SYNERGY Creating a whole that is greater than the pieces alone

by Anne Richardson

Like a puzzle, each SYNERGY HomeCare Team member is a unique piece, fitting together to make one workable whole—something greater than the individual pieces.

The result is an amazing company that values its clients, and humanity in general, in many ways. That’s what SYNERGY HomeCare is doing every hour of every day. Creating SYNERGY Through Connecting As a Team

President & CEO, Weama Kassem

Hourly to 24-hour care, wherever home may be.

Connecting caregivers and management makes SYNERGY HomeCare’s staff a family. Every company strives for a teamlike approach, but how many have a CEO who cooks a special lunch each week for the whole staff? Or hosts Saturday in-service lunches once a month for caregivers? President & CEO, Weama Kassem, has a true servant’s heart. In her desire to succeed in business and in her passion to serve others, she has created something special.

Years & Going Strong!

THIS EDITOR IS OKLAHOMA BORN AND BRED and proud to be a “Baby Boomer.” My parents are a part of the “Greatest Generation”… WE ARE 50-Plus-ers!!! That means for the last 23 years as the publisher for the Original and Longest running magazine for the 50-Plus, I have learned a thing or two about the resources our lovely state has for this group. I have directed, counseled, educated, informed, fought for, and guided the readers of the OSJ magazine all these years. They reach out to me on a daily basis, and I'm happy to share my knowledge and connections—it is WHY I do this! In the last few years, I have joined forces with Eunice Khoury, the host of “Well Preserved with Eunice Khoury," the longest running Radio Show for the 50-Plus (read more about that on page 64.) Having sponsored, produced and attended hundreds of events, Eunice and I have become “The Voice and Print for the 50-Plus!” ON THE COVER: Our featured cover story is SYNGERY HomeCare. Please read to discover what this VITAL company brings to our city. Learn about its owner, Weama Kassem, who has a “servant’s heart” beginning on page 6. And finally, don't miss the Pet Section (page 50a) which is celebrating its 4th year (that’s 28 in dog years!!) Be Well! (405) 816-7889 Facebook.com/OklahomaSeniorJournal

Call Today To Learn More Or To Schedule A Tour.

At Heritage Point we’re imagining a better way to live with Alzheimer’s. Rather than focusing on what our residents have forgotten, we focus on what they remember...like dancing, gardening, fishing, sewing…the things that bring them joy and make them smile. We are reinventing Alzheimer’s care and what life should be like. Our focus is on knowing our residents…who they are and what they love to do…and then finding activities that have meaning and purpose. We offer a smaller, home environment that promotes dignity, respect and love. Our experienced and caring staff become family. Call today to learn more about our unique approach to caring for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Pulling the

pieces TOGETHER by Anne Richardson

President & CEO with a Servant’s Heart For Weama Kassem, “caring for people and providing hospitality are my natural passions. And part of my culture is to care for seniors.” Upon graduation from Oklahoma City University, Weama was terribly saddened to see such a need for compassionate senior care. This drove her to find a way that she could make a difference. Combining her loves of caring for others and hospitality, Weama began seeking a source through which she would be able to provide senior care on a wide scale. As a result of her research on senior care franchises, her heart connected with the mission and values of SYNERGY HomeCare. Weama has gained a positive reputation and is one of the go-to companies when assistance is needed as people age in place. Her relationships with referral sources has created an effective and creative collaboration. SYNERGY has become a top non-medical provider of choice in the continuum of care for several Home Health “You can give or get help if we touch one another, person to person, heart to heart. ” —Weama, President & CEO of SYNERGY HomeCare in Edmond 10

and Hospice companies throughout the metro. SYNERGY HomeCare has experienced impressive growth since 2013 in the northern metro area and the SYNERGY brand has begun to take root. Although the metro area is geographically widespread, the small town culture naturally evolved into relationships extending southward down the I-35 corridor allowing SYNERGY to begin penetrating the Moore/Norman market. In order to provide brand continuity, the next logical step was to acquire the centerpiece, which is the Oklahoma City territory. Weama believes in the law of attraction and has drawn a team to her that has similar values. Together, they have created their own synergy and taken the mission to the next level of meeting people in the context of their crisis. Weama sets the example for 24-hour availability for her staff as she leads the way in going the

extra mile for her clients. This might even mean picking up a caregiver with car trouble just so that the client with Alzheimer’s has the smiling face that he is familiar with and with whom he has a comforting relationship. It could also mean providing a meal for a client. Through Weama’s leadership, her SYNERGY team puts an extraordinary amount of emphasis on the C.A.R.E. concept and provides extended caregiver education on client engagement.

