Gone but not forgotten, a phrase we have heard far too frequently recently. A reminder of the loss we have all faced at some point in our lives, it also brings a smile to our faces knowing the joyful truth it simultaneously beholds. Dynamic duo, brothers Gage and Holden Winters, push each other to new heights inside and outside of the showring.

A third-generation cattlewoman raised in Sweetwater, Oklahoma, Chloe Sue McEntire has lived a life full of ranching Red Angus cattle, competing in sports, and spending time with family.

I am filled with a sense of anticipation and pride in welcoming you to the Oklahoma Youth Expo. The energy surrounding ‘The Greatest Show’ intensifies each year, creating an atmosphere of excitement. This event holds a special significance for me, having exhibited livestock here during my youth. Now, leading our team to coordinate this grand spectacle is both a privilege and a responsibility that I deeply cherish. Our mission is clear: to run the most exhibitor-friendly junior livestock show in the world. This is not just a statement; it’s our commitment to you, the lifeblood of the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Without your passion, dedication and hard work, this event would be nothing more than an empty arena. We believe in supporting not only our exhibitors but also their families and the agricultural educators who play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our industry. It is our distinct privilege to host what is proudly known as the ‘World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show.’ Our team is continually expanding our footprint across livestock shows. We proudly manage the Cattlemen’s Congress each January, an event hailed as the ‘World’s Largest and Most Elite Cattle Show.’ Additionally, the California Youth Ag Expo falls under our purview, allowing us to spread the spirit of OYE to new horizons. A significant milestone for us was the addition of EYO at the State Fair last year. We now manage the livestock shows at the Oklahoma State Fair, and our ambition is to cultivate and grow this show. Our goal extends beyond the ring, aiming to bring our exhibitor-friendly approach to the fair, uniting exhibitors and the general public to showcase the very best of the Oklahoma livestock industry. To our exhibitors, I extend my heartfelt wishes for the best of luck as you step into the ring. May your hard work and dedication be rewarded with success and unforgettable moments. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey, and here’s to the continued success and growth of the Oklahoma Youth Expo.

As we gear up for the 109th Oklahoma Youth Expo, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and excitement. We are not just any livestock show; we are the ‘World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show,’ proudly known as #TheGreatestShow. This year’s expo promises to be a celebration of stories that encapsulate the journey of our incredible exhibitors. In the heart of our event, we find seniors who have dedicated their entire junior career to the Oklahoma Youth Expo, becoming the backbone of our community. Their commitment is not just a testament to their love for showcasing livestock, but also a reflection of the invaluable lessons learned within these showrings. On the other end of the spectrum, we welcome newcomers embarking on their show career journey. The thrill of entering the ring for the first time, the nerves, and the excitement – all elements that make the Oklahoma Youth Expo a transformative experience for these budding showmen. Their journey is a reminder of the ever-renewing spirit that keeps our community vibrant and forward-looking. Beyond the confines of the showring, we encounter stories of triumph and success. Many attribute their career achievements to the foundation laid during their time in the Junior Livestock Program. It is a testament to the holistic impact that participating in our expo can have on the lives of young individuals. We take pride in being a stepping stone towards future success, shaping not just livestock enthusiasts, but also future leaders. At the core of the Oklahoma Youth Expo is our commitment to elevating our exhibitors. Our goal, shared by all of us at OYE, is to put these elite young leaders on the pedestal they truly deserve. They are the embodiment of resilience, passion, and dedication – qualities that make them stand out as the leaders of their generation. A phrase we have heard far too frequently recently. A reminder of the loss we have all faced at some point in our lives, it also brings a smile to our faces knowing the joyful truth it simultaneously beholds. The verity behind this well-known sentiment is evident in the legacy left behind by the industry leaders we have lost this past year. Across species, these individuals have contributed an impact that will never be forgotten. Together, they have filled a variety of roles. Be it parent, teacher, child, mentor – these figures have done it all. They are the people whose shoulders we have stood on, whose helping hands we have accepted. They have served as the root of priceless teachings and generously gifted, valuable knowledge. Together, these men and women have taught us many precious lessons that have shaped who we are, what we do, how we do it, and most importantly, why we do it. While the sting of loss can linger for often longer than desired, we are confident the legacy left behind by the heroes we’ve lost will endure even longer. The moments, laughs and countless memories made alongside these individuals will be fondly remembered forever. With their influence imprinted on the hearts and minds of a multitude of people, we are confident our towns, communities, state, and world are better places because of them. It goes without saying we are all better because of these staples in our lives and in our beloved industry. The Oklahoma Youth Expo is grateful for their steadfast commitment to the youth and adults across Oklahoma, especially those involved in the ‘World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show.’ We gladly accept the task of keeping their permanent legacies alive and well, evident in every fiber of ‘The Greatest Show.’ For, without them, the Oklahoma Youth Expo would not be the same. Here’s to our heroes – gone, but never forgotten.

