HELLO FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL DR. PARNELL P. HAGERMAN Oldfields does indeed have much to celebrate as the School completes an incredibly successful school year and moves into a year-long celebration of our 150th Anniversary. I am in awe of all that this School has accomplished in the past year and throughout its 150 years of existence! This year in particular, I was struck by the ever-increasing energy of the students in their classes and activities, by the dedication the faculty demonstrates on a daily basis, and by the progress that we have made in the physical aspects of the campus. For the third consecutive year, enrollment has been at or very near capacity. Giving back to the School by parents, alumnae, and friends is rising steadily, but we need to continue to grow in all areas if we are to remain relevant in the increasingly competitive world of girls' boarding schools. Our mission has remained constant since the 1860s - to focus on each student's success so that each girl reaches her highest potential in and out of the classroom. Oldfields broke new ground when it became one of the first schools in the country to teach science to girls and to recognize the benefit of athletics for young women. We continue in that same forward-thinking tradition as we move into our 150th year. Our pursuit of excellence in our academic program has been strengthened by the following initiatives: • Twenty-one new, and predominantly honors, courses have been added to our curricular offerings. • The leadership team participated in an informative conference on Empathy, Intimacy, Technology and Social Media at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH, where we learned how to help our girls navigate their increasingly complex adolescent years. • New student-led clubs such as the STEM Club, the Chess Club, the Asian Culture Club, and the Powered by Speech Club enhanced the academic program. • An English Language Learning Program has been added to support the needs of our international students, who comprise 18% of our student body. • The Academic Strategies Program, a new signature program enhancing our trademark learning support program, will begin in fall of 2016 for students interested in a more comprehensive model of service. • A new educational technologist position was created to support the student and faculty use of the Brougher e-Learning Center, electronic gradebooks, 3-D printers, and interactive panels in the classroom. 2

Through the generous donations of alumnae and parents to the Spirit Campaign, we have accomplished the following campus enhancements:

• Constructed the new Garden House for faculty/staff housing • Built a new parking area at Old House for visitors and residential staff • Provided two new buses for student transportation • Installed a new roof on Old House and repaired its foundation. • Posted new directional signs around campus • Renovated Miss Nan's Library • Established the Brougher e-Learning Center • Installed a new gymnasium floor and remodeled the gym lobby • Purchased a new scoreboard for the gymnasium • Renovated the tennis courts

Instruction Designed to Unlock Potential

Opportunity for Discovery

Just as the May Program is perfectly aligned with Oldfields' mission, so too is our newest signature program, the Academic Strategies Program. Beginning in the fall of 2016, students will have the opportunity to enroll for additional support. The program is specifically designed for students with identified challenges in organizational skills, time management, and study strategies. A student in this program may have a diagnosed learning difference such as ADHD or executive function disorder, or may simply want additional instruction to make general academic improvements. The Academic Strategies Program encourages each girl to be as successful as possible, regardless of her learning profile and is designed to fit seamlessly into her existing academic schedule.

Although May Program is considered one of the "newer" traditions at Oldfields, this year was the 55th anniversary of Oldfields' unique experiential learning program. May Program was officially inaugurated on a school-wide basis in 1971 and consisted of a combination of trips abroad for foreign language students, "Capsule Courses" for those remaining on campus, and Senior Projects much like the Independent Projects we have today.

Students enrolled in the Academic Strategies Program are academically mainstreamed and tackle the same coursework as students not enrolled in the program. One "block," or course period, in their schedule will be dedicated to meeting with a learning specialist in order to focus on academic strategies for a 40 minute class, one to three times a week, depending on the tier that she chooses. All three tiers guarantee structured, individualized sessions with the learning support staff as well as consistent communication of progress with the student's family.

May Program makes you see the world from a whole new perspective.

Today's on and off campus trips allow girls to explore places, cultures, and concepts that they might not otherwise encounter. They gain a new perspective on their relationship to the world and to each other. From that very first trip in 1971 to Paris, to this year's trip to Belize's barrier reef, the May Program experience continues to change our girls forever. Associate Head of School Ansley Smithwick brings 37 years of experience to the classroom.

Each one - on - one session will incorporate facets of the following five components: • Academic Coaching • Strategy Instruction • Content Area Support • Skill Remediation • Social and Emotional Development

The First May Program: Tea with the Duchess Board of Trustee Chair, Hilary G. Swain '72, was on the initial May Program trip to Paris. Hilary's grandmother was able to arrange a visit with the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, arguably Oldfields' most infamous alumna! Hilary shared that she thinks her grandmother parlayed a minor injury (Hilary had a tiny accident involving getting hit by a bus) into a visit with the Duchess. Needless to say, the Oldfields girls were beyond delighted. Not all May Programs can deliver tea with the royal family, but it's safe to

Bobsledding in Lake Placid!