SYNERGY HomeCare is the only nonmedical home care company with the proprietary C.A.R.E. Team approach.

C.A.R.E. stands for Coordinated And Responsive Engagement It’s not just about providing home care, but about finding solutions. SYNERGY

goes above and beyond providing basic homemaking, personal care and companion services by: • Coordinating with family members and providers as we observe, note and interact with our clients making the information available to them. • Responding by incorporating this information into the caring services we provide to our clients each day. • Engaging family members, medical providers and clients in order to improve the quality of life for the families we serve, providing positive outcomes for all involved.

Caring for a senior is a team effort. SYNERGY’s participation in the continuum of care means you can depend on us to protect your well-being. The first step to coordinating care is to sit down with you and create a customized care plan that includes a centralized list of all care provided. We adjust care plans as needs of the client and/or family changes. We take client satisfaction so seriously that we engage an independent surveyor to conduct monthly satisfaction surveys.

Wondering about the different types of care and costs? Senior Care Referral Services of Oklahoma can help! Rick & Denise Guttenberger established Senior Care Referral Services to help families navigate the often complex network of senior care options available in the greater Oklahoma City area. At no cost to families, the Guttenbergers help those considering independent living, assisted living, memory care, long term care or home health care find the best solution for their specific situation. Senior Care Referral Services of Oklahoma helps families answer these questions: • Where do I even begin? • What is the difference between independent living, assisted living, memory care and long term care? • How much does all of this cost? • Is there financial help for veterans and their spouses? • My loved one experiences some confusion; do they need memory care? • What are the best communities for my needs and situation? Serving families from Guthrie to Norman, Mustang/Yukon to Shawnee, Senior Care Referral Services works directly with families to provide the best answers to senior care needs - all at no cost! Our staff has visited and toured every community that we recommend in the greater Oklahoma City area. “We have taken the tours, talked to the directors, met with the marketing teams and looked at the reviews. We feel confident that any place we take a family is a place we would take our own,” says Rick Guttenberger. Helping seniors and their families find care solutions at no cost is what we do for clients. No matter how tough the request or situation, Rick and Denise will do whatever they can to help. “It is a privilege to work with families and help them find peace of mind by simplifying their search for answers,” says Denise.

What is

personalized Memory Care? by David Krukiel

Built on Experience The founders of Iris Memory Care themselves have struggled with the emotions of placing loved ones in memory care. After realizing that many communities are institutional and lacking in quality, they set out to create a homelike memory care model based on Compassion, Dignity, and Comfort. Iris is excited to introduce this leadingedge approach to Oklahoma with expertly designed communities, exemplary activities, and specially trained staff to address the unique needs of their residents.

Dignity by Design Walking into Iris is like walking into a beautiful single-family home. With an elegant great room adjoining an open-concept kitchen and dining area, residents have the opportunity to interact with cooks as meals are prepared, share stories at the dinner table, or relax in a spacious setting. The kitchen is traditionally known as the heart of the home, and at Iris Memory Care it serves as the heart of their community!

Comfort and Security

Compassionate Care Compassion is the guiding principle that helps Iris enrich their residents’ quality of life. For those with memory loss, deeply ingrained reflections of yesteryear serve as reminders of the people, places and events that have shaped one’s life. Iris works with families to collect extensive resident profiles, allowing them to recognize and relate to past events your loved one may visit throughout the day. Wherever the journey of the mind may lead, Iris will be there to join and support them.

Grand Opening Specials!

At Iris, comfort and security are paramount. Highend granite counters and tiled bathrooms provide beauty and durability — while hypoallergenic hardwood-like floors offer ease of mobility. Even the paint colors are selected for their soothing influence. In addition to the many comforts Iris residents enjoy, their communities are specially equipped for 24/7 access to loved ones while maintaining a safe and secure environment.

Call Iris Memory Care today to schedule a visit and meet the caregivers who are committed to helping your loved one live well in every moment!