The Showdown is a heifer showmanship contest held in conjunction with the Oklahoma Youth Expo, made possible by Livestock Nutrition Center. The Showdown is open to all OYE participants. Exhibitors may borrow a heifer to participate. No cattle outside of those entered for OYE may be shown. Exhibitors are required to show in provided long sleeve t-shirt.

For siblings Gage and Holden Winters, 2023 was certainly a record year. Filled with highs and lows, it was also filled with hours upon hours in the show barn. “Every day is pretty much spent going to school, competing in sports, then spending the rest of the time working in the barn,” Gage said, a freshman from Altus, Oklahoma. In perhaps the peak of their show career thus far, the Winters boys said going to shows and contending in the ring is their favorite activity. Given their close age and the intense nature of livestock exhibition, the two brothers spend most of their time together these days, Gage said. “We have definitely come a long way since we started,” he said. “When I was younger, I just wanted a show pig for fun, and now it is my favorite passion,” he added. Gage received his first show pig in second grade after begging his dad as a reward for receiving all A’s on his elementary school report card. From there, it spiraled into a deep love and eventually a friendly competition when his younger brother started to join him in the barn, he said. “It’s a team rivalry and also teamwork,” sixth-grader Holden said. “I will always try to beat him, but of course we still root for each other and help one another out,” he said through a smile. With both boys active in school, sports, 4-H, and FFA, the Winters family is always on the move. As a result of their busy schedules and numerous activities on their calendar, family teamwork is at an all-time high, Gage said. Whether it be an evening before a football game or the night before a show, everything manages to get done through helping one another in whatever ways are needed.

“When it comes to preparing for shows and performing daily tasks, it’s like a family event for us,” Gage said. “In between seasons or on days we don’t have sports, we will usually both go out to do all of the chores together. We have bonded a lot over pig showing and all of the time we spend together in that realm,” Gage added. As they prepare for the annual Oklahoma Youth Expo barrow and gilt shows, the family will travel to several different shows where they see friends and family – one of the best parts of showing livestock altogether, both Gage and Holden said. Though nothing beats the feeling of competing in the ring, both boys greatly enjoy traveling as a family and experiencing all of the fun that comes with it, Holden said. “Since we started showing several years ago, it has deepened my relationship with my brother and strengthened our bond,” Gage said. “When we go to shows, the big question is always which of us will get to show which pig. I think that though there are times we will each get the better pig, we know we want each other to succeed, and I’m grateful for that,” he added. That sentiment was on full display during the 2023 Oklahoma Youth Expo Gilt Show when Gage and Holden were in the same Crossbred gilt class. Despite the tough competition, Gage and Holden’s focus was on their pigs and one another, Holden said. “I knew he had the better pig, but I still tried to beat him,” Holden laughed. “It was fun getting to help Gage and know he was going to do his best to help me, too.” Gage said he was grateful for the opportunity because he probably wouldn’t have done as well had it not been for Holden. The brothers seemingly reached new heights from challenging one another to do their best, as each left OYE with a gilt in the esteemed Night of Stars Gilt Sale and barrows in the famed Sale of Champions. The greatest takeaway from their experience? The lessons learned and emotions shared amongst their family, Gage said.