The first awards ceremony at Oldfields was held by the Athletic Association in 1923 at the end of the school year. In time, when academic and all-school awards were added to this celebration, it became known as the Annual Awards Ceremony. Have you ever thought about how all those names get there? Meet Al Papenberg, the talented and dedicated artist who has hand lettered each and every winner's name for over 40 years! Al shares, "I'm a dinosaur. No one does lettering by hand anymore, but the inconsistencies and imperfections are part of the charm." We couldn't agree more. Al first began lettering Oldfields' signs in the mid-70s. He is now retired in North Carolina, but returns to campus every summer at Barbara Latrobe's request to hand paint the 30 plus names of the award winning students. Al has such a long history at Oldfields that he remembers that the beautiful old chestnut plaque listing the May Queens was handcrafted by Jim Beck, the long-time and well-loved former Director of Maintenance. Next time you walk down the hallway in New House, take a moment to notice the beautiful craftsmanship of the hand-painted names, and realize that it's the uniqueness of each one that makes it beautiful, just like the Oldfields girls themselves.

Lana and Mr. Wister in the 1964 Olympics

Lana started riding and foxhunting as a young girl. At Oldfields she was on the Riding Team and was one of the very few riders skilled enough to be allowed to fox hunt. In a pattern that followed her throughout her life, she was unafraid to take on challenges and found ways to teach herself, albeit with the help of others, whatever she needed to know. Classmates remember her riding across the countryside on Good Luck, unaccompanied and finding her way alone, to compete in a one-day event in Harford County that included dressage, cross country, and stadium jumping. Just finding her way there and getting back to Oldfields was a challenge in and of itself, but she won that one-day event, which may just have been the seed that led to her quest to compete in the Olympics. It's significant to note that Lana guided herself throughout this process; she created her own road. She arranged to take clinics and lessons from famous trainers all over the country, became more and more accomplished, and in time, she and Mr. Wister, one of her mother's Thoroughbreds, made it to the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. However, she didn't stop there. Lana later changed her focus to combined driving events, and in 1991 was part of the gold medal winning team in the pairs division at the World Championships. Still later, Lana changed her discipline to endurance riding and most recently placed second in the USET Endurance 100 mile Championship aboard Nathan's Pride, making her the only woman to medal in three different equestrian disciplines.

This summer, as we follow the Games of the XXXI Olympiad on television, all of Oldfields' alumnae and friends can be proud of our very own Olympic champion, Lana duPont Wright '57.

That love of horses that lives in her genes is still just as powerful, and she continues to ride and foxhunt today.

In so doing, Lana made Olympic history by being the first woman to ever compete in the Equestrian three-day event in the Olympic Games. While her trip was less than perfect, she says of her ride and her mount, Mr. Wister, "We proved that a woman could get around an Olympic cross country course, and nobody could have said that we looked feminine at the finish." Her accomplishments in the 1964 Olympics have been chronicled endlessly in the press, and reading in more detail about her triumph on the internet is both fascinating and highly recommended.

What is an endowment? It's like a trust fund for Oldfields. The yearly investment return on the School's endowment funds covers a certain percentage of the operating budget, helping to pay for faculty salaries, financial aid, the electric bill, hay and grain for the horses, and so much more!

Oldfields' sources of operating revenue are tuition, gifts to The Oldfields Fund, and endowment returns. Our endowment currently stands at $8 million. Imagine how much more we'll be able to do when we add to that? And who better to honor when making our gifts than Anna Austen McCulloch?

In honor of the wonderful school started by Anna Austen McCulloch 150 years ago, we proudly introduce a new endowment fund named in her honor. Why? Schools with large endowments can spend more per student on educational services than schools without endowments or with very small ones.

Endowment funds provide a steady, predictable source of income over time on which the School can make commitments and build its programs. Oldfields' endowment is fundamental to the ongoing financial stability of the School, because the strongest and most stable schools have strong endowments.

The Alumnae Office's goal is to make each year's Alumnae Weekend even better than the last, so we changed things up a bit to keep it interesting. The cocktail party that is usually at the Head's House was held in the new Garden House, giving us a chance to show off our newest faculty housing before the ribbon cutting ceremony. The 120 plus guests had a fabulous time reconnecting as the party spilled out onto the porches, balconies, terraces, and lawn. What a fun way to kick off the weekend!

San Francisco. She also makes beautiful necklaces and sent me one! I am still at Brandywine Museum part time. I give tours at Andrew Wyeth Studio and NC Wyeth Studio - five tours a day. Our beloved Frolic Weymouth (Patty Weymouth Hobb's '53 brother) died. He created Brandywine Museum of Art and Conservancy and saved over 62,000 acres of land! I wish every Oldfields alumnae would visit the museum! Also playing duplicate bridge and taking any course about current events. So, mind is still intact. Being 80 is a hoot, so far!

