In this first autumn issue, we share with you our new furniture and accessories. This issue is all about the new. DESIGN

The Power of a Reboot Stephen Bayley is the person for whom the term “design guru” was coined, he is an author, critic, columnist, consultant, broadcaster, debater and curator.

attersea? This is Turner’s and Whistler’s Thames. But it is also the Thames of The London Power Company, Metropolitan Vickers and British Thomson Houston. These resonant names were the muses of Battersea Power Station, south London’s greatest architectural landmark.

Construction of Battersea Power Station began in 1929 on a site that once belonged to the Dickensian-sounding Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Company which maintained reservoirs here. And before that, the notorious Red House Tavern where Dickens himself was a customer.

Its general arrangements of the exterior were largely the work of J.Theo Halliday working to a technical brief determined by the engineers S.L.Pearce and H.N. Allott. To these Sir Giles Gilbert Scott added his trademark architectural flourishes. And such was the dignity of public utilities in the thirties, Scott made his power-station at least as grand as his Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. And at least as memorable as his bright red ‘phone box’.

The Power Station is one of those rare buildings, like St Paul’s, that can be recognised in profile alone: an identifier of ‘London’ as a whole.

Coal-fired power was first generated in 1935, but in 1983 Battersea Power Station was decommissioned. And became for what seemed like an eternity… unusable. Listed in 1980, it became untouchable. In ever shabbier defiance, it was dire reprimand about a nation’s lost industrial past and a city’s abandoned municipal pride. Soon after its listing, Terence Conran and I considered it for our future Design Museum, but a cursory survey showed that Europe’s largest brick building needed re-pointing in its entirety.

Even in the ambitious delirium of the eighties this was unfeasible. Then began a process of Battersea attracting and rebuffing three major re-development schemes. There are even vintage Thatcher-era A-Z maps which hint that a crazily optimistic version of Alton Towers will be here. It never happened.

The only future for Battersea seemed to be either preservation as a stabilized ruin like an Art Deco Tintern Abbey. Or lift Heritagemandated development restrictions and let someone get on with improving a flooded, toxic, nasty urban wasteland. Or knock it down and create something thrillingly new.

The Power Station was an architectural corpse dominating its own graveyard.

But even in its most melancholy desuetude, it remained a touching and evocative sight.

For years, batches of photographers populated the north shore to take that picture: ghosthunters after the trail of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Batman who each exploited its image in films and album covers. They still come.

Battersea had its place in popular culture, but there was another reality to the Power Station: an expansive, dangerous eyesore which depressed the area and hobbled all attempts to save it.

But the senses of ruin and disappointment have now evaporated as fast as Whistler’s mist in strong sunlight. The section of the south Thames littoral that until very recently was home only to a malodorous recycling plant, the Dogs’ Home, a terrifying cold store and a grim concrete factory has become one of Europe’s most ambitious development areas. It is anchored to the East by a new US Embassy, adding diplomatic lustre and cosmopolitan credibility to S1. And to the West by Battersea Power station itself: an astonishing feat of architectural recycling.

Creative re-use has always been the best answer to the question of what to do with much-loved, but redundant, old buildings.

A cavernous turbine-hall has now been creatively re-used to accommodate all the activities of contemporary commerce and culture. Where turbines once hummed, media workers will enjoy a chai latte with microfoamed almond milk. Scott’s other Thamesside power station is now Tate Modern : another spectacular example of the architectural turnaround. President Trump, looking at an American Embassy he did not understand, called this an “off location”, but Apple does not agree. Soon, Battersea Power Station will house the largest Apple campus beyond the HQ in Cupertino. And that will, naturally, have a multiplier effect.

Great cities are all about layers and textures, variety and surprise. Scott’s Art Deco electric cathedral will soon be set amongst bravura new build by Norman Foster (aesthetically cool and technologically sophisticated) and Frank Gehry (expressionist and willfully sculptural). The eclecticism is as bold as the ambition.

And the best truth about great buildings and great cities is this : you don’t finish them, you start them. You can check whether this is true by asking the ghosts of Turner, Dickens and Whistler. The sense of locality they identified is being reinvented.

The map of London changes continuously. The centre moves, hotspots cool, the balance shifts.

And Battersea’s ambiguity has gone. An industrial wreck has become the new focus of a post-industrial city.

attersea Power Station was originally built in the 1930s, as a coal-fired power station on the River Thames. By 1983 it had stopped creating electricity. Since then, the building has garnered an almost celebrity status, becoming one of the most renowned landmarks in London and a Grade II listed building.

This is evident in the dining area, where our classic design was punctuated with our unique goat hair armchairs and each place setting was given a large flower head.

Don’t be afraid to stray away from traditional chairs and table decorations. Indulge in rich, vibrant fabrics and flowers. Be bold. Your dining area is a space that is created for entertaining, the entertainment should begin as soon as your guests walk into the room.

esigning a room in a small apartment in New York was a challenging but exciting project for our founder, Annabel Astor.

The clients were a young couple who work from home and they needed it to be versatile. Using our Ashmolean Bookshelves, Annabel split the living room into two distinct areas, allowing one side to work as a sitting room and the other, a dining room which doubles up as a workspace.

I wanted to show how you can use green as a neutral. It’s really such an adaptable colour, that is often overlooked.”

“Whenever I’m sleeping in a city, I always miss nature. One of the amazing things about this apartment is the magnificent views of Central Park out of the window. I wanted to bring some of that natural feel into the bedroom, so I added some stunning green pieces, such as the lamps, cushions and throw. I made sure that it did not become too overpowering by keeping the rest of the scheme quite neutral.