“It was awesome feeling proud of how we did because we poured a lot of hours out into those projects,” Gage said. “And doing it all with my brother taught me how to depend on myself and others when I am on a team,” Holden added. Today, this dynamic duo is still learning together and building upon their playful sibling rivalry inside and outside of the barn. Their goals this year are to find out who the better showman is, Holden said, but more importantly, to continue their beloved family tradition for all the years still to come. – Written by Emile Mittelstaedt Learn more about the Winters duo!

A third-generation cattlewoman raised in Sweetwater, Oklahoma, Chloe Sue McEntire has lived a life full of ranching Red Angus cattle, competing in sports, and spending time with family. One of her newest designations, and one she is humbled to claim, is Champion Charolais steer at the 2023 Oklahoma Youth Expo. For McEntire, having success in the Big House has been a lifelong dream of hers. Being awarded a ride in the prestigous OYE limo prior to the Grand Drive is a moment she claims she will never forget, and for reasons other than her champion title. “It wasn’t just a win to me,” McEntire said. “The most meaningful part of it all was how big of a moment it was for my immediate family and show family. We got to see the hard work all of us put in day after day pay off, whether it was with a ribbon or not,” she added. As a young student who began showing steers and heifers at just eight years old, her biggest and boldest dream has always been to make her time in the ring count. As she approached turning 18 years old and embarked on her last OYE, she said the vision has remained the same throughout her time in the ring: to “go out with a bang and push my hardest to make it count.”

Though her big moment was a year ago, McEntire remembers it clearly. From moving in her Maine-Anjou and Charolais steers, to hugging her dad’s neck after securing a blue ribbon, to the excited nerves that fluttered in her stomach while walking on the red carpet, these moments have shaped her and impacted her life for the better, she said. “The experience was great all the way through,” McEntire said. “It was a great reminder that I’ve been fortunate enough to meet lots of wonderful people throughout the years, and it’s instilled in me the desire to work for what I truly want because it can bring you to become the person you truly are and are capable of becoming.” Despite the 2023 OYE being filled with hard-earned victory for McEntire, it was less successful for her other half and younger brother, she said. “The day of the steer show, my brother didn’t do as well as I did, but he didn’t even miss a beat or think about himself,” McEntire said as she smiled through grateful tears. “He was right by my side supporting me the entire time. And when I go to college next year, you can bet I will be back here, right by his side, supporting him through his career, too.” McEntire said this reminded her of all of the previous years she has come up short from her big dreams but still learned invaluable lessons along the way. Truly understanding how to graciously lose, find the indisputable good in every situation, and failing forward despite obstacles that occur are just a few of the insights she’s gained from the highs and lows that come with exhibiting livestock, McEntire said. From her work in the barn to the commitment she puts forth in the FFA classroom with speeches and livestock and land judging, McEntire’s passion has only continued to blossom with time and experience, she said.

“I can’t even put into words how this industry has helped me become the person I am today,” she said with a smile. “It’s been the biggest opportunity to just do what I get to do. My parents support me and help me to do my best in chasing my dreams. It means a lot to have people in my life who support me all the way through my career,” McEntire said. Today, McEntire is a Southwestern Oklahoma State University freshman pursuing a degree in agribusiness. Her career aspirations include returning home to operate and improve McEntire Red Angus ranch alongside her hero, her dad. Though she will no longer be stepping into the ring inside Jim Norick Arena as an exhibitor, McEntire said she is very much looking forward to spending another spring break at OYE to cheer on her brother and doing her part to help him make it count. – Written by Emile Mittelstaedt