Anne Haight Dutka - I made it back to my 45th and 50th and, as I remember, Ann Brooke Holt '48 was the only other one there for both.  It was amazing then to see all the changes, so it should be even more so now. It's hard to think our 70th (for the Class of 1948) will be coming up in a couple of years. My son-in-law and I belatedly celebrated my 85th birthday by going zip-lining in October in western Massachusetts, and I had a blast! All my kids (ages 58 to 55) are within 1.5 hours, and we get together often. I have no grandkids, only 3 "grandcats." I am still very active with a local hospital auxiliary and my church and serve on a local town committee so I am never bored. Best to all.

In Florida during the winter, I am on the Race Committee for The Sail Club, play golf, and enjoy woodworking at The Art Counter. I am excited about my granddaughter's wedding in September. Tillie Page Laird - In April, Hunter and I went to South Africa, Zambia,

and Zimbabwe, plus three different safari camps in Botswana. We saw the "Big Five" - water buffalo, rhino, elephant, lion, and leopard - and were chased (in a Land Rover) by a huge matriarch elephant. We also found a male leopard in a tree with his kill - a large male impala.

Antoinette "Toni" Carter Vreeland - I ventured down to OS for our 50th reunion in April, along with seven others from our class, and we had a blast! None of us felt like it had been that long since we walked down Graduation Hill because, of course, we all look like we're in our 30s! Ha!! In our dreams! We hadn't seen each other for ten years, but as usual, we picked right up where we left off. We had a wonderful time catching up with each other and plenty of laughs! Hopefully, we might get a bigger turnout at our next big one. I had a terrific winter down in Ocean Reef (Key Largo) and, among other things, attempted to improve my golf game, which seems to be an eternal wish! I'm now back in Bridgehampton for the summer. If anyone is out in my neck of the woods, I'd always love a visit!

not happened yet. I love hiking, kayaking, and gardening and am outside as often as possible walking my dog, a yellow lab/golden retriever cross, with a gentle kind spirit. I feel I have aged gracefully and still look younger than I am with short grey hair, blue eyes, big smile, and still 5' tall. Six years ago, I gave up TV and spend my time knitting, reading with an active library card, helping out at my church, St. Paul's, and spending time with friends. Four years ago, St. Paul's Church chose me as their Micah Hero, one who honors justice, loves kindness, and walks humbly with God. I was deeply touched to be chosen, as I was very deeply touched when Oldfields chose me for the Elizabeth Leeds Award for courage, unselfishness, and largeness of heart. and Cathy Hubbell Wilson '74, for whose father, Crawford Hubbell, one of the apartments in new Garden House is named, came back to campus for Alumnae Weekend. The three sisters joined Head of School Dr. Parnell Hagerman in doing the honors at the ribbon cutting ceremony. We were delighted to have the Hubbell sisters here for the ceremony despite the long distances (from Minnesota and Oregon!) they had to travel. Shortly thereafter, on June 4, 2016, Crawford Cox Hubbell passed away peacefully at age 90 with his family by his side. Crawford entrusted three of his four daughters to Oldfields and was a tremendously positive force on Oldfields' Board of Trustees from 1973-1987. Thank you, girls, for coming back and giving back to Oldfields. Your father will always have our gratitude, and his name will be a part of Oldfields' history forever.

I will return to work at Banfield later this summer after being sidelined since late January. by a broken upper right arm....slipping on ice getting a dog from the woods late on a dark Saturday night. Luckily a friend was nearby to call 911. Summer seems to be good for recovery, along with months of PT etc. Life returning to normal, finally! at Oldfields. When I graduated from Oldfields, I worked with the Grenfell Mission the summer before college, where I studied child development. I continued on to get my bachelor's in special education and elementary education and had a variety of teaching jobs for twenty-three years teaching in kindergarten, elementary grades, and as a reading teacher in elementary to junior high school in three different Vermont school systems. In June, 1996, the reading program I was teaching in was eliminated. In a leap of faith, I went to massage school in Vermont and now have a massage practice, Choice For Good Health, with a focus on relaxation and balancing body, mind, and soul. Sandra Washburn - During and after college, I was a social activist with public interest groups in Colorado, New York, and Washington DC. Later, armed with my newly minted MBA (1983), I settled in Dallas, TX. After a long career in the corporate world, I went back to school to earn my graduate certification in dispute resolution and mediated employment discrimination cases for the EEOC in Oklahoma. In June 2010, I began a program to introduce technology to level the academic playing field for blind and visually impaired students in Northern Uganda. We now also teach robotics and video game design to the sighted. We focus on secondary school students. I founded a 501c3 in the US and an international NGO in Uganda. Lulu Laubenstein Good - I had the honor of officiating at my nephew's

wedding in mid-June. I am happy to report I didn't inhale any bugs, and the wedding went off without a hitch! Our son, Anderson, is loving life in Washington, DC, and is looking forward to his second coaching season with the George Washington University squash teams. We are all working hard to pull together a wonderful 150th birthday party for Oldfields in 2017, so mark your calendars now for the last weekend of April!

