How to Get Your Legs Ready for Summer [ Dominic Pedulla, MD ]

A

s the temperature of summer rises, so does the hemline in most women’s wardrobes. Shorts, skirts, and lest we forget, swimsuits, all call for women to show off the legs that were hidden under jeans and slacks all winter long. In order to look your best in these shorter styles, a few steps can be taken to help accentuate your legs. It doesn’t take long to get your legs ready for summer.

PHOTO PROVIDED BY STOCK..XCHNG

1. Exercise. Toning up your legs by walking, doing lunges or lifting weights will make your legs look great for those short shorts and skirts you’ll want to wear during summer. Bike riding is also a great summer sport and will give those leg muscles a great workout while adding the benefit of a light cardiovascular workout. 2. Moisturize. Dry legs tend to accentuate the faults. It will only take a couple of weeks of regular attention to moisturizing to get your skin in shape. Generously apply lotion after your shower in the morning and before bed every night. Applying lotion immediately after your shower will help lock-in moisture. Routinely exfoliate with a great moisturizing scrub every now and then to get rid of the dry skin cells.

Also don’t forget to moisturize your inner body. Hotter days are approaching, meaning you can easily become dehydrated. Make sure that you are drinking enough water through out the day. By Dominic M. Pedulla Remember, dehydrated skin MD, FACC looks dull and does not regenerate well. Drinking water will help improve your skin. 3. Get A FAKE Tan. Slather on a quick bronzer or a self-tanning lotion. A good fake tan also accentuates muscle tone and hides cellulite. Tanned legs appear longer and slimmer. But no amount of REAL tan is worth the look of a FAKE tan! Always remember to apply a high level UV sunscreen when in the sun to avoid skin cancers and sunspots. The sun causes the skin to age rapidly, and does not do anyone any favors! 4. Guard Against Bug Bites. Nothing looks worse than legs with sores from mosquito or chigger bites. When outdoors, use an insect repellent to avoid bites from outdoor pests. Check out the new moisturizers that have built in sunscreen and bug repellants for additional protection.

5. Get A Health Check and Get Rid Of Spider Veins and Varicose Veins Now! Unsightly varicose or spider veins can make the difference between a good summer and an amazing summer. Visible and obvious varicose veins are a source of shame and insecurity for many people. Those pesky veins that tend to travel up and down the back of even the most beautiful legs can be distracting. Getting rid of them takes only a few minutes with todays most advanced laser treatments, and can leave your legs healthier and more beautiful. In fact, it’s so easy; it will give you a reason to show off your legs again! Best of all, most insurance companies will approve the use of the laser as a medically necessary procedure. If you suffer from ugly spider veins or painful varicose veins, give The Oklahoma Vein and Endovascular Center a call and we’ll be happy to offer you a FREE consultation. It only takes a few minutes to have your veins evaluated. An ultrasound exam can show where the veins are failing, and that information is usually enough documentation for your insurance company to approve your procedure. You’ll be looking forward to baring your legs in the warmer weather in no time.

osing weight is never easy, especially when you are trying to lose a significant amount of weight. And those who do succeed in losing large amounts of weight often find By Juan Brou, M.D. they are left with a new problem -- sagging, excess skin. That’s exactly where Rita found herself. Thrilled with her 180 pound weight loss, Rita was mortified by the large amount of sagging skin that remained. “Naked wasn’t pretty,” she quipped. So, Rita came to me for advice and to learn more about what might be accomplished through cosmetic surgery. I was able to provide counsel on what realistically could be accomplished through surgery to address her concerns. Together, we decided the best course of treatment for Rita would be a whole body lift, a procedure that removes an apron of excess skin and fat, and repositions and tightens tissues.

In recent years, I have seen a significant increase in the number of patients seeking this type of procedure and currently perform two or three body lifts each month. The increase in successful surgical treatments (gastric bypass surgery) for dramatic weight loss is thought to be fueling this sharp increase in demand for body lifts. As a procedure, the whole body lift is one of the most challenging. I also find it to be one of the most rewarding because the results can be so impactful for the patient. These individuals have worked so hard to lose their unwanted weight. It can be quite frustrating to reach your goal weight, but then find that the new leaner you is buried beneath excess skin – something that no diet, body cream or exercise can erase. To be able to give these individuals their dream end-result is very rewarding. Here is a quick snapshot of what the body lift procedure entails. The body lift is similar to a tummy tuck, except that it goes all the

way around the body through the buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips and thighs. The surgery is long. It often takes from five to nine hours to complete. A patient’s dress sizes can drop dramatically following body lift surgery. I have seen patients drop from a size 14 pre-surgery to a size 8 after. Rita shed 20 additional pounds with her body lift and we were able to eliminate all of her excess skin. She told me that she had spent years being held back by her weight. She didn’t enjoy shopping and she rarely traveled by airplane because she needed to purchase an additional ticket. With her weight loss success and subsequent body lift procedure, it’s a whole new world for Rita now. She called the procedure the best thing she ever did. Embrace Stretching Getting better workout results could be as simple as a stretch.

A

s summer falls upon us, many people want to get in “swimsuit” shape. This may include losing weight, cutting out soda, or just plain eating better. Many people also start new exercise programs, and do not know that they should stretch before and after exercise. Stretching can prevent and heal injuries, increase flexibility, and overall improve your health when done properly. A benefit of stretching is it can help prevent and heal injuries. Stretching warms up the muscles by getting the blood flowing. Many athletes stretch to prevent cramps that can occur during competition. Another benefit of stretching is increased flexibility. Many people that have desk jobs have tight low back muscles and hamstrings. Stretching can help increase the flexibility of these muscles. Flexible muscles are less likely to be injured. Remember when starting a stretching program, the goal is to increase flexibility and functioning of the muscle. You are not trying to induce pain. If you are feeling pain during a stretch, try decrease the intensity of the stretch by not going into the

stretch as far. If there is still pain, stop doing the stretch and ask your doctor what you should do. The stretch should be a little uncomfortable. If there is no feeling of tension or a slight ache (but not a painful ache), then the stretching is not being done effectively. For proper stretching, the stretch should be held for 20-30 seconds, without bouncing. If the stretch is not held long enough, it will not be effective. If the stretch is held too long, or done with bouncing, injury could occur. The more often you stretch the more effective stretching will be. You do not, however, start out by stretching four times a day. Start by stretching once or twice a day and gradu-

The more often you stretch the more effective stretching will be.

ally increase the frequency as your body adjusts to the stretching program. Just like any new exercise, it takes one to two weeks of stretching before you will notice any changes in flexibility or function of the muscle. So do not get discouraged if it seems that the stretches are not helping. It is also important to be patient with yourself, do not push too hard because the stretch is not working fast enough. Remember there is always another way to stretch the same muscle. So do not let yourself get bored. Stretching can be fun, and having a wide variety of stretches will help you keep your interest and motivation to continue stretching. You can always ask your doctor for another stretch, a different variation of a stretch, or even for an opinion on a stretch you discovered yourself.

