ADAM LIPPES X OKA

Fashion designer and friend of OKA Adam Lippes returns for a second collaborative collection that draws on his love of pattern and colour

When Adam Lippes is asked about the design similarities he shares with our Co-Founder and Creative Director Sue Jones, he responds that it would perhaps be simpler to list the differences instead, so entwined are their creative visions. Though his core focus is creating exquisite clothing for his eponymous womenswear brand, the designer has a soft spot for interiors, where he favours a colourful, patternfilled and classically English aesthetic.

“Sue and I speak the same language; it’s comfort, style and quality competing in a way that works,” Adam says of their shared design sensibilities.

These characteristics certainly came to the fore when the pair collaborated on their first limited edition collection in 2020, a range of tableware inspired by antique Famille Rose china.

Their latest meeting of minds sees them move from the dining room to the study with a collection of furniture and accessories designed to elevate the working-fromhome experience. “Not everybody has their own office at home, so we wanted to create a collection that would look good in any type of room, be it a bedroom, sitting room or a smaller space,” explains Sue.

Adam’s vintage fabric, meanwhile, experienced a renaissance in the form of the Magistry Stool, which boasts a botanical-inspired print wrapped around an hourglass silhouette. It’s finished with a contrasting edge and cord in the same forest green that features in the Avery Range. Accessories complete the collection, from the brass Avery Table Lamp to the Magistry Cushion Cover and Everett Box Files and Trays in red, green and blue ticking stripes. With each piece intended to harmonise together and yet sing beautifully on its own, the range perfectly marries its designers' love of mixing and matching.

“It’s always a great pleasure to work with Adam; any excuse and I’ll take it,” says Sue of the collaboration.

“IT’S COMFORT, STYLE AND QUALITY COMPETING IN A WAY THAT WORKS”

“His inspiration very much comes from the antique aesthetic but, like me, he likes to bring that into the 21st century. We think the same way – to make people feel comfortable and pleased about their surroundings is his ethos, and that’s very much mine too.”

Taking cues from a swatch of vintage fabric that Lippes uncovered at a French market, the pair used an intricate pattern – featuring botanical and bird motifs – as a basis for the collection. A core palette of green, red and blue was decided upon, drawing the pieces together further.

Fine craftsmanship was at the heart of the collection; the designers worked closely with artisans to produce pieces with an emphasis on quality and longevity.

While Adam and Sue's aesthetic typically leans towards the more traditional, for the Avery Range they looked to clean, modern designs. The Desk, Desk Chair and Set of Three Nesting Tables each have a simple-yet-striking silhouette. Paired with luxurious leather, lacquer and bamboo detailing, the pieces perfectly bridge the gap between the classic and the contemporary.

THE GREAT INDOORS

For this Grade II listed cottage in Guildford, the team behind our Interior Design Service used natural motifs, tactile textures and a calming colour palette to root the house in the surrounding countryside

When embarking on a renovation, it’s anyone’s guess what may be uncovered along the way. A leaking roof, rotting floorboards, dodgy electrics – the potential pitfalls are endless. But for Kate and David, whose Grade II listed cottage in Guildford spans five centuries, the surprises were altogether more delightful. Hidden underneath the tongue-andgroove boarding, which was installed throughout the property in the late 1800s, the couple discovered beautiful wooden beams, perfectly preserved. They’re just a few of a number of historical features within the home, which the couple carefully restored and enhanced during their renovation, while simultaneously creating a space suited for modern family life. “We wanted something that had character and history, but we also wanted to create something very contemporary,” David explains.

When it came to the interior design, the couple knew how they wanted the space to look but were unsure how to achieve it – finding the perfect balance between old and new, while incorporating their existing furniture pieces, seemed a challenge. With our Interior Design Service coming highly recommended by their daughter, the pair arranged a consultation at our Guildford store, where they met with one of our experts, Charlotte Saunders. “I had an idea of how I wanted the house to look and feel, but I’m not very good at choosing specific pieces,” Kate says, “and one of the first things that attracted me to OKA was how the brand styles things.”

