to give the first-year head coach his first SEC victory. In addition to the Rebel’s battle with 2014 Elite Eight participant, Baylor, Ole Miss posted victories against women’s basketball powerhouse, Louisiana Tech and sent the Ole Miss senior class out in style with a Senior Day overtime win over Auburn at Tad Smith Coliseum. Insell, who was responsible for the guards while also having recruiting and player development duties, served as the top assistant coach and helped UK ink three top-10 recruiting classes and seven McDonald’s All-Americans. During his time at Kentucky, Insell helped develop guard A’dia Mathies, a two-time SEC Player of the Year and All-America candidate, and Bria Goss who was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Prior to Kentucky, Insell was the Director of Basketball Operations at Louisiana Tech under Coach Chris Long. Before that, he was considered one of the top AAU coaches in the country, coaching the Tennessee Flight, a Nike Elite Travel Program, for three years. Insell earned valuable basketball experience while attending the University of Tennessee from 2001-2005. He worked closely with both the men and women’s basketball programs, serving as a student assistant/video coordinator under former men’s head coach Buzz Peterson and as an instructor at Pat Summitt’s summer basketball camps. The Shelbyville, Tenn., native transferred to Middle Tennessee State during the 2005-06 season where his father, Rick Insell, is the head women’s basketball coach. OLE MISS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2014-15 Ole Miss vs. Grambling Notables -This is the sixth meeting between the Rebels and Grambling Tigers. The last meeting came during the 2011-12 season The Rebels won that meeting, 73-56 in Oxford.

Scouting Grambling Grambling opens its 2014-15 season under the direction of first-year head coach Nadine Domond. The Tigers posted an 11-20 record in 2013-14 and finished seventh in the SWAC with a record of 7-11. Grambling has lots of new faces with seven freshmen joining the program. The lone returning player from the 2013-14 roster is Jaylan Bodiford who saw action in 28 games with two starts averaging 2.4 points. Last season, the Tigers averaged 69.5 points and 42.5 rebounds.

- Grambling has one player from Mississippi in Kiana Jones who’s from Natchez. The Rebels don’t have any players from Louisiana. -Grambling is the first of four teams from the SWC the Rebels will face this season. Ole Miss will also face Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 16), Southern (Nov. 20) and Alabama A&M (Dec. 20). Ole Miss is 68-6 against teams from the SWAC. A Win Would… -Give Ole Miss its seventh consecutive season-opening victory and it’s ninth consecutive home-opening victory. The win would also move the Rebels to 38-3 in home openers all time. Rebels By The Numbers 2- The Rebels enter their second season under head coach Matt Insell. Insell, who is the youngest coach in the SEC at 32 years old, led Ole Miss to a 12-20 record in this first year at the helm. 8-Number of new faces on the Ole Miss basketball team in 2014-15. That number includes six freshmen and two transfers in Oxford native Erika Sisk who returns home after playing her freshman year at Murray State and Precious Person who spent two years at Rutgers. 25-Number of points freshman Toree Thompson scored in Ole Miss’ exhibition game vs. Christian Brothers. She led all-scorers and added nine assists, just one shy of a double-double. 41-Number of points Tia Faleru needs to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She will become the 26th 1000-point scorer in program history. 388-Number of wins Ole Miss has at the Tad Pad entering the 2014-15 season. Ole Miss needs just 12 home wins to reach 400 home wins in its 41-year history at the Tad Smith Coliseum.

About Ole Miss Ole Miss opens year two of the Matt Insell era on Friday morning. The Rebels return six players from last years squad that went 12-20 with SEC wins over Mississippi State and Auburn. Ole Miss also recorded an SEC tournament victory with a 63-62 win over Arkansas -- the first SEC tournament win since 2010. Ole Miss will have eight new faces on the roster this season, including six freshmen. The Rebels also return the SEC’s top scorer and rebounder in Tia Faleru who averaged 16.4 points per game and 9.4 rebounds during her junior season. Ole Miss will also have the services of Shequila Joseph, who started all 32 games as a freshman. Recapping the Christian Brothers Exhibition The Ole Miss women’s basketball team used 25 points from freshman Toree Thompson (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and eight rebounds from Kelsey Briggs (Memphis, Tenn.) to cruise to a 111-43 win over Christian Brothers in exhibition action on Nov. 7Thompson started her collegiate career with a bang, scoring a game-high 25 points to go along with nine assists, just one shy of her first collegiate double-double. Thompson led four Rebels in double figures and was joined by Tia Faleru (Ozark, Ala.) with 14 points, Erika Sisk (Oxford, Miss.) with 13 points and Briggs with 12 points off the bench. Ole Miss’ new look backcourt of Thompson and Sisk certainly didn’t disappoint in their first outing, combining for 28 of Ole Miss’ 51 first half points. Thompson led the way with a game-high 18 points in the first half en route to a 25-point night. On the rebounding front, Faleru and Briggs teamed with Bretta Hart (Poplarville, Miss.) for 22 of the Rebels 53 rebounds. Ole Miss was impressive on the offensive glass in the contest with 18 offensive boards.