Jason Harvey named the 2024 Sirloin Club Show Honoree

Jason Harvey grew up in Beggs, Oklahoma, where his family had a commercial cattle and show pig operation. His father was the agricultural education teacher at Beggs for 34 years, which naturally led to Jason later participating on various judging teams throughout 4-H and FFA, along with showing cattle, sheep and pigs. After graduating from Beggs, Jaosn attended Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton where he earned an associate degree in Animal Science and then attended Oklahoma State University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Agricultural Education. Jason has 27 years of experience with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, where he has held various roles including overseeing state and federal grant programs, the Made in Oklahoma program, and Market News. Jason also travels around the state serving as the official for cattle grading contests for 4-H and FFA members. Jason is a graduate of the Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program, Class I. He was the recipient of the OSU CASNR Alumni Early Career Achievement Award, OSU Graduate of Distinction for Agricultural Leadership, and awarded the Honorary American FFA Degree at the 2021 National FFA Convention. Jason has been a member of the Oklahoma Youth Expo swine committee for 20 years, as well as the general livestock superintendent at the Tulsa State Fair for 15 years. Jason and his wife Melanie reside in Beggs with their children Alyse (11) and Grant (9). Jason Harvey has volunteered with the OYE swine show for decades. We are proud to present him with the Show Honoree Award.

Foundation A renowned Oklahoman, Jimmy Harrel has served as a pillar of the Oklahoma Youth Expo

There once was a young man from western Oklahoma, with a passion for the agriculture industry and a fire in his belly to someday leave a lasting impact on not only the industry itself, but also upon the people in that industry he cares for deeply. He was raised on his family’s farm, learning the importance of a hard day’s work and the value of a handshake, both pillars of Jimmy Harrel’s foundation. After college, he returned home to teach agricultural education and work with young people, assisting them in finding their passion within agriculture. Together, Harrel and his wife, Marilyn, settled in western Oklahoma, working to mold the minds of Oklahoma’s future agricultural leaders and prepare them for success. He continued to strengthen the love he uncovered in his high school years – livestock. This is something Harrel continued in his adult life and is a fondness he passed down to his children and his students.

Throughout the years, Harrel cultivated relationships that took him beyond the classroom. In the 1980s, he had the opportunity to enter the banking business and has since worked every day to make the Bank of Western Oklahoma a predominant agricultural lender in Oklahoma, serving the industry he cares intently for. Though he may have traded his blue jeans in for a suit most work days, he still spent plenty of time in the barn and attending livestock shows across the country with his daughter and grandchildren. Harrel’s infectious aspiration to find the next great steer and never shying away from the hard work necessary to later find victory in the ring always fueled his drive. In Oklahoma, there is certainly no shortage of stock shows. Whether it be the 1980s or today in 2024, the opportunities to exhibit livestock in this great state are ample. Yet, one has always held a special place in Harrel’s heart. The Oklahoma Youth Expo, formerly known as the Oklahoma Spring Livestock Show, was a show he exhibited at as a young man and one that his family and students frequented. However, just like any century-old organization, there were good times and challenging times. In the early 2000s, which proved to be a difficult time for the show, Harrel and Bob Funk, both accredited Oklahomans with a true affection for agriculture, saw an opportunity to resurrect the Oklahoma Spring Livestock Show with goals of putting the show and state on the map. In 2002, the pair officially formed the Oklahoma Youth Expo, a non-profit organization with a mission of promoting agricultural youth and providing an environment for them to showcase both their livestock and hard work each Spring. Harrel knew from his personal experience in the showring that making it an exhibitor-friendly event was critical for the show’s long-term success. Together, he and Funk set out to find a dedicated staff who shared their understanding of putting a day’s worth of work in and who also called the livestock industry home. With great effort and collaboration, these men secured funding, promoted the show and encouraged young agriculturalists to exhibit at OYE. Harrel’s wife also saw an opportunity for women like herself who shared an admiration for the industry to support this growing cause and formed the Diamond Hats, a women’s organization with the goal of encouraging the youth of Oklahoma as they pursue their agricultural endeavors. The Harrel duo worked concurrently to ensure the success of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, continually looking for ways to better showcase exhibitors. With earnest effort and devotion to the task at