Following the initial consultation, the couple invited Charlotte to their home to discover the space and get a feel for their vision – a cosy and inviting cottage befitting both the historical features and the modern extension in the kitchen/ dining room. “I explained what I wanted, and Charlotte got it right away,” says Kate. “We were very lucky to have her; we wanted somebody who’s good with fabrics and textures, and one of the goals was for everything to look

Upon entering the home, you’re immediately welcomed by the inviting sitting room, where plump seating, natural textures and a warm colour palette of blue and pink greet you like a hug. The theme continues in the kitchen, where the same blues are this time paired with sunny yellows to emphasise the brighter and more modern space. Clean silhouettes nod to the contemporary elements of the property, while more traditional patterns enhance the historical features.

Throughout the home, from the study and TV room to the bedrooms upstairs, natural textures play a central role, with wood, linen and rattan rooting the house in the beautiful country outside. By weaving common threads throughout the space, Charlotte ensured each room feels perfectly in tune with the next, and yet somehow utterly individual.

“I wanted to make the home feel really welcoming, and having different colours as you go through the house really makes it come alive,” Charlotte explains of her process. “I knew they loved pattern and wanted to include some bespoke pieces to make the space feel really unique to them.”

Using our made-to-order Tailored by OKA service, the couple were able to put their own stamp on the space by customising their perfect seating and selecting the upholstery for each design. As our team works with a vast array of fabric houses, one of the benefits of using our Interior Design Service is being able to select any material you’d like for our Tailored by OKA designs. In the cottage’s kitchen, you’ll find our made-to-order Stafford Dining Chair and Beale Loveseat upholstered in Kate and David’s choice of Linwood’s Juno Linen, in the shades Mouse, Sea Salt and Hazelwood. In the sitting room, two Highmore Armchairs are reimagined in Lewis & Wood’s Tribal print in Monsoon Blue, and in the master bedroom our Fanshawe Footstool gives Colefax & Fowler’s Woodfern a moment in the spotlight.

“The ability to use different upholstery fabrics made the whole design bespoke to us,” says Kate. “I didn’t know that OKA offered that service, and it can really make everybody’s house more individual.”

In addition to furniture upholstery, our Interior Design Service can support with paint colours, curtains, blinds, trims and piping. For the cottage’s five bedrooms, Charlotte designed bespoke headboards in different shapes and upholstered them in fabrics of Kate and David’s choice, while custom blinds and curtains in each of the rooms helped pull the look together. “It’s such an added bonus to have that as part of the service, because it means they still have the OKA style,” says Kate. “They have made the home perfect.”

As well as ensuring the space had the look and feel Kate and David desired, Charlotte was careful to meet their practical requirements too. With young grandchildren and pets, the couple wanted to avoid any sharp corners, glass, loose fabrics and trims. Happily, the space is working perfectly for them, and they’ve already enjoyed hosting family and friends in their newly designed home.

“Everything that has been put in the house works – everything,” says Kate. “It looks beautiful and it’s practical as well. We love it – what more can I say?”

The collection, which features sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, benches, bar stools and footstools, offers 10 different styles that bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary. We know that homes are personal and unique, so every season we look to expand our customisable offering to provide you with as many options as possible for creating your very own designs, and this is no different.

This spring, you can enjoy updated takes on three of our original styles; the modern, clean-cut Beale and charming, comfortable Radcliffe can now be arranged as modular sofas, while the elegant Egerton Range has expanded to include a sofa bed design. Modular sofas enable you to fit your sofa perfectly into your chosen room, whether it be a higgledy-piggledy characterful country house, or a clean-lined modern apartment. Consisting of Right-Arm, Left-Arm, Corner and Armless Units, these elements can be placed together to form a sofa as long – or as short – as you please, and can even turn corners. So, you really are in the creative driving seat.

The idea behind our first sofa bed was to adapt a functional piece – often lacking in aesthetic appeal, and hidden in a spare room – into one you'd be proud to put on display in your main living area. Our Egerton’s sloping arms and sumptuous seat cushions seemed the perfect choice to transform into a place of slumber. It goes without saying that our new designs, just like our originals, are available in a choice of fabrics and colours too – our collection spans natural Belgian linens, velvet, leather, wool and linen-wool blends. We also offer 'clever' alternatives to velvet and linen. These have been designed to be stain- and water-resistant, while still offering the look and feel of the originals – meaning they are perfect for homes with young children or pets.
