Learn about your city on the seat of a bicycle. There are few ways to get closer to a city than with a bike ride. For over four years, Ride OKC has illuminated a different, deeper side of the metro through their tours. Focusing on history, architecture, and local businesses, Ride OKC is committed to providing a communal experience rather than the rigid, congested tours that are commonplace. Founded by Ryan and Ashely Fogle, the couple were inspired by a bike tour they happened upon in Vancouver while they were dating. “I’ve been an avid cyclist before then, but I had never heard of a bike tour at the time,” said Ryan. “We rode with a local, knowledgeable guide that showed us a lot of cool stuff we didn’t find in the travel books we researched.” Additionally, Ryan and Ashley were taken aback by the social nature of the tour, as they quickly made friends with several of the other riders.
When they returned to Oklahoma, the experience stuck at the back of Ryan’s mind. An architect, Ryan was designing the south endzone of OU’s football stadium when he was by the Museum of Art to lead a bike tour over downtown’s architecture. Expecting attendance to be overwhelming, Ryan was taken aback as nearly a hundred people arrived readyto-ride on a Saturday morning. Shortly thereafter, he led several other non-profits to inquire about tours. The local desire for such an experience was clear. After completing his work at Owen Field, Ryan converted his bonus into the foundation for Ride OKC. Today, they operate with a fleet of twenty bikes and multiple guides. They offer private tours that require a minimum of three riders, as well as a regular cycle of brewery and architecture tours. Special editions outings, like the Halloween tour led by local author and supernatural historian Jeff Provine, have become annual traditions. Due to the pandemic, many of the larger rides have been modified. “With COVID, we’ve reduced our normal tours from 15 riders to 10. We’ve also heightened our cleaning standards, and the rentals we offer are now made through contactless delivery. Since we’re primarily outdoors, we don’t require face
masks while riding, but they are necessary for our more immersive tours.” Said Ryan. There are several options available to those seeking to participate. Ride OKC allows participants to bring their own bike for a 20% discount off of their tour. For their rentals, Ryan and Ashley went through several prototype fleets before settling on the Priority Classic Plus from designer Dave Weiner. Lightweight, versatile, and innovative in its use of a belt system over a chain, Ryan found the model emphasizes comfort and safety. Ride OKC also offers smaller versions of their bikes for children under 10-yearsold. They also have wagons available for up to two children, and a co-pilot that converts the standard rentals into an optional, tandem bicycle. Each tour is approximately 10 miles and lasts from two to three hours. Despite the length, frequent stops and a casual pace makes Ride OKC an accessible option for anyone who is curious. Their guides are meticulous in charting their routes, avoiding any areas with steep hills and hazardous streetcar tracks. “Ride OKC makes you feel like a kid again. Most of the people that ride with us haven’t ridden a bike since they were young. Once you get that exhilaration of riding, it opens you up to see things in a different way, regardless of whether you’re a tourist or a local.” Said Ryan. Ryan found most tours tend to focus on the big at-
tractions, as if the only thing worth seeing and learning about is what would be printed on a postcard. Ride OKC isn’t focused on just learning about the city, but being a part of it. Riders are not so much encouraged to go off-track as they are to engage in a conversation and to let their mind wander. “Seeing the city through the eyes of a local is pretty hard to do sometimes unless you read a lot. Ride OKC is a good way for locals to reconnect with the city because there’s always something new to see. We’re everchanging.” Said Ryan. Just as the city has grown, so to have the aspiration of Ride OKC. Ryan has wrestled with the idea of converting the trailer into something more stationary, like a coffee shop, bar, or even a hostel similar to bike tours outside of the U.S. Additionally, Ryan feels there’s potential for bike tours while outside of OKC. Cities like Norman and Guthrie offer a rich history that seems to have only been tapped by those closest to them. However, there is still a vast amount of culture in the metro itself that is unfortunately barred from safely touring by bike. Part of Ride OKC’s mission lies in advocacy. Ryan finds much of the city’s east and south sides are filled with local businesses and historically significant, but a lack of bike lanes makes it difficult for his team to plan tours in the areas. Thus, Ride OKC have become advocates for developing safe, new structures for bike riders and pedestrians. Ryan feels with a little bit of awareness and a presence at city council meetings, they will inevitably evoke change. “I think every city has stories to tell, and we have a pretty good model to help tell them.” Ryan said.