hand, they helped dream up and begin the iconic Grand Drive that the livestock world knows of today. From the initial days of involving Funk’s Clydesdales and Marilyn’s red carpet for the champion exhibitors to parade down, the OYE Grand Drive has evolved into the spectacle it is today. And – this duo has been there every step of the way. Today, Oklahoma is the proud home of ‘The World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show,’ no small feat. It is indisputable that OYE is a true testament to the commitment leaders like Jimmy and Marilyn Harrel instilled in the organization. The Oklahoma Youth Expo will forever be grateful for this young agricultural education teacher who possessed a fiery passion for the agriculture industry and Junior Livestock Program. Harrel’s belief truly changed the course of the show industry in Oklahoma, as well as the United States. Stock shows across the country turn to the home we all know and love as a model for ways they can elevate their ag youth, several even attempting to recreate the acclaimed OYE Grand Drive. When other organizations ask for advice on how they can grow to be of the size and caliber of the Oklahoma Youth Expo, President Tyler Norvell always states, “You don’t have the two things we have: Mr. Jimmy Harrel and Mr. Bob Funk.” Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Youth Expo are forever thankful for the long-time loyalty and quality that shines through figures like Harrel. Administrators are nominated through an essay application by student and teacher representatives. It is of the utmost importance to the future of agriculture, to

MR. CURTIS SHELTON BRISTOW HIGH SCHOOL

Mr. Curtis Shelton, Superintendent of Bristow Public Schools, plays a critical role in all of Bristow’s educational programs, and this is especially true for the school’s agricultural education program. Each and every day, Mr. Shelton works diligently to provide funding and resources to help the program grow and succeed. This includes everything from purchasing new equipment and supplies to funding field trips and other educational opportunities for students. He has also worked closely with agricultural education staff to develop and implement new programs and initiatives that help students learn about agriculture in a fun and engaging way. As a strong advocate of agricultural education himself, Mr. Shelton actively promotes the Bristow agricultural program to the community. By doing this, he has helped raise awareness about the program and its importance, which has, in turn, helped to attract new students and supporters to the Bristow program. From forming encouraging relationships to supporting students as they pursue opportunities, Mr. Shelton goes the extra mile to help students succeed.

MR. CHRIS WHELAN WEBBERS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL

Mr. Chris Whelan is more than a supportive school administrator, he is a true friend of the Webbers Falls 4-H and FFA programs. As both the school superintendent and an agriculturalist at heart, Mr. Whelan shows his passion for the junior livestock show and agricultural education programs in countless ways. From working at locally hosted shows, checking livestock, cooking at meal functions and more, Mr. Whelan truly sees the importance of these programs in the Webbers Falls school system. He sees how they change students’ lives, and he makes sure they have the necessary resources to be successful. And, he does it all not because he has to, but because he loves it. You’ll see him in the background, clapping, smiling, giving the kids a high five and a hug after every event, regardless of the outcome. The true definition of a supporter, Mr. Whelan is a staple figure when it comes to providing opportunities to students. He is dedicated to making the Webbers Falls agricultural education program, school and community the best he can.

MR. JASON LINDLEY HARTSHORNE HIGH SCHOOL An outstanding leader, example, mentor and supporter to Hartshorne schools and the agricultural education program is superintendent, Jason Lindley. A native to the town, Mr. Lindley has deep roots and appreciation for Hartshorne schools and its community. He is truly a selfless leader that always puts the students first. It is not uncommon to see Mr. Lindley at shows holding a clipboard to make sure all the exhibitors are ready to hit the ring or setting up cameras to live stream the show so those who can’t attend can watch from home. Mr. Lindley is the type of man that leads by example and is always there to practice what he preaches. Mr. Lindley was also very instrumental in acquiring funding for and creating Hartshorne’s new agricultural education building that includes an agricultural mechanics shop and meats lab. He understands the complexity of a strong agriculture program and strives to provide opportunity for the teachers and students involved with Hartshorne FFA. There are many examples of his thoughtfulness and labor that he has put into the local program and students. The school system is fortunate to have a friend in Mr. Jason Lindley.