IORT:

Battling Breast Cancer on New Ground

slight differences in the way the tissue is prepared, but after completing the procedure there is no visible trace of the radiation. One of the advantages of IORT is that it can destroy microscopic tumor cells left behind by surgery before the cells have a chance to divide or migrate to other areas of the body. In addition, the treatment and recovery can be much quicker. Additionally, the radiation is applied directly to possibly affected tissue, helping to avoid exposure to healthy tissue, says Dr. Frame. Crosskey, who lives in Cheverly, MD, was impressed with the efficiency of the treatment.

“I was back home within two days of my surgery and feeling great and it’s been onward and upward since then.” Crosskey was able to return to work within two weeks of treatment. With IORT, Crosskey had no additional radiation treatment. “I am thankful that IORT was available for me. The cancer had not metastasized, and that was very lucky” said Crosskey. Not all women are candidates for IORT, but those who are may be able to reduce or eliminate the amount of external radiation required after their operation. This benefit is especially important for many women with young families, full-time jobs or other life commitments that make a long regimen of radiation difficult. “IORT potentially allows for a shorter radiation commitment, if not a single radiation treatment intraoperatively,” said Dr. Frame. “Many patients who require radiation as part of their breast cancer treatment can have at least some of their radiation treatment intraoperatively with IORT. That creates several advantages, not the least of which is shortening the number of trips a person has to make if they live outside the area.” CTCA is excited to offer this cutting-edge technology to its patients. Although the technology is often used for breast cancer, it may also be a possibility for other cancers, including head and neck, lung, stomach and more. For CTCA, adding IORT to its arsenal of technologies, “It’s another example of CTCA’s willingness to push the envelope for new ways to care for cancer patients,” said Dr. Frame. For Helen Crosskey, being able to use IORT was one thing she was able to use to her advantage in her fight against cancer, but her recovery has been much more than that. “I always tell people that they, as patients, have some things to do. You have to become a participant in getting better. Now it’s not about dwelling on how I got into this situation – it’s how I get out.” No case is typical. You should not expect to experience these results.

hen Helen Crosskey was diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew she wasn’t going to be able to sit around the house and patiently wait for things to get better on their own. Instead, she got busy figuring out what to do. “Cancer does not make a good playmate; it’s spreading while you’re ignoring it,” said Crosskey. When she went to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Crosskey learned that she was a candidate for a type of radiation new to the center. The Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) Novac7 technology allows patients to receive radiation treatment, delivered with the same power and precision as other advanced radiation techniques, while still in the operating room undergoing surgery, often without any additional outpatient radiation treatment visits and with fewer side effects. IORT can also offer patients better cosmetic results and improved quality of life as the need for additional radiation treatment may be minimized or eliminated altogether. Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Tulsa and Philadelphia are the only hospitals in the nation that offer the Novac7, which was brought to the US from Rome, Italy. Though new, this technology has unique benefits. “In the case of breast cancer, IORT is the application of radiation directly to the tissue that needs it, without any other organs getting in the way” said John Frame, MD, breast surgeon for Cancer Treatment Centers of America. “Once the machine is in place during the operation, the radiation is delivered in the operating room, by the radiation oncologist and physicists, for the prescribed amount of time and dosage. The preparation and the delivery add just a few minutes to the operation, and the wound is closed normally.” Overall, adding IORT to a breast surgery such as a lumpectomy does not drastically change the time or preparation. Gestational Diabetes? Healthy habits can help prevent diabetes in your future

G

Keep up healthy habits — even after the baby is born. Many women who have gestational diabetes see a dietitian or a diabetes educator to guide them in developing healthy habits during pregnancy. But what many women don’t realize is that it’s just as important to keep up with those healthy habits even after the baby is born. If you are a woman who had gestational diabetes, it is important to get tested for diabetes 6 to 12 weeks after your baby is born, and at least every three years after that. It is also important to reach and maintain a healthy weight by making healthy food choices, such as following an eating plan lower in fat and calories and high in fiber, and being active for at least 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Even if women do not reach their “goal”

Holly’s Story

weight, research shows that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce risk. Busy? Build physical activity into your day one step at a time. Physical activity is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight and preventing type 2 diabetes. Set a goal to be active at least 30 minutes, 5 days per week. If you have not been active, start slowly, building up to your goal. Take small steps to include physical activity in your day-to-day routine. Busy moms can use these tips to get started: • Park your car farther away from the store, movie theater, your office, etc. • Get your friends and family involved. Set a regular walking date, such as after dinner. Or do something that all ages can enjoy — shoot hoops, take a bike ride, or just dance around the house. • Take a walk during your lunch break or push the baby’s stroller around the mall. • Don’t just watch the kids at the playground ... play with them. • Deliver a message to a co-worker in person instead of by e-mail, and take the stairs instead of the elevator. • Exhausted from a busy day and just want to plop on the couch in front of the TV? Use the commercial breaks to stretch, take a quick walk around your home, do some situps, or march in place.

Holly Romans was diagnosed with gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with her first child. After the baby was born, a blood test showed Holly’s blood glucose was back to normal, so she didn’t think any more about it. But later a followup test showed she was at risk for developing diabetes. She shared her history of gestational diabetes with her daughter’s doctor and a note was made in her daughter’s health record. Holly also made sure a note was made in her own health record as well. Holly joined a diabetes prevention program at a local hospital and learned how to have a healthy lifestyle for herself and her family. She lost weight by making small changes in her daily routine, such as replacing her chocolate snack-cake stash with fresh fruit, preparing more salads, eating smaller portions, and taking daily walks. In just a few months, Holly’s glucose numbers had returned to a normal level. And thanks to her lifestyle changes, she did not develop gestational diabetes when she became pregnant with her second child. Today, Holly knows she needs to continue her healthy lifestyle habits and get tested for diabetes at least every three years. Holly continues to work to keep her weight down by doing aerobics and walking with her two kids. She makes sure she and her family maintain a healthy lifestyle by staying physically active and making healthy food choices.

estational diabetes is diabetes that is found for the first time when a woman is pregnant. If you had gestational diabetes when you were pregnant, you and your child from that pregnancy have a lifelong risk for developing diabetes, a serious disease that can lead to health problems such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease and amputations. The good news is there are steps you can take to prevent or delay diabetes and lower that risk for yourself and your child. “Women with a history of gestational diabetes can lower their chances for developing diabetes by taking steps to reach and maintain a healthy weight, making healthy food choices, and being active,” according to Judith Fradkin, M.D., of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. “Keeping a healthy lifestyle as a family is good for everyone.”

