“It was transformed from an overgrown hut into a remote sanctuary.”

If you asked Lucinda what kind of space she has always dreamed of designing, her answer would be instant: a rural hut. “I’ve always found the idea of them so charming,” she says. So, when she came across this neglected property on the edge of a loch, she couldn’t resist the opportunity. “It was completely overgrown, there was grass growing inside and the windows were broken. I couldn’t help but think that it could be completely transformed with a little bit of care. It was a very small space but it could be such a sanctuary. The perfect hideout for a weekend away.“ “The sitting room is small and compact, so I had to be really careful with how I used the space. I love the stripy sofa with tassels, it just adds such fun. Storage was a problem in the hut, so I used side tables that had drawers and a large ottoman as a coffee table. I stuck with a blue and red color scheme throughout, as it makes the place look more sophisticated and together.”

The Lady and The Stafford

W

hen our Co-Founder Lady Annabel Astor couldn’t find the perfect dining chair for her English country home, she took to her sketch pad.

As someone who often entertains a crowd, Annabel firmly believes that her guests’ comfort is just as important as the food and wine served. “A dining chair should not only be incredibly stylish, but comfortable enough so that people can enjoy the atmosphere and conversation, without wanting to rush to leave the table,” she says.

So, when Annabel couldn’t find an upholstered dining chair that checked all the boxes, she designed one herself and the Stafford was born. What makes this chair so unique is that while it boasts a slim silhouette (allowing you to fit more around the table), it’s still incredibly comfortable - enough so that it could even double as a desk chair.

Complete with oak legs, an intricate border of brass-colored studs and a back pull, the Stafford looks attractive from every angle. “The back of a chair is often overlooked, but it should be well designed because it’s what you see first,” says Annabel.

“I wanted to move away from a solely neutral color palette, but the space still needed to feel calm.”

When Annabel set about designing this space in her rural English home, it was essential to achieve a tranquil look, but one that didn’t play by the rules. “I always feel so at peace when out walking in the countryside, so I wanted to bring an element of this inside by introducing more natural materials and textures,” Annabel says.

She used plenty of rattan, rustic woods and soft-toned upholstery to create a relaxed aesthetic in the dining room; this light color scheme allowed her to incorporate plenty of vibrant patterns and tones when it came to the décor.

“I love green and I wanted to do something a little different, so I thought, why just stick to one shade when there are so many beautiful options?”explains Annabel.

Creating a cohesive look was especially important to Annabel. ”I wanted each room to be unique, but very much part of a whole concept, so I specifically included wood and rattan in several rooms. In the bedroom, the headboard, the top of the chests of drawers and the back and sides of the chair are all rattan. It’s such a beautiful

material that adds a lovely textured element,” she says.

The bedroom in particular had to feel very inviting, which Annabel achieved with warm oranges and browns, luxurious velvet cushions and dashes of gold. With matching chests and lamps, the room is near perfectly balanced too, which enhances the serene atmosphere.

If you have wound your way through the maze-like cobbled streets of the ancient Spanish city of Toledo, to the top of the tallest hill, you might have unknowingly passed this apartment. Sprawling across the top floor of a medieval building, it is an oasis that offers breezy respite from the Mediterranean heat.

When decorating the space, it was important to embrace the grand architecture of the property. Cool stone floors, high ceilings and large windows create an airy feel that lends itself perfectly to the climate, and the ornate carved doors are striking features all by themselves.

The apartment is a testament to the fact that classic and modern design can live in perfect harmony: the overall look is one of cohesion with clever use of color.

Everything is perfectly matched: the chairs and textiles take their cues from the bold terracotta walls, an opulent element was introduced with golden décor and detailing, and the dining table is the exact same shade as the original dark wood paneling.

Eschewing the traditional log cabin style, the interior of this modern retreat in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is slightly off-piste. Gone is the plaid, cowhide and brown leather, replaced by rich textures and dark accessories that work together to deliver a contemporary update. As a nod to the setting, we kept the paneled walls but chose wood with a smooth finish to give the lodge a more refined edge.

Natural materials feature heavily throughout the space to reinforce the connection to the mountain landscape, but also show how simple pieces can still have an impact.

Table Talk With Louise Roe The fashion and lifestyle writer and television host shares some of her favorite ways to create the perfect dinner party setting.

Louise’s number one rule is to iron your tablecloth. ”It’s a pain yes, but I promise it’s worth the hassle - having no creases and a smooth tabletop as your canvas makes a big difference,” she tells us.

When it comes to the centerpiece, thinking outside the box is important. “Scour your local farmers’ market for seasonal produce, and experiment with sliced pomegranates, grapefruits and figsw - you can even use ferns and branches collected from the woods,” Louise insists. Although Louise advises deciding on a theme for your table, she says you shouldn’t feel that you have to stick to any rules: anything and everything can make an impact. “I found wooden soldiers and other great items in the toy department,” she adds.

Don’t forget about lighting, it’s the ultimate finishing touch. “Use lots of candles at differing heights, think candelabras next to tea lights and use amber or orange bulbs in nearby lamps,” says Louise.

My Favorite Things Elizabeth Hurley is currently starring in Marvel’s Runaways. She is in her 24th year of a beauty contract with the Estée Lauder Companies, where she is also the Global Ambassador for their Breast Cancer Campaign. She owns and runs her own eponymous beachwear brand, Elizabeth Hurley Beach. Elizabeth lives in England between Herefordshire and London.

What did you aspire to be when you were a child?

A spy. I still do really.

Do you have a favorite room at home?

I converted my son’s playroom into a bar and virtually live in it. It’s a heavenly hot pink and faces east, so it’s very nice for breakfast too.

Learn what suits you, from colors to styles, and look after yourself - your health, your body, your skin and your hair. The healthier you look, the better the clothes will look.

What inspires your swimwear collection?

I’m inspired by watching women on holiday and seeing what they wear.

Many women feel a bit nervous about beachwear but there are many tricks to looking good - you have to ruthlessly try on a lot of things and really find what suits you.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

My grandmother said to always sleep with the window open. I go demented in hotels with sealed windows and always wake up looking peaky.