Kayak and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) season is upon us at RIVERSPORT’s lakeside locations. A bit calmer than their surfing counterparts, the Flat Tide outings offer one of the best ways to experience the city’s lake. RIVERSPORT offers lessons and programs for paddlers of all levels at each of their locations. SUP is a full-body workout appropriate for children, adults, and canines alike. Children over the ages of eight can ride independently, whereas children over the age of five must paddle on the same board as an adult. While personal flotation devices are provided, dog owners must provide their own for their pets.

The most socially-distanced form of yoga doesn’t require a mat (or solid ground) at all. Instructor Jeanna Price pushes the boundaries of what’s possible on a SUP with her hour-long classes. The lack of stability on a paddleboard forces more of a core workout that can challenge even the most advanced yogis. Calming music is replaced with the ambiance of the lake, and each breath comes with some of the freshest air the state has to offer. Participants are encouraged to contact SUP Oklahoma to book a class. Classes are $10.00 if you bring your own paddleboard, and $30.00 if a rental is needed.

chickenfriedNEWS BICE VS NEESE
COVERT COVID After Dr. Deborah Birx visited Oklahoma last month, Gov. Kevin Stitt said she made no specific recommendations for the Sooner State. But thanks to reports obtained and leaked from The Center for Public Integrity, we know that he was either lying or he cannot read and, let’s be honest, both are equally likely. Stitt, who is nothing if not a good German for the Donald Trump regime, has dutifully done the bidding of the president, so it’s no surprise that he hid the fact that as many as eight cities and 22 counties were included in the Coronavirus Task Force’s “red zones” through the month of August. The city and county of Tulsa were included in all four reports last month, in which Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County were also listed in the “yellow zones.” Caught in his bald-faced lie or his act of supreme ignorance, Stitt pledged that he would be releasing the reports, but has acted on none of their recommendations, including a statewide mask mandate and clos-

ing down bars as well as restricting restaurants in hot spots. Just like the rest of his governance, Stitt boldly ignores anything that doesn’t affect him directly, even if it means screwing over the place that made him his millions. As the number of COVID-19 infections surpasses the population of Moore, it’s only a matter of time before he makes the list of the 15 shadiest governors in addition to being a crooked lender of private loans. Thank God for “fake news,” or we would solely be at the mercy of fake governors.

With less than two months’ time before the November elections, some of the best summer viewing came in the form of utterly absurd campaign ads between state Sen. Stephanie Bice (R-Oklahoma City) and Terry Neese. Neese’s ads, in which she reportedly outspent Bice by more than $1 million, included hilarious red/blue glasses and blouses quick cuts and, inexplicably, a disembodied hand pulling a revolver from a vehicle’s glove box with the words “there isn’t anybody that can stop us” spoken over the image. Saving the best for last, Neese closed the ad of herself with a shot of herself wearing a Trump “Keep America Great” hat. In what can only hopefully be a portent of things to come, Neese fell flat on her face, losing by more than 5 points to Bice, twangy guitar be damned. But wait, there’s more! In August, the Congressional Leadership Fund launched its attack ads against Rep. Kendra Horn (D-Oklahoma City), comparing her political career to
… cheesy lip balm and blue ketchup? Horn was also billed as a member of Pelosi and Her Socialist Squad, who will be releasing their debut album this year as well as taking a whopping $500,000 from special interest groups (but pay no attention to the $2.5 million the dark money conservative PAC spent on attacking Democratic House incumbents in seven states). No matter who loses this fall, it is apparent that the real winner is the advertising and marketing company responsible for these ad campaigns. They’ll surely be laughing all the way to the ballot box.