What is LASIK?

asik has been around for nearly 15 years now and modern innovations in the technology have opened the door for people who were not candidates in the past. The proceBy Dr. Ralph A. Latimer, dure is safer and more preOD, FCOVD dictable than ever before. For the right candidate, laser vision correction is truly a life-changing procedure that is designed to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A hinged flap of corneal tissue is created and then folded back to expose the middle section of the cornea. A computer-controlled excimer laser then reshapes a portion of the cornea in a unique pre-specified pattern for each patient. The flap is gently replaced without sutures which allows for a rapid visual recovery. Procedures: Old versus New To better understand the differences between LASIK procedures it is important to understand that no two eyes are identical. Several types of visual imperfections, referred to as lower- and higher-order aberrations, exist within the eye and may affect your vision. Lower-order aberrations are nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astig-

matism. However, there are also uncorrected tiny imperfections or distortions in every eye, even when the most perfect glasses or contact prescriptions are used. These imperfections cause higher-order aberrations and are responsible for halos around lights, poor night vision, and glare. Conventional LASIK In the older ‘conventional’ LASIK procedure, the laser reshapes the cornea to match the patient’s glasses prescription (lower-order aberration). Conventional LASIK is still being performed and can be an option for many patients. However it does not correct for higher-order aberrations and in some cases creates them. Custom LASIK Custom LASIK is designed to customize the treatment of these higher-order aberrations that, in the past, could not be adequately treated with glasses, contacts or even conventional LASIK treatments. Custom LASIK uses a wavefront analyzer to measure the way light travels through an eye and creates a customized 3-D map that looks at the entire optical system, including higher-order aberrations. Because this system detects and maps the higher-order aberrations, it can also treat them, since the wavefront data guides the extraordinarily precise excimer laser. This is the procedure I recommend for most of my patients.

Creating the Flap There are two methods of creating the corneal flap in LASIK surgery. The original method utilizes a mechanical bladed device known as a microkeratome. This older technology is relatively safe but cannot be customized to match the shape of an individual’s eye. The second method, known as Intralase or ‘Bladeless’, uses a specialized laser to create the flap. This technology is uniquely able to program the dimensions of your flap based on what’s best for your eye. I highly recommend the bladeless procedure to my patients as it usually provides for a more precise result with better vision and an increased margin of safety. Here are a few factors to remember when considering LASIK. When looking for LASIK provider, be wary of confusing or misleading marketing strategies. Avoid discount LASIK providers that might cut corners in equipment, testing, laser calibration requirements, and post-operative care. I explain to my patients that factors such as the degree of their glasses prescription, lifestyle, health, age, and the thickness of their corneas all play a role in determining if they are a candidate for LASIK. Talk to your eye doctor to determine if LASIK is the right option for you. Please visit www.LASIK.com for more information about LASIK.

Flawless Skin can be yours with PIXEL

What is the Pixel Laser? Pixel is a new FDA approved Laser based skin resurfacing procedure utilizing ablative fractional technology to enhance the appearance and texture of skin. Pixel is an Erbium-YAG laser, which can be applied to the skin of the face and neck as well as any other areas of skin on the body, including the shoulders chest, hands or back. The benefits of Pixel include: tightened skin, reduces or removes the appearance of discoloration, decreases pore size, and im-

proves scarring such as that due to keloids and reduces acne. Patients also report improvement in skin condition such as acne, stretch marks, and inflammation due to ingrown hairs (folliculitis), and in dry or oily skin. With each stack of the hand piece of the Pixel Laser, a tiny ‘pixelated’ pattern of ablation is produced on a fractional area of the skin by the laser. With the Pixel laser, 65 percent of the area treated remains “as is” untreated around the Pixel Therapy treated areas. The treated area is similar to a microscopic waffle pattern, with the waffle indentation areas representing the areas of ablation by the laser. The non-indented areas of the “waffle” represent zones that are untouched by the laser. These untouched areas serve as a reservoir for normal skin cells (fibroblasts) growth factors and connective tissue elements which promote the rapid repair of the injury zone of the newly-lasered skin. New epidermis begins to appear in the treatments zones with in 24 hours. With passes of the laser hand piece, the skin is treated pixel by pixel or spot by spot until the areas of concern are completely treated. In so doing, the ‘downtime’ that would be associated with procedures that involve the non-fractional or total ablation is minimized. How the Pixel Laser facilitates Skin Rejuvenation The skin resurfacing effect occurs with several passes of the laser over the affected skin to remove damaged outer layers of the epidermis, and through the heat the laser imparts, to stimulate the production of collagen and new skin cells in the underlying connective tissue layer of skin. The new layer of collagen allows the der-

mis layer of connective tissue to become thicker. The chemical cross-linking of the collagen fibrils, a part of the collagen remodeling process, permits a contraction phenomenon, which on a macroscopic level leads to skin tightening. If you want flawless skin, contact BodyTrends to learn more.

hy can’t I have beautiful skin like all the Hollywood stars? Why does my skin look older than what it should? Can I do anything about my wrinkles without By Dr. Harvey having a face lift? Jenkins, MD These are questions that you have asked yourself. Everyone wants young-looking, beautiful, radiant skin. Aging, sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle choices (including nutrition, alcohol and smoking) all play a role in how rapidly or slowly our skin ages and how healthy our skin appears. People with ‘perfect’ skin will tell you their secret to fabulous and flawless skin is avoiding excessive sun exposure and tanning, a healthy diet with adequate building blocks (protein) and co-factors (Vitamin C, E, A, and Zinc), and various regimens of skin care. In Oklahoma City, Laser Skin rejuvenation has become an important tool in reversing the effects of aging and the environment, as well as those life-style choices which impact negatively on the appearance of the skin.

