“Old Florida” Recreation
While in Okeechobee you definitely get that “old Florida” feeling and to experience it you need not look any further than just two miles east of the city. Situated on 7.5 acres of beautiful oak and cabbage hammocks is a horse farm open to the public. There you will find an array of animals you can interact with. You can pet and feed rabbits, chickens, turkeys, goats, calves and horses. The farm offers trail rides, pony rides and riding lessons. Cattle is a vital industry in Okeechobee where you’ll find Florida’s largest livestock market for both beef and dairy cattle. The Okeechobee Livestock Market is definitely a place worth checking out while visiting Okeechobee. The largest of the market’s sales begin in July and last through February. Sale days are Monday and Tuesday at noon. The Okeechobee Livestock Market also has a restaurant where you can get a good, country meal.

Where there’s cattle, there’s rodeos. Okeechobee hosts many rodeos during the year including rodeos put on by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Okeechobee Cattlemen’s Association who produces the CowTown Rodeo. During rodeos cowboys and cowgirls compete in events such as bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing.