It is no secret life is full of surprises. The twists and turns, the highs and lows. In the livestock industry, that seems to prove particularly true. With seasons of success come seasons of hardship. But, amidst all of the inevitable change and fluctuation, one thing has remained constant in the life of Kingfisher senior, Myka Elliott: “The harder we work, the luckier we get.” This quote has been a staple in her show barn all throughout her career. Residing above the barn door, Elliott says this simple saying has shaped her mindset and show experience since the day it was put into place. “It’s just engrained itself in my brain,” Elliott said. “In all areas of my life, those words have stuck with me and reminded me of the importance and value of working hard.” Having been raised on a club lamb and ewe operation in Calumet, Oklahoma, Elliott said her character, passions and life experiences have been molded by her involvement in the livestock and agriculture industries. To Elliott, and countless others active in the Junior Livestock Show Program, it’s this industry that has helped her to become the person she is while simultaneously teaching her invaluable lessons and skills she is sure to carry with her forever, she said.

Today, with many shows and years of experience under her belt, Elliott is a senior at Kingfisher High School. With her mind set on finishing her final year of competing in the ring strong, Elliott said she is putting her best foot forward and working hard inside and outside of the barn. “These moments of ending are the most special to me because they matter the most,” Elliott said. “Though I am aiming for success, it’s not about the banners at the end of the day, but more so about the memories that are made along the way,” she added. One of the final times she will be given the opportunity to step into the showring is one she is looking forward to most: the 2024 Oklahoma Youth Expo. As she prepares to get her three wether lambs ready for OYE, Elliott said she is focusing on being as consistent as possible. From consistency in ensuring animal health, to wrapping legs and exercising, to consistently putting forth her best effort, this challenge is one she is gladly taking on. Her 2024 show goal is to secure a coveted spot in the OYE Grand Drive. “As I approach the end of my show career, I think this final year of OYE I will be striving to make it into the limo and have that feeling of, ‘oh my gosh, this is it,’” Elliott said through a smile. Having shown in the OYE Grand Drive already, Elliott said it is a feeling she will never forget. In fact, it’s a feeling she often reflects on for motivation to keep progressing onward with her projects, she said. “Going to OYE last year, I think it was the hardest I ever worked with my lambs,” Elliott said. “Being awarded the title of Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2022

OYE was certainly an eye-opening experience, and having my sisters on the sidelines makes me emotional to think about because it was an exhilarating experience,” she added with a grin. With high hopes to enjoy every last moment still to come in the final stretch of her senior show season, Elliott said she is eager to see what’s in store and to show others her truth: The harder we work, the luckier we get. – Written by Emile Mittelstaedt Learn more about Myka and her time in the barn.

The Oklahoma Youth Expo and livestock shows as a whole serve as the perfect venue for raising the next generation of leaders. Each year, thanks to our generous partners, the Oklahoma Youth Expo awards more than $350,000 in scholarships. OKL AHOMA it just feels right