Getting Cavities,

Y

AGAIN??

by Mary E. Martin, DDS

ears ago a TV commercial talked about the “cavity prone years,” leading us to believe that tooth decay was the disease of children and teens. What a surprise it is for many to find that older adults can also have a serious decay problem and one which is harder to diagnose and treat. These cavities are called “root caries,” and develop at or below the gumline. Prevention of root decay involves several steps. Obviously, you need to see your dentist regularly for an examination and thorough cleaning, along with topical fluoride treatments. But there are also certain foods and many hidden sugars that you can avoid in your diet to keep your teeth stronger. Empty calorie foods such as candy, snacks and desserts should be avoided, not just because of the sugar, but also because they stick to the teeth. Bacteria in your mouth feed off these sugars and release acids which leads to tooth decay.

acids that are produced continue to harm teeth long after you stop eating them. It is better to eat a piece of fresh fruit.

Sugar-containing drinks (soda, lemonade, juice and sweetened coffee or tea) are particularly harmful because sipping them causes a constant sugar bath. Even nutritious foods which are acidic, like tomatoes and citrus fruits can have harmful effects on tooth enamel, so they should be eaten as part of a meal, not by themselves. Dried fruits are good choices for a healthy diet, but since they are sticky and adhere to teeth, the plaque

Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a good choice for a healthy smile since they are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth. These foods also stimulate saliva production, which help wash away food particles and harmful acid. And lastly, water – particularly fluoridated water – is the most tooth friendly beverage. Go for a minimum of 64 ounces daily (eight glasses). You will see and feel a difference!

What is an Investment Advisor

and why do you need one? Financial planning is wise, and can make your money work for you and your future.

How do Investment Advisors get paid?

by Doug Claycomb

Before you hire ANY financial professional, find out the fees involved and how they get paid. (If they say there are no fees, they aren’t telling the whole story!) Investment Advisors are usually paid by one or some combination of:

An Investment Advisor is in the business of giving advice on investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or exchangetraded funds. Some also manage the relationship that these investments have to each other and how they change over time. Ask the right questions before doing business with any investment advisor or financial planner: • Ask what experience they have with people who have similar circumstances to yours. • Ask about their credentials, degrees or work history. • Check what licenses they hold. You can learn about financial designations at www.FINRA.org. • Ask if they only recommend a limited number of products and, if so, why?

• a percentage of the value of your managed assets • an hourly fee • a fixed fee • a commission on the securities they sell (if they are also a broker-dealer)

Plan Group is an investment management company that offers the best funds that are available for YOU, not just what they are ‘allowed’ to offer or are encouraged to sell. What we mean by ‘best’ is that the research is unbiased and nonconflicting. We always offer a wide range of investments and strive to find the best product for each client based on their particular needs, suitability and goals.

Ask your advisor to explain their approach. Plan Group is a fully transparent company—there are never undisclosed fees inside your investments. All applicable fees are in our firm’s brochure. Please request a copy!

Plan Group was built on high ethics and integrity, client relationships, sound advice and quality service to individuals who need and value our role in the management of their financial assets. We evaluate your total financial situation to incorporate your specific goals. We believe your Tax, Investment, Retirement, Insurance, Estate, and Legal Planning needs are all related. Above all, we work with you to make your money work for you. Call us for a no-obligation consultation today!

Patrick Munnerlyn knows... It’s never too early to

start being Well Preserved

by Anne Richardson

Well Preserved Advisory Group’s motto is “Preserving your health, wealth and freedom to live life the way you choose.” This is the principle that Patrick Munnerlyn, Investment Advisor at Well Preserved, practices daily in his work and personal life. Planning ahead Patrick began his career in insurance by focusing on Medicare enrollment for clients. After continued education and experience in insurance services, he then acquired his securities license which allows him to offer even more options for retirement planning. Patrick enjoys helping his clients find security in their future. The typical client for Patrick probably has a conservative risk tolerance and isn’t interested in “playing the stock market.” Patrick focuses on assisting clients specifically with retirement, long-term care and Medicare options. These might include annuities, mutual funds or other advisory models suited for the specific client.

How can you guarantee retirement? Patrick’s focus is helping clients determine, “how can I live off money that’s gained from the money I already have?” He starts by working with a client to create an income plan and then can offer retirement planning choices to guide their assets in growth, based on what assets they have after a budget is set. Preserving health Whether it’s physical fitness or financial fitness, staying in good shape isn’t something you want to ‘catch up’ on. Patrick Munnerlyn is practicing what he preaches to his clients and his kids, and hoping to create a brighter future for each one. Patrick has devoted much of his personal life to his family and his love of the martial art, Jiu Jitsu. Patrick has taken medals and won several competitions. He has five children with his wife, Laura, two of whom are hooked on Jiu Jitsu as well.