Generations: Grandpa "Bud" Manning, Uncle Steve Manning, SPC Mike Manning and his son Leaun.

rmy Specialist Michael Manning heard with the rest of the world that Osama Bin Laden was dead on May 1, and on May 6 he was deployed to Afghanistan. Manning and others will be spending 13 months there working to remove members of the Taliban and help with the stabilization of the country. What will he be doing? He is a gunner who sits in the nest of an MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle ready to go. SPC. Manning is from Guthrie, Oklahoma and is married with two small boys ages 3 and 4. As with any soldier, it was difficult to leave his family. His youngest son is autistic and his wife, Kristy, has medical problems of her own. SPC Manning, a third generation soldier, like his grandfather and father before him heard the call, and enlisted to serve his country. “I have kids and I don’t want to stand be-

hind them, I want to stand in front of them and protect them,” Manning said. The Manning’s have a great support system here at home. Kristy’s family lives nearby to help out whenever she needs them; SPC. Manning’s mother lives on the 60 acres of land behind them, and can drive through the back gate and be there in no time. His two boys, Leaun and Christopher are too young to understand what it is their father is doing. Manning said he has tried to explain to them that he has to go to take care of the bad guys, but they don’t understand. The oldest thinks that his ACU uniform is a costume. So before he left he told them that he was going to work. Communication will be limited, he will be able to SKYPE with Kristy when he is not on a mission or the Forward Operating Base is not on blackout. a modified protocol for Type I diabetics, adolescents and children. The Ideal Protein team encourages people who want to get healthy and lose weight not let the cost keep them from learning about the program. “How do you put a price on your health?” Walker asked. Curtess explained that most insurance companies cover the cost of the office visits. Participants must weigh in every week and there is no additional cost for the weekly visit. The cost of the Ideal Protein products is approximately $90 per week during Phase One, and the cost decreases as participants move through Phases Two through Four. “If you really sit down and put pencil to paper and are honest with yourself about where you spend your food dollars, the cost of the program isn’t far from what you spend in an ordinary day,” Walker said.. According to Dr. Tien, the cause of most weight issues in today’s society is insulin dysfunction. A diet grossly disproportionate in its share of saturated fats and sugars, such

as in breads, cereals, muffins, cakes, pastries, pasta, pizza, rice, corn - very much like the North American diet - causes the pancreas to produce an overabundance of insulin, which stays in the system and puts the blood sugar level in a negative balance. Eating habits of today’s population have produced an increasingly obese nation. Because of this, many people suffer from Syndrome X, which is a cluster of symptoms that may be caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors that increase a person’s risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. If you have two or more of these risk factors (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes) you could have Syndrome X. According to The Center for Disease Control, a little more than one-third of the US population could be characterized as having Syndrome X. The Ideal Protein plan at LMC may be what saves you from Syndrome X. Check it out by registering online for a free workshop at LoganMedicalCenter.com.

hat started out as a pilot program for 20 employees at Logan Medical Center has turned into a ton of weight loss - literally. There are now 93 people who have lost a combined 2,198 lbs. and 1,704 inches and are committed to getting healthy and losing weight. “I’m completely off my diabetic medicines,” said Steve Smith, who is among the group on Ideal Protein, a medically-managed weight loss program that has the Guthrie community taking charge of its health. ”It’s a health do-over,” he said. Smith has been on the plan for three months and has lost 35 pounds. “This is not just a diet, it’s a pancreatic treatment program,” said Lisa Curtess, the physician assistant who oversees the program at LMC. “Our focus is on getting our patients healthy.” Patients on the program have decreased their medications, while some have completely eliminated their medications, like Smith. Others have decreased swelling so their arthritis is better; most have lowered or are completely off their blood pressure medicine. “Can you imagine the implications of this program?” Curtess asked. “As a medical provider we want nothing more than to have our patients take control of their health and lead a more productive life.” Tears come to the eyes of Kim Walker, Guthrie, as she expresses the success she and husband Dell have had since starting on the plan in January. They have lost 30 and 64 lbs., respectively. They said they feel better about themselves and feel as though they are getting their lives back. The Ideal Protein coaching team at LMC requires participants to attend a free workshop to learn about this pancreatic treatment program. Ideal Protein was introduced 25 years ago by Dr. Tran Tien, who developed it to help Olympic athletes train. The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method is an easy four-phase protocol that helps stabilize the pancreas and blood sugar levels while burning fat and maintaining muscle and other lean tissue. On average, women lose weight at the rate of three to four pounds per week and men four to seven pounds per week. There is also

id you know that there is an entire industry of highly trained professionals whose job it is to help retailers out-smart you the next By Dan Johnson, time you go to the store? Payne County As an American consumBank Vice er, your shopping methods President and preferences have been analyzed, studied, surveyed, re-analyzed, and contemplated by some very smart and talented people. According to “Why We Buy—the Science of Shopping,” authored by Paco Underhill, it is in fact considered a study of modern anthropology. Our society is over-retailed. In this crowded retail environment, most new merchants have to do whatever they can to steal market share from other stores. Unfortunately for customers, some of these retailers resort to one or more methods of chicanery in order to capture another dollar. As it turns out, human behavior exhibited during the shopping experience is quite predictable. Many merchants, especially

the large chain stores, use this predictability to increase the average sale per customer per visit. Did you know that American shoppers tend to move to the right while inside stores because that is the way we drive? Did you know that women’s stores are not organized in such a way for men to buy? (No wonder most men go a little crazy when shopping with their wives!) And finally, the pièce de résistance: the longer you spend in a store, the higher your likely total outlay. To be fair to the merchants, they are simply doing what they can to increase sales and bolster their bottom line. Understanding consumer behavior and using this information to improve the shopping experience seems reasonable to me. The managers of these companies have a duty to their owners to provide a reasonable return on the investment that was made in that business. I admire a successful business as long as it operates fairly and honestly in all respects. To level the playing field a bit, I simply want consumers to be savvy shoppers, and to be aware of the various methods that retailers use to increase sales.

The truth about financing How many of you remember the time when you had to actually visit your local bank to obtain a loan? That was before the days of the now commonplace in-store financing; before the days of the CREDIT CARD. Back in that day, major purchases such as a new appliance, an automobile, or a home required a trip to the local bank. This trip to the bank was far more beneficial than we may have realized at the time. Before making such a purchase, one had the benefit of counsel from the local banker. A visit with the local banker included a discussion about what was needed, the options available to satisfy the need, and advice about reasonable repayment terms. Most likely it also would have included a reminder about a local business, perhaps even in the same town, who sold the very item that was needed. Nowadays, when desire strikes, it doesn’t take a second thought to whip out a plastic card and spend thousands of dollars on a non-essential item that may take years to repay.

The Skinny on Exercise 26 / 50+ Fitness 28

Ben Coffman of Fit Body Bootcamp

Universal Rewards of Exercise for Men The number one reason that most men are out-of-shape is lack of exercise.