Audrey Coxe Cadwallader '74 on Top of the World! What do Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, fifteen of the "fourteeners"(mountains in Colorado over 14,000 feet), and Mount Elbrus have in common? Audrey Coxe Cadwallader has climbed them all! An amazing feat for anyone, but made even more spectacular because, as Audrey explains, "I came to this passion late in the game." With a trip planned this summer to tackle Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, Audrey shows no signs of slowing down! At age 54, while visiting Telluride, Colorado, she rekindled a childhood passion for hiking mountains. Having a summer home in New England, she trains in Maine by walking on the treadmill at a 40% grade, hiking with 25-45 lbs. of weight on her back, and sometimes even dragging a tire along behind her! Audrey has had many life-changing experiences during her climbing

busy this past year with home projects, gardening, Questers field trips, volunteering, some travel, and spending time with family and friends. Spent a wonderful "girls' summer weekend" with my daughter, Louisa, exploring some New England coastline, catching up, and experiencing her world first hand. adventures, maybe none more powerful than her 2014 climb to base camp at Everest. Her group left basecamp one day prior to the deadliest avalanche in the mountain's history in which 16 Sherpas were killed. She was at base camp along with Joby Ogwyn, the wingsuit flier and BASE jumper, who was working on a Discovery Channel documentary at the time of the tragedy. "This experience brought home to me just how intense climbing truly is. There are some ways to protect yourself, but you are at the mercy of the mountain and survive by the grace of God. You choose the risk." Even after this tragic event, Audrey's passion for climbing did not wane. She is planning a trip this winter to Antarctica where she plans to climb Vinson Massif and ski to the South Pole! Audrey's son, Tim, shares his mom's zest for climbing. He is involved with organizations such as Climb for Conservation, a nonprofit that explores wild places in order to raise awareness and fundraise for important conservation issues, and Trekking for Kids, which fundraises for orphans living in the shadow of some of the world's most coveted adventure destinations. Audrey credits Oldfields, in part, for her determination and optimism. She remembers the guidance of Assistant Headmaster Taylor Smith and the Oldfields Riding Program which helped her to develop grit, discipline, and a desire to jump headfirst into her passions.

Audrey, you are truly an inspiration. Maybe some of your Oldfields sisters will join you on your next climb!

went on to buy and own The Body Shop, a British franchise business which I ran for 25 years on the island of Bermuda. I currently work four part-time jobs: I am a property manager for five houses; I work for various people maintaining small gardens; three days a week, I look after a middle-aged woman who had had brain cancer a decade ago, which sadly left her brain damaged; and I also clean homes/offices. My big 60 is this year. Still deciding what to do in celebration of this milestone. Any suggestions? Please let me know. Love to come to celebrate 150th of OS. However, it is the start of the America's Cup races in Bermuda in June 2017! My late father was one of the many people who was instrumental in getting it to come to Bermuda. Annievive "AV" Crain Palm - My husband, Tomas, and I are living outside Austin in an adorable town called Wimberley. It is in the heart of the Texas hill country and especially beautiful with wildflowers this spring. We have several rental properties: cabins, homes, and small wedding venues. 1979 Laura Carr - I'm getting some much needed hands-on experience with audio, such as the sound board operator for a local musical production. I'm working a small part of the sound board because there is so much to it, but it's part of a dream come true.

Lois Beck Dunbar - Hello everyone! Change is the only thing one can

count on in life. As many of you know, my father, James Beck, passed away on May 29, 2016. Although we are grieving, I took great comfort in seeing many familiar Oldfields faculty and friends at the viewing and funeral. I was able to inform my dad before he passed that he would soon be a great-grandfather to a baby boy.  The baby's name will be James. Thank you to all who shared their sweet stories about their memories of my father. Seeing him through the eyes of others lessened my grief. Hope everyone is well and thriving.

1978 Alice Wailes Steiner - I enjoyed Alumnae Weekend this year. The Garden House faculty apartments are beautiful! Lunch and dinner was very good.

Claire '15 is a rising sophomore at James Madison University. I have recently moved into the newly built Garden House. It is truly spectacular. Come and visit. We are in the midst of planning the 150th Celebration during Alumnae Weekend April 28-30, 2017. More exciting news - the School is not charging anything for the weekend because we want to encourage as many as possible to share and rejoice in this once in a lifetime celebration, but we hope that many will choose to make a donation honoring the history of the School or a beloved teacher or staff member. I can't wait to see all of my Oldfields sisters here!