If you are interested in creating or changing your retirement strategy, call Patrick with questions and to schedule a complimentary consultation.

success to working alongside his mother, Eunice Khoury, founder of the advisory group (see page 64.) Patrick calls Eunice “his best example of how hard work pays off.” Seeing Eunice’s passion for helping people has been key in shaping Patrick’s own goals. “I can’t fill those shoes,” Patrick says, “but following the road behind such a trailblazer of my mom is my path.”

A choice to Serve Seniors...

MY way When faced with serious philosophical differences with the changing leadership of the senior care company I worked for 10 years ago, my options were limited: learn to be quiet, or resign and go back into mental health, a field I had left due to burn-out several years earlier. As I was updating my resume, a nagging little voice questioned, “What about the Seniors who can’t afford higher charges.... and what about the Seniors who need a little more attention.... and what about....?” The words of a client, one of the most gentle and loving men I have ever known, came to my mind, “You really ought to get into business yourself, you could do it better.” The day after I resigned, I registered my own senior care business, prayed a lot and gambled away my peace of mind. Finally, I was free to do things my way. In my opinion, Seniors need to be spoiled, loved and cared for, not just have someone with them to help, but the right someone that also cares for their furry family members when applicable. Seniors don’t need babysitters but companions who will understand them, help when needed but not take over, and add to their quality of life. There should not be a parade of caregivers each week. Seniors don’t like constant

change, and in cases of some forms of dementia, too much change can contribute to decline. Caregivers ought to be matched by personality and the work done. The families and friends of our clients ought to be supported as well, and free to enjoy the time with the relative they are caring for. Women Suddenly ALONE

By Carol L. Hager, ChFC®, CLU®, CDFA™ Let me introduce myself by sharing my personal story. I am Carol Hager and I recently returned home from a wonderful family vacation in Costa Rica. Every evening we sat down to dinner together (all 17 of us) at one large table. I have to say these evening meals were the best part of the vacation. The idea that all of us actually sat down, broke bread together, and had conversations was great. My heart was truly full of joy. But when I came home, I was deeply depressed. I was very lonely on this vacation because my beloved husband Larry was not with us. We lost him August 27, 2013, and I can honestly say I did not know living without him would be so hard. I share this story because I am concerned about women who suddenly find themselves alone. Women suddenly alone have so many issues they have to handle and at a time when emotions run high. Yet, sound financial decisions need to be made. As a Financial Consultant, I believe I can help. With AXA Advisors, I offer services and products to address a broad range of needs and circumstances that women suddenly face alone:  Financial planning services  Life insurance  Investment accounts  Retirement income  Long term care insurance  Estate planning Let’s talk about one I believe women will experience: Long Term Care.

Women can face long term care twice in their lives – they take care of their husbands and often outlive them, then women need their own long term care. Medicare provides limited coverage for nursing home and home care services; it is designed to pay for the treatment of acute, short-term illness – not ongoing care associated with activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, and dressing. Medicaid, a different program entirely, may cover ongoing costs associated with long-term care, but requires that recipients meet strict asset and income eligibility criteria and that care can be restricted to Medicaid-approved facilities. The question that you may be asking yourself is, “Am I financially prepared for the ongoing expense associated with this care if I need it?” Long-term care insurance may be very good for you and your family. As a Financial Consultant and a woman who has been thrown into this kind of situation, I believe I can help. Should we talk? Tell me your story. Call for a confidential and no-obligation consultation.

Keeping seniors

in their home LONGER

W

by Diana Hendrix

olfgang Von Nurenburg, a beautiful black and silver German shepherd, came to live at

our house just a few short months ago. Wolfie is what his owner, John Wallace, and our family call him. He’s almost three years old and as gentle as can be.

Owner Diana Hendrix with client, John

I have peace of mind knowing that Daddy is receiving outstanding care while I continue to work…I wouldn’t be able to do my job without the confidence I have in the care he receives from you! —Ruthie Riggs of OKC

Wolfie came to live with us for one reason, so that when John moved into Bradford Village he could continue to interact with his beloved furry companion. The trial period would be for 30 days, but all it took was one weekend. All our family gathered together to meet Wolfie and to see if he would be a great fit. The test was the grandkids. The favorite part of the weekend was throwing Wolfie the ball, and the grandkids did that over and over and over. Even our 9-month-old grandson didn’t seem to have a problem with our new 95-pound addition. Wolfie was a keeper. John has been to our house every week to see Wolfie and throw the ball to him until he got too sick to travel. He couldn’t see Wolfie weekly, but he asked about him every day.