I

’ve often wished that I could give everyone I meet a personalized pep talk to get them off the couch and into the gym. So here’s my pep talk in bullet form.

1. Reset your body. Exercise has been described as a giant reset button. A good workout will block appetite swings, improve your mood and get better sleep. 2. Your clothes fit better. Consistent exercise will build muscle and tighten your body, causing your clothes to fit and look better. 3. Reduce stress. A good workout invigorates your muscles, leaving you relaxed and less stressed.

photos provided by stock.xchng

4. Increased energy. WebMD tallied research studies and concluded that exercise increases energy levels in sedentary patients. Next time you feel fatigued; fight it with the most powerful tool available, exercise. 5. Increased strength. Exercise improves muscle strength and endurance, the two things that you use daily. When you exercise consistently difficult tasks begin to seem easy. 6. Reduce binges. Exercise has a powerful anti-binge effect on the body. This is due to an increase in sensitivity to leptin, a protein hormone, which has an appetite-taming effect. 7. Burns calories. Excess body fat is made up of stored and unused

calories. Fight fat by burning calories with fat-blasting workouts. 8. More confident. Who doesn’t wish they walked and talked with more confidence? A consistent exercise program will do just that. 9. Have fun. Believe it or not, exercise can be enjoyable. Remember how fun it was to run around as a child? Tap into your inner child as you find a mode of exercise that gets you excited. 10. Lowered blood pressure. Exercise has proven to be more effective than medication in reducing blood pressure. A single workout has shown to reduce blood pressure for the day and regular exercise will reduce overall blood pressure. 11. Lose the jiggles. Regular exercise tightens flabby arms, legs and the mid-section. 12. Increased insulin sensitivity. Researchers at Laval University in Quebec discovered that exercise improved insulin sensitivity. After-meal insulin levels dropped more than 20 percent after as little as 3 weeks of consistent exercise. 13. Better sleep. Your tired muscles will encourage your body to fall asleep quicker so they can get their overnight repair work done. 14. Lowered risk of heart disease. Regular exercise strengthens your heart making it more resilient against disease. A sedentary lifestyle is a major risk factor for heart disease; consistent

exercise is your ally against disease. 15. You’ll feel great. Vigorous exercise releases natural endorphins into your blood stream that dissolve pain and anxiety. 16. Lowered risk of diabetes. Studies show that exercising as little as half an hour each day can dramatically reduce your risk of diabetes. If you are at risk of diabetes, or have diabetes, regular exercise is the most effective treatment for reversing the disease. 17. Meet cool people. Gyms, boot camps, workout centers and even the jogging trail are all great places to connect with fun new friends. 18. Improve your BMI. Maintaining a healthy BMI is the key to disease prevention. Exercise is the best way to keep your BMI under control. 19. Increased endurance. Do you get winded when walking up stairs or through the mall? Regular exercise increases your endurance for daily activities. 20. Make your doctor happy. Has your doctor lectured you about losing weight and exercising more? Exercise regularly and get your MD off your back! 21. Look better. Regular exercise works wonders on your physique. Within a few weeks you’ll see improvement in all the right places.

s a fifth grader, Scotie Conner weighed more than he does now as a high school senior. His weight and cholesterol were approaching dangerously high levels. With a history of heart disease and stroke in his family, Scotie knew he didn’t want to continue down the path to an unhealthy life… and the consequences it brings. “I was one of those ‘1 in every 3 children’ who are overweight or obese,” said Scotie, “so I decided to take action.” To start, Scotie cut out junk food, ate more fruits and vegetables, and swam or exercised some other way at least an hour a day. “After a year and a half, I ended up losing more than 40 pounds and have become a happy, healthier person,” said Scotie. “It is possible to make positive lifestyle changes – even at a young age,” said Scotie.

“Young people may think becoming healthier is really difficult, but it all starts with taking a few simple steps,” he said. Now 17 and a senior at Casady High School in Oklahoma City, Scotie was selected in 2009 to serve on the National Empower Me Youth Advisory Board for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. “The Youth Advisory Board was a perfect fit for me because I saw how there were thousands of kids in America and Oklahoma that were suffering from childhood obesity, just as I had. This was my chance to help them make healthy changes in their lives,” said Scotie. Scotie’s leadership on this issue ranges from local to national levels. He has taught health classes to other students and served as the facilitator and youth leader for the first Oklahoma City Youth-Hosted Forum held in April, in partnership with the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition and the Edward L. Gaylord Downtown YMCA, where he and other youth

Discussed the complexities of childhood obesity and healthy living, Shared stories about how they are taking control of their health, and inspired each other to make further changes within their lives, families, schools and communities. In 2009, he was nominated by his AP Government teacher to attend the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. Most recently, he was selected to the United States Senate Youth Program. Scotie’s personal experience and passion for health is an outstanding example of how a young person can take control of their own health and inspire other youth to do the same. t seems every day there is a new form of exercise out there guaranteeing to burn calories and get you in shape. OK Health and Fitness Magazine looked at some of the most popular exercises and this is what we found.

ZUMBA® ZUMBA® Fitness is a Latin-inspired dancefitness program. The program uses dance steps from 13 different styles of dance. The routines feature training sessions with fast and slow rhythms and resistance training. ZUMBA ® Fitness offers different classes for all age groups including an aquatic workout. The amount of calories burned during ZUMBA ® varies with the type of workout and the weight of the person exercising. There are more than 1,000 classes available in Oklahoma. Because of the popularity of the program most colleges, community centers, and fitness centers have a ZUMBA ® class available. ZUMBA ® videos are available online and in popular retail stores. Pilates Pilates emphasizes proper breathing, spinal and pelvic alignment and concentrates on smooth flowing movement. Pilates exercises help you develop strong core muscles. The core muscles include the abdominal muscles and back muscles. Pilates elongates and strengthens muscles, and improves muscle elasticity and joint mobility. It is safe for all age groups, because most of the exercises are performed in the reclining or sitting positions. The exercises are low impact and are partial weight -bearing on the joints and body . There are more than 350 Pilate’s classes available in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas. Cycling This is an activity that almost everyone learns as a child, is still one of the best exercises. You can ride almost anywhere and anytime of the year. Bicycles are affordable and easy to maintain. The health benefits of cycling include lower blood pressure, building stronger bones, promotes a healthy heart, improved digestion, better lung function and joint flexibility, and the list goes on. Family members of all ages can get out and enjoy a bike ride together. Remember when cycling to wear the proper safety equipment and obey the laws in your area.