I’ve always loved a four-poster, there is something so luxurious about

them. I hung a fabric over the bed canopy, to make the room feel more cosy.

When we entered the bedroom the first thing we noticed was the dark floor, which just made the room feel smaller. We covered the majority of it with a faded blue rug, which added a sense of calm.

The bedroom is meant to feel light, minimalist but sophisticated and I think we’ve achieved that.”

he chalet that Sue decorated was quite traditional and she wanted to keep it that way, without over-indulging it.

“I didn’t want that ‘old ski on the wall’ look and I certainly was not going to allow a cuckoo clock to come through the doors. This is a family chalet but I wanted it to be smart, sleek and sophisticated.”

The sitting and dining area is open-plan. This chalet is such a perfect space to entertain, so Sue made sure to use a large dining table that could be described as nothing short of magnificent, with it’s sturdy structure and ornate base.

The chairs have sumptuously comfortable seats and their backs are decorated with a dream catcher-esque pattern.

“The whole home had to be comfortable and convenient. I wanted there to be a place for everything, to avoid any clutter. I placed lots of cabinets, wardrobes and cupboards, so that nothing had to be on show unless it was well and truly beautiful. One of the real tricks to having a stunning home, is to make sure you have enough storage, otherwise you will always look like you live in chaos.”

The panoramic view had to be the main feature in this space, as it is just astonishing. In the winter you have an expanse of snow and snow covered trees and in the summer you see grassy mountains and lupins sprouting from the earth.

Sue created a lot of seating in the sitting area, not only did she place the two sofas, and two armchairs but the floor cushions make great seats or footstools and even the ottoman can double up as extra seating space, if it is needed.

Sue Jones’ new cushion collection was initially inspired by scraps of old fabric that she found in street markets around the world. She wanted each cushion to look as though they had been cut from a large tapestry. The result is a combination of textures and finishes, using velvet, silk, linen, over-stitching and braids.

The majority of the collection is crafted from 100% linen, though some have a combination of linen and velvet and some are entirely made of velvet. Those with patterns are digitally printed in the UK.

William Sitwell, MasterChef critic and Editor of Waitrose Food, declares that September is the new January.

H

APPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY! No. I’ve not gone mad. It’s just that for me September is a far more natural time for renewal and change.

The holidays are over, it’s the moment for new schools and universities, and look: Mother Nature is also getting into gear. January is a time for turnips. That’s about it.

But come September and we can eat game, the bushes teem with blackberries, there are sloes and damsons.

Apples and pears need picking, as well as vegetables, like leeks and kale, there are chestnuts and cobnuts, quince and sage. Then there are restaurant openings, new bars and new books are published.

Of course, I completely understand that the established social construct dictates that January is the official New Year. And thus our lives are structured. After all national holidays unite us and we bounce between Christmas and Easter, Halloween and Bonfire Night.

It becomes socially acceptable to drink more in the runup to Christmas and then to give it all up in January.

But whilst being part of the herd is reassuring it can be equally gratifying to rebel. A wet Tuesday in April is a more original time for a long lunch than a Friday in midDecember. Take a long weekend in Venice in February and you can walk the streets and see the canals without having to feel you’re part of a long, endless queue. Keep drinking and indulging in your bad eating habits in January and instead see September as the time for renewal and change.

The weather is still decent and as it’s the new New Year why not give up some things and take up others…And don’t worry, there are no fitness videos…

Visit two new restaurants every month. There’s a food revolution going on, didn’t you know? Take a deep breath and head to Pop Brixton. You’ll be amazed at the innovation and flavour on offer. Also on my top three London list is Cora Pearl (from the Kitty Fisher’s team), Kricket in Shepherd’s Bush TV Centre and Brat by Tomos Parry in Shoreditch Cider. Find some real 100 per cent juice stuff. Majestic sells 3Cs Cider – it actually tastes of apples.

Rigatoni. Or campanelle, or cavatatelli, or conchiglie or farfalline.

Conversation will sparkle at supper time. (Order new shapes and sauces from innovative Pasta Evangelists if you’re time-poor). And while we’re at it, buy larger pieces of parmesan, or a whole wheel for god’s sake. It’s more fun and makes you look a lot more interesting...

Stock up with new fridge whites for mid-week drinking. For a great, easy-todrink chardonnay, buy Macon Uchizy from Justerini and Brooks or a dry and fresh Riesling (try Waitrose Dry German Riesling it will NEVER let you down).

Reading trashy novels. But don’t give it up if that’s all you read. You must read. So read even if you’re reading trash.

Worrying about Brexit. Does the future of our international trading links bother you?

Being with my family at home. I am lucky to have children of all ages and grandchildren too. They are my total joy.

Both – the variety of being in the city and the contrast to the peace and quiet of the English countryside is wonderful.

What do you wish you had known when you started your career?

You do everything better when you’re relaxed and not stressed. Although that’s much easier said than done.

Also, stop chasing after more. Happiness comes from accepting and being content with what you have.

What hairstyle should you never ever try?

Never say never!

Do you have a signature dinner party dish?

Not really but I am told that I make a very good dry martini. My son Jordan has two wonderful restaurants, Trullo and Padella – and I love eating there - his food is simple, Italian and delicious. I’m so proud of what he’s achieved.

What’s your favourite city in the world and why?

London is a truly wonderful city. My other favourite place is Ibiza. I have had a home there for many years and it is definitely a place I love.

Do you have a favourite room at home?

My library. I love being surrounded by books.

How do you dress a room?

Hundreds of candles.

Are there any similarities between how you would style a room or hair?