I came up with the idea of putting together a video of all the pictures I had taken of John’s visits. I put the video on a digital frame that John could see anytime he wanted. As our family grows to love Wolfie, pictures I take will be added.

Wolfie

John may not be able to see Wolfie every day, but he'll never really be without him.

Helping seniors find solutions to everyday challenges.

SERVICE PLUS SAFETY: PRIORITIES OF

TRUE TECH Home Services

by Susan L. Slater

Wouldn’t you love to have one reliable, trustworthy company you could call for ALL your heating & air conditioning, plumbing, handyman services and electrical needs? Well, look no further than this locally-owned Oklahoma City company, True Tech Home Services. Based in Oklahoma City, they provide dependable service in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Norman, Midwest City, or anywhere within Oklahoma County. When you call True Tech, you won’t be thrown into an automated phone system. A real person will answer your call and help you get the quickest service possible. In fact, if you call by 10:00 am, they can usually provide service that day. And to make it an even quicker process, their trucks are stocked with over 3500 parts so that they can almost always solve your problem on their FIRST trip. Aaron Boyles, President of True Tech Home Services says, “It’s our mission to be the best Electrical, Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing service contractor as measured by our customer’s satisfaction, as well as our employee’s satisfaction. It is my belief that we have the best staff in the industry.” Your Safety is True Tech’s Priority

It’s not just quality repair work that True Tech is striving to 30

deliver. They also make your family’s safety a top priority. You’ve heard terrible news stories about victims who’ve been assaulted or murdered from repairmen who had been sent to their homes. In fact, several people are working right now to try to get laws passed which will require companies to do screenings and background checks of all workers they send out. But this hasn’t been accomplished yet. True Tech isn’t waiting for laws to be made; they feel like it’s the right thing to do, so they’re doing it on their own. Every employee True Tech sends to your home is rigorously screened and has had a background check to ensure your safety. A lot of companies can’t promise this, but it’s important to Aaron. “I don’t hire anybody that I wouldn’t want in my own home, and you are guaranteed that anybody from True Tech that enters your home will be background checked and drug free.” Happy Customers

Go to True Tech’s website, www.truetechhomeservice. com, and you’ll find customer after customer giving happy, satisfied testimonials. And

when True Tech does come across the rare unsatisfied customer, they are determined to fix it. Their guarantee states, “If at any time during the first year of installation, you are not 100% satisfied with the performance of the equipment, our service, or even our people, we will, within 30 days of your request, remove the system and cheerfully refund the entire amount of the contract.” If you compare this guarantee with the limitations, fine print, and exclusions you’ll find on most other service contracts, you’ll see why True Tech is considered an excellent company who stands behind their work. Peace of Mind

Using True Tech will give you one more thing—peace of mind knowing that they comply with all codes, licenses, and laws. Customers need to beware of many companies out there who don’t follow this important safeguard. If a worker is injured working at your home and the contractor is not insured, you can be held liable. Or well after repair work is done, if there is an insurance claim due to a fire or an accident that is

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

PLUMBING

related to unlicensed work, your insurance company can dispute the claim. You also want to avoid questions related to workmanship when you sell your home -- if you used the wrong company, this could end up costing you more than the original repair. Good Community Partner

In addition to being a good service provider, True Tech strives to be a good community partner as well. They participate in several charitable endeavors including Susan G. Komen, the Tim Tebow Foundation, and Angels Foster Family Network of OKC. Maybe you’ve even seen them trying to add a little cheer to Monday morning commuters on what they like to call Wave Day. It’s the True Tech crew who stands at the corner of 63rd and May on occasional Monday mornings greeting motorists with a smile and a wave as they pass by. Aaron explains, “It is all in fun and an attempt

ELECTRICAL

to put a smile on the faces of the back-to-work crowd. We all get a lot of smiles, waves, and horn honking from people heading to work.”

HANDYMAN SERVICE

Here are just a FEW of the services that True Tech provides: Electric:

Aaron is proud of his company and the service it provides to fellow Oklahomans. ”Being born and raised in Oklahoma, I have a personal commitment to this community and to the people that have made this area such a great place to live.”