Walking A safe and gentle form of exercise that is healthy for all age groups. No special equipment is necessary, just a good pair of shoes with proper support, comfortable clothes and a safe place to walk. Whether you chose to walk in a mall, a museum or in a park, walking is an exercise you and your whole family can enjoy. According to reports from the Mayo Clinic, walking can help lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol, lower blood pressure, help with weight management, help reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes and help manage it, can help you stay strong and fit, and improve your mood. Pick up a pedometer and set goals to take so many steps each day and walk your way to a healthier you.

The Skinny on Exercise

Jogging/Running Before you get started consult a physician and make sure you have the proper shoes for running. Running shoes are specifically designed for absorbing and minimizing forces on the body to prevent injury. Avoid crosstrainers, tennis shoes and regular sneakers and get the proper shoes, your feet and body will thank you. You should stretch prior to jogging. Stretching helps reduce injury and warms the muscles prior to jogging/running. Stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, and hips and flex your feet. One of the keys to jogging is to start at slow pace, once you get your heart pumping, you will breathe a little heavier than normal. Do not run until you are completely winded. Make sure you are relaxed with your head upright, your shoulders should be down and your back straight. Your arms should swing or pump forward freely. You will use less energy if you keep your elbows close to your sides. When jogging the mid-sole of your foot should strike the ground as you roll on to your toes. Steps should be light. Avoid slapping your feet against the ground. Running can help keep your heart young, and strengthen your muscles and bones, increase your sex drive, improve sleep, slow down the aging process and improve your cardiovascular endurance.

Runyon Learns New Sport at 52, Still Rowing at 63 [ By Sherry Andrusiak ]

J

im Runyon can appreciate a good exercise program. That’s what he needed 13 years ago when his health began declining. “My doctor said 50 is a common age for hereditary health issues to kick in. Everything went south and I knew I had to get active,” he said. Runyon remembered the sport he’d seen while touring Europe in the 1970s – rowing. “I saw a group of rowers on the waterfront while in Denmark and thought it was a beautiful sport.” So when his wife saw an ad for a learn to row class in the paper, a 52-year-old Runyon signed up. He continued with the sport as a recreational rower until 2008. “I was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer and needed surgery. Thanks to my

years of rowing I passed the pre-operation stress test in the top 10 percentile for my age group – I was 59 at the time – and being fit before my surgery helped me recovery faster.” Runyon’s treatment regime resulted in weight gain, motivating him to return to the sport in 2009. Now 63, the 6-foot-tall Runyon is a healthy 195 pounds and can brag how his active lifestyle has kept his blood pressure around 109 over 68. “As you get older you lose mobility. I believe having a strong core and strong legs help address this, and those are the major muscles you build while rowing. Plus, rowing is easy on your joints. I want to continue rowing as long as I can; it’s really a lifelong sport.” Runyon now rows three to four days per week with the OKC RIVERSPORT masters team and plans to compete at the US Rowing Masters Na-

tional Championships, a four-day event that will be held in Oklahoma City August 11-14. “There’s a competitive person in me. When you’re rowing it’s so exhilarating – it’s difficult to explain the feeling you get unless you try it.” Runyon trains at the Chesapeake Boathouse located in downtown Oklahoma City’s Boathouse District. “I saw [Boathouse District] grow from a dream. I’m still amazed at how the city has embraced rowing. It’s a super thing for the renaissance of Oklahoma City and a great asset for keeping our community fit and healthy.”

Osteoporosis in Men's Health

O

steoporosis is a disease that leads to fragile bones because of a decrease in bone mineral density. Many people think that osteoporosis is only a concern for By Ken post-menopausal women. Schaecher, DPT, OCS While it is true that this disease is more likely to affect women, it can also be present in men. The National Institutes of Health report that nearly 2 million American men have osteoporosis. A scientific study in the American Family Physician journal states that the rate of osteoporosis in men is between 4 percent and 6 percent. For men over the age of 50, the prevalence rate increases to nearly 20 percent. In comparison, the American Cancer Society estimates that the over a lifetime, 1 in 6 (16.67 percent) American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Most men are much more famil-

iar with the importance of cancer screening then they are for osteoporosis. Unfortunately, many men are unaware of their risk for developing osteoporosis. Few men ever talk with their primary care physician regarding whether screening for osteoporosis is necessary. For those who do not undergo screening, the first sign that the disease is present is usually a fracture. Typical osteoporotic fractures include those of the hip, spine, and wrist. The statistics following hip fracture are troubling. Within one year following hip fracture, the mortality rate is as high as 20 percent. Osteoporotic spinal fractures can lead to the stooped over posture seen in far too many elderly people. Osteoporosis typically affects older adults. Peak bone mineral density occurs in young adulthood and declines from there. Because of this, it is never too early to take steps to help reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Things that can reduce your risk of developing this disease in-

clude limiting alcohol consumption, working toward smoking cessation if you are a smoker, and becoming more physically active. Bone adapts to the stresses put on it. Too little stress on the bones may lead to quicker loss of bone density. Physical activities that include resistance training and weight-bearing positions are ideal for helping prevent the loss of bone mineral density. Activities and exercises that are valuable in this respect include walking, jogging, weight training, and sports such as tennis, racquetball, and basketball. Stresses too great can lead to stress fractures so it is important to know your limits and not increase your weight bearing activity levels too rapidly. Consult with a health professional before starting any new physical activity to make sure that you are healthy enough to begin a fitness regimen. Talk to your doctor if you think you may be at risk for developing osteoporosis. If you have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis then speak with your physician or physical therapist regarding types of activities that will help maintain bone mineral density without putting you at risk for fractures.

Grilling Up a

Festive Summer Feast Simple cooking tips to create a delicious barbecue

S

ummer is filled with family picnics and barbecues, but you need to make sure that those burgers and pasta salads aren’t served with a side of bacteria. Celebrity Chef Cat Cora is an expert at overcoming the complexities of cooking with exotic ingredients, including ostrich, oysters and venison; but even working with everyday staples, like chicken, beef, eggs and fresh vegetables, can present cooking challenges. These foods can carry common bacteria, such as E. coli, Salmonella and Staph — all of which can thrive throughout the cleanest kitchen. To help spread awareness about better kitchen practices, Chef Cora partnered with Ultra Palmolive® Antibacterial Dish Liquid, offering tips and providing simple so-

lutions to help prevent cross-contamination in your kitchen. Research shows that bacteria can easily spread to kitchen surfaces while preparing even the most simple of meals. Studies have found that: • Bacteria on a cutting board can Adouble after ten minutes of use, whether cutting raw meat or vegetables. • Ten percent of bacteria on a cutting board can transfer to lettuce during chopping. • E. coli that remains on washed and dried dishes can survive up to three days. “Like all moms, I want to provide the best for my family while creating memorable meals at home,” said Cora. “Cleaning throughout the cooking process gives me peace of mind that I’m doing all I can for my family.”