Prior to 2022, Romero had never been to the Oklahoma Youth Expo, even as a spectator. When he came for the first time that year, he said he remembers thinking how incredible it was to witness such an elite show. Whether you are an exhibitor, showman, breeder or general attendee, Romero said OYE is an elevated stage to compete on, “a whole different animal than any other show, that’s for sure.” In the months leading up to the ‘World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show,’ Romero said he was fueled to work diligently day-in and day-out, but he faced a couple of challenges he had to work through, notably his personal nerves. “Like most everyone else who exhibits livestock, I was honestly really nervous I was going to mess up and make a big mistake in the ring,” Romero said. “In the end, that was a good challenge for me to work through, and I ended up having a run I can be proud of.” At the 2023 OYE, Romero successfully competed with multiple barrows and does. The most special success was winning second place with a doe that he and his brother chose together out of their kickout pen. Romero was also a member of the champion OYE Doe Fitting team alongside his friend, Denver McKay. From all of the knowledge gained, the experiences had, the lessons learned, and the banners won, Romero is sure the most important asset he’s gained is the people. “Being able to meet the people that I have, all of the mentors and professionals, just getting to be around individuals of such a high caliber…it’s been awesome and something I am incredibly grateful for,” Romero said. In fact, from the very beginning, Romero claims the influence of others has been one of the most instrumental parts of his story. All of the people he’s met along the way are who got him involved in the industry and ultimately got him to Oklahoma, he said. “I honestly don’t think it gets any better than this,” Romero said through a smile. “I am around some of the sharpest people and minds in the country every day. Whether we are sorting goats or working babies, it’s always a learning experience because I get to listen and interact with them daily,” he added. Still a proud Oklahoman, Romero is currently a freshman at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma, where he participates as part of the Livestock Judging Team. For most kids involved in the Oklahoma Junior Livestock Program, turning eight years old is a significant milestone. Not quite to double digits, yet turning eight means you can finally show at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. If the timing aligns, one can get nearly a decade of show time with OYE before their age eligibility expires, but for pig and goat showman Roberto Romero, one year was all he got. Prior to beginning his Oklahoma show career, Romero made the move from his home in Georgia to the small town of Mulhall, Oklahoma, in 2022. “I had been coming to Oklahoma since about 2019 and working summers at Pfeiffer Farms in Orlando,” Romero said. “After visiting a couple of times, I really enjoyed it and began forming a plan to move to the state permanently.” Romero said he knew showing livestock and participating in shows like the Oklahoma Youth Expo were activities he wanted to take part in, despite being nervous to start. “My little brother exhibited goats down in Georgia, and it’s a lot different when you’re the one taking care of them and showing them,” Romero said. “It’s a lot tougher than people think.” Once he became an Oklahoma resident, moving in with his oldest brother, John, Romero began showing goats and pigs at shows across the state. One of his first experiences in the showring in Oklahoma happened with his goats in 2022, with the help of John. That same year, he said he became hooked when he won the title of Reserve Overall Senior Showman at the 2022 Tulsa State Fair. “After that experience, we decided to turn up the jets a little bit more,” Romero said. “So, we put in the work and prepared for OYE a little bit more seriously,” he added.

The Oklahoma Youth Expo would not be possible without the greatest individuals in the Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture, and this year’s Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Encounter class members are certainly no exception. OALE is a program designed to expand the knowledge of the agricultural industry for today’s young adults, which is a major focus for the Oklahoma Youth Expo board of directors and staff. Class members have the opportunity to travel across the state and absorb industry knowledge as well as gain exposure to the legislative process firsthand. Finally, the students will have the opportunity to join ‘The Greatest Show’ as an invaluable staff member. It is with great pleasure we introduce the 2023-24 class of OALE students who are the future of our tomorrow.

ALEXIS LAKE LARAMIE, WYOMING A native of southeast Wyoming, Lake found her passion for agriculture at a young age through her involvement in 4-H, FFA and showing livestock. Now an animal science senior at OSU, Lake previously attended Butler Community College to judge livestock and was recently deemed an All-American. Upon completion of her bachelors degree, Alexis hopes to pursue higher education within meat science.

KYRA ELLIOTT CALUMET, OKLAHOMA

Growing up in central Oklahoma, Elliott was raised on a club lamb operation where she spent many years showing lambs across the United States. A meat science and agribusiness senior at OSU, Elliott has cultivated a strong passion for meat science, specifically in the field of research and development. In the coming year, Elliott plans to begin her master’s degree in meat science and begin a career in the industry following.