As a professional contractor, accuracy is important to their business, so it’s only natural that they want to be just as accurate in their pricing. Providing RESPITE CARE for family caregivers SYNERGY HomeCare believes that part of their mission is to meet families in the context of their crisis. Our nation identified a new crisis and the Sandwich Generation was born. That means a growing number of families are taking care of an aging loved one. Caring for an aging parent is a labor of love, but it is still labor. Many family caregivers sacrifice personal time or become stretched thin between the needs of aging parents, the needs of their children and/or grandchildren or just as importantly, their own needs. Family caregivers experience burnout and failing health in large proportions. Providing RESPITE CARE means families are able to rely on a SYNERGY caregiver to take the lead for a few hours or a few days. It is an excellent solution that allows family caregivers some much needed time for themselves without worry, and it allows the one needing care to remain in their own environment. How SYNERGY Brings It All Together SYNERGY excels at finding what pieces are needed to perfectly fit the life of seniors, creating a better life for aging loved ones and their families. Learning about the client and matching compatible caregivers is essential. Does the client have a pet? Do they have allergies? Do they smoke? Do they have a hobby? What was their former profession? Do they need just a few hours or do they need someone to stay overnight? Many factors are used in determining the best care plan and caregiver for each client. SYNERGY HomeCare approaches each new client like family and each situation as unique.

You Deserve to Know the Truth. Let Heartland Dispel the Myths about hospice and home health care.

Myth: “I was so scared to even say ‘hospice.’ I thought it meant I had to give up. Give up hope. Give up trying. Give up praying for a cure.”

Truth: In order to receive hospice, the patient must be eligible and have an

understanding that hospice focuses on comfort care (palliative), not cure. But patients and families do not have to be “ready to die” before getting the care they need and deserve. Hospice helps patients and families deal with what is happening to them on their own terms and in their own time frame. It is important to get hospice early so that the benefit can help patients prepare and get ready for what is happening; it is not required that patients be ready prior to receiving care.

Myth: My husband had surgery and needs to go to several follow-up doctor

appointments. I thought in order to qualify for home health care, he wouldn’t be able to leave home.

Truth: Patients are allowed to leave home for medical reasons. However, in order to

qualify for home care, leaving home should require a considerable or taxing effort and require the assistance of others or a supportive device like a cane, walker or wheelchair. Congratulations Heartland Home Health serving Shawnee and Surrounding Areas for being voted “Best of Shawnee Award for 2016” in the Health Services Category by the Shawnee Award Program. Valir HosPets Program Pet Therapy

HosPets is Valir Hospice’s pet therapy program. This paw-warming program began in 2005 and continues to grow in popularity. Since its inception, Valir Hospice patients have received thousands of visits and tail wags from HosPets volunteers and their guardians, including trained therapy dogs and miniature horses. Well-behaved animals, of many breeds and sizes that lend a calming presence are welcome to participate in HosPets. However, each dog must first successfully pass the Canine Good Citizen examination and the Therapy Dog International (TDI) test, which includes skills needed to interact with hospice patients such as maneuvering around walkers, staying at the bedside, and not jumping up.

Patients often benefit from pet therapy because they: • Experience a sense of comfort, warmth, and normalcy • Relax and release feelings of anxiety and depression • Focus on something other than their illness • Respond to a living touch • Feel motivated to complete tasks • Perhaps most important of all, look forward to the next HosPets visit!

To volunteer or schedule a time with HosPets, call us today!

Why not stay in your with your fur baby instead of by Vic Vickers

MOVING

because of aging?

Us older folks (including my 78 year old self) don’t like change... would you agree with me on that? I love my home and I’ve been living in it for over 24 years. It would take a pry bar to get me out of it. However, I’ve remodeled it several times (wife’s idea) to keep it updated and more accommodating to our needs. As we grow older, our needs change. Also due to circumstances, we may find ourselves in the need of: A wider door to the bathroom (older homes are only 24” wide and it’s impossible to get a wheelchair through it.) You even pretty much have to turn a walker sideways. Folks, if you cannot get yourself into the bathroom, you’ve got a BIG problem. Once in the bathroom, you may not be able to step up and into the bathtub. Wouldn’t a roll-in shower (See photo) with a bench seat be great AND MUCH SAFER! How about a shower wand (hand held) that adjusts up and down on a bar? Also, we’re going to need some grab bars strategically placed in the home as well. Lever door handles are also great as our hands become more arthritic and it’s difficult to twist a knob. Is a ramp necessary to get your into the house? We do those as well. Ramps don’t have to be out in front of your house for all to see as we can bring them into the back, the garage, etc.

