FINANCIAL, RETIREMENT & ESTATE PLANNING Advanced Estate Planning Explore some of the more complex planning options that are available to you. This course will illustrate what problems can arise when estates are poorly planned, including a failure to properly establish mental capacity and the new onus of proof with regard to undue influence. We will then look at planning options to minimize probate fees and taxes payable by your estate, planning options for beneficiaries with disabilities, substance abuse issues and spendthrift problems. Basic Estate Planning Learn about the documents that are needed for a basic estate plan. Estate planning topics will include: the purpose of a will, alternatives to a will, the probate process, the tax consequences of dying, important provisions that should be in your will and some general information about avoiding disputes after your death. Incapacity planning topics will include the nature and purpose of a Power of Attorney vs. a Health Care Representation Agreement, the main uses (and abuses) of these documents and some tips on drafting. Planning for Incapacity – Financial & Health Care Decisions Learn about the documents that are needed for basic incapacity planning. We will discuss how incapacity documents differ from wills, the nature and purpose of Health Care Representation Agreements, Advanced Directives and Powers of Attorney, how these documents work together, when they become effective, the main uses (and abuses) of each as well as how to choose the right representatives and some tips on drafting. We will also discuss the legal process of Medical Assistance in Dying. Automaticity and Addiction Is addiction a choice? If so, why is it often so irrational and selfdestructive? Recent approaches to drug and alcohol addiction explain addictive behaviour as the result of automatic and often unconscious thoughts, feelings and actions. Understanding how automaticity works explains some of the perplexing aspects of addiction and leads to new ideas in treatment and prevention. This topic is taught by Dr. Marvin Krank, Psychology Professor at UBC, who specializes in cognitive processes and substance abuse in youth.