Serves 6 to 8 2 each crookneck or summer squash, baby zucchini, large whole carrots, large fennel or 3 medium fennel bulbs 5 to 6 shallots Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper Extra virgin olive oil Ginger Citrus Mayonnaise 3 juicy oranges, grapefruits, Meyer lemons, mineolas, tangerines, Mandarins, blood oranges, etc., cut in half (6 halves total) 3 tablespoons (or more for desired consistency) store bought preferred mayonnaise Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger Preheat grill for vegetables. To make the mayonnaise, squeeze all the juice out from 5 of the 6 citrus halves into a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. When juice begins to boil, lower heat to medium-high and reduce juice until thick and syrupy, being careful not to let it burn. Remove from heat, pour into a bowl, and allow to cool slightly. (At this point you can grill the vegetables). Whisk in mayonnaise, ginger, and cayenne pepper until smooth. Squeeze in juice from last remaining citrus half, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Cut all veggies in half lengthwise, rub all sides sparingly with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Grill, cut side down first, for 4 to 6 minutes if small, 5 to 8 minutes if large pieces. Flip so skin side is down, and grill all an additional 1 to 2 minutes, until all veggies are firm but easily sliced with a knife. Serve on platter alongside bowl of ginger citrus mayon naise or drizzled on top of vegetables.

Top 5 Tips for

Perfect Grilling

Royalty

1. Clean and pre-heat your grill on high. 2. Lightly oil and season food before you put it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking. 3. Sear the outside of steaks when grilling, using tongs or a spatula to turn the meat. Cover the grill as much as possible during the grilling process to help lock in the great flavor and to prevent flare-ups. 4. Use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side, then grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food. This will give you an evenly cooked product.

his Father’s Day, give Dad the royal treatment by creating a feast that combines his two favorite things — the grill and steak. Whether you serve the King Tenderloin with Red Velvet Demi Glace, the Duke of Sirloin with Pub Rub, the Count Strip Loin with Parmesan Crusted Crown, or the Barron of Ribeye with Royal Forest Butter, His Majesty will savor every mouthwatering bite. And when you follow these grilling tips and cook his steaks to perfection, he may very well proclaim you Master of the Grill. Count Strip Loin with Parmesan Crusted Crown Serves 4 4 Omaha Steaks Strip Loin Steaks 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, reshly ground 1/2 cup aged Parmesan cheese, finely grated 4 teaspoons Italian parsley, chopped 1. 5. Place your cooked food on a clean plate and allow to rest for five minutes before serving to retain moisture and juiciness.

Cat Cora’s Tips During the summer, and throughout the year, use Cat Cora’s simple tips to reduce cross-contamination in your kitchen: • Keep mayonnaise-based foods, fresh meat and seafood at 40°F or freeze it. Bacteria may grow more quickly when items are stored at the wrong temperature. • Thaw frozen meat and seafood in the refrigerator on a paper towel-lined plate, not on the countertop. • Use a glass cutting board when slicing raw meats and vege tables. The surfaces of plastic and wood cutting boards can be cut by knives during food preparation, and bacteria may hide in these porous areas. • Clean as you go, washing prep tools and the sink after each use with a dish liquid such as Ultra Palmolive® Antibacterial Dish Liquid to help kill bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and Staph when used as directed.

How to cook up a mess with kids

n Baking and basic food assembly is the easiest way to branch into messy culinary play. Cut up fruits and vegetables to make fun faces, or simply mix together homemade dough to play with and shape. (See recipes.) n Age is just a number! Allow even the youngest chef to help by pouring ingredients like flour, sugar and eggs into a bowl. n Start simple. No-bake cookies, smoothies and sandwiches are a great start. If using a cookbook, start with one that has pictures for each instruction. n Pour on the praise! No matter the outcome, always encourage their effort. Remember, practice makes perfect. n Spills happen. Take it in stride and simply use the opportunity to teach clean-up. Know the Glow Clues to childhood eye diseases could be hiding in plain sight

hen Megan Webber downloaded family photos off her digital camera, she found the usual problems that need touching up — some were too dark, some were a little grainy, and some needed a little red-eye removal. Some of the pictures of her 5-year-old son, Benjamin, had a golden glow in his left eye. “Benjamin has always had a freckle in his left eye,” said Megan, “so I thought the flash was just a difference due to the coloring of his eye and ignored it — I even did red-eye correction to remove it from photos.” But when her sister noticed that same glow in some family vacation pictures she had taken, she gave Megan a concerned call. “She said it was probably nothing. But she had seen on a television show that this could be a sign of a tumor in the eye and recommended I have him seen,” said Megan. Benjamin’s pediatrician didn’t find anything, but he sent them to a specialist who

urged them to come in right away. They were stunned to learn he was legally blind in his left eye. “He’d never bumped into walls or rubbed his eyes — he’d even just passed the paddle eye test in the doctor’s office,” said Megan. “His left eye could not see a letter E the size of a full computer screen eight feet away.” Scans of his eye showed a white mass, which had been causing the reflection in the photograph. After testing and a tense few days, they discovered that Benjamin had Coats’ Disease, a life-long disease that continued on page 21

can damage the eye to the point where eye removal is necessary. Fortunately, Benjamin’s problem was caught early enough for treatment. “While Benjamin has had three eye surgeries, we were very lucky to have caught his disease in time,” said Megan. “Had it been more advanced Ben could have immediately lost his eye. We are so grateful to Dr. Tom Lee and the doctors at The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Without the work that they do so many families would not have access to the quality and caliber of care that is provided there.” Benjamin is doing well, and is a happy, thriving first-grader. “He wears protective Nike shatterproof glasses which the other kids think are pretty cool,” said Megan. “The glasses are primarily to keep his unaffected eye safe, for without that eye he would be blind.” A vision to help other children Megan said that she doesn’t want any more parents to miss the signs of potentially lifethreatening eye diseases. “We are amazed that something so simple, just the glow in a photo, was all that was needed to spot this disease,” she said. “If there is a way through our family’s experi-

ence we are able to get the message out about the glow, we are anxious to do so. We’ve created a campaign to raise awareness.” The Know the Glow campaign is combining the efforts of concerned individuals, corporations and physicians who are pioneers in the field of pediatric diseases of the eye. “I can’t tell you how many kids come in with advanced eye diseases; it’s a tragedy,” said Dr. Tom Lee, director of the Retina Institute in The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “Parents don’t realize they are an important part of the diagnosis. They will see this sign before doctors will. Every child has had this screening process — all it takes is for parents to open up the photo album.” The website, www.KnowTheGlow.org, has information on the diseases that can be indicated by the glow. “Had I known about the glow earlier, Dr. Lee could have saved more of Ben’s vision,” said Megan. “Knowing what it felt like to possibly face a fatal outcome and knowing that I ignored such a huge red flag that was right there in front of me, I don’t want another parent to have to suffer through that or another child to needlessly lose their sight or their eyes due to a lack of awareness of the glow!”