Forget pumpkin spice. It’s Oktoberfest season, and Oklahoma’s craft brewers have stepped up to the plate with their rendition of the seasonal lager. The Märzen, or March beer, is known for being malty and rich. The remaining bottles were traditionally served during Oktoberfest in Bavaria, which begins mid-September.
Stonecloud Festival Pants / Country Slammer
USA Today listed Stonecloud as their #6 finalists in the top ten new breweries of 2019, but that’s not a secret for any beer drinkers here. Their Festival Pants, a 5.6 percent festbier, is malty but gulpable and definitely on par with their other offerings. The Country Slammer also gets an honorable mention, even though it’s a Viennese country beer and not technically a märzen or festbier, because of the overall flavor. Reportedly brewed from a recipe culled from an old book, this one definitely has the hoppier flavor of the Viennese malts but goes down smooth like a festbier. The Country Slammer also comes in a four-pack, but at 5.6 percent, they too will be gone by morning.
Anthem Oktoberfest
For hopheads who cannot imagine a beer without some of the bitter flower aftertaste, Anthem’s Oktoberfest is right for you. Even though the IBUs listed on the can are only 20, which is pretty standard for a märzen, there’s a taste of bitterness in the finish. The 5.5 percent alcohol content is also on par for an Oktoberfest beer rather than a hopped beer, though it may be the Viennese malts that are providing the bitter twist.

Cabin Boys Oktoberfest
The only Tulsa beer to make Oklahoma Gazette’s fall beer list in 2020, Cabin Boys have been making a splash as a new small brewery and it’s easy to taste why. Though billed on the can as a “festbier-style lager,” it has the same flavor and finish reminiscent of a märzen (and only true beer snobs would know the difference anyway). With a 6 percent ABV, this one comes in a four-pack, but I wouldn’t expect any to remain the next day.
Twisted Spike
Oktoberfest
Twisted Spike’s Oktoberfest offering is definitely on the sweeter, maltier side of this year’s autumnal offerings, but that’s not a complaint. For those who prefer the heavier flavor in their autumnal beer, this one delivers. Even though the IBUs register at 30 for this brew, the malted flavor tamps down the Bavarian hops. At 5.8 percent, the weight of this beer’s flavor will stop you before the alcohol content does.
Angry Scotsman Save the Date
For Scots, they sure do German beers well. The Pilsner malt in this one hits first, but the Munich malt is quick to follow. Breadier than it is hoppy, it is still a bit on the dry side with a tinge of hops. This one is also richer than some, but goes down smooth and has a higher-than-average ABV (6.1 percent) for how malty it actually is. Also, a little harder to session unless you’re an Oktoberfest trooper (which I am).
Coop
OKtoberfest Coop has been brewing its OKtoberfest for years now, and it’s a personal fall standard. While the malt and yeast definitely shine through, it’s easily the most sessionable beer of the lot, and, with an alcohol by volume content of 5.6 percent, it’s easy to get through a six-pack and not regret it in the morning. Though the company’s full name is Coop Ale Works, they produce a mighty fine lager each autumn.

