LEADERS OF TODAY AND LEADERS OF THE FUTURE The moment we decide to step into the journey of becoming a future physician, students are set into a trajectory of leadership. Even long before acceptance into medical school, future medical students are the ones who are leaders not only in their academic marks, but also in their communities, research and extracurricular activities.

In the spring of 2015, Jeffrey E. Jones, DO, volunteered to speak to second year medical students at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine about his experiences practicing rural medicine. Dr. Jones spoke of treating not only a community but also the many opportunities to serve outside of medicine through leadership, service and cinematic entertainment. This past summer, Rick and Larry Simpson began shooting their next family Western film titled Canyon Trail. The film is the most recent installment in The Justice Riders series put on by Skeleton Creek productions based out of Enid, Oklahoma. During the pre-production process, the Simpson brothers found themselves in need of an on set physician and an actor to play the role of Doc Parrish. Dr. Jones, a vibrant and expressive individual possessed the natural tools and rugged features (a goatee that would make A.T. Still, MD, DO, smile) to set him up for success in front of the camera.

enjoy the movie making process and Colorado scenery. Canyon Trail premiered to an audience of more than a thousand last November in Enid. Doc Parrish’s alter ego, Dr. Jones, was in attendance and when asked whether he could see himself pursuing a career in film he simply replied: “Ain’t likely.” The film will be released to DVD and available to the general public. To find out more about the family friendly Westerns made by the Simpsons and Skeleton Creek productions, visit www.skeletoncreekproductions.com.

Although Canyon Trail was his film debut, playing a physician in real life was second nature while on location in Kansas. During shooting, an actor was injured while riding a horse and required Dr. Jones’ professional prowess. The injured rider was assisted by an in-costume Dr. Jones prompting the question “Are you a real doctor or are you just playing one in the movie?” Later that summer, Dr. Jones and Lukken Imel, OMS-III, followed the Skeleton Creek production team to La Junta, Colorado, to serve as the medical staff while filming resumed at Bent’s Old Fort. Fortunately, no harm befell anyone that day and all were able to

The moment we decide to step into the journey of becoming a future physician, students are set into a trajectory of leadership. Even long before acceptance into medical school, future medical students are the ones who are leaders not only in their academic marks, but also in their communities, research and extracurricular activities. In medical school, students continue to make an impact in their communities, from fellow classmates to local and global groups. Osteopathic medical schools have unique curriculums to facilitate this process early in our education, and I am proud that Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-COM) has one of the best programs in our nation. This became extremely evident to me recently as I chaired the OSU-COM’s Student Doctor of the Year Selection Committee. This committee spends the majority of the fall semester looking at student and faculty-nominated student applications and chooses one student based on their dedication to osteopathic medicine, professionalism, leadership and contributions to the community. The winner will be named OSU-COM’s Student Doctor of the Year. Once named, the student will automatically be entered as a candidate for the title of 2015-2016 National Student Doctor of the Year, which will be announced at the annual American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Conference in early April. The process of choosing one student from our school proved to be difficult. There are so many well-qualified students within all four classes that have hearts for community service and a dedication to advancing health and preventive care through different platforms, including leadership,

policy change, and patient-centered care. The students here at OSU-COM truly demonstrate a dedication to the osteopathic difference. They are leaders today and will be the leaders of the future. Since all the applicants were so inspirational, the decision was difficult, but I am excited to announce that Matthew W. Smith, OMS-IV, is OSU-COM’s 2015-2016 Student Doctor of the Year. I have personally seen the passion Student Doctor Smith has for the osteopathic profession. He is a true advocate for students, contributing to many discussions around policy and policy change, serving as Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) National Political Affairs Director and National Resolutions Director. It has been a pleasure working with Student Doctor Smith, and he will do amazing things as he finishes his last year in medical school and heads into residency. His dedication to the osteopathic profession and activism exemplifies the strong leadership we have among our wonderful students here at OSU-COM. OSU-COM is distinctive not only in leadership, but also in having a school-wide passion to bring accessible health care to rural and underserved communities. Students start volunteering in local underserved areas starting their first years in medical school at student-led and run Rural Health Fairs. In addition, students have the opportunity to volunteer in globally underserved areas with DO Care and Power of a Nickel to multiple locations. Just this last summer, I had the opportunity to go with them to Nicaragua for an unforgettable and life-changing experience. I experienced firsthand the power of osteopathic manipulative medicine in places where musculoskeletal pain is rampant and where hands-on treatment by physicians is rare. Volunteering in Nicaragua this summer, brought me to a place where health care is hard to obtain and where I had to constantly step outside my comfort zone. I have witnessed the desperate need for quality health care and opened my eyes to the health care needs of not only Nicaragua, but also all around the world, even in our own backyards. In addition to volunteering with Power of a Nickel, students helped raise money for the cause, raising over $20,000. In addition to DO Care and Power of a Oklahoma D.O. | January 2016

Nickel, students can volunteer and do rotations with the Pros for Africa organization in Gulu, Uganda. Recently, the OSU-COM local Pros for Africa chapter raised over $10,000 at a completely student-organized black tie benefit dinner where all proceeds go toward St. Monica’s Tailoring School in Gulu.

OSU-COM students are here to make an impact, to lead, and contribute to the community. We are leaders of today and of the future.

In November, OSU-COM celebrated National Rural Health Day and hosted a Rural Health Focus Fair where students actively engaged in conversations with more than 20 rural health organizations and residencies. Often, a rural or underserved town only has one or even zero primary care physicians. That one physician usually will have to be proficiently familiar with multiple specialties because the community relies on him or her for everything from simple rashes to life-threatening illnesses. The passion for practicing in rural Oklahoma shows that the students care about these communities and are willing to bring quality health care to these areas in the future.

Finalists may be interviewed by a designated Scholarship Committee comprised of members of the OEFOM and/or their designees. Scholarship awards will be deposited with the Office of the Bursar of the College and credited for tuition, books, fees and other applicable educational expenses. Funds will not be payable directly to the student.

Other Information

Scholarship awards may be “stacked” with other scholarship awards or financial aid. However, the total of these awards, excluding loans, may not exceed the educational costs for the scholarship year. OEFOM will make available the minimum amount of scholarship funds allocated by September 1, annually. Applications are due by February 12, 2016, and awards will be announced at the OOA’s 116th Annual Convention. Certain “named” scholarship funds may place additional restrictions on awards. WHAT DOs NEED TO KNOW Improving Influenza Vaccination Rates Among Health Care Workers Flu Season Is Here What is your policy for influenza (flu) vaccinations among staff and physicians? Flu infections may lead to nosocomial outbreaks among patients and create staff shortages. Below are some interventions that have proven to be effective in improving health care worker immunization rates and will improve your performance on Ambulatory Surgery Center-8 (ASC-8), Inpatient Psychiatric

Oklahoma D.O. PAGE 22

Quality Reporting Program and Outpatient Quality Reporting Program (OP-27) measures: •

Provide free annual vaccinations for staff

Offer easy access, such as on-site vaccinations

Send reminders and incentives for vaccinations

Assign one person to be responsible for the vaccination program

Monitor and track health care professional (HCP) vaccinations and post rates in the employee break room

Implement a mandatory immunization policy that requires a signed declination for any HCP declining a vaccine

Now is the time to carry over lessons learned for the 2015-2016 flu season and set up a process for the current year. Here are some great resources to get you started: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Healthcare Personnel Vaccination Module: Influenza Vaccination Summary (PDF) http://www.cdc.gov/nhsn/pdfs/hps-manual/hps_manual-exp-plus-flu-portfolio.pdf