If you believe you have seen a glow, you should obtain a referral immediately to a pediatric ophthalmologist for diagnosis and treatment.

Retinoblastoma

(reh-tin-oh-blast-oma) is a malignant cancer of early childhood that arises from immature retinal cells in one or both eyes. Retinoblastoma can start growing at any time before birth up until about 3 years of age. Occasionally, it is not detected until ages 7 or 8.

Coats’ Disease

Coats’ disease is a rare eye disorder involving abnormal development of the blood vessels of the retina, which line the interior chamber of the eye. As various components of blood leak into the retina, fluid accumulates under the retina. The result may be loss of vision, particularly central vision, and detachment of the retina from other layers of the eye.

hen most people envision a bow hunter, the image of a man in camouflage, face paint, a deer call and a bow and knife may come to mind. Mary Roberts, 34, of Guthrie, Oklahoma shatters that image. Mary stands decked out in her own brand of women’s camouflage that is far from the norm. Her colors include pink, purple and shades of blue. Her custom-made compound bow is pink and she also carries a matching hunting knife. Mary took up hunting 11 years ago. “I have always gone to deer camp with my husband Aaron and the kids, but I had to stay in camp because the kids were too young to go on the hunt,” Mary said. Once the kids were old enough to know how to sit and be quiet in the deer stand, Mary took her rightful place. It has been eight years since Mary bagged her first deer. “I am not a trophy hunter, we eat what we harvest,” Mary said. “We usually get four deer

during a season for our freezer and we also donate a deer to a family who has nine children.” Mary said her family does not eat beef. Their harvests include deer, wild turkey, wild hog, dove, duck, alligator gar, alligator and bear. “We have our meats processed by a butcher and it’s great, there are no additives or preservatives in our meats and I feel good about feeding my family this way,” Mary said. Mary was told about competition archery, called 3-D archery, about 8 years ago while at a hunter’s checkpoint station. She and her son Mackenzie were disappointed because hunting season was coming to a close, and they were going to have to wait for the next hunting season to come around before they could pick up their bows again. After checking out several websites on the subject, the Roberts’ found www.myarcheryclub.com and discovered 3-D archery competitions in their area. The 3-D Archery competitions have now become a family affair, Mary, her husband Aaron, and their son Mackenzie all compete in their individual divisions.

Mary has had great results in her competitions. She usually finishes in the top five in each competition. She was the 2011 runnerup in the state Archery Shooters Association Competition, finished first in the 2011 Sooner State Games held this last winter and took first in the 2010 summer Sooner State Games. This year at the National ASA Competition,

parel, an online business that is growing. Soon her products will be available in retail stores Las Vegas, NV as well as retail locations here in Oklahoma. Trophy Chick Apparel opened for business in December of last year and has taken off. Her product line includes women’s clothes, deer calls and jewelry. To learn more about Trophy Chick Apparel visit www.trophychickapparel.com or her Facebook Store. Mary now divides her time among the two businesses and competition archery events. These days running a successful business is challenging. Finding the time to balance her business schedule with her personal schedule which includes keeping up with three kids that range in age from 2 to 18, and workout time is always a challenge. Mary maintains her figure through a variety of workouts that includes a daily punishment of 150 crunches. She works out 4 to 5 days a week in sessions that last an hour and a half. Her workout routine changes from week to week because she uses a variety of programs from the satellite channel Fit TV.

When Mary first started hunting, there was not a line of hunting apparel for women. She was forced to wear kids camouflage or the small sizes in men’s camouflage, the problem was that neither fit properly. Healing Begins in the Mind A Creative Visualization Exercise

THINK OF IT Find a peaceful, quiet place and get comfortable with a pen and paper. Now think of the things you will no longer tolerate. Think of the things that trouble you the most By Dr. Steve Johnston and write them down. Next, think of how you would be if you eliminated the things that prevent you from achieving healing and lasting health. PICTURE IT Now that your problems have been identified, picture how you will eliminate them then eliminate each problem from your life. Once you have accomplished this, feel the success of your actions. Now, within this same exercise, picture what you want to become. In this step you can be as elaborate as you want. Mentally draw the most beautiful and healthy picture of you. Stamp, stain, and engrave that image on your mind. Your mind is the most important tool you have. Feel yourself becoming obsessed with your new image and feel the

excitement building inside you. At this point, you now know that you will succeed. BELIEVE IN IT This step is so important. Believing in yourself and what you are accomplishing gives to you, the wonderful, vibrant and healthy you that you have mentally created. With this act alone, your inner self has guaranteed your success. Now become your dream. DO IT! Take the mental picture you have created of yourself and visualize that you are getting there. Visualize the excitement of your changing. Visualize your body molding into an illness free, vibrant, healthy body. Picture yourself progressing through the steps. It is through your efforts both mentally and physically, that you will achieve your goals. BECOME IT This is the fun part of creative visualization. Now see yourself living as the person that you have created. Get comfortable, visualize

yourself waking up. Yawn and stretch, feel the new energy flowing through you. With such energy, you jump up out of bed and with excitement and anticipation you run to the mirror. It’s the new you without aches and pains, lumps or bruises and or illness. Now visually begin your day. First pamper yourself. Touch your body and feel health surging through your veins. Mentally feel your own skin. “Yes, this is me” you say to yourself. Experience the warm, exciting, healthy you. Appreciate yourself; you have worked hard to achieve this miracle. Now look down, you see all the pills you have been taking. See yourself throwing them away. Begin your day, live this day as you would in reality. Enjoy it, for the reality of your vision is not far away. The new you is coming. You have finished your visualization. Live in reality what you have envisioned. Work toward your goals one step at a time. Have full faith in yourself, and remember simple steps will bring you amazing results. Yours in Health, Dr. Steve