BILLY MARCHY CERES, CALIFORNIA Joining us from the Pacific Coast, Marchy was raised on a fourth-generation dairy farm. Aside from involvement in the barn, Marchy and his family also farmed almonds, corn and hay. Now an agribusiness senior, Marchy is involved in a variety of organizations across campus and hopes to one day pursue a career in agriculture and own his own farm.

PAYTON LYYSKI ELLENSBURG, WASHINGTON With roots in Washington state, Lyyski has been involved in agriculture her entire life. Showing her first bottle calf at three years old, Lyyski showed steers throughout the Pacific Northwest. When she first attended OSU, she decided to major in accounting and now hopes to obtain her CPA after graduation in May 2024 with the goal of serving as an accountant in the agricultural industry.

MASON SMITH ELK CITY, OKLAHOMA An agribusiness senior from Elk City, Oklahoma, Smith is a fifth-generation agriculturalist who grew up showing lambs, a tradition his family continues to this day. Smith served as a legislative intern this past spring, solidifying his interest in agricultural policy. After he graduates in May 2025, Smith seeks to serve Oklahoma farmers and ranchers by attending law school and diving in to agricultural law.

CARSON WESTBERG BEND, OREGON Originally from central Oregon, Westberg is a senior studying animal science. Prior to his time at OSU, he attended Linn-Benton Community College and received an associates degree in Heavy Equipment Mechanics which he utilized working in the Oregon logging industry. Upon his graduation in May, Westberg plans to be involved in the agriculture industry by increasing the efficiency and success of feedlots in our growing world.

LARAMIE COFFEY MORRISON, OKLAHOMA Coffey’s journey in the agriculture industry began at a young age, shaped by a show cattle operation that served as both her playground and classroom. Staying steadily involved in the livestock industry by means of several internships, she is now a senior studying agricultural communications with aspirations to obtain a role within a breed association or livestock show — a platform where she can merge her professional skills with her passion.

JAYCEE WATKINS ALLEN, OKLAHOMA

ERIC SCHAFER TAYLORVILLE, ILLINOIS Born and raised on a central Illinois row crop and livestock operation, Schafer grew up showing hogs and cattle at the local, state and national levels. Prior to transferring to OSU, Schafer attended Butler Community College where he was on the livestock judging team. He is now a senior as well as a member of the most recent OSU livestock judging team. He is still involved in his family’s cattle operation and hopes to continue that legacy in the future.

GRACE BRYSON LABADIE, MISSOURI An animal science and agricultural communications junior at OSU, Bryson spent years showing pigs alongside her family. Bryson has always had a love for writing and storytelling, as well as the animal production industry, which is what led her to her dual degrees. In the future, Bryson would like to work in communications and marketing within the meat science industry to help better connect people to what is on their plates.

SHAWN HILLIARY ELGIN, OKLAHOMA Hilliary joins us from Elgin, Oklahoma, where he was raised on a commercial cattle operation and first began exhibiting steers. He is currently a junior studying agricultural education and is heavily involved at OSU. Hilliary plans to keep his Oklahoma roots and teach ag while educating the upcoming generations about the vitality of production agriculture while promoting agricultural literacy in a time where it is more important than ever before.

MAGGIE JOHNSON CHURUBUSCO, INDIANA Hailing from the Midwest, Johnson is an agribusiness senior who grew up on a fourth-generation hog and grain farm. No stranger to the cattle barn, Johnson has had the opportunity to work and learn from some of the leading cattle operations in the country, as well as gain experience in financials and insurance. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in agribusiness following her undergraduate degree in May 2024.

Watkins is currently a senior majoring in animal science with a minor in pre-veterinary/pre-medical studies. She grew up showing livestock from a very early age and was heavily involved in her local 4-H and FFA chapters all throughout school. Upon graduation, she plans on continuing her education at veterinary school with hopes of aiding in the shortage of large animal veterinarians in rural Oklahoma.