Shower remodels for easier, safer transitions in and out are a popular service of Handymen R Us.

Also, as we age, we require about 60% more lighting. We’re installing a lot of ceiling can lights with LED inserts that not only help you see better but are more economical as well. What good does it do you to stay in your home if you can’t afford the utilities? Well folks, Handymen R’ Us is your go-to company to get these things done. Handymen R’ Us is a seven-time Angie’s List Super Service Award Winner! I’m founder, President and a graduate of the National and Oklahoma Home Builders CAPS (Certified Aging In Place Specialist) training as well as the Universal Design and Build Program. I’m also President-Elect of the Oklahoma State Remodelers Council and keep up my continuing education hours whenever possible. Handymen R’ Us is insured and bonded for your protection. We’ve served over 2,000 customers during our 24 years in business—many of those we serve time and time again. We do quite a few whole-house makeovers. We literally can re-do everything from the ceiling to walls, flooring, appliances, counter tops, bathroom and kitchen remodels, etc. Whether you are putting your house on the market or just remodeling, we can do it all! 58

“My husband had total hip replacem ent and the hospital would not release him surgery had a ramp or hand rails at our hom until we e. Our only son is out of state serving active duty with the US Air Force and I had no idea who to call or what to do. I said a short prayer before I calle d R Us and knew I would find an answ Handymen er. I called... and spoke with Vic Vickers. He was compassionate and gave me clear options of wha t could be done. Within 30 minutes, Jacob was at my home taking measurements and I had a firm quote within 45 minutes of my phone call. The ramp was completed when I came home with my husband the next day! Handymen R Us did what they said they would do, in the time limit we had agreed on and at the price they had quoted me. A is only as good as their word. Pam’s prayer was great for us too!

Robin Gunn and Eunice Khoury attend over 100+ events locally each year!!! Below are some recent events they have been a part of...LIVE remote at Grand Tapestry at Quail Springs; CareTrak test run with Scott Hines and OKCPD at Martin Nature Park; Senior Day at the Capitol with Eunice as Emcee and Robin distributing 500 magazines; Volunteering at Edmond Mobile Meals; “Tag the Tahoe” weekly Giveaway; orchestrated Sandwich Generation Conference... Just a FEW of the many things they do in the community!

CONNECTING WITH

Robin serves by publishing the The VOICE and the PRINT OSJ magazine. Eunice produces for the 50-PLUS a LIVE radio show, “Well Preserved.” Together these by Anne Richardson ladies are IN THE TRENCHES of our community and doing much, much more than you can imagine! Why Do They Do This? The Oklahoma Senior Journal (OSJ) started in 1993 by Robin Gunn, and the radio show “Well Preserved with Eunice Khoury” went live in 2002. Both started out of a personal need for information and passion to share with others... so that nobody else would have to struggle the way each of these women have. They felt the need and saw it with their friends and family as well. Passion, Purpose and Perseverance describe these ladies to a “T”! What other publisher and radio show host do this? NOBODY! These ladies have joined forces to become even more effective to help our aging community. They invest countless hours and attend more than 100 events locally each year to distribute the resourceful OSJ and speak to the community in person. Robin and Eunice not only attend events but volunteer often, coordinate, serve on non-profit boards, produce events serving the community and actively advocate for 50-Plus issues. Senior Day at the Capitol 2016, for example, was one for which Eunice was asked to again Emcee and Robin distributed over 500 magazines to attendees and politicians. They Do This, Too? Both women have become experts and respected sources for the 50-Plus. Each fields countless phone calls, emails, and letters from folks looking for guidance. Eunice calls it “Paychecks from the Heart” when she and Robin stop, take time to listen and answer the questions that come their way. “Aging is not for sissies or the uninformed,” says Robin. Stay informed! Please “like” the Oklahoma Senior Journal’s Facebook page for frequent updates on local events and offers. Also, be sure to listen to “Well Preserved with Eunice Khoury” on KTOK News Radio 1000 AM every Saturday morning LIVE at 7 a.m. You can also win 50 bucks! Each week Eunice gives away $50 in her “Tag the Tahoe” contest. See her website for details.