Let’s Get It Started The Rebels will tip off the 41st season of women’s basketball on Friday Overall, Ole Miss is 34-6 in seasonopeners and have won their last 11 season openers dating back to the 2002-03 season. Faleru Earns Spot on All-SEC Second Team Senior forward Tia Faleru earned a spot on the preseason All-SEC second team. It was the second preseason accolade for the Alabama native who also was a College Sports Madness preseason All-SEC second team selection. Faleru, who was a C Spire Gillom Trophy finalist last year and a second team All-SEC selection last year, is the league’s top returning scorer and rebounder with 16.4 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game. Frizzell also saw action in each of Ole Miss’ 32 games. You Can’t Replace V ... Ole Miss will be charged with replacing four-year starter Valencia McFarland. Sisk … Basketball AND Track Star While Sisk was away from the basketball court for a year she wasn’t exactly sitting around. Sisk was member of the Ole Miss track team during the 2013-14 season and jumped for the Rebels. Sisk was the 2012 Gatorade Girls Track and Field athlete for Mississippi and led Oxford to three state titles. Sisk will join the Ole Miss track team at the conclusion of the basketball season. In other words, Sisk is FAST! Youth Movement There is a youth movement in Oxford this season. The Rebels welcomed six freshmen to the squad this season, the largest freshman class since the 2010-11 season when Ole Miss had eight freshman and 10 new faces. The Rebels won two of their last three games, including an SEC Tournament victory over Arkansas. Additionally, two of their last three losses were by a combined five points, both coming on the road. Rebels on the Airwaves Ole Miss’ regular-season games can be heard on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi (105.5 FM) or Q93.7 FM with the pregame show starting 15 minutes before tipoff. Graham Doty, in his fourth season, will be on the call along with former Ole Miss great, Armintie Price-Herrington who will do color for road contests and will serve as a color analyst for Ole Miss’ home SECN+ contests. Game updates via Twitter will be available all season at @ OleMissWBB. All home games that are not on TV will be streamed online on SECN+, which will be available on the WatchESPN app. SEC Network Changes the Game This summer the SEC launched the SEC Network, an entire network devoted to the SEC. The first women’s basketball game will air on the Network on Nov. 16 when Alabama hosts Duke. The game will be the first of the 96 women’s basketball games scheduled to air. The Network’s weekly game coverage will include a doubleheader every Thursday and a Women’s Game of the Week on Monday. The SEC will televise 188 total games between men’s and women’s basketball in addition to carrying more than 100 games as digitally exclusive SEC Network events available on WatchESPN and SECNetwork.com

Last Season at the Tad Pad The 2014-15 season will make the end of an era as it will be the last full season for the Ole Miss basketball teams in the Tad Smith Coliseum. Ole Miss will open a new basketball arena, The Pavilion at Ole Miss, for the start of the 2015-16 conference slate. Ole Miss is 12 wins away from its 400th win at the Tad Pad and boasts a nearly 80 percent winning percentage on its current home court. Loaded Schedule The Ole Miss squad will take on some quality completion in the non-conference before jumping into the alwayschallenging SEC slate. Ole Miss takes on C-USA powerhouse, Middle Tennessee, Utah from the Pac-12 as well as Western Kentucky and a rematch of last year’s thriller with Baylor in the non-conference slate. The Rebels will also renew its in-state rivalry with Southern Miss in 2014-15. Captain, My Captain The Rebels will be captained by senior Danielle McCray (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior Gracie Frizzell (Little Rock, Ark.). Both players are serving as captains for the first time in their careers. From All Over The Land Ole Miss’ roster is comprised of players from eight different states. The Rebels hail from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, California and Maryland. Sophomore Shequila Joseph holds down the international contingent hailing from London, England. The Magnolia state is the most represented state with five Rebels representing Mississippi.