The push for legal adult, or recreational, cannabis usage that came swiftly on the heels of Oklahoma’s medical cannabis program has been hotly debated among both industry insiders and patients, but no one has done more to apply the brakes to the potential ballot initiatives than Paul Tay. And he managed to do it from within the confines of the Tulsa County jail. Tay, a perennial candidate for Tulsa city offices and convicted misdemeanant, has long been an advocate for cannabis legalization and criminal justice reform. Tay brought a challenge against State Question 807 while serving a 9-month sentence in the Tulsa County jail after being convicted by a jury of outraging public decency. The charge resulted from Tay wearing a bicycle helmet with a sex toy attached and carrying a handwritten sign with a profane message. Tay delivered his arguments to an Oklahoma Supreme Court referee via teleconference from the jail last winter. The justices ultimately struck down his challenge, but COVID-19 had already vastly diminished the likelihood of a successful petition drive. The proponents of SQ807 requested a delay in the signature-gathering period but the state’s high court also struck that down.
There is no ongoing signature drive and the window closes next month. Tay said he initially thought nothing of SQ807, but when more participants in the state’s medical cannabis industry started coming out in opposition to it, he chose to challenge it before his trial but did not formally do so until after the jury sent him to jail. “I, myself, took the time to read it line by line and decided that I need to do something about it, so I checked into the whole Supreme Court challenge. I was down that road. I started doing legal research on how to pull this thing off. On the day that I went to trial for the outraging public decency charge, I was in their law library during the jury deliberations to type this out in case I get sent into the pokey,” Tay said. And into the pokey he went, submitting handwritten challenges from inside the jail. At the same time, he wrote letters to Oklahoma Gazette, completely oblivious to the ongoing coverage, he said. Portions of them were previously published in The High Culture. “Tulsa World shut me down. Tulsa media has pretty much shut me down because they know my [modus operandi]. They know I’m just a publicity hound for my campaigns and I figured, well, the Gazette is an independent deal

out of Oklahoma City. It’s not The Oklahoman. It’s not, you know, one of the Gaylord papers … I sent it off thinking, ‘Independent paper. They’ll read it and maybe they’ll print it,’” Tay said. While behind bars, Tay also challenged State Question 813, a lengthy proposed constitutional amendment that would legalize cannabis without a license for adults. Tay again delivered his arguments remotely but was sprung from lockup after serving five months because he had acted as a trustee while jailed. The hearing was held July 21. The Oklahoma Supreme Court has not issued its opinion. Tay is now busy gathering signatures for State Question 812’s ballot initiative. While written by the same group of people as SQ813, it is a brief constitutional amendment aimed at criminal justice reform. Tay said he and organizers have “agreed to disagree” on how best to enact legal access to cannabis, but both agree on decriminalization. “I understand where they’re coming from. They’re business people, and when you run a small business, you want certainty in the marketplace, and the reason why they wanted [SQ]813 as a constitutional amendment is they want certainty in the marketplace. They are basically writing a house bill into a constitutional amendment,” Tay said. Tay said his arguments were very similar against SQ813 as they were for SQ807. He argues that both violate the supremacy clause of the U. S. Constitution and the Controlled Substances Act as well as the singlesubject rule for Oklahoma ballot initiative petitions. Politically, Tay is all over the place, he admits. His runs for Tulsa mayor and city council have been to address issues of injustice he sees within the system. He does not cleave to any party lines and the one election cycle he sat out in the last two decades was because
he supported another candidate. “I want to solve problems that affect people’s lives, you know? I want to be in the game. When the saints come marching in and all that kind of stuff, I want to be marching too. I want to be marching right there with folks who believe black lives matter. I want to be right there with folks who want to paint ‘blue lives matter’ on the city streets. I’ve got a case in the Supreme Court right now to block the removal of the Black Lives Matter mural on Tulsa streets right now. I want to be marching with folks from the right and the left,” Tay said. Incidentally, Tay also penned and filed his own ballot initiative petition, State Question 808. It went unchallenged and the signature-gathering period elapsed while Tay was jailed. No one attempted to gather signatures for it. After doing his homework for his challenges, Tay realized that he was guilty of the same thing he had accused other petition writers of doing. “It should have just been one sentence: ‘The right of all persons to partake in cannabis shall not be infringed.’ That should have been it. And I put in all different kinds of stuff, and it would have totally violated the single subject rule. Why didn’t anybody bother to challenge it? Because obviously, they didn’t take me seriously. And that’s okay. That’s fine. I get that. At that time. But I feel like things have changed completely at this point,” Tay said.
